Background

Gurumin: A Monstrous Adventure is an action role-playing game released in 2004 and developed by Nihon Falcom. The player controls a young girl named Parin, who uses a drill as her primary weapon to battle phantoms threatening a village inhabited by monsters. Combat takes place in real time rather than following a turn-based system. The game also includes full voice acting for its cast.

It was originally launched for Windows and later received ports to the PlayStation Portable and Nintendo 3DS.

Development

Gurumin originally launched for Windows in 2004, making it Falcom's first wholly new IP since Zwei: The Arges Adventure in 2001. It also marked several firsts for the company: it was their first game to use 3D polygonal character models and their first PC title to include voice acting.

In 2006, the game was ported to the PlayStation Portable, which represented Falcom's debut on Sony's handheld platform. It was also the first console title the company had both developed and published themselves in eleven years, since the Super Famicom release of Ys V: Lost Kefin, Kingdom of Sand in 1995. Mastiff handled the North American and European localization of the PSP version in 2007. A Nintendo 3DS port, titled Gurumin 3D, was later released by Mastiff and included stereoscopic 3D functionality.

In 2014, Gurumin was submitted to Steam Greenlight, Valve's community-driven platform for approving games for distribution on Steam. After receiving enough votes, the PC version was re-released digitally by Mastiff on Steam and GOG.com on March 30, 2015. This version added widescreen support and newly recorded English voice acting. While Mastiff mentioned the possibility of adding Japanese language support in a future update, the game has remained English-only.

Plot

A young girl named Parin moves to Tiese Town to stay with her grandfather while her parents are away on an excavation assignment abroad. She is told there are no other children in the area, but she soon encounters a girl who appears to be threatened by a dog. Parin steps in and rescues her, only to discover that the girl is actually a monster, or obake, visible only to children. In gratitude, the monster leads Parin to a crack in the town's back wall, which serves as a gateway to the monster world.

There, a group of hostile creatures known as phantoms launches repeated assaults on Monster Village. After discovering a legendary drill, Parin takes up arms to defend the village and fight back against the phantoms.

Explanations

Dark Mist

This world is a reflection of what's in our hearts. With out village destroyed and our friends gone, the world is unstable. The Dark Mist comes from our sadness and worry.
~ Puku explaining the Dark Mist

During the early part of Gurumin, much of the world is covered in Dark Mist[1].

The world is a reflection of what's in people's hearts[1], through the village being destroyed and all of the monster friends gone, the world is now unstable[1].

The sadness and worry from this instability is what the Dark Mist comes from[1].

Through getting the monsters friends back and rebuilding the village, the world can be stabilized and in peace once more[1].

One cannot go into areas covered by Dark Mist[1]. Once all of the dark mist was gone the rip in space-time was slowly healing due to the world being at peace again, closing the entrance between the monster and human world[1].

Great Fang

It's like such a good thing Great Fang connected our worlds...
~ Cream

The world contains an enormous crevasse known as "Great Fang"[1]. It is a place connecting to other worlds[1]. It may even be connected to Parin's human world[1].

Motro describes it as a giant cleft that cuts through many worlds[1], and that Tokaron uses the Great Fang to travel between worlds[1].

Human World and Monster World

A human? Another dimensional hole must opened somewhere.
~ Doc

A monster seeing Parin assumes a dimensional hole must've opened[1], describing it as a rip in the fabric of space-time, a window into other worlds[1] which Parin notes is probably the hole in town she always goes through[1].
