Underground

Background
The setting of the vast majority of Undertale, the Underground is a large region underneath the Surface of the Earth, which houses the kingdom of Monsters. The exit from the Underground is blocked by the Barrier, which was placed by the Humans ages ago. Humans access it, the protagonist included, by way of a hole in Mount Ebott. It is ruled by King Asgore, and formerly by his ex-wife as well, Toriel. Spanning several different climates, the Underground features the Ruins, the cold and wintery Snowdin, the wet and cavernous Waterfall, the blistery and barren Hotland, the technologically advanced CORE, and the Capital.
History
After the Humans defeated the Monsters in The War, the losing faction was banished into the Underground. A Barrier was erected to prevent the insiders from leaving, though outsiders could still freely enter. The monsters eventually accepted their loss and lived normal lives throughout the Underground.
One day, a human named Chara walked to Mt. Ebott and unfortunately tripped on a vine, causing them to fall into a pit and enter the Underground. Chara was discovered by Asriel, the son of Asgore and Toriel, and was adopted into their family. However, the human one day grew ill and eventually died from the illness, but wished to see the flowers in their home village. After Chara had died, Asriel absorbed their SOUL, becoming a powerful entity that was able to cross the Barrier, and picked up their corpse and carried it out of the Underground. However, the humans from the outside world attacked Asriel, under the assumption that he killed Chara, forcing him to return to the Underground with Chara's corpse where he succumbed to his wounds.
Since then, Asgore became vengeful for his son and plotted to escape the Underground and declare another war against humans. He declared all humans who fall into the Underground be killed and their SOULs collected; with seven human SOULs, the Barrier could be shattered. However, the brutality of this decision disgusted Toriel enough that she relinquished her position as queen as well as her marriage to Asgore.
Asgore continued to rule the land on his own while Toriel exiled herself into the Ruins. Over time, six more humans fell into the Underground, all of which Toriel tried to shelter and care for. However, they all eventually left the Ruins and were eventually killed, their SOULs collected by Asgore.
An eighth human, the protagonist, had then fallen into the Underground. Unlike the predecessors, the protagonist's Determination managed to carry them through many obstacles the Underground had presented, even managing to befriend or make an enemy out of many monsters. Eventually, the protagonist manages to reach Asgore, where he stands before the Barrier. One of few events occur depending on the protagonist's actions:
- On the Neutral Route, the protagonist and Asgore battle. The latter is defeated, after which Flowey intervenes and absorbs the six human SOULs. The protagonist defeats Flowey and is somehow transported outside the Barrier after the event, where they leave the Underground. Sans then calls the protagonist and tells them the fate of the Underground, which is either peaceful or grim depending on who was killed.
- On the True Pacifist Route, Asgore is stopped by Toriel and all of the protagonist's friends but are then ambushed by Flowey, who proceeds to absorb the six human SOULs as well as the SOULs of all the monsters in the Underground, reverting to his true form, Asriel. However, with all the SOULs Asriel gains compassion and ultimately loses the will to fight, instead of using their power to shatter the Barrier. Having returned the SOULs, Asriel leaves knowing that he will revert to Flowey and begs the protagonist to forget him, while the monsters are free to leave the Underground and live peaceful lives on the surface.
- In the Genocide Route, certain monsters try to stop the protagonist's murderous rampage while Alphys leads the evacuation. Upon reaching Asgore, the protagonist instantly defeats him with one blow and proceeds to destroy Flowey mercilessly. It is then revealed that the protagonist is under the complete control of Chara, revealing their true sinister nature, and proceeds to use the protagonist to leave the Underground and destroy the world.

Flowey was injected with determination by Alphys[149], Flowey X's determination overrides even the human's[150], and Asriel Dreemurr is fighting for control of the timeline against a human at peak determination[151]. Giving him, Standard Determination, Filled With Determination, Injected Determination, & Unnatural Determination:
These are the natural applications of determination users that they pertain even when one with greater determination exists.
- Sheer Will (Determination is the extraction from the human SOULs that give them the strength to persist after death, the will to keep living, the resolve to change fate[152] The act of sparing in Undertale is defined as an aura of peaceful determination exuding from one's body and causing any enemy questioning the desire to fight to give up though this can only be done after an enemy is fully convinced[153])
- Existence Continuity
- Reset Awareness: Determination users can remember resets[154].
- Limited Nullification
- Power Nullification: A determination user can have their desires override other determination users desires for the world making them unable to do things like SAVE[155]. However, this is only in reference to abilities that require a strong desire over the world to work.
These are determination users filled with determination, having the greatest amount compared to anyone else[156] being at their strongest mentally and physically during this[157], where their desires for the world override other determination users[155].
- Sheer Will
- Reality Warping (Determination is described as the power to re-shape the world purely by their own determination and the ability to play God[155]. Flowey attempting to take his own life[158] instead wanted to live and[159] due to this he kept reviving back to his previous "save point"[160])
- Time Travel & Timeline Hopping (Travels back to a specific point in time while hopping through timelines[161])
- Save and Load
- Memory Retention & Checkpoint-Based: Determination users have the ability to "SAVE"[155], where they keep full memories of the previous encounters they've had.
- Resurrection
- Self-Resurrection
- Subjective Reality & Creation (SAVE points are the manifestation of one's own determination[164]. The Human can create “last dream” to heal themself[165])
- Possible Fate Manipulation (Determination gives the user the ability to change fate itself, and events to allow them to live even outside of merely time traveling. Examples include Papyrus' special attack suddenly taken over by the dog, and Papyrus states that if special attack was used the human would've of died, Undyne's failure to capture The Human on multiple occasions due to Monster Kid bothering her or she uses random tactics such as letting a bridge's fall kill the human and not check to see if they died herself, and Napstablook showing up out of nowhere to save The Human during Mad Dummy)
- Statistics Amplification (The Human used determination to continuously amplify themselves to have damage reduced from attacks[166])
- Users of this level of Determination can perform a True Reset which can do the following[167]:
- Reality Warping (The True Reset is a power allowing one to set everything back to a blank and neutral state where no one remembers anything even characters that can remember regular resets[168])
- Erasure
- Time Manipulation (The true reset rips everyone from the timeline and sends them back before any of the events of Undertale ever happened[173])
- Information Manipulation & Data Manipulation (A true reset thoroughly erases all information in one’s file, resetting it back to 0. Chara with the true reset set a permanent flag that cannot be removed without non-canon hacking[174])
- Reality Warping (The True Reset is a power allowing one to set everything back to a blank and neutral state where no one remembers anything even characters that can remember regular resets[168])
These are determination users that were injected with Determination during Alphys' true lab entries[175]
These are determination users that have gotten their determination through unnatural means, such as Flowey absorbing the six human SOULs[180], or absorbing the entire Underground to regain his form as Asriel Dreemurr
- Sheer Will
- Time Travel & Timeline Hopping (Users with a greater amount of determination can use this to save and load through all existing timelines[181])
- Limited Reality Seperation (Reality Separation; Exist outside of reality as shown in the scene where Flowey X creates a SAVE File that the human is outside of within his SAVE File is the human’s original SAVE File which Flowey X comes out of[182])
- Erasure
- Space-Time Erasure (3+1-D): Erased all inhabitants of the current timeline and a save file[183].
- Reality Warping (Flowey X re-shaped the world in his own image[184])
- Information Manipulation & Fate Manipulation (Flowey X re-wrote the history of the war between monsters and humans[185])
Other
Weaknesses: The entire civilization is currently locked in the Underground by the Barrier, with only certain individuals being able to cross it by absorbing the Human SOULs though depending on the ending this weakness is removed. All monsters are weak to an attack with killing intent behind it and if a monster doesn't want to fight, they are weakened greatly[186]. The Human SOULs are still conscious to a degree and can break out of the control of whoever they absorbed in certain situations, however in cases like Asriel this weakness doesn't seem to apply. Their King, Asgore, is naturally depressed and will hold back against an opponent if he feels he's wronged them (this usually refers to human children). This overall harpens the morale of the Underground. If many of the underground members are killed, this will also lower their morale significantly making them naturally more pessimistic.

Explanations
Monster Check Stats
Monster's check stats are quite dubious for a couple of reasons:
- Monsters like Glyde give off the implication that monsters are the ones listing their statistics.
- Mad Dummy has a defense stat listed of -40 but notes because they're a ghost physical attacks will fail. One could say the -40 comes from the fact that the dummy's body is that weak, however, the regular Dummy's check stats just has their DEF as 0, there's really no reason why the Mad Dummy should have far lower DEF stats especially during a pacifist route.
- Characters like Napstablook have a defense stat listed but you actually aren't lowering his HP he was just lowering it for you to be nice.
- Toriel's stats are listed at 80 ATK and 80 DEF, the same as Asgore's stats. Yet in one of the endings Unydne with her strength as stated by Sans literally threw Toriel out of the castle. Despite Undyne's stats being 7 ATK and 0 DEF. This would also imply characters like Papyrus are stronger then her as he has an 8 ATK and 2 DEF, and while she does admit Papyrus is pretty tough, it's never really implied to be that Papyrus is stronger then Undyne. Royal Guard members are also shown to have higher stats then her through this logic.
- Undyne the Undying has stats of 99 ATK and 99 DEF yet due to Mettaton's Invulnerable Body, they have a defense stat of 999.
On top of these, genocide route has the check stats differ too with confusing changes, while the human's killing intent is a reason behind this, some characters have their defense stats raise such as Papyrus'. There's also inconsistencies even in these routes, for example The Human at a level 3 killing intent one-shots Toriel[187] yet The Human at level 13 can still only chip damage Asgore[188].
It should also be noted, the argument that Toriel sent Asgore flying with her fire, has an issue it was an off guard hit[189] which it has been shown off-guard/betrayal kills can one-shot monsters as they lowered their guard[190].
Magic vs. Physicality
Monsters are mostly made of magic while human beings are mostly made of water[4] making humans with their physical forms far stronger then them[4]. However humans have lost the ability to use magic by proxy[4].
Monsters bodies being made of magic has their body physically attuned to their SOUL[15]. Due to this, monsters that don't want to fight have their defenses weaken[15] and one with more killing intent and crueller intentions will inflict more damage on them[15]. This is due to a monsters SOUL being made of love, hope, and compassion[191].
Monsters bodies being made of magic also makes it where they do not possess enough physical matter to take concentrations of determination[192].
In the Undertale 10th Anniversary Livestream Gerson reveals that humanity once had magic too but creating the barrier that separated humans and monsters caused them to use up all their magic[193].
Misconceptions
Higher LOVE = Higher Strength
This comes from the fact that one's health and stats increase when their LV goes up.
However, EXP and LV do not function how they do in a typical RPG.
EXP is an acronym for execution points[194] which is a way of quantifying the pain one inflicts on others[194]. When one kills someone, they gain EXP and when they gain enough EXP, their LOVE increases[194]. With LOVE standing for "Level of Violence" which measures the capcity of someone to hurt another[194]. The more one kills, the easier it becomes to distance themself[194]. The more they distance themself the less they will hurt and the more easily they can bring themself to hurt others[194].
In essence this means that LV is not a measure of how much stronger one has grown in terms of physical stats, but how more willing one is to hurt others.
On top of this, the reason monsters become more easy to kill and hurt the higher one's LV is due to monsters weakening when they don't want to fight[15] and one with more killing intent and crueller intentions will inflict more damage on them[15].
Thus higher LV does not actually increase one's strenght in the way it does in typical RPGs.
Codex Statistics Questions
- Q: Shouldn't the entirety of the world of Undertale constitute the multiverse?
- A: This looks fine on paper but has several issues, for one, the world of Undertale is actually never defined as the entirety of the multiverse at any point in the game. Asriel literally notes he doesn't care about destroying this world anymore and then proceeds to note that after he defeats Frisk and gains total control over the timeline. The statement clearly likens the world to the timeline. Sans' "you'll keep consuming timelines" statement is also referring to the fact that everytime you finish a route you restart and do another route, so technically yes you are "consuming timelines" but in the way one finishes routes in a video game, which is one by one. For the part that says "along with this, there can also be more than one file deleted after Chara destroys the world", there is no proof of being alternate game files or such, and there's no direct confirmation what they even do for the game. Initially from what Toby said, he wanted to make it where Chara would delete the game Undertale in its entirety so it is likely a leftover from that, which has nothing to do with number of timelines. There's also argument that a reset in Undertale doesn't leave a timeline behind but makes it disappear or merge with the new one too, as characters will have weird deja vus from past resets on previous scenes done[195].
- Q: Shouldn't Asriel be 2-C for threatening to purge the timeline?
- A: Asriel must defeat the human in order to gain control over the timeline[196], and only then will he reduce all of their progress to 0[197]. Asriel does not enter his God of Hyper Death form until the point where it is stated that "The whole world is ending"[198], which reinforces the idea that, when he used the Hyper Goner, he did not destroy the timeline. This is further supported by the fact that the Human is capable of dodging the attack[199], and even Napstablook was able to witness it from inside his own house[200]. Taken together, these details suggest that the Hyper Goner, by itself, did not destroy the timeline. Rather, the actual process of ending the world and obtaining complete control over it occurs afterward, this takes into account that Asriel wanted the world and the Human's friends to forget about them so that it would lose control of the timeline[201]. In fact, the point is for the human to help them recover their memories, since Frisk loses their ability to move their body or use their save file; that's why it's mentioned that saving the game is impossible[202].

I've done it.
Using the blueprints, I've extracted it from the human SOULs.
I believe this is what gives their SOULs the strength to persist after death.
The will to keep living... The resolve to change fate.
Let's call this power...
"Determination."" - ↑ Undertale Demo Manual

- ↑ 155.0 155.1 155.2 155.3 Undertale: Flowey on Saving Toriel after restarting your save file "Clever. Verrrryyy clever.
You think you're really smart, don't you?
In this world, it's kill or be killed.
So you were able to play by your own rules.
You spared the life of a single person.
Hee hee hee...
But don't act so cocky.
I know what you did.
You murdered her.
And then you went back, because you regretted it.
Ha ha ha ha...
You naive idiot.
Do you think you are the only one with that power?
The power to reshape the world...
Purely by your own determination.
The ability to play God!
The ability to "SAVE."
I thought I was the only one with that power. But...
I can't SAVE anymore.
Apparently YOUR desires for this world override MINE.
Well well.
Enjoy that power while you can.
I'll be watching." - ↑ Undertale Ruins First Save Point "The shadow of the ruins looms above, filling you with determination. HP fully restored."

- ↑ Because they are made of magic, monsters’ bodies are attuned to their SOUL.
If a monster doesn’t want to fight, its defenses will weaken.
And the crueler the intentions of our enemies, the more their attacks will hurt us.
Therefore, if a being with a powerful SOUL struck with the desire to kill...
