Background

Yako is a supernatural haunting the Kamome Academy. Initially, she was an inari statue at a temple gate coming to life. It is assumed the temple is near Misaki's schoolhouse, as he went to pray every day for his students' well-being. Yako was known to his students as a girl's ghost who haunted the temple and frequently scared them. After an encounter, Yako started studying under Misaki. At first, she recounted in her workbook that she found more joy in continuing causing trouble with other students. But her teacher was patient and took care of her, continuing to correct her behavior and her grammar. Yako slowly grew fond of him as time passed, developing a crush on him. Misaki later gifted Yako the hair shears he used, something that she treasured and kept safe in the shrine. After Misaki passed after an accident at the staircase, Yako heard of the news but didn't understand the concept of death, and stayed waiting for him to return. As time passed, she finally understood and closed her heart to others, believing that Misaki was the only good human. When she becomes the School Mystery Number 2, it is inferred the School Mystery was named after the late teacher.

• In Afterschool boy Hanako-kun she fell in love with Nene's homeroom teacher, Nagisa, who looks similar to Misaki.
• In the pilot chapters, her fox form is mainly unchanged, aside from her face. This change happened twice within her appearances in Chapters 2 and 3 of the pilot. Her face in Chapter 3 closely resembles the one she got in serialized series.
