Background

Shijima Mei was a 3rd-year high schooler attending Kamome Academy before she passed away due to an unknown illness. While attending school, she was shown to have an aptitude for drawing and painting, amassing encouragement by her parents. Her last project was to paint a tower, to which she drew a tall Atelier tower on her sketchpad while being situated in a hospital bed. Already understanding that she was unable to live much longer, she decided to envision that a healthier version of her would live inside the tower, continuing her painting after her legacy. Enduring through the pitiful remarks, she took solace in the comfort of her fictional version. Because of that, she still retained her confident, positive, and self-reliant nature. Several of her traits were then passed down to the supernatural, Shijima Mei (also known as No.4 of the School Mysteries), who was simply a proxy or replication of her human version. However, she took full responsibility for granting Mei's wish before the rumors spread. Because she couldn't do anything against the rumors, she lost hope in trying to make fiction into reality; therefore falling into a sense of hopelessness and distraught.

Shijima Mei appears at the end of the arc, being revealed by Tsukasa as a present for Mitsuba. She is seen crying and cowering under a table in fear.

Shijima Mei was first noticed by Yashiro Nene after cleaning the pool. She appears to be drawing flowers in her sketchbook behind the fence. Shijima then disappears from sight. In the tower, she tells both Kou and Nene to kill Mitsuba and Amane to escape. After Nene was taken by Hanako and imprisoned, Shijima checks up on Nene before getting threatened to make a deal with her. This eventually leads to Tsukasa showing up and granting her wish. He grants her wish to kill herself, the original, before she finishes or submits the tower that will create her. It fails because of Nene's inference with Mei.

Shijima Mei was originally tied up by Kou before escaping and doing the same to him. She participates in the plan with Mitsuba, Kou, and Nene to escape the fake world before its finished. She tells Nene to go to No.1 for information that may help with her short lifespan, in addition to offering her sketchpad with her yorishiro to undo the fake world. She was seen talking to Tsukasa after the fake world is destroyed, and the two discuss in the art room about the payment for the wish she made.

She comes off as cheerful at first while perviding the perfect conditions for everyone to live in said world forever. However, she has no problem with killing or threatening to harm other people. When Tsukasa, Mitsuba, and Natsuhiko needed her help with drawing a tea set to replace the broken one Sakara Nanamine owned. After an hour of everyone trying to tell Shijima Mei the design they wanted, they stated that the first design was the best. After hearing that, she made an elephant supernatural to harm everyon in the boundary. Shijima Mei made Hanako and Mitsuba the main characters of the story. When asked if they can leave, Shijima Mei supported their escape but only on one condition. They would need to kill Mitsuba and Hanako in order to escape the story. She even makes weapons specifically made to kill Hanako and Mitsuba while pushing them over and over to kill them. Later in the story, she tries to kill her true self to protect her from the rumors and to erase herself. When she fails, she helps Mei Shijima go back to her reality while allowing everyone to escape her fictional world. She helps Nene, Kou, and Mitsuba fight Hanak in order to leave the fictional world and before Nene destroys her Yorishiro, she promised Nene to help her with her issue)

Shijima Mei was able to easily overpower Kou Minamoto in combat while she was pinned to a wall. After Nene was transported to another part of Shijima Mei's boundary, she states that the other world will be destroyed soon after. She was also perfectly fine after her boundary, which is a perfect copy of reality, got destroyed after Nene Yashrio destroyed her Yorishiro), Passive Law Manipulation and Power Nullification (All School Wonders are able to freely control any of the rules of the verse while they are in their boundary. In said boundaries, they can completely remove the laws of physics like gravity, Life and Death, the rules of the Near Shore and Far Shore and many more. This can be best seen when Mitsuba wanted to become a human in his boundary. This version of Mitsuba is shown to be a pure apparition which was never alive in the living world to begin with, thus, making it impossible to become human in both the living world and the world of the dead. Mitsuba was later seen becoming a human in a boundary despite it being impossible. Should scale to Hanako, who nullified Kou's abilities with a seal. While in a boundary, A School Wonder is able to passively nullify a person's powers while in a boundary with the only way to get them back is to ask the School Wonder permission. This is best seen when Hanako states that a boundary can negate your powers entirely. This can be best seen with Shijima Mei. She was able to nullify everyone's powers while they were in her boundary. Nene can turn into a fish when she gets wet and she wasn't able to use this ability while in Shijima Mei's Boundary. She also took away Mitsuba and Hanako's powers for a long time while they were in her boundary. Even after Hanako Resisted the affects of her law manipulation and power nullification, she was able to nullify Hanako's abilities), Perspective Manipulation (Should Scale to the other School Wonders, who are able to create the rules and reality of their boundaries from nothing. It was stated by Shijima Mei that you can create the rules of the boundary from your strong emotions and desires), Intangible Attacks (Shijima Mei created a weapon that she says can cut through anything that it toughes. Her knife is able to cut through the rumors that were spread about her and is heavily implied to be able to be able to destroy souls as it was made to kill supernaturals as well), Summoning (Is able to summon her subjects at any time at will. She is able to make an unlimited amount of them as well at any moment in time) Pocket Reality Manipulation and Personal Domain (Every School Wonder is has a pocket dimension named a "Boundary". These Boudaries are the personal domain of the School Wonder who owns it and is where their Yorishiro resides. These boundaries cannot be destroyed unless the yorishiro is destroyed and they don't get erased forever as they comeback right after it's destroyed. The School Wonder is able to make any rule that they want within their Boundary and that is where they are at their strongest), Invulnerability (Every School Wonder has a Yorishiro within the deepest part of the boundary. A Yorishiro is the most precious possession of a School Wonder and acts as a battery that provides the Wonder with their power. It protects the Wonder from all damage and death with it's still intact while also protecting them from status ailments), BFR (Shijima Mei was able to suck everyone the entire world into her boundary and made them into fiction. Sakura Nanamine states that every one was trapped inside of Shijima Mei's paintings and were not able to escape unless she wants you to leave. This world is removed from reality entirely due to being apart of Shijima Mei's boundary and the people who get sent there are not able to interact with the real world), Null Existence (Type 3. When a supernatural is destroyed completely, their rumor gets erased and will not exist in the conventional sense. School Wonders will become non existent if their Yorishiro is destroyed as their entire existence gets destroyed and they are able to stay alive in said state. This is best seen when the Confession Tree was destroyed and Hanako stated that they wanted to make a new rumor for them as the previous one was destroyed. Shijima Mei's true self was able to completely ignore the rumors of the entire school even though most supernaturals can't go against the rumors. Hanako was able to adapt to Teru Minamoto's attacks in their fight. Due to being an exorcist, Teru's powers are able to negate the resistances of the supernatural in order to one shot them. It instantly destroys their rumor and can even affect characters that don't exist. Hanako was able to survive the attacks from Teru and didn't get one shot and they were doing less and less damage as the fight goes on), Absorption and Essence Manipulation (Should scale to the other School Wonders who are able to take the essence of other characters and absorb them to make themselves or others more powerful. Yugi Tsukasa was able to absorb the power of the 3rd Wonder's power after he defeated them. He then gave the power to Mitsuba to become one of the 7 Wonders), Forcefield Creation (Should scale to Hanako, who was able to give Nene Yashiro a protection charm that shields her from any damage), Resistance Negation (The 7 Wonders are able to negate the resistances of exorcists and supernaturals alike. Shijima Mei was able to negate the powers of Hanako, Teru and Kou, whose powers are able to persist in a boundary even though they passively nullify everyone's powers. Hanako was able to resist Shijima Mei's power nullification after a time and she was able to restrict his ability to command his Haku-Joudai completely), Omnipresence (Type 3. Shijima Mei exists everywhere in her boundary, which includes the many stories that she made. This can be best seen when Nene and Hanako were trying to escape Shijima Mei's boundary and she appeared everywhere that the two went. Shortly after this, Shijima Mei states that since they are in her world now, she will be everwhere they are and she will always be able to see what they are doing), Acausality Negation (Type 3. Shijima Mei can interact with other supernaturals, who exist outside of space and time due to living in a boundary. She was also able to negate every supernatural's Acausality), Subjective Reality and Reality Warping (Every School Wonder is able to freely manipulate the reality in their boundary. Tsukasa specifically states that School Wonders are able to do whatever they want in their boundaries, even if they break the laws of reality. Shijima Mei has an ability to draw a picture and then bring the picture back to life. This is best seen when she drew a picture of multiple weapons for Nene and Kou to use to kill Hanako and Mitsuba. She was then able to pull the weapons out of the paper and use them right afterwards. She was also able to make an elephant supernatural after Tsukasa, Natsuhiko, and Mitsuba angered her. The elephant came out of the picture and took form. Shijima Mei was also able to make an entire world based oh Hanako and Mitsuba's wishes in which she completely controls. She also was able to make everyone in the series into fiction and controlling them with in her boundary), Plot Manipulation (Shijima Mei was able to control the entire plot of the story inside of her boundary. She was able to make Mitsuba and Hanako into humans and were able to erase characters from the plot for a time. Aoi and Akane were destroyed with in Shijima Mei's story and were not able to come back until she redrew them. Shijima Mei is also able to make anyone the main character but the story can't end or be destoryed until the main character dies in said story. She did this with Hanako and Mitsuba by binding the plot to their lives. She explans that the plot of the story hinges on the main characters and without it, the story can no longer exist. She tasked Nene and Kou to kill the two if they wanted to leave as if they don't, they won't be able to leave her fictional world), Abstract Existence Negation (When Shijima Mei trapped everyone in her fictional story, she was able to negate every supernatural's existence as an abstract being and made them visable to normal people. This is best seen when she turned the supernaturals, named Mokke, into pets to be sold to normal people around the world. Regular humans are shown to be interacting with these supernaturals. She was also able to do this to Yako, who is one of the former 7 Wonders. She can be shown in a social media post where she is married to a normal human)

Resistance to Conceptual Manipulation (Due to being a School Wonder, Shijima Mei doesn't need rumors in order to exist and he is not affected by his rumor changing. Scales to Hanako who was able to resist his rumors completely. Hanako's rumor says that he was a girl who grants wishes with an orb. Hanako turned out to be a boy who doesn't grant wishes with an orb despite his rumors saying so. Mei Shijima was also able to reject her rumors causally in a conversation with Nene Yashiro), Regeneration Negation and Irreversible Damage (Shijima Mei, along with the other supernaturals, is able to regenerate after the severance, which is supposed to completely stop you from regenerating back), Electricity Manipulation (Should scale to Tsuchigomori and Hanako, who were completely unaffected by the electricity coming from Teru's weapon. The lightning coming from his weapon is able to nullify a supernatural's abilities and negate their regeneration completely), Holy Manipulation and Purification (Every exorcist's abilities have holy properties that is counteracts evil supernaturals in order to completely destroy them. Shijima Mei was able to survive after getting hit with one of Kou's attacks), Soul Manipulation (Was fine after getting hit with an attack from an exorcist. Should scale to Hanako, who was able to take multiple soul destruction attacks that negate your resistance to soul based attacks), Resistance Negation (Shijima Mei was able to take away Hanako's restistance to the rules of a boundary by nullifying his abilities. She was also able to take away Nene's power to turn into a fish when getting wet even though she had her abilities in the Misaki Stairs), Curse Manipulation (Should scale to the other School Wonders, who are able to resist curses that are put on them. This can be best seen when Hanako was able to resist the Mermaid's Curse. This curse turns the character into a fish like creature and forces them to serve the Mermaid for all of eternity. When Nene Yashiro was turned into a fish, Hanako stated that he'd share the curse with Nene in order to make her life as normal as possible. He also states, that whenever you get wet when cursed, you'd turn into a fish instantly. We see that Hanako gets wet multiple times and he has been shown to be perfectly fine), Power Nullification (Should be comparable to the other School Wonders, who are able to use their abilities in other boundaries. Tsukasa was able to use his power in the Fourth Wonder's boundary, which passively nullifies abilities. This can be best seen when Nene Yashiro's powers to become a fish was gone after going into Shijima Mei's boundary), Observation (Due to being a School Wonder, Shijima Mei's true self is able to resist his rumors and isn't bound to them. Rumors shape reality in the universe. Everyone in the verse is able to use or manipulate rumors, even normal people. Most supernaturals rely on them in order to exist in the human world and they can't normally go against them. They can manipulate the truth of the world and can rewrite history itself. Shijima Mei's rumor detailed that she would die soon by killing herself after her parents rejected her love of art. It was shown that she thinks rumors are meaningless while casually resisting them), Fear and Perception Manipulation (Scales to Hanako, who was fine in the 3rd Wonder's Boundary. The Third Wonder's boundary, The Hell of Mirrors, shows the fear and wickedness in a person's mind and manifests said fears into real life. It was stated that if a person has a lot of guilt and fear in their hearts, the boundary will become stronger. Hanako has been shown to have lots of guilt and regrets and it was stated if he were to go in there, everyone would instantly die. However, he was still unaffected by the boundary), Law Manipulation and Reality Warping (Every School Wonder lives between the near and far shore, which goes by entirely different rules from the land of the living. Each wonder is able to go to other boundaries and resist the power nullification that exists there. Teru states that supernaturals that live in the Wonders' boundaries don't follow the laws of the human world and they can actively go against them. She should also scale to the other School Wonders, who are able to use their abilities in other boundaries), Nothingness Manipulation and Corrosion Inducement (Should scale to Shinigami, who was unaffected by the voids that were appearing all over Shinigami's boundary. These voids are able to rot your body away into nothing by getting near them. Scales to Hanako, who was able to stand next to a void and was unaffected), Mind Manipulation (Every School Wonder's Yorishiro is able to protect them from the mind manipulation that was coming from the Hell of Mirrors), Time Manipulation (Via Extra-Temporal speed)

Paintbrush: Shijima Mei is able to create a paintbrush as one of her avatars to interact with the fictional world. This paintbrush is able to create things by drawing such as a flying vehiles and other items. This paintbrush is also able to attack people and ignore their durability while turning them into paint.

Paint: Shijima Mei is able to make paint suplies from nothing to restain an opponent to stop them from moving. This paint is also able to silence her opponents while also being able to strech to accommodate for the enemy's strength. This paint is also able to make a person stick to any serface to restrict their movement even further. She is able to create more of the paint if an enemy were to get free from her restrants.

Notebook: Shijima Mei carries a notebook everywhere she goes. This notebook is able to create things based on the things drawn in it. She is able to make perfect replicas of things such as chocolate, an elephant, weapons, and even people. When she copies a person, she is able to copy the abilities of said person that she copies.

Miscellaneous Weapons: Shijima Mei is able to create any weapon or object from her notebook and make it come to life. She can add any property to the weapons she makes such as making extremely heavy weapons light or making exposives that can erase absract beings.

Intangible Knife: Shijima Mei created a knife that is able to cut through anything as she describes it. This knife is able to completely ignore a person's defence and cancel out their abilities. She uses this knife in order to cut down the rumors around her, completely negating their physiology.

Narrative Erasure: Shijima Mei is able to use a knife in the real world to destory your body while not allowing you to regenerate until she redraws them

Standard Tactics: Shijima Mei sends you to her fictional world, which is filled with all of your wants and desires. Her avatars will keep the world in check while stopping you from leaving if you were to find out that the world is fiction. If the opponent were to further resist, she will erase you from the world.

Weaknesses: If Shijima Mei's Yorishiro is broken, he will become far weaker and will be vulnerable. The only way to break said Yorishiro is to be bonded to a School Wonder.

Trivia

As stated on her student card, Shijima Mei was in class 3-E of the Kamome Academy Highschool Division. This places her age at 17-18 at the time of her death.
As stated on the card, she was born in the Shōwa era. Her birth year was partially blurred, but the numbers resembled Shōwa 58 (1983).
Shijima uses "ワタシ" (watashi, katakana) while the original Mei uses "わたし" (watashi, hiragana).
In Chapter 53, the "real" version of Shijima Mei enjoys eating fluffy pancakes, which is seen when she and Nene have a brief lunch at a cafe.
The 四 in Shijima means four, a reference to her position as No.4.
In the pilot chapters, there was a unnamed ghost apparition that had her spot as No. 4 of the Seven School Mysteries.
The official appearance of Shijima was made in Chapter 40 when Tsukasa unveiled her under the tablecloth. Although it doesn't correlate with No.2 or No.5, the other School Wonders aside from Hanako have been introduced in their numeric chapters respectively.
Shijima is curiously indifferent towards lightning, while the original Mei calmly sees it as an exciting moment.
