Background

River Butterfly (né Johansen) is the former king of the Kingdom of Mewni, ruling alongside his wife Moon Butterfly, and Star Butterfly's father. Born into the Johansen clan of barbarians, River was crowned King of Mewni through his marriage to Queen Moon Butterfly.

After Eclipsa assumes the throne of Mewni, River now helps his wife in maintaining a society of Mewman refugees.

Standard Equipment: 

• Spear: Weapon River uses in combat to fight large monsters.

• Staff: River wields a staff with a crescent moon-shaped crystal ornament at the tip that is capable of firing off lightning blasts.

• Dimensional Scissors: Dimensional scissors are used for traveling between dimensions. By cutting anywhere in the air with the desired dimension to travel to in mind, the scissors create a portal. The portal itself usually reflects the designated dimension, like the portal to the Amethyst Arcade being pixelated and the portal to the Scum Bucket looking like blue waves. After someone passes through the portal, the portal either closes by itself or it can manually be closed by someone. The scissors can also be used as weapons, as demonstrated by Hekapoo. As revealed in "Deep Dive" and "Ludo, Where Art Thou?", if a scissors user does not have a specific destination in mind when using them, the portal that they open leads to a dead end.

Intelligence: Below Average regularly, Genius combat and survival wise (River possesses above-average physical prowess. He is able to fight monsters and wield a spear in "Diaz Family Vacation", wield a club in "Royal Pain", and survive for extended periods of time in the wilderness and run ten miles in five minutes in "Camping Trip". In terms of survival he taught Star what she knew along with the guards. He has also taught Star about her rash actions in "The Bogbeast of Boggabah")

Standard Tactics: River bases his instincts on survival instincts, making sure to camoflague himself, hide in his surroundings and strike or have a full calvary attack with animals he's tamed firing his lightning staff.
