Different Canons Original Universe - Star Wars Expanded Universe - Disney Star Wars
For my ally is the Force, and a powerful ally it is. Life creates it, makes it grow. Its energy surrounds us and binds us. Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter. You must feel the Force around you; here, between you, me, the tree, the rock, everywhere, yes. Even between the land and the ship
All energy from the Living Force, from all things that have ever lived, feeds into the cosmic Force, binding everything and communicating to us through the midi-chlorians. Because of this, I can speak to you now.
~ The spirit of Qui-Gon Jinn, communing with Yoda

Introduction

Force Sensitive also known as Force-users, Force wielders, or Force Adepts, were sentient or non-sentient lifeforms that possessed a strong connection to the mystical energy field known as the Force. Though the term applied to anyone who was sensitive to the spiritual energy, those who harnessed powers given by the dark side of the Force were known as dark side adepts. The progeny of Force-sensitives could inherit their progenitor's power, as was the case in the Skywalker family. Anakin Skywalker, the Chosen One, passed his strength to his children, the twins Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa, who, in turn, passed it to her son Ben Solo.

Throughout galactic history various religious orders have trained Force-sensitives to control their abilities, such as the Jedi Order and the Sith.

  35. The Force is a mysterious energy field created by life that binds the galaxy together. Harnessing the power of the Force gives the Jedi, the Sith, and others sensitive to this spiritual energy extraordinary abilities, such as levitating objects, tricking minds, and seeing things before they happen. While the Force can grant users powerful abilities, it also directs their actions. And it has a will of its own, which both scholars and mystics have spent millennia seeking to understand.
