Determination

Determination is power named by Dr. Alphys in Undertale. It is described as the ability human SOULS have allowing them to persist after death, have the will to keep living, and the resolve to change fate itself. It's a power that allowed the humans to easily defeat the monsters in their war.

Throughout Undertale, the only true determination users are from humans. Monsters do not possess enough physical matter to withstand the concentrations of determination, making them lose whatever physicality they had left.

Standard Determination

These are the natural applications of determination users that they pertain even when one with greater determination exists.

• Sheer Will (Determination is the extraction from the human SOULs that give them the strength to persist after death, the will to keep living, the resolve to change fate. The act of sparing in Undertale is defined as an aura of peaceful determination exuding from one's body and causing any enemy questioning the desire to fight to give up though this can only be done after an enemy is fully convinced)
• Existence Continuity
  • Reset Awareness: Determination users can remember resets.
• Limited Nullification
  • Power Nullification: A determination user can have their desires override other determination users desires for the world making them unable to do things like SAVE. However, this is only in reference to abilities that require a strong desire over the world to work.

Filled With Determination

These are determination users filled with determination, having the greatest amount compared to anyone else being at their strongest mentally and physically during this, where their desires for the world override other determination users.

• Sheer Will
• Reality Warping (Determination is described as the power to re-shape the world purely by their own determination and the ability to play God. Flowey attempting to take his own life instead wanted to live and due to this he kept reviving back to his previous "save point")
  • Time Travel & Timeline Hopping (Travels back to a specific point in time while hopping through timelines)
  • Temporal Reload (Determination users have the ability to "SAVE")
  • Resurrection
    • Self-Resurrection
      • Resurrection of the Deceased: Determination users of this scale have it where even if they meet someone that makes them unable to use their SAVE File they will still refuse death itself getting all of their health back.
  • Subjective Reality & Creation (SAVE points are the manifestation of one's own determination. The Human can create “last dream” to heal themself)
  • Possible Fate Manipulation (Determination gives the user the ability to change fate itself, and events to allow them to live even outside of merely time traveling. Examples include Papyrus' special attack suddenly taken over by the dog, and Papyrus states that if special attack was used the human would've of died, Undyne's failure to capture The Human on multiple occasions due to Monster Kid bothering her or she uses random tactics such as letting a bridge's fall kill the human and not check to see if they died herself, and Napstablook showing up out of nowhere to save The Human during Mad Dummy)
  • Statistics Amplification (The Human used determination to continuously amplify themselves to have damage reduced from attacks)
• Users of this level of Determination can perform a True Reset which can do the following:
  • Reality Warping (The True Reset is a power allowing one to set everything back to a blank and neutral state where no one remembers anything even characters that can remember regular resets)
    • Erasure
      • Existence Erasure: Flowey notes that the True Reset has the power to erase EVERYTHING, to the point that it even erases the memories of those that could remember standard resets like Flowey.
    • Time Manipulation (The true reset rips everyone from the timeline and sends them back before any of the events of Undertale ever happened)
    • Information Manipulation & Data Manipulation (A true reset thoroughly erases all information in one’s file, resetting it back to 0. Chara with the true reset set a permanent flag that cannot be removed without non-canon hacking)

Injected Monsters Determination

These are determination users that were injected with Determination during Alphys' true lab entries

• Sheer Will
• Breaking the Fourth Wall (Amalgamates can do things like put pieces of itself in The Human's inventory)
• Transformation
  • Shapeshifting: Amalgamates can freely change their shape and bodies even matching the color and texture of the object, and being the very battle exclamation icon.

Unnatural Determination

These are determination users that have gotten their determination through unnatural means, such as Flowey absorbing the six human SOULs, or absorbing the entire Underground to regain his form as Asriel Dreemurr

• Sheer Will
• Time Travel & Timeline Hopping (Users with a greater amount of determination can use this to save and load through all existing timelines)
• Limited Reality Seperation (Reality Separation; Exist outside of reality as shown in the scene where Flowey X creates a SAVE File that the human is outside of within his SAVE File is the human’s original SAVE File which Flowey X comes out of)
• Erasure
  • Space-Time Erasure (3+1-D): Erased all inhabitants of the current timeline and a save file.
• Reality Warping (Flowey X re-shaped the world in his own image)
• Information Manipulation & Fate Manipulation (Flowey X re-wrote the history of the war between monsters and humans)

Weaknesses

• A determination user can have their desires override other determination users desires for the world making them unable to do things like SAVE.
• Humans ability to persist after death can be used against them, such as sealing their SOULs in containers.
• Sans' plan to deal with a determination user is to get them to give up, either through boring them or making them hit an unreachable point.
