Background

This dropdown contains the synopsis of The Human’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

Neutral Route
Flowey tries to kill the human after pretending to offer genuine advice. Toriel intervenes, strikes him with fire magic, and takes on the role of a guide through the Ruins. At the end of a long corridor, she asks the human to wait for her while she runs errands. To keep them safe, she gives them a cell phone.

The human makes their way through the remaining puzzles and eventually reaches Toriel's house. They ask how to leave the Ruins, which prompts Toriel to destroy the exit. She then fights the human to test if they can survive outside.

The human later meets Sans and Papyrus in Snowdin Forest. The brothers set up traps and puzzles in an attempt to catch them. After navigating through Snowdin, Papyrus battles the human.

Undyne, the captain of the Royal Guard, chases the human through Waterfall. Monster Kid frequently gets in the way, unintentionally saving the human because they are too excited watching Undyne. During the chase, Undyne destroys a bridge beneath the human, causing them to fall into the Garbage Dump. Before getting up, they experience a flashback of the first human. In the dump, Mad Dummy challenges the human, accusing them of mistreating their cousin, Dummy, in the Ruins. At the end of Waterfall, Undyne confronts the human on a cliff and fights them.

After entering Hotland, the human discovers Alphys's lab and meets both Alphys and Mettaton. Alphys insists she is not a villain, but Mettaton interrupts with a quiz show. Afterward, Alphys upgrades the human's phone and guides them through Hotland and the CORE, helping with puzzles and avoiding Mettaton. Before the final battle in the CORE, Mettaton reveals that Alphys created all the traps in Hotland to impress the human. He then transforms into Mettaton EX and fights them.

As the human passes through New Home, they hear the story of Asgore and Toriel's children from the monsters living there. Sans then confronts the human in the Last Corridor, explaining LOVE and EXP while emphasizing the human's importance to the world's fate.

In the Throne Room, the human meets Asgore, who tries to make small talk before acknowledging their inevitable battle. They walk to the Barrier, and Asgore gives the human a chance to leave before fighting. Just before the battle begins, Asgore shows the six human SOULs and destroys the MERCY button, making it impossible to spare or flee. At the end of the fight, the human can choose to spare or kill Asgore. Regardless of the decision, Flowey appears, destroys Asgore's SOUL, and takes the human SOULs. The game then closes abruptly.

Upon reopening, the human finds that Flowey has overwritten their SAVE file using the stolen SOULs. Loading his game, the human faces a powered-up Flowey and enters a seemingly unwinnable battle. After calling for help multiple times, the stolen SOULs begin to rebel. They heal the human, weaken Flowey, and leave him vulnerable. Once his HP reaches zero, the SOULs strip him of his ability to SAVE or LOAD, then leave. The human can choose to kill or spare Flowey before leaving the Underground and returning to the surface.

After leaving, Sans calls and leaves a message about what happened in the Underground following Asgore's death. The content varies depending on which monsters were killed and which friendships were formed.

True Pacifist Route
To reach the True Pacifist ending, the human must have completed at least one Neutral Route first. If the human finished the Neutral Route without gaining any EXP or LV, they can backtrack in their current SAVE file to complete any remaining friendships and then proceed to the True Pacifist ending. If the human has gained any EXP or LV, they must reset the game entirely.

Although the human befriends many monsters, only three friendships are required to achieve the True Pacifist ending: those with Undyne, Papyrus, and Alphys.

Papyrus's friendship is obtained by visiting his house and hanging out or dating him. Undyne can be befriended if the human gave her water after being chased, provided they have not gained any EXP beforehand. Otherwise, a reset is needed. With Papyrus's help, the human visits Undyne, who tries to get "revenge" by befriending them. She accidentally sets her house on fire in the process, tries to fight the human to restore her honor, but ultimately acknowledges the human's kindness and decides to be friends. She later gives the human a love letter to deliver to Alphys, which leads to a date where the two realize their feelings for each other, and Alphys begins to confront her past mistakes.

After befriending Alphys, Papyrus suggests visiting her lab. Inside, the human finds a letter on the floor that provides instructions and a monologue. Walking through the bathroom door leads to an elevator that descends to the True Lab after a malfunction. There, the human learns about Alphys's failed experiments with determination and the origin of Flowey. After exploring the True Lab and speaking with Alphys, she gains the confidence to reveal the truth about her experiments to the Underground. While leaving, the human receives a phone call from an unknown voice in the elevator, which forcibly takes them to New Home.

Back in the throne room, the human confronts Asgore again, but Toriel interrupts before the fight begins. Other main characters follow, encouraging peace. Papyrus reveals it was a small flower that brought everyone together. Flowey appears, having stolen the six human SOULs again, and attacks. The other monsters protect the human, and all of the Underground's monsters arrive to encourage them. However, Flowey reveals that this was his plan all along, allowing him to absorb the SOULs of every monster along with the six human SOULs. With this power, he transforms into his true form, Asriel Dreemurr.

During the fight, the human is invincible. Instead of dying, their heart breaks and reforms. After enough time passes, Asriel transforms again. The human can sense the SOULs of Toriel, Asgore, Alphys, Undyne, Papyrus, and Sans within Asriel. The ACT button changes to SAVE, and the human can free each soul by completing short sequences to restore their memories. After saving each monster, the human realizes there is one more soul to save. They choose to save "someone else," triggering a slideshow of Asriel's memories with the first human. This someone else is Asriel himself, and he begins to feel the love the monsters have for the human through the absorbed SOULs, losing his will to fight.

Asriel reverts to his child form, learns the human's name, Frisk, and apologizes for his actions. Frisk can choose to forgive him or not. Regardless, Asriel uses the power of the SOULs to destroy the barrier and then releases them. Knowing he will return to being a flower without the SOULs, he says goodbye and leaves. Frisk wakes up in front of the main characters, who know Frisk's name but remember little about Flowey or Asriel. Frisk can explore the Underground and speak with other monsters before heading to the surface.

If Frisk goes through the Ruins, they find Asriel tending to the Golden Flowers. He asks why Frisk climbed Mt. Ebott in the first place. Receiving no answer, he suggests foolishness or fate as possibilities but concludes that only Frisk truly knows. After passing through the final door, Frisk leaves the Underground with their friends. Asgore offers Frisk the role of ambassador to humans. Most of the main cast leaves, and Toriel asks about Frisk's plans. Frisk can choose to stay with Toriel or go elsewhere. If they stay, the ending shows Frisk sleeping while Toriel brings them pie. If they choose to go, Toriel says goodbye, and the game ends with a group photo of the main cast with Frisk in the center.

Genocide Route
Throughout the Genocide Route, numerous characters point out the protagonist's unsettling smile. Sans remarks that it would be nice if they kept up the act of being human, while Asgore wonders what kind of creature they really are. Near the end of the Ruins and again while traveling through New Home, Flowey notices that the protagonist is hollow inside, much like himself. He comes to the conclusion that the protagonist is Chara and mentions a plan to achieve ultimate power.

Appearance

General Description: Frisk is a yellow-skinned human child with medium-length straight red-brown hair, short and choppy bangs, and a blank expression. Though Frisk does not show much expression in the overworld, NPCs often describe Frisk's expressions. They have no stated gender and are solely referred to with "they/them" pronouns throughout the game or by generic terms such as "child," "human," or "kid."

Facial Features: They have medium-length straight red-brown hair with short and choppy bangs. Their expression is typically blank in the overworld.

Clothing/Outfit: A long-sleeve light blue shirt with two magenta stripes. Light blue pants, often depicted as shorts in official Undertale merchandise. Red-brown shoes, usually depicted as black or in a darker tone.

Personality

  • Ambiguous and Player-Determined: The Human's personality is usually ambiguous, allowing The Anomaly to project any personality onto them. They are often speechless, but speak to NPCs throughout the game, especially when ACTing in encounters.
  • Actions change dependent on LOVE: The narration describing The Human's actions occasionally changes depending on their LOVE.
  • Can be either Kind or Violent: Depending on The Anomaly's actions, The Human can be interpreted as merciful and kind or merciless and violent. Some NPCs emphasize The Human's kindness, understanding, and grace in the epilogue.
  • Obedient: The Human is obedient and only disallows The Anomaly's input when following someone else's instructions, such as hiding behind the lamp when Sans tells them to.
  • Dislikes Soda: The Human has shown to dislike soda, their face not looking happy when choosing it in the Undyne house segment.

Notable Techniques

FIGHT

The Human is prompted to pick an enemy to attack. The Human can attack one enemy each turn.

ACT

The Human is prompted to select an enemy, and is then given one or more ACT options which are specific to that enemy.

ITEM

Using consumable items regains health. Some consumable items are capable of increasing stats. Using equipment items other than the Bandage or Stick equips them.

MERCY

Sparing means that Frisk does not want to fight. The Human is encouraged on multiple occasions on their journey to show mercy to the opponents they fight.

Other

Standard Tactics: The Human's tactics depends on the route Frisk is on. If neutral, The Human's tactic normally will be to attack if necessary and use the ACT command to find out things about their enemy and find potential alternatives to the fight. If the pacifist route the human will never use the FIGHT command, unless absolutely necessary, going for ACT and MERCY tactics. Genocide route the human will go striaght for the FIGHT command, always attempting to slaughter all the opponents in their way. Even with these routes in mind, the human is still technically a wild card as they could switch at any moment, such as they could be on their pacifist route and suddenly opt to murder enemies and vice versa with the genocide route.

Weaknesses

Note

Explanations

Monster Check Stats

Monster's check stats are quite dubious for a couple of reasons:

On top of these, genocide route has the check stats differ too with confusing changes, while the human's killing intent is a reason behind this, some characters have their defense stats raise such as Papyrus'. There's also inconsistencies even in these routes, for example The Human at a level 3 killing intent one-shots Toriel[83] yet The Human at level 13 can still only chip damage Asgore[84].

It should also be noted, the argument that Toriel sent Asgore flying with her fire, has an issue it was an off guard hit[85] which it has been shown off-guard/betrayal kills can one-shot monsters as they lowered their guard[86].

Magic vs. Physicality

Monsters are mostly made of magic while human beings are mostly made of water[87] making humans with their physical forms far stronger then them[87]. However humans have lost the ability to use magic by proxy[87].

Monsters bodies being made of magic has their body physically attuned to their SOUL[88]. Due to this, monsters that don't want to fight have their defenses weaken[88] and one with more killing intent and crueller intentions will inflict more damage on them[88]. This is due to a monsters SOUL being made of love, hope, and compassion[89].

Monsters bodies being made of magic also makes it where they do not possess enough physical matter to take concentrations of determination[90].

In the Undertale 10th Anniversary Livestream Gerson reveals that humanity once had magic too but creating the barrier that separated humans and monsters caused them to use up all their magic[91].

Trivia

Spoilers!
  • The word "frisk" can mean several things:
    • To "frisk" means to skip or leap playfully, or to pat down on someone, looking for a hidden item.
    • "Frisk" is the Swedish and Norwegian word for "healthy," and the Danish word for "fresh."
    • "Frisky" means "playful and full of energy."
  • Naming the fallen human "Frisk" initiates Hard Mode.
  • When just tapping right, Frisk does not put their foot up. This is not true for the other directions.
  • When holding up and down on the north wall of any room, Frisk will appear to flash quickly between their two north and south sprites.
    • This is informally called as the Frisk dance by players such as Merg.
    • When in the room overlooking the castle with the Monster Kid and going either left or right while holding up and down, Frisk walks twice as fast.
  • Frisk appears to be left-handed. Evidence includes:
    • Holding the umbrella and glass of water using their left hand.
    • The slicing attack animation curving to the right, implying that force was carried from the left to the right during the attack.
      • Most fatality battle sprites display steep slashes from top left to bottom right, a pattern not commonly made by someone who is right-handed.
  • While Frisk is allergic to Temmie,[92] this is not true of the other furry residents of the Underground.
  • When hugging Asriel, other purple stripes appear on Frisk's shirt sleeves.
  • At the end of the True Pacifist Route, Napstablook was the only monster who did not know Frisk's name until they mention it.[93]
  • Frisk is the last of the eight humans to fall into the Underground after traveling to Mount Ebott. Out of all the humans that fell, Frisk is the only human to survive the adventure in any ending.
  • Frisk is only alluded to in Flowey's UNDERTALE Alarm Clock App dialogue, where one of his talksprites mimics their blank expression.
  • Toby Fox was asked two interview questions regarding Frisk. One was whether Frisk's pronoun is a design choice, and in regards to Frisk's parents not being mentioned in-game. However, Toby responded with "Skip" to both questions, as he was offered to skip any questions he did not want to answer.[94]
An earlier version of Frisk's sprite.
  • In a joke thread on Starmen.net, Toby Fox posted early files from Undertale saying they were from an EarthBound hack called "UnderBound 2."[95]
    • It was said that Frisk was a young androgynous child who was the step-cousin of "Squeezo" from the non-existent EarthBound hack, "UnderBound."
    • Frisk was also shown to have black outlines with black hair and shoes compared to the lighter brown seen in the final version of the game. The artbook reveals this was changed because the sprite did not show up on the game's dark backgrounds that well.
    • It was also jokingly mentioned that Frisk's love interest was a female Cuban cigar,[96] concerning a question of whether the "love" in the game was romantic or like love of a fine cigar.
  • Frisk's striped clothing is most likely a reference to the "Mother" franchise, which was Toby Fox's major inspiration for Undertale. The main protagonists of each installment also wore striped clothing.

Misconceptions

Chara's Morality

Chara's morality is up for constanty debate within the Undertale community. There are those that argue they are pure evil while others argue they are complete good.

In actuality, Chara is neither. The reason for why Chara is evil in the genocide route is due to The Anomaly's determination and power influencing them causing them to absorb their LOVE[98]. LOVE represents "Level of Violence" that measures one's capacity to hurt[99]. In regards to this, Chara has absorbed large amount of violence which makes it simple to conclude why they become a demon upon being awakened.

On the other hand, Chara being pure good is not accurate either. Asriel outright states Chara wasn't really the greatest person[100]. Along with this they hated humanity[101].

Chara was simply a flawed human.

Higher LOVE = Higher Strength

This comes from the fact that one's health and stats increase when their LV goes up.

However, EXP and LV do not function how they do in a typical RPG.

EXP is an acronym for execution points[99] which is a way of quantifying the pain one inflicts on others[99]. When one kills someone, they gain EXP and when they gain enough EXP, their LOVE increases[99]. With LOVE standing for "Level of Violence" which measures the capcity of someone to hurt another[99]. The more one kills, the easier it becomes to distance themself[99]. The more they distance themself the less they will hurt and the more easily they can bring themself to hurt others[99].

In essence this means that LV is not a measure of how much stronger one has grown in terms of physical stats, but how more willing one is to hurt others.

On top of this, the reason monsters become more easy to kill and hurt the higher one's LV is due to monsters weakening when they don't want to fight[88] and one with more killing intent and crueller intentions will inflict more damage on them[88].

Thus higher LV does not actually increase one's strenght in the way it does in typical RPGs.

The Anomaly doesn't exist/The Anomaly is Frisk

This is an argument that queestions the existence of the Anomaly in Undertale, claiming anytime a character is talking about The Anomaly they're either referring to Frisk or that the character doesn't exist at all.

This is incorrect for one major scene that introduces the concept of the true reset, where Flowey outright notes they are the one last threat with the power to erase everything[102]. Flowey even differentiaties Frisk from the "YOU" figure he's referring too[103]. It also cannot be Chara for one important reason, when Chara appears in the genocide route[104], they note that the anomaly's power awakened them from death[105] noting that their "human soul", their "determination" was not theirs but instead the Anomaly's[106]. While some try to argue that Chara was speaking to Frisk during this cutscene, this does not make sense as Chara directly speaks again once the game is re-opened noting how the anomaly wants to go back to the world they've destroyed[107]. This directly is the same as when one re-opens the game after completing a true pacifist playthrough and has Flowey talk directly to them. Thus The Anomaly is a figure that completely exists within Undertale and is a representation of the player. There's even lines that allude to them, such as Flowey calling out the possibility of someone watching the genocide route[108].

In Deltarune the Anomaly has a choice of telling Sans it's great to see him again despite Kris and Sans never meeting before[109]. This would only make sense if The Anomaly had prior knowledge from another game, which would be Undertale.

Note: Official recorded losses for the battle records will be for battles where characters have a special message in regards to said death. Such as Sans noting how many times he's likely killed the Human in genocide route from the face they're making.
