| Before he was the red Ninja of Fire, '''Kai''' was a blacksmith, eldest child of Ray and Maya and brother to Nya. Unknown to both Kai and Nya, Ray and Maya were Elemental Masters of Fire and Water, respectively. Unaware of his parents being Elemental Masters, Kai was also unaware that Ray's powers had been passed onto him, making him the next Elemental Master of Fire. Early in their childhood, Ray and maya disappeared and Kai took it upon himself to look after Nya and keep the family business of blacksmithing going.

| On one fateful day, however, Kai's life changed forever when he met an elderly man who seemingly travelled from far away, looking for a ninja. Annoyed at the old man's complaints about the clunkiness of the blacksmith's armour, Kai was quick to rudely shoo him away. Shortly afterwards, the blacksmith was attacked by the four-armed Samukai and his skeleton army. When Kai attempted to defend the shop, he found that the old man was right: The armour was only useful to slow one down.

| Pinned down by his armour and at the mercy of Samukai, Kai would have become the next victim of the skeleton army had the old man not returned to save him with a mysterious martial art known as 'Spinjitzu'. While the two were preoccupied with fighting Samukai, the skeleton army kidnapped Nya, and escaped to the Underworld, revealed to be under the orders of one [[Lord Garmadon]]. The young blacksmith was more than ready to go after them himself, but was stopped by Wu, who told him of a story. A story of the creator of Ninjago.
