Background

Mariya was a young woman who was enlisted into the Strider training program. An exceptional and deadly fighter, Mariya was the first female Strider to ever reach the A Rank. Despite this, Mariya had a very kind and loving heart, shown in how she took Hiryu in as her little brother.

One day, however, Mariya was seemingly driven mad and slaughtered ten Striders. Because of her status as an A Rank Strider, most lower-ranking Striders were forbidden from seeking her out, as they would most certainly be killed. Instead, Hiryu was hand-picked to deal with her.

Hesitant to take on the woman he saw as his older sister, Hiryu desperately tried to speak to her out of her madness. Unfortunately, no matter what Hiryu said, her merciless nature never ceased. At the climax of the fight, Hiryu was forced to pierce her torso with his Cypher.

Mariya burst into tears once she realized what she had done, before releasing her final breath and passing away. Hiryu, extremely shaken by her death at his hands, sought death; taking on extremely dangerous missions that he hoped would ensure he died in combat. Unfortunately for Hiryu, death never faced him.

Few years later, after a brief struggle with his friend Cain, who was also seemingly driven insane, Hiryu discovered a chip in Cain’s neck. This chip, created by the ZAIN Project, had been controlling Cain’s mind and making him a heartless murderer.

Hiryu realized that this chip was the cause of Mariya’s madness as well, all because of the ZAIN Project’s devious goals. Enraged by this revelation, Hiryu and Cain set out to end the ZAIN Project once and for all; avenging Mariya.
