Denji
Denji is the titular protagonist of the Chainsaw Man manga and anime series. He is the main protagonist of the Public Safety Saga and the deuteragonist of the Academy Saga.
As a young boy, he inherits his father's debts from the Yakuza. After meeting Pochita, he becomes a Devil Hunter for the Yakuza in an attempt to clear his debt. Once the Yakuza, under the control of a Devil, betrays him, he dies and Pochita becomes his heart. He is then revived and can become the Chainsaw Man by pulling a cord on his chest. After meeting Makima, he became a Public Safety Devil Hunter as a member of Tokyo Special Division 4.
Background
Following Makima's death by his own hands, he resigned from his position as a Devil Hunter but continues to fight as Chainsaw Man under the public eye, all the while being enrolled in Fourth East High School as a student. He is also the caretaker and adoptive brother of Makima's reincarnation, Nayuta.

Intro arc
Afterward, he meets Makima, who forces him to join the Public Safety Devil Hunters and threatens to exterminate him as a Devil if he ever refuses her orders. After killing the Muscle Devil, Denji becomes a sanctioned Devil Hunter and begins working with Aki Hayakawa and the fiend Power. Bat Devil arc
As Denji's joy of the experience slowly turns to melancholy, Makima tells him that if he can manage to kill the Gun Devil, she will grant any wish for him. To find the Gun Devil, the Public Safety Division has to collect pieces of the Gun Devil's flesh granted to other Devils. Eternity Devil arc
During the victory celebration, fellow Devil Hunter Himeno comes onto Denji before throwing up in his mouth during his first kiss and then offers to sleep with him. Denji refuses, wanting to save himself for Makima, and he and Himeno become friends afterward. Katana Man arc
The strongest Devil Hunter in the Public Safety organization, Kishibe, trains Denji and Power in preparation for an attack on the yakuza group that attacked the Public Safety Devil Hunters. Denji has his rematch with Katana Man and wins. Joined by Aki, Denji holds a nut-kicking tournament to see who can get Katana Man to scream the loudest as payback for Himeno. Bomb Girl arc
Denji and Beam are assisted by Aki, Angel, and the Second Division for a short time but are ultimately forced out by Reze's attacks. The Typhoon Devil joins the fray, and after a lengthy battle, Denji defeats Reze, using his chains to restrain her. Thinking she will not be able to use her powers underwater, he throws themselves into the ocean. Later, the two wake up on the beach, rescued by a now-unconscious Beam. After a short conversation, Denji asks Reze to run away with him and if her feelings for him were genuine. She rejects him and turns down his offer to run away. Denji lets her leave but tells her that he will wait for her at the café. With a backpack and an envelop of money, Denji waits at the café with a bouquet for Reze, but she never comes. International Assassins arc
Gun Devil arc
Control Devil arc
Denji meets with Kishibe, who puts Nayuta, the reincarnated Control Devil, under his care. Later, Denji has a dream with Pochita, who tells him to grant the Control Devil's dream by forming an equal relationship with her as a family. Denji then leaves Public Safety and starts attending high school while continuing to be Chainsaw Man. Justice Devil arc
Still wishing to get a girlfriend, Denji makes several attempts to expose his identity, but to no avail, as Hirofumi Yoshida protects his identity under a secret mission. He later meets Asa, who rejects his claims of being Chainsaw Man. Denji later battles and beats Devil Yuko in a one-sided fight. Dating Denji arc
While trying to find a way out, Denji tells Asa more about himself, and the two bond as she devises an escape plan. After gathering over one million yen, Asa tells Denji to give her the money, promising to grant any request after they escape, and Denji agrees. Everyone is freed from the aquarium after Asa changes it to a spear and defeats the Devil. Denji walks Asa home and asks her on a second date, which she agrees to do. Suddenly, Yoru possesses Asa, puts her hand on Denji's head, and calls out: "Denji Spinal Cord Sword." Denji is confused and interprets this as a farewell, mimicking her before leaving. The next day, Denji meets up with Asa after school and tells her his date plan: watching a non-stop movie marathon at the theater. Asa complains about the price, and they agree to have the movie date at Denji's home. Denji reluctantly accepts under the condition that Asa follows the home's rules because, in the worst-case scenario, she could die if she breaks them. Denji takes Asa to his apartment, where he explains the home's rules to her. As they watch the movie together, Denji tells Asa not to make out with him in front of his roommate, which gets Asa flustered, and she says she has no desire to kiss him and actually hates him. After Asa pushes Denji away, Yoru takes over her body and kisses him. Nayuta comes home from walking the dogs and calls Yoru a thief, linking a chain from her finger through Yoru's skull and turning her into a dog. Denji tells Nayuta to turn "Asa" back immediately, but Nayuta asks Denji if he is sure he wants that, reminding him that every woman he meets tries to kill him and asks what makes her any different. After some thought, Denji states that it is a feeling. Nayuta agrees to turn back Asa but on two conditions: allow her to eat ice cream every day and not make friends with Asa anymore, wary of Asa's bad scent. Denji is conflicted but decides to put Nayuta first, and she alters Asa's memories to make her believe that Denji stood her up. Falling Devil arc
Denji locates the Falling Devil, and they begin to fight. The Falling Devil recognizes that he is Chainsaw Man and requests a ceasefire, explaining that her job is to drop Asa into Hell to feed its residents. Wanting to protect Asa, Denji sees even more of a reason to kill the Devil. The Falling Devil uses her ability to make Denji remember his loss of Aki and Power, floating him into the air. Denji cuts up his brain to resist the mental attack and drops down to continue fighting the Falling Devil. Craving corn dogs, Denji devours the Falling Devil, who regenerates with a blast, tearing Denji apart from the waist down. After the Devil leaves to search for Asa, an unknown individual approaches the defeated Denji and cuts their hand, using their blood to revitalize Chainsaw Man, saying that he is still needed to fight. The restored Denji follows after the Falling Devil, who has already captured Asa and made her fall. Still in his hybrid form, Denji quickly jumps over to Asa, grabbing her and holding on to a nearby railing. To his confusion, they continue to fall upward as Asa pours out her negative views on life. Denji realizes the Devil's ability and tells Asa to think happy thoughts, managing to stop themselves in midair. Denji tells Asa that he knows how she feels as he has experienced similar things. Asa asks how he is able to overcome all the bad things in life, and Denji states he has something to live for that keeps him going: to have sex, and Asa reacts with disgust. Asa and Denji proceed to argue about sex, and Asa tells him that no one would want to have sex with him. This puts Denji in despair, and the two fly up through a door to Hell. Denji finds himself and Asa on the Falling Devil's prepared dish and rushes back to the door, quickly regenerating himself when he gets attacked by an unknown Devil. Denji finds, however, the Falling Devil on the other side of the door, preventing him from leaving. Denji is then surprised when the Falling Devil is slashed up by a Chainsaw Man doppelganger, who tells him to avoid the devils seeking to devour Asa until sunrise. Denji stands frozen facing his doppelganger, until he and Asa are knocked through the door back to Earth by the unknown Devil's tendrils. Denji is injured but is brought back by Asa's blood as she asks him to save her. Denji quickly gets up and starts running from their Devil pursuer, but he starts getting tired. Asa points to a motorcycle they can steal, but Denji refuses as there is a woman on it. She then tells him to steal another one close by with a man on it, and Denji follows. However, Denji has no idea how to ride a motorcycle, and as the Devil's tendril comes close, Asa transforms the motorcycle into a "Super Chainsaw Motorcycle," which allows them to cut through the tendril as they ride off. |

- Pochita: Pochita is the Chainsaw Devil who embodies the fear of chainsaws. He was the original Chainsaw Man prior to becoming Denji's heart. He is the overarching titular protagonist of the series.
- Super Chainsaw Man Motorcycle: A motorcycle enhanced by Asa from the motorbike stolen from a man driving on the street. This motorcycle possesses a very large chainsaw which is positioned horizontally between the two wheels. Its other notable features are a vastly upgraded engine and a black livery.
Nothing notable.
Notable Techniques
- Superhuman Endurance: Due to his rough childhood, Denji has developed a high tolerance for pain and stress, being able to still function as a Devil Hunter for the Yakuza despite having multiple of his organs missing at the time.
- Chainsaw Contract: If Denji is about to die, Pochita will set a contract with Denji where in exchange for living a "normal life", Pochita will become Denji's heart and turn him into a Hybrid.
- Pochita: Pochita is the Chainsaw Devil who embodies the fear of chainsaws. He was the original Chainsaw Man prior to becoming Denji's heart. He is the overarching titular protagonist of the series.
- Devil Erasure: The Chainsaw Devil is infamously able to consume other Devils, causing the "name" they represent to vanish from public consciousness while also erasing their physical existence. Kishibe was unable to recall historical events or things such as the Holocaust, Nazis or nuclear weapons, meaning that the Chainsaw Devil at some point consumed their respective Devils[290]. The specifics of this ability are unclear; Makima was able to recall numerous erased names, and the War Devil wanted to make the Chainsaw Devil "puke" the Nuclear Weapons Devil up. The erasure process can be partial: after the War Devil was partially devoured, the concept of "war" has remained, but no more wars have broken out in the human world[291].
- Chainsaw Appendage: As an embodiment of fear of chainsaws, protruding from Pochita's head is a chainsaw shaped appendage that functions as an actual chainsaw[292]. This ability is activated when the cord in his tail is pulled. As a full Devil, besides his head, he has four arms with chainsaw appendages. He can also generate chainsaws from his legs.
- Chain Entanglement: Pochita is able to disconnect his chains from his chainsaws to wrap around his opponent's body. He uses this to pull them closer to him. He's able to capture multiple opponents with it. Beam claimed that the Chainsaw Devil could use his chains to hook around buildings to move around quickly in the past, but this has yet to be seen currently.
- Body Assimilation: Pochita can fuse with a human body, restoring it to full health in the process. It was done on Denji, turning him into a hybrid. It is later revealed by Makima that this fusion occurred as a result of the contract. In exchange for Denji living a "normal life", Pochita becomes the heart of Denji[293].
- Devil Transformation: Should Denji's contract with Pochita ever be broken, Pochita can possess Denji's body and return to his original form. Makima stated that he has killed her 26 times in this state. The form seems to be under the control of Pochita as it is shown that he remembers Denji's dreams and tries to fulfill the requirements of their contract by eating a hamburger and going on a date with a girl. After being defeated by Makima to save Kobeni and later being rescued by Power, Denji's contract was restored and Pochita reverted back to his heart form while Denji transformed back into his normal hybrid. Pochita still can transform into his Devil form if Denji removes the heart from his body, in this form Pochita has retain a calmer personality and has two arms similar to Denji`s hybrid form, however his arms are still covered with an armor.
- Fear Empowerment: All Devils are born with a "name" that ties them to a concept. Devils feed on the fear that humans and other creatures have towards that concept, gaining their strength from it. Because of this, a Devil's power is deeply related to how humans perceive the concept and the visual images that their "name" inspire. The more fear is associated with a "name", the more powerful the Devil who possesses it becomes[294]. An example offered by Makima is how a Car Devil would be stronger than a Coffee Devil, since cars conjures up the mental image of getting run over and dying, while coffee does not evoke any scary ideas; another example is the Chicken Devil, which is so weak that it was kept as a class pet for a high school and killed when a student fell onto it. The fear that humans have towards Devils in general is also a source of power that they can utilize, since it was stated that after the Gun Devil attack, Devils grew stronger due to people being more afraid of them. Devils can also feed on the fear that other Devils have towards them, with the Chainsaw Devil managing to become extremely strong by using Devils fear as his source of power.
- Blood Consumption: All Devils can consume blood of other creatures to heal their injuries, it is also implied that Devils can grow more powerful by consuming blood. While all Devils can consume blood to quickly regenerate, powerful Devils have shown to possess better regeneration[295][296]. Hybrids and other powerful Devils, such as the Gun Devil and Darkness Devil, have really potent healing factors. The flesh or blood of a Devil can be feed to other creatures, making them stronger and even giving them the ability of the Devil they’ve eaten, however this only works if the flesh/blood they ate came from a Devil that is still alive as Denji did not get more powerful or gained the Control Devil’s ability, despite consuming Makima’s entire body.
- Contract Creation: All Devils can make contracts with humans, allowing humans to borrow some of their power in exchange for a sacrifice[297]. However, Fiends are unable to perform contracts and Devils are unable to perform contracts between each other.
- Corpse Possession: All Devils can also possess human corpses. This in most cases ends up creating a Fiend, though in rare cases it can end up creating a Hybrid instead under certain circumstances. The personality of the Fiend may mirror that of the corpse if the brain is still intact, as evident by the Violence Fiend's polite and gentle attitude[298]. In these scenarios, the Devil may also retain some memories from the body they took over. In rare instances, Devils deliberately would like to retain the personality of the possessed corpse, effectively reviving them, and take over their personalities from time to time. The only known instance of this happening is with the War Devil, who took over Asa Mitaka's body while keeping her ego intact.
- Reincarnation: Another ability common among all Devils is reincarnation: when a Devil dies, they reincarnate in Hell; when they die in Hell, they reincarnate on Earth. This ability makes them practically immortal. However every time they reincarnate, their memories and personalities are reset, making them completely different individuals from their previous incarnation. However, if the concept to which the Devil belongs is forgotten by humanity, he is unable to reincarnate and ceases to exist.
- Flesh Power Boost: It is said that a Devil or human of any power can have their abilities boosted if they eat the flesh of a super powerful Devil no matter what their original power level was. The current only known examples are the numerous Devils who became more powerful by eating the Gun Devil’s flesh and Santa Claus becoming a very powerful abomination after consuming the flesh of the Darkness Devil.
- Hand to Hand Combat: Even without his transformation, Denji is a capable unarmed and armed fighter. Against the Leech Devil - which was many times his size and weight - he was able to easily block her blows, whilst delivering punches and headbutts with enough force to damage her[299]. His skills improved further after training with Kishibe, in which he learnt to rely more on strategy instead of blind-strength.
- Strategy: Despite never receiving a proper education, Denji is very perceptive when it comes to ascertaining his enemies' weaknesses and how to exploit them. Denji was trained under Kishibe, who he refers to as "master" later on in the story, who teaches him various strategies. This is shown in the fight against Katana Man where Denji deceives Katana Man by making him think that Denji can only manifest chainsaws in his arms. Denji also managed to incapacitate Reze by using her weakness against water and defeat Santa Claus by abusing her weakness towards fire and light. In the time between Parts 1 and 2 Denji has continued developing his skills, such as learning to use the chains to reattach his head and limbs after being dismembered and learning to resist mental attacks by damaging his own brain with his chainsaws as seen in the fight against the Falling Devil.
- Swimming: After meeting Reze, Denji learned how to swim. He managed to use this skill to his advantage during his fight against her.
- Superhuman Condition: Due to fusing with Pochita, Denji gained superhuman abilities even when not transformed. In his human form, Denji is durable enough to survive being hit by Power with a hammer and getting squeezed by the Bat Devil, despite both individuals possessing immense strength[300]. He is also very strong, capable of decapitating a Fiend with just one swing of his Axe[301]. Due to his fusion with Pochita his endurance has also considerable increased, his mental fortitude has allowed him to fight for three days straight while constantly being injured[302] and remaining conscious even after having multiple parts of his body cut or blown off.
- Hybrid Transformation: By pulling on the cord emerging from his chest, Denji can transform into a bloodthirsty Chainsaw Devil[303]. Denji needs blood in order to use his abilities, so if he does not have enough of it in his body, he can not fully transform and will instead enter a pseudo-hybrid form. While Denji still has access to some of his powers in this form, they are considerably weaker and his chainsaws are shorter. If Denji runs out of blood, while already being fully transformed, his chainsaws will automatically retract themselves[304]. While in this form Denji still doesn't posses Pochita's signature ability of Devil erasure which was proven in his fight against the Falling Devil which was eaten by him but neither weakened or erased.
- Chainsaw Manifestation: As part of his transformation Denji grows fully-functional chainsaws from his arms, legs, feet and head. These chainsaws are extremely effective at cutting Devils' flesh, allowing Denji to sever limbs[305] and bifurcate his enemies. They are also very effective at cutting other materials, such as stone and concrete[306], however they have shown to be incapable of cutting through metal[307]. The chainsaws in his legs and feet are not usually active, however, Denji can employ them just by willing it. Just like the rest of his body, these chainsaws are regenerated every time Denji pulls his cord and fully transforms.
- Chainsaw Retraction: If he needs the full use of his arms and legs to do certain tasks while in his Hybrid form, Denji's chainsaws can be retracted into his body, allowing him to perform mundane actions such as grabbing objects[308]. While Denji can willingly retract his chainsaws, they can also be retracted automatically based on his instincts alone.
- Chainsaw Wall crawling: Denji is able to manifest short chainsaws under his feet, which he can use to stick onto walls and even walk on them. He used this ability once, in order to run away from a group of dolls that were created by Santa[309].
- Chainsaw Entaglement: Denji is able to disconnect his chains from his chainsaws to use them in combat. He can wrap his chains around his opponent's body and then pull them closer to him. Denji can also wrap his chains around objects to cut them, throw them or do both[310]. If Denji's arms get torn off but are still connected to his body, he can still use his chain like body tissue to wrap his enemies around. The chains can also be used as grapple hooks, allowing Denji to wrap them around a target and then pull his body closer to said target[311].
- Devil Transformation: After surrendering his contract with Pochita, Denji transformed into a Full Devil. In this form, Pochita displays incredible speed and strength, easily defeating multiple Hybrid Devils in a matter of seconds. Though he has been shown to have taken damage, and even been incapacitated by being sent to Hell and blasted into Space, these acts merely delayed him for a few minutes before he returned unscathed. His immense power is further highlighted in Hell, where it is implied that he defeated every Demon residing there. Makima stated that he has killed her 26 times in this form. This form seems to lack Denji's personality and awareness, though it has been shown to retain some memories and frequently acts in accordance with them. After being defeated by Makima to save Kobeni and later rescued by Power, Denji transformed back to normal and regained consciousness.
- Blood Devil Contract: In exchange for finding reincarnated Blood Devil and befriending with them, Power gave all of her blood to revive Denji.
- Blood Chainsaw: Thanks to blood gained from Power, Denji is able to manifest a chainsaw from her blood. It has similar design of Power's horns. By using her blood manipulation ability, Denji is able to disturb regeneration of Makima which allowed him to defeat her.
- Devil Erasure: The Chainsaw Devil is infamously able to consume other Devils, causing the "name" they represent to vanish from public consciousness while also erasing their physical existence. Kishibe was unable to recall historical events or things such as the Holocaust, Nazis or nuclear weapons, meaning that the Chainsaw Devil at some point consumed their respective Devils[312]. The specifics of this ability are unclear; Makima was able to recall numerous erased names, and the War Devil wanted to make the Chainsaw Devil "puke" the Nuclear Weapons Devil up. The erasure process can be partial: after the War Devil was partially devoured, the concept of "war" has remained, but no more wars have broken out in the human world[313].
- Chainsaw Appendage: As an embodiment of fear of chainsaws, protruding from Pochita's head is a chainsaw shaped appendage that functions as an actual chainsaw[314].
In exchange for Denji living a "normal life", Pochita becomes the heart of Denji[315].
Pochita still can transform into his Devil form if Denji removes the heart from his body, in this form Pochita has retain a calmer personality and has two arms similar to Denji`s hybrid form, however his arms are still covered with an armor.
Other
Standard Tactics: Denji will sneak around and attack with Pochita's chainsaw.
Weaknesses: Denji has sold parts of his body just to pay off his debt, causing him to miss some kidneys and his right eye[316]. Denji is suffering from a heart condition, where he'll eventually die coughing up blood[317].
Standard Tactics: Denji will incorporate various strategies depending on the person. Mainly using his chainsaws to cut through them.
Weaknesses
- Standard Devil Weaknesses: If the name the devil is born with is not feared then the devil will be weak[318]. Devils' powers are undone when they die[319]. Fiends are weaker then they are as devils[320]. Devils become weaker if they are loved instead of feared[321].
- Unique Weaknesses: Denji ends up cutting his own body with the chainsaws, causing him to lose a lot of blood and get faint[322]. As Denji is in a contract with Pochita, if he does not honor the contract or if Pochita does not honor the contract, they will die[323].
Standard Tactics: Chainsaw Devil employs using his chainsaws to cut through enemies or cutitng their heads off with his distance negation.
