Appearance

General Description: Undyne is an anthropomorphic fish monster. She has blue scales, a long red ponytail, red and blue fins on the sides of her head, and a pair of sharp, yellow, protruding teeth. She wears red eyeshadow and has an eyepatch over her left eye. Her eyes have black vertical pupils and yellow sclera. She has no nose.

Normal Outfit: A black tank top and blue jeans. Armor varying in light and dark shades of gray.

Alphys Date Outfit: A white turtleneck under a black leather jacket. A scarf around her neck. Pants. Lipstick. A light-colored eyepatch. Some of her hair is let down.

Undying Form: When she persists through Determination after her HP reduces to zero, her pupils turn white and her sclera turns black. She no longer has an eyepatch, and her newly revealed empty eye socket emits a flashing light in the shape of a spear. Her hair spikes at the ends like a trident and her fin rays become more rigid and pointy. She wears a new set of darker colored armor with souls or hearts on her chestplate and new white gloves with spikes protruding from their backside, accompanied by boots with pointed toes.

Alternate Forms: Her Undying form is considered an alternate form.

Personality

  • Passionate: Undyne is passionate about everything she does. She acts quickly on her ideas and is steadfast in her beliefs.
  • Fair and Honorable: Though she wants to defeat the protagonist, she tries to be fair and offers an explanation of how Green Mode works. Asgore taught her the value of pacifism, which is why she sees the protagonist as "a wimpy loser with a big heart." If the protagonist shows mercy, Undyne quickly defends them from Asgore.
  • Loves Helping Others: Undyne loves to help others and mentors Shyren and Papyrus in various skills.
  • Interests: Undyne dislikes puzzles, loves japes, enjoys playing the piano, collecting weaponry (primarily swords), and anime. She shares her love of anime with Alphys and regards human history as exciting and cool because Alphys told her anime is human history.
  • Tomboyish: Undyne appears to be a tomboy.
  • Determined: Out of all encountered monsters, Undyne possesses the most Determination. She melts before her death, implying her body cannot handle the amount of Determination she has.

Relationships

Alphys

Undyne and Alphys share a deep romantic love for one another. Undyne first met Alphys in the Garbage Dump while searching for swords, and she listened to Alphys's theories for hours about where the abyss led. The two quickly became close friends, with Alphys introducing her to anime at some point—though she told Undyne they were historical biopics about humans. They spend considerable time together, and Alphys uses the seagrass throughout Waterfall to prepare a special frozen treat for Undyne. The two also collaborated on creating some of Waterfall's puzzles.

At some point, Undyne fell in love with Alphys, drawn to her confidence in her interests and her work, though she struggled to express her feelings. She once called Alphys just to ask about the weather—despite the Underground having none—and frequently wrote letters confessing her emotions, only to lose her nerve upon delivery and start over.

Undyne quit her position as head of the Royal Guard in the Family Ending to become Alphys's lab assistant, where she reportedly caused numerous explosions.

In the True Pacifist Route, Undyne asks the protagonist to deliver a letter to Alphys, though she quickly changes her mind after changing into casual clothes. She later discovers the protagonist and Alphys in the dump, where Alphys—believing the letter was from the protagonist—is having a pretend date and confesses her love. This leads to a conversation where Alphys reveals everything to Undyne, who mostly accepts it. However, upon learning that anime is not real, Undyne becomes distraught. She asks the protagonist to confirm this, and if they do, she is devastated—though she resolves to put on a brave face for Alphys's sake. If the protagonist claims anime is real, she becomes elated and rambles about "gigantic swords" and "magical princesses." Undyne and Alphys nearly kiss after the Asgore fight is interrupted, but Toriel stops them and tells them not to do so in front of the protagonist. During the credits, Undyne is seen kissing Alphys on the cheek, laughing as Alphys faints.

Papyrus

Undyne regards Papyrus as a close friend. She admires his persistence but worries about his well-being, secretly hoping he never joins the Royal Guard because she believes he is too kind to ever hurt anyone. To steer him away from joining, she teaches him how to cook instead. Undyne sometimes enjoys teasing Papyrus, though she often forgets that he tends to take things literally. She becomes heartbroken and enraged if the protagonist kills Papyrus during a Neutral or Genocide Route.

The Human

Undyne initially harbors a strong disdain for the protagonist, believing they would be more useful dead than alive. If the protagonist spares her and offers her water in Hotland, she begrudgingly befriends them—provided they have earned no EXP. Although Papyrus tricks Undyne into befriending the protagonist, she genuinely comes to care for them by the end of their hangout. However, if the protagonist betrays her by killing monsters after their hangout, she ends up hating them even more than she would have without the friendship.

If the protagonist earned no EXP and befriended Undyne in a previous playthrough, she vaguely remembers them as a friend but brushes off the feeling before their battle.

Asgore

Though Asgore is her boss, Undyne views him as a friend and knows his preferred type of tea. When she was younger, Undyne challenged Asgore to a fight but could not land a single blow on him. She felt humiliated because he refused to fight back, only dodging her attacks. Asgore then offered to train her and eventually promoted her to captain of the Royal Guard.

After Toriel refuses to "be friends again" with Asgore in the True Pacifist Route, Undyne expresses sympathy for him.

Toriel

Undyne first meets Toriel at the end of the Pacifist route. The two treat each other warmly and immediately find common ground. In Neutral route endings involving Toriel, their relationship can be positive or negative. If the protagonist killed monsters, Undyne rejects Toriel's new policy on humans and overthrows her, sending her back to the Ruins. If no monsters were killed, Undyne supports her policy and works at Toriel's new school, stating that she backs her.

Napstablook

Napstablook and Undyne live in the same neighborhood, and Napstablook is intimidated by her. Despite this, Undyne tries to be a good neighbor and expresses concern about them being alone after their cousin left, urging the protagonist to be kind to them.

Mettaton

Undyne does not know that Mettaton is Napstablook's cousin. She holds a general distaste for him and does not enjoy his show. Nevertheless, she acknowledges that she "admires his lifestyle.

Shyren

Undyne used to give piano lessons to Shyren, but Shyren stopped coming one day—presumably after her sister fell down.

Monster Kid

Undyne appears to care deeply for Monster Kid's safety. This is evident when she rescues them after they fall off a cliff. The concern becomes even more pronounced in the Genocide Route, where Undyne takes a fatal blow meant for Monster Kid, protecting them at the cost of her own life.

Powers and Techniques

All previous powers and abilities to a greater extent

Equipment

Spears

Other

Standard Tactics: Undyne will utilize her spears in combat for various purposes. Including spawning them underneath the opponent[34] to shower them in spears[35]. Though Undyne is also an honorable warrior. She outright gives the human a spear to block her attacks[36]. Even in her Undying state when fighting a genocidal maniac she seems to keep her warrior's code[37].

Weaknesses

Note

  • Despite Undyne having determination considering what it does to her body and how monsters are naturally not supposed to contain much determination it is very unlikely she has many of the other abilities other determination users have even if there isn't another user with greater determination. A primary example is that she is not aware of resets like other determination users are.

Explanations

Monster Check Stats

Monster's check stats are quite dubious for a couple of reasons:

On top of these, genocide route has the check stats differ too with confusing changes, while the human's killing intent is a reason behind this, some characters have their defense stats raise such as Papyrus'. There's also inconsistencies even in these routes, for example The Human at a level 3 killing intent one-shots Toriel[39] yet The Human at level 13 can still only chip damage Asgore[40].

It should also be noted, the argument that Toriel sent Asgore flying with her fire, has an issue it was an off guard hit[41] which it has been shown off-guard/betrayal kills can one-shot monsters as they lowered their guard[42].

Magic vs. Physicality

Monsters are mostly made of magic while human beings are mostly made of water[5] making humans with their physical forms far stronger then them[5]. However humans have lost the ability to use magic by proxy[5].

Monsters bodies being made of magic has their body physically attuned to their SOUL[9]. Due to this, monsters that don't want to fight have their defenses weaken[9] and one with more killing intent and crueller intentions will inflict more damage on them[9]. This is due to a monsters SOUL being made of love, hope, and compassion[43].

Monsters bodies being made of magic also makes it where they do not possess enough physical matter to take concentrations of determination[44].

In the Undertale 10th Anniversary Livestream Gerson reveals that humanity once had magic too but creating the barrier that separated humans and monsters caused them to use up all their magic[45].
