Background

HELLSING is a series originally started as a manga created by Kouta Hirano.

It ran for 10 volumes, and had spawned multiple adaptations including that of an anime, and eventually after the anime became a hit in the west; the producers of the anime decided to halt any further adaptations before planning on an OVA series which promises to stick to the manga.

It originally started as a one-shot hentai by Kouta Hirano, and was included in 1996's magazine of Kairakuten. After signing a deal with Young King OURs, Hirano began experimenting; redoing Hellsing from the start yet again, but features many similarities of its original prototype, and after Volume 1 of the manga was finished; Hirano tested to see whether it was worth continuing or not. But after its success, Hirano decided to continue and talks about a Hellsing anime began. Eventually, it was greenlit and was produced by studio Gonzo, and ran for 13 episodes with the first episode airing on October 10th, 2001, and concluded on January 16, 2002.

An OVA series started in 2006, and 10 OVAs were released in the span of 6 years; from February 10, 2006, to December 26, 2012, many of which were made by multiple studios. Starting with Satelight Studio, which animated OVA I until dropping the show after OVA IV was finished, though the series was later picked up by Madhouse, which animated OVA V to OVA VII and then, yet again, was dropped; until it was picked up by Graphinica the next year, which finished the series.

A prequel manga, titled The Dawn, was started in 2001; and was abruptly left alone by Hirano, so that he could put his focus on Hellsing until it finished. However, instead of continuing The Dawn after Hellsing had finished, Hirano had announced that he would instead work on another series. The Dawn was adapted as an anime, and was included in the DVD box of OVA VIII, to OVA X; lasting 3 episodes only, and was produced by Graphinica.

In 2021, news outlet Deadline reported that Hellsing will be adapted into a Live-Action movie, written by Derek Kolstad, teaming up with Amazon Studios to work on the movie. Though the release date is unknown.

Hellsing is named after and centered around the Royal Order of Protestant Knights originally led by Abraham Van Helsing. The mission of Hellsing is to search for and destroy the undead and other supernatural forces of evil that threaten the Queen and the county. This organisation is currently led by Sir Integral Fairbrook Wingates Hellsing, who inherited the leadership of Hellsing as a child after the death of her father. She witnessed his death which turned her from a once innocent and shy little girl to a tough and deadly force. She is protected by the faithful Hellsing family butler Walter C. Dornez, a deadly foe in his own right, and Alucard, the original and most powerful vampire, who swore loyalty to the Hellsing family after being defeated by Van Helsing one hundred years before the story takes place. These formidable guardians are joined early on in the storyline by former police officer Seras Victoria, whom Alucard turned into a vampire.

As the scale and frequency of incidents involving the undead escalate in England and all around the world, Sir Integra discovers that the remnants of a Nazi group called Millennium still exist and are intent on reviving Nazi Germany by creating a battalion of vampires. Millennium, Hellsing, and the Vatican Section XIII, Iscariot clash in an apocalyptic three-sided war in London, and Millennium reveals its true objective: to destroy the vampire lord Alucard, ending a feud begun during World War II.

Explanations

  • Vampire: A Vampire is a powerful creature created from a human virgin drained of blood by a vampire of the opposite sex, only for said vampire to offer their own blood in return. This resurrects the corpse as a newborn among the undead and perpetuates a lineage. The first ever vampire to exist was Alucard.

Within the Hellsing universe, there are two distinct types of vampires introduced: the aforementioned "true" vampires, and artificial ones created either through the FREAK chip or the Millennium Organization's experiments, both rooted in harvesting raw essence from true vampires. They are also known as a "No-Life King", "Nosferatu", and a "Demon". These names however are commonly associated with true vampires rather than artificial vampires, in which they are known simply as "Freaks". The term "true vampire" is used in the Hellsing series to define a formerly human being who has sucked blood of their own free will. The only vampire bloodline confirmed as true vampires in the Hellsing series is that of Alucard and his offspring.

  • Vampire Hunters: They were a group of strong, capable men brought together by Abraham Van Helsing to defeat Dracula from fully turning Mina Harker into a vampire, and to be his eternally. In order to defeat Dracula, they seem to use such trickery to defeat him, as Abraham said that he had defeated all his servants, and that there's no such way for them to defeat Dracula and his army without the use of magics, as Abraham is a genius. They had also known about the Counts weakness to sunlight, in which a direct sunlight disables the Count's wide variety of abilities, and they had taken advantage of this; the climax of the novel revolves around the iconic "Racing for the sunset" scene, in which, they abruptly attacked Dracula's cartridge, which was aiming at his castle at approximately 5PM. The weapons in which the group uses varies between one and another. Some uses one while others may use two or so. Quincey Morris notably keeps around a bowie knife during his travels, and at the flashback of Volume 10, a revolver was shown beside his body. John Seward was seen wielding a Winchester Repeating Rifle, although the next scene he appears in shows that he's wielding a Double-Barrel Shotgun instead. Abraham Van Helsing used a traditional Wooden Stake and Axe; this remains consistent throughout his flashback appearances. The weapon Arthur uses remains unknown, as he appeared only in one flashback. However, due to the wealth he has, the group was able to pay the expenses in order to defeat the Count.
  • Hellsing Organisation: Her Royal English Legions of Legitimate Supernatural and Immortal Night Guard, the Hellsing Organisation, more formally known as the Royal Order of Protestant Knights, is a fictional Organisation from the manga series Hellsing by Kouta Hirano. It's created for the sole purpose of keeping the country save from Supernatural threats, and Its headquarters are at the Hellsing Manor located on the outskirts of London and mainly operates within the UK. Founded by Abraham Van Helsing after Dracula's defeat, the Hellsing Organisation specializes in supernatural threats like Zombies, Ghouls and Vampires. The actual Hellsing lineage ends with Integra; at the end of the series she is past child bearing age and hasn't adopted.
