Monarch of Pointland
“ | "Behold yon miserable creature. That Point is a Being like ourselves, but confined to the Non-dimensional Gulf. He is himself his own World, his own Universe; of any other than himself he can form no conception; he knows not Length, nor Breadth, nor Height, for he has had no experience of them; he has no cognizance even of the number Two; nor has he a thought of Plurality; for he is himself his One and All, being really Nothing." - The Sphere describing the Monarch of Pointland | „ |
~ Chapter 20, Flatland |
Background
The Monarch of Pointland appears in Edwin Abbott's 1884 novel "Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions." It exists as the sole inhabitant and ruler of Pointland, a dimensionless realm that the Sphere shows to A Square during his metaphysical explorations. The Monarch represents the ultimate extreme of solipsistic existence, being completely unable to conceive of anything beyond itself.

Powers and Techniques
Lower-Dimensional Existence (Zero-Dimensional; Exists in "the abyss of No dimensions"), Reality Warping (Personal Reality; Controls their own universe as "his own World, his own Universe"), Omnipresence, Immortality (Types 1 and 3; Exists eternally as "Nothing and therefore All"), Self-Sustenance (All Types; Self-sustaining existence as shown by "what he thinks, that he utters; and what he utters, that he hears"), Acausality (Type 5; Exists outside normal causality as shown by having "no cognizance even of the number Two"), Power Nullification (Passive; Nullifies all external influences as "the Point has no surroundings"), Nonexistent Physiology (Literal Nonexistence; Described as "being really Nothing"), Mind Manipulation (Self Only; Interprets all external input as their own thoughts), Abstract Existence (Information; A point has Hausdorff dimension 0 and exists as a pure mathematical concept, [1])
Notable Techniques
Absolute Solipsism: The Monarch exists in a state where:
- Interprets all external input as internal thoughts
- Maintains complete control over its zero-dimensional reality
- Cannot be affected by higher dimensional beings
Dimensional Transcendence Immunity: The Monarch is immune to attempts by higher dimensional beings to make it comprehend additional dimensions
Personal Reality Maintenance: The Monarch constantly maintains its personal zero-dimensional reality through pure solipsism
Other
Standard Tactics: None - The Monarch cannot engage in tactical thinking as it cannot perceive anything beyond itself
Weaknesses:
- Complete inability to perceive or interact with higher dimensions
- Cannot learn or grow due to solipsistic nature
- Cannot move or change
- Unable to comprehend the existence of other beings or dimensions
