Background

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Afton’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

William Afton was a businessman, entrepreneur, and robotics engineer who founded Afton Robotics, LLC and co-founded Fazbear Entertainment, Inc. He was married to an unnamed wife and had three children: his eldest son Michael, his only daughter Elizabeth, and his youngest son, who was not named.

At some point before 1983, William met Henry Emily, and the two became close colleagues. Around 1982, they opened their first location together, Fredbear's Family Diner. In 1983, they opened a second location, Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. William murdered Henry's daughter, Charlotte Emily, outside the establishment for reasons that remain unclear. Not long after, William's youngest son was accidentally killed by Michael, who shoved him into Fredbear's mouth during a prank, crushing his skull. This led to Fredbear's closing and may have deepened William's resentment toward Michael.

On June 26, 1985, William killed five children—Gabriel, Jeremy, Susie, Fritz, and Cassidy—at Freddy's while wearing a Spring Bonnie costume to gain their trust. He was caught on camera and arrested, but the bodies were never found, and he was released due to lack of evidence. The children's spirits later possessed the animatronics: Freddy Fazbear, Bonnie, Chica, Foxy, and Golden Freddy, with help from the Puppet, who was possessed by Charlie. The spirits became hostile toward adults, causing the animatronics to attack anyone in the building after dark. Customers began noticing blood and mucus seeping from the animatronics, leading to the restaurant's closure and the company being sold.

After Freddy's closed, William opened Circus Baby's Pizza World with a new line of animatronics called the Funtime Animatronics. One of them, Circus Baby, was designed in honor of Elizabeth. However, William did not build these robots for entertainment; he intended them to capture and kill children in order to extract Remnant, a supernatural substance he discovered from the haunted animatronics. Elizabeth was warned to stay away from Baby, but she disobeyed and was killed. The pizzeria's grand opening was canceled, and the incident was covered up as a gas leak.

William then opened Circus Baby's Entertainment and Rental, which allowed customers to rent the Funtime Animatronics for private events. He later sold the rights to Fazbear Entertainment. At some point, he sent Michael into the facility to free Elizabeth's spirit, which was possessing Baby.

In 1987, William, using a new alias, killed five more children at the New Freddy Fazbear's Pizza location. Their spirits are implied to haunt the Toy Animatronics, though these children are never mentioned again. William vanished once more.

In the early to mid-90s, William returned to the abandoned Freddy's location to dismantle the original animatronics. However, he awoke the spirits of the five children he had killed, and they pursued him. He fled into the safe room, where Spring Bonnie was stored, and put on the suit to hide. Believing he had fooled them, he laughed at the ghosts, but the springlock mechanisms failed, causing the suit to snap shut around him and mutilate his body. He died a slow, agonizing death and remained trapped in the suit.

Thirty years later, Fazbear's Fright: The Horror Attraction was built as a tribute to the franchise's infamous history. Employees discovered the Spring Bonnie suit in the old safe room and brought it to the attraction. William's corpse was reanimated inside the suit, allowing him to return as Springtrap. He stalked the night guard for less than a week before the building burned down.

Springtrap survived the fire, as shown in the Sister Location cutscene. His fate was later revealed in Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria Simulator: he left the ruins of Fazbear's Fright and repaired himself, becoming Scraptrap. He was eventually salvaged and brought into Freddy Fazbear's Pizza Place, where Henry set the building on fire as part of his plan for revenge. Most of the souls were laid to rest, but two remained: William and the vengeful spirit of Golden Freddy, Cassidy.

Cassidy refused to let William die and trapped him in a nightmare construct of his past, where he was tortured by apparitions of his victims and creations.

William later escaped and returned as a digital virus known as Glitchtrap. When the developers of the Freddy Fazbear Virtual Experience scanned Scraptrap's circuit boards, William's consciousness was uploaded into the game. He invaded the mind of a beta tester and brainwashed her into carrying out his work at the Mega Pizzaplex.

Residing in the ruins of the old pizzeria beneath the Mega Pizzaplex, William transferred his soul into his original, burned body, which Vanny had repaired and modified. He became Burntrap and attempted to take control of Glamrock Freddy through security monitors. He also sent Glamrock Chica, Roxanne Wolf, and Montgomery Gator to kill Gregory. Gregory reactivated the burning room trap that Henry had used before, and as William tried to escape, a massive animatronic amalgamation known as The Blob grabbed him and dragged him into the ceiling. His current fate remains unknown.

Appearance

General Description: The physical description of William's original human form is largely unknown, as he is only seen in human form in some minigames. His sprite is stylized with color ranges from various tones of purple depending on the minigame. His mouth appears to almost always be put in the form of an elongated sadistic smile. He is seen as having a cleft chin outside of the minigames. In the SAVETHEM death minigame, he is revealed to be a tall skinny man with a long neck, a yellow object on his chest resembling a security badge, and holds a purple object.

Incarnations:

Springtrap (Five Nights at Freddy's 3): Springtrap is William's first incarnation, appearing as a reanimated corpse sealed in a heavily damaged Spring Bonnie animatronic or springlock suit. The suit is a drab olive color with darker colors on his stomach and the insides of his ears. A great portion of his right ear is missing, with a single red wire sticking out of the stump. His entire body is torn and tattered with gaping holes bearing exposed wires and caging. His green, brown, and black nose has an irregular squarish shape due to deterioration. His legs are stripped from the mid-shin down, exposing endoskeleton wiring and metal. Several finger joints from each hand are missing their suit overlays. A single black button is on the middle of his chest. Through the large hole in his chest, William's broken body can be seen. He has a wide, permanent grin. His endoskeleton feet are wedge-shaped with five toes each. His eyes are pale gray with visible blood vessels and appear to be glowing. His head, bits of flesh, and blood vessels are visible. His jaw can be seen moving on occasion.

Help Wanted Design: The suit is a lighter color. The eyes are bright green with black pupils, looking more animatronic than human. The corpse's head is dark purple, while the rest of the flesh is dark brown. Parts of the flesh are missing, such as strands on the lower legs and flesh from the torso to the pelvis. His endoskeleton is rustier and slightly less detailed.

Special Delivery Design: Closer to the Five Nights at Freddy's 3 design with slightly different textures. William's mouth moves alongside his jaw. The more damage Springtrap takes, the more broken he appears, gaining more dark burn and dirt marks over time.

Scraptrap (Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria Simulator): William returns with a new design. His interior is now mostly organic, showing his human skeleton and flesh with five bony fingers as his right hand. There are more torn patches in his suit with multiple metal wires. He has lost his left forearm, half his left ear, and the rest of his right ear. His feet now have fabric over them with three large, round toes on each foot. His eyes no longer glow and look completely metallic. The mask has much larger eye sockets, a black nose, a square muzzle, a singular pair of buck teeth at the top row, and small sharp needle-like teeth at the bottom. His mummified head is clean of blood with ears, thicker lips, rigged teeth, and a dimple. Exposed muscle tissue appears on his forehead and cheeks.

Glitchtrap (Help Wanted): Glitchtrap is a digital manifestation of William Afton, taking the form of a man wearing a cartoonish Spring Bonnie costume based on a poster from Fredbear's Family Diner. He is a grinning, bipedal, golden-yellow rabbit. He wears a purple star-speckled vest, a purple bow tie, and two black buttons near the top of his chest. Stitches stretch across his waving hand. He initially appears translucent, progressing into a less-spectral form over time. He has vivid purple eyes with small pupils, large whiskers on each side of his face, three eyelashes on both eyes, and large arching eyebrows. In Blacklight Mode, his eyes turn blue with white, circular pupils.

Burntrap (Security Breach): Burntrap is William's form as the optional final boss in the Afton Ending. He wears a modified tattered greenish-brown Spring Bonnie suit that has become even more severely withered, tattered, and burned. The entire lower jaw is ripped out, revealing his skull covered in blood with some burnt flesh remaining. His eyes are metallic black with small purple pupils. The suit is missing fur except for his chest, hips, left foot, and upper left leg, which were burned away, revealing more of his corpse's charred remains. His old endoskeleton seems to have been fixed using parts from new Glamrock Endoskeletons, rebuilding his left forearm and sharp claws.

Alternate Forms/Disguises: Springtrap, Scraptrap, Glitchtrap, and Burntrap are considered alternate forms of William Afton.

Personality

  • Wicked, Cold-Blooded, and Methodical: William Afton is wicked, cold-blooded, and methodical, showing no remorse for his actions. He murdered almost a dozen children and sparked the downfall of Fazbear Entertainment. He murdered his friend Henry's daughter Charlotte, causing Henry immense emotional turmoil.
  • Sadistic and Ruthless: William smiles in an unhinged manner during his killings. In the "Pizza Party" minigame, Glitchtrap dances gleefully after murdering his victim and taunts them while they suffer a slow death. He takes delight, satisfaction, and pride in murder and savors watching his victims suffer, especially children.
  • Opportunistic: One of William's voice lines suggests he is opportunistic and will proceed with his intentions regardless of the risks.
  • Calm, Neutral, and Manipulative: In Sister Location's opening cutscene, William shows a calm and neutral personality to hide his true intentions. He is a manipulator and theatrical, able to put on a character to fool people.
  • Genius Level Intellect: William has a genius level intellect and talent for robotics, creating the advanced Funtime animatronics. He is proud of his creations and fascinated by how they changed.
  • Arrogant, Boastful, and Overconfident: William's voice lines indicate he is arrogant, boastful, and overconfident. He wants his victims to fear and respect him and suffer slowly before he kills them. His mannerisms are flamboyant and unhinged. His hubris grew as he never faced consequences for his crimes.
  • Not Insane: William most likely is not insane. He does not care for the difference between right and wrong and simply chooses to be evil to achieve his twisted desires.
  • Fears His Own Death: William's greatest fear is his own death. He cowers in fear while facing the vengeful ghosts of his victims. He has developed an unbreakable iron will to live, pushing him to survive deadly situations. He confidently states "I always come back." He is cowardly at his core when facing death and retribution, knowing Hell awaits him.
  • Loved His Daughter Elizabeth: It is implied William loved his daughter Elizabeth, doing everything he could to keep her away from Circus Baby, as he programmed the animatronic to kill children. His relationship with his son Michael is relatively unknown.

Alignment: Chaotic Evil (Afton is a vicious serial killer who has killed multiple children without any remorse, even hiding the bodies during the act. He seems to take pleasure in doing so as he smiles during any instance of his murder, often doing so by using a Spring Bonnie costume to lure them. An instance is killing Susie's dog and lying that they aren't dead, only to kill them after. Or when he killed his co-worker's 3 year old daughter outside and drove off. Another method is with his creation of the Funtime Animatronics, which were built to lure kids and capture them, ultimately killing them in the process. This ended up causing the death of his daughter Elizabeth, and the murders of other children. It's also seen within Sister Location that he sets up cameras in his son's room along with a microphone to stalk and watch over him. It's also heavily implied within Pizzeria Simulator that he also abuses them, as his son locks his door in fear, along with Michael asking him to leave him alone. Afton then pounded at the door and shouted at him to open it, only to realize and ran off while noting that he'd be sorry once returning home. It's suggested from the books that Afton's murders and tampering with possessed spirits is to harvest their remnant to become immortal. After his death and becoming Springtrap, Afton's motives never changed. He still attempts to commit murder by trying to kill the night guard, and later attempt at killing his first son, Michael. Upon becoming a virus known as Glitchtrap, he uses this form to capture and possess the minds of new players testing out the VR game. He uses Vanny as a host for his hivemind to commit more murders, gathering more and more killers. He then uses his Glitchtrap self to rebuild himself as Burntrap, ultimately having a never-ending lust for murder)

Powers and Techniques

Superhuman Physical Characteristics, Stealth Mastery (Could sneak around Freddy[23] and several other robots[24]. Comparable to his Springtrap-self, who can sneak around Fazbear's Fright[25]. Able to pull off many kills in a restaurant without getting captured by the cameras[26]), Self-Sustenance (Respiratory, Nutritional, & Restful; Has been locked up in the Spring Bonnie suit for decades while stuck in the safe room), Sheer Will & Limited Fusionism (Like others in the verse[27], his sheer will of vengeance melded[28] into the animatronic, making his body one with it[29]. Even if their bodies are separate from the animatronics, they can retain a form of[30] sorts that are incorporeal[31]), Social Influencing (Was able to trick and lure kids into the backrooms to kill them several times[32]), Genius Intelligence, Pain Tolerance (Withstood the springlocks failing on him[33] being in this state of constant pain for[34] 30 years. Afton describes the process of the springlocks failing as: "And if you trigger those spring locks, two things will happen: first the locks themselves will snap right into you, making deep cuts all over your body, and a split second later, all the animatronic parts, all that sharp steel and hard plastic will instantly be driven into your body. You will die, but it will be slow. You’ll feel your organs punctured, the suit will grow wet with your blood, and you will know you’re dying for long, long minutes. You’ll try to scream, but you will be unable to: your vocal cords will be severed, and your lungs will fill with your own blood until you drown in it."[35]. The springlocks have also caused multiple deaths in the past[36]), Sound Manipulation, Perception Manipulation, Illusion Manipulation, & Mind Manipulation (Afton created a chip and disc that produces a sound wave. This makes the person's mind overwhelmed, making them think of what they should be, causing people and their surroundings to change shape and distorting one's mind[37]. This applies to the games as similar chips can be seen within the Funtimes[38], and the plot of Afton's animatronics engulfing people is also seen within Sister Location[39])

Superhuman Physical Characteristics, Body Control (Animatronics can be dismantled, such as Mangle[40] and move around despite that), Enhanced Senses (Can see and move around in the dark[41]), Stealth Mastery (All animatronics are capable of hiding within the cameras, requiring the night guard to use the technology of the building to find them[42]. Can quickly leave out of sight once a room goes dark[43]), Berserk Mode (It's stated that animatronics becomes more active as the week progresses[44]), Self-Sustenance (Respiratory Self-Sustenance, Nutritional Self-Sustenance, & Restful Self-Sustenance), Limited Creation (Baby can dispense ice cream[45]), Natural Weaponry (Circus Baby and Funtime Freddy have a giant claw located from their stomach[46]), Body Control (The Funtimes can open up their face[47]), Social Influencing (Circus Baby lured her brother into the scooping room after easing him in and giving him false directions[48]), Sealing (Funtime Freddy's body can be used to contain people[49]), Technological Manipulation (Bonnie's mere appearance causes the technology to flicker and turn off[50], all animatronics upon entering a room causes the camera to go static[51]), Sound Manipulation (Baby can play songs and song requests[52]. Funtime Foxy can mimic voices from other people and replay phrases[53]. Ballora has an audio activation sensor that plays a noise to lure people[54]. Ballora also has a collision sensor that detects whenever she's about to hit something[55]), Perception Manipulation, Illusion Manipulation (Standard Ilusions), & Mind Manipulation (Afton created a chip and disc that produces a sound wave. This makes the person's mind overwhelmed, making them think of what they should be, causing people and their surroundings to change shape and distorting one's mind[56]. This applies to the games as similar chips can be seen within the Funtimes[57], and the plot of Afton's animatronics engulfing people is also seen within Sister Location[58]), Air Manipulation (Baby's fingertips can blow air[59]), Fragrance Manipulation (Funtime Foxy can release a scent that lures people[60]).

Resistance to Electricity Manipulation (Every animatronic in Pizzeria Simulator can be shocked without much damage[61]. Sister Location animatronics can take controlled shocks[62])

Same as before, Resurrection & Reliance (On Person; Is brought back[63] by[64] The One You Shouldn't Have Killed every time[65] he[66] dies[67] as[68] a way to torture him[69]), Mortality Manipulation (Metaphysical; With the Death Coin, which kills off an animatronic), Limited Technological Manipulation (Via Battery, can get 102% power), Cold Manipulation (Via Frigid, which makes the office start at a cool 50 degrees), Limited Light Manipulation (Via Flashlight), Battlefield Removal (With DD Repel, which prevents Dee Dee from appearing), Limited Electricity Manipulation (Can use a machine to produce a controlled shock[70])

Superhuman Physical Characteristics, Body Control (Animatronics can be dismantled, such as Mangle[71] and move around despite that), Enhanced Senses (Can see and move around in the dark[72]), Stealth Mastery (All animatronics are capable of hiding within the cameras, requiring the night guard to use the technology of the building to find them[73]. Can quickly leave out of sight once a room goes dark[74]), Self-Sustenance (Respiratory Self-Sustenance, Nutritional Self-Sustenance, & Restful Self-Sustenance), Technological Manipulation (Bonnie's mere appearance causes the technology to flicker and turn off[75], all animatronics upon entering a room causes the camera to go static[76]), Berserk Mode (It's stated that animatronics becomes more active as the week progresses[77]).

Resistance to Electricity Manipulation (Every animatronic in Pizzeria Simulator can be shocked without much damage[78]. Sister Location animatronics can take controlled shocks[79])

Illusion Creation ("Real"; Springtrap is the source of the Phantom Animatronics chasing you in FNaF 3. These phantoms are capable of malfunctioning technology, cause your vision to black out[80], and are realistic enough to create noise, alongside with having a reflection[81]. In an extended story, these phantoms are also capable of causing the victim to simulate pain, cause traumatic flashbacks, change the environment around them, cause self-harm when trying to attack back, morph into other people, and give you the idea that your environment is on fire. This led to Hudson's death of both him stabbing himself to eventually burning himself[82]).

Resistance to Fire Manipulation (Managed to survive the burning of Fazbear's Fright), Sound Manipulation, Perception Manipulation, Illusion Manipulation, & Mind Manipulation (Appears to be unaffected by his own chip causing people to hallucinate)

Reliance (On Object; Survived having his "code" split[83] apart[84], and will survive as long any part of his code exist), Possession (Can possess[85] any player inside the VR headset), Teleportation, Data Manipulation (Glitchtrap's presence causes the game to corrupt[86]), Madness Manipulation (Drove[87] Jeremy insane through unknown means[88]), Immersion (Can go into the real world via possession), Dream Manipulation (Gave Jeremey vicious nightmares and night terrors[89]), Mind Manipulation (Could cause digital conciseness transference[90]), Small Size (Microscopic), Self-Sustenance (Respiratory Self-Sustenance, Nutritional Self-Sustenance, & Restful Self-Sustenance), Inorganic Physiology (Non-living Object), Personal Nonexistence (Physical Nonexistence; Seemingly still exists after code is erased), Sealing (Can trap people within the game[91])

Other

Standard Tactics:

Due to being within an animatronic, each animatronic has a movement cycle they go by, Springtrap can enter every room and vent, and therefore, can be seen by every camera unless he is in the Office, the hallway, or outside the Office's doorway. He has two positions per camera, excluding the Vent Cams and CAM 01. There is no known fixed location where he starts, but he generally begins his path from CAM 07, CAM 08, and CAM 09. Springtrap acts in a very human-like manner, usually going to more secluded areas of a camera's field of view to attempt to hide from the player. However, he will stare straight into CAM 01, CAM 09, and CAM 13. When around the Office, Springtrap will lurk around and even stare at the player through the window. On occasions when he is about to attack, he will peek in from behind the door, simply staring dead ahead at the player. He will also briefly appear from the right, only to slink away from the player's peripheral vision. Occasionally, Springtrap may run across the screen when the camera monitor is being used, meaning he will briefly be seen.

The animatronics of Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria Simulator share the same behavior: all four are attracted to sound. During the management portion of the day, the player must do tasks such as ordering supplies, printing flyers, and doing maintenance. Each of these (as well as the computer itself and the fan) make noise that draws in the animatronics. However, they can be misled using an audio system (similar to that of Five Nights at Freddy's 3) to lure them around the vents, and the player can also reduce their presence by shutting down the computer and the fan. Should an animatronic be ready to attack in the vent, the Player can shine their flashlight into the vent to force them away.

Springtrap climbs around in the vent system, making his way toward the vent opening embedded in the wall in front of the player. They must track him by watching the vent monitor. He moves silently, so listening for him is not necessary. When he is poised to attack, his face will be visible from the vent. The player should then shut the vent door on him to send him away. If successful, he will return to the start of the air vent, and his behavior repeats.

Scraptrap will only attack once per night, and there will be no way of knowing in advance when this attack will happen, or if it will happen at all. He will always attack from the vent on the right wall, and when he does, there will be a violent clamoring sound in the vent and the lights will flicker. When this happens, the player will have only a fraction of a second to close the vent door or the run will end with Scraptrap getting in and killing the player.

Attempts to possess a player as Glitchtrap.

Attempts to possess someone as Burntrap.

Weaknesses: As Springtrap, he gets lured to locations if hearing a child's voice[95]. If it hits 6 AM, Springtrap no longer targets, though what he exactly does is unknown[96]. Bright light will send him back as Scraptrap[97].

Note

  • This profile uses certain parts of the original novel as they are treated as a secondary canon due to being considered an alternate timeline. The same applies for Fazbears Frights.
  • Despite Burntrap's ending in Security Breach not happening, it should still be regarded as plausible due to Tangle still being depicted as existing, thus it's likely that Burntrap isn't activated yet. He will keep his key on the idea that's not active or still stuck with Tangle.

  11. "The truth is that after a while lore can become so dense that there isn't room for a story anymore. Another truth is that what makes for a good game doesn't necessarily make for a good book. Sometimes a timeline gets so full that the only way to tell a real story is have the story set in a different timeline, an alternate universe, a different location, or perhaps from a vantage point that isn't entirely what it appears to be."
