W. D. Gaster

Undertale/W. D. Gaster

W. D. Gaster was the royal scientist before Alphys, responsible for creating the CORE. Gaster's Followers relay various explanations as to what happened to Gaster. One iteration says that he "fell into his creation," another says that "his experiments went wrong," and the last one says he "shattered across time and space." Characters such as the River Person and Gaster's Followers hint at his existence. Similar to Sans and Papyrus, he speaks in a typeface different from the other characters.

Stated by one of his followers that it took Asgore a long time to find a replacement due to how smart Gaster was[17], another follower notes Gaster's brilliance was irreplaceable[18] with this he should then be far more intelligent then Alphys. Hacked into the CORE, even overriding Mettaton's hacking in the process[19], could figured out a highly complicated math problem in a couple of seconds, correctly guessed the number of flies in a jar with a glance, and perfectly guessed the number of n’s in Mettaton’s name in a situation where the number of n’s was rapidly growing[20], while it was all being asked in a row. Now that he's shattered across space-time he likely has higher intelligence then even before)

Weaknesses

Explanations

W. D. Gaster's Form is confirmed in the Tarot Cards

Toby has noted the tarot cards are non-canon. However it's been a consistent thing that the form fo mysteryman is removed afterwards in any Undertale merch. Though this does not confirm this is indeed Gaster as Toby has already noted none of the merch is canon.

Higher LOVE = Higher Strength

This comes from the fact that one's health and stats increase when their LV goes up.

However, EXP and LV do not function how they do in a typical RPG.

EXP is an acronym for execution points[41] which is a way of quantifying the pain one inflicts on others[41]. When one kills someone, they gain EXP and when they gain enough EXP, their LOVE increases[41]. With LOVE standing for "Level of Violence" which measures the capcity of someone to hurt another[41]. The more one kills, the easier it becomes to distance themself[41]. The more they distance themself the less they will hurt and the more easily they can bring themself to hurt others[41].

In essence this means that LV is not a measure of how much stronger one has grown in terms of physical stats, but how more willing one is to hurt others.

On top of this, the reason monsters become more easy to kill and hurt the higher one's LV is due to monsters weakening when they don't want to fight[31] and one with more killing intent and crueller intentions will inflict more damage on them[31].

Thus higher LV does not actually increase one's strenght in the way it does in typical RPGs.

  40. Because they are made of magic, monsters’ bodies are attuned to their SOUL.
If a monster doesn’t want to fight, its defenses will weaken.
And the crueler the intentions of our enemies, the more their attacks will hurt us.
