Background

Metal Gear ZEKE is a nuclear equipped bipedal tank created by Huey Emmerich and Dr. Strangelove for the private army Militaires Sans Frontières. It is the first Metal Gear ever created, being equipped with multiple machine guns, missiles, a railgun, and a nuclear warhead. Big Boss would be forced to fight against ZEKE when it was hijacked by the Cipher agent Pacifica Ocean. Big Boss would defeat Pacifica Ocean and ZEKE would be damaged but would eventually be repaired. Later, during XOF's raid on the MSF mother base, ZEKE would seemingly be destroyed after it snuck into the ocean along with mother base.

Peace Walker Incident

In 1974, Big Boss and the MSF commissioned doctors Huey Emmerich and Strangelove to create Metal Gear ZEKE. Emmerich supervised the assembly of the frame, and Strangelove oversaw the development of the AI, it was intended to function as an unmanned weapon. Because the MSF was lacking of a defense department level budget, they required that they salvage parts from the various AI weapons. In addition, MSF subcommander Kazuhira Miller and Huey Emmerich were the ones who coined the name Likewise, the team also had problems adjusting the AI to get it up and running until Strangelove joined ZEKE's development.

Shortly after ZEKE was completed, Miller suggested that the nuclear warhead recovered from Peace Walker be used to arm the weapon, with the intention of making it a deterrent against hostile countries opposed to the MSF's fledgling "mercenary nation. Miller also pointed out that this was a good opportunity to arm ZEKE due to the White House being too busy figuring out how to create a cover story regarding the late CIA Station Chief Hot Coldman's nearly starting an all-out nuclear war. Because of the decision by Big Boss to arm ZEKE with the nuclear warhead, MSF also unofficially became the world's seventh nuclear power. However, Cipher agent Pacifica Ocean secretly made further modifications to ZEKE, allowing it to accommodate a human pilot, while her KGB ally Vladimir Zadornov escaped the MSF's custody multiple times, serving as a diversion. Some of the modifications included installing a pilot's seat inside the AI pod, a dual-control piloting lever for operating the legs, a safety restraint, and a fluid-filled cockpit for shock absorption.

Pacifica eventually hijacked ZEKE, with Zadornov escaping the seventh time as a diversion for her to make off with the weapon unnoticed. Big Boss discovered this shortly after encountering and killing Zadornov in self-defense at MSF's Mother Base. Proclaiming ZEKE to be the creation of Cipher (the group responsible for the development of the Peace Walker Project), Pacifica attempted to force Big Boss into joining their planned new world order. Big Boss refused, so Pacifica decided to use ZEKE to launch a nuclear strike at the East Coast of the United States, which would cause the public to believe that the Militaires Sans Frontières were an extremist cult. Big Boss was then forced to fight and defeat Pacifica by heavily damaging ZEKE.

After the incident, Strangelove and Huey discussed ZEKE's fate, and Strangelove revealed that she had made a backup copy of its AI, so at the very least, ZEKE could walk. However, whether ZEKE could continue on or not was up to Big Boss. Big Boss also used ZEKE in a mock battle, upon Huey's suggestion, in case someone attempted to hijack ZEKE again.

Ground Zeros Incident

Several days before the UN inspection as well as the rescue of both Chico and Paz (the latter of whom was revealed to have survived their earlier battle), ZEKE's waterproofing reinforcement had been finished the day before, alongside plans to install the main depth control tank, the compressed air tank, and the altitude control propeller pod two days later, and plans for testing its effectiveness on a seabed 300 feet underwater within the next week should the tests prove positive, with Huey reporting these to Miller and Big Boss, who were more interested and especially irritated at Huey's sending a letter indicating they changed their minds about having the IAEA inspection at Mother Base. Because of Huey making things happen to the extent that MSF was forced to allow the inspection to happen to not draw suspicion, ZEKE was the only vehicle remaining at the base, albeit hidden from sight at the bottom of the ocean below Mother Base. Mother Base was destroyed when XOF commenced their Trojan Horse operation.

Aftermath

Huey implied that ZEKE had been destroyed by the sinking debris of Mother Base. ZEKE's role as Outer Heaven's nuclear deterrent was eventually replaced by the smaller TX-55 Metal Gear. Its overall role, however, was eventually replaced by Battle Gear for the MSF's successor group Diamond Dogs, with its leader, Venom Snake, privately remarking that he had a sense of déjà vu upon hearing Huey's proposal.

This pod can be fitted with various types of memory boards that can increase the effectiveness of different aspects of ZEKE, These include ZEKE's mobility, ZEKE's search capability. ZEKE's offensive capability, and ZEKE's response time.

  • Head: The Pupa Head is a head that shares the same shape as the head used for the Pupa. This head has two mounted machine guns that can be swapped with a singular Electric Shock Unit, allowing ZEKE to perform low damage rapid fire attacks, attack at a distance with moderate damage, or use maximum voltage to unleash a immensely damaging charged shot.
  • Jetpack: the Jetpack gives ZEKE the ability to charge around like the Pupa, dealing moderate damage to anything in its path.

Chrysalis Parts

  • Head: The Chrysalis head is a head that shares the same shape as the head used for the Chrysalis. This head allows ZEKE to fire homing missiles that can do more damage than ZEKE's standard missiles.
  • Radome: The Radome is a circular dish fitted to ZEKE's left side similar to the one fitted onto the Chrysalis. It increases ZEKE's accuracy and allows ZEKE to function even when a Chaff Grenade is being used on it.
  • Railgun: The Railgun is an electromagnetic weapon that is similar to the one fitted onto the Chrysalis. It uses electromagnets to accelerate projectiles such as bullets at high speeds, giving the railgun heavy firepower along with giving it a far range. Increased AI capability allows for the railgun to become more deadly, as it becomes more powerful and ZEKE's evasion increases.

  • Head: The Cocoon head is a head that shares the same shape as the head used for the Cocoon. This head features a cannon that allows ZEKE to fire cannon balls that do massive splash damage.
  • Armor: Armor that reduces damage inflicted upon ZEKE.

Peace Walker Parts

  • Head: The Peace Walker head is a head that shares the same shape as the head used for the Peace Walker. This head gives ZEKE the ability to use the Paralysis Beam, which renders those who touch it temporarily immobile. Along with this the head allows for ZEKE to produce an electromagnetic pulse which reflects any missile heading towards it as well as grenades from rifle-mounted grenade launchers.
  • Legs: The Peace Walker Legs give ZEKE enhanced mobility along with allowing it to use S-mines. ZEKE is able to shoot these S-mines out in a horizontal direction.

Weaknesses: Metal Gear ZEKE can be affected by technology dampening equipment.

Note: The main Metal Gear cast are not assumed to scale to the potency of any of the Metal Gears or other types of armored vehicles, from feats like Gray Fox and Liquid Snake being able to tank the destruction of Metal Gears, as they have been shown to be consistently far weaker than them. Big Boss and Volgin would have been killed by a C3 explosion, which was unable to damage the Shagohod, which is a armored vehicle from 1964, which should be weaker than all of its successors. Big Boss using his strongest weapons was unable to harm the Shagohod without attacking its weak point. Both Big Boss and The Boss would have been killed by the bombs from the MiG planes, which should comparable to the C3 used on the Shagohod. AI weapons such as the Cocoon can nearly one-shot Big Boss with a single attack, along with Miller stating Big Boss can't harm the various armored vehicles in the game without lethal weaponry. Attacks that are able to one-shot Venom Snake, won't one-shot Metal Gear Sahelanthropus. Metal Gear Sahelanthropus' railgun does massive damage to Venom Snake, even when using protective gear like the Battle Dress. Solid Snake needed to use his strongest weapons to attack weak points in order defeat TX-55 Metal Gear. Solid Snake would later do the same when fighting Metal Gear D. Liquid Snake stated that Solid Snake's stringer missiles would kill both him and an injured Gray Fox, with said missiles being unable to harm the armor of Metal Gear REX. Metal Gear REX was able to easily overpower Gray Fox and crushed him to death with a stomp. Liquid Snake tanking Metal Gear REX's destruction is likely due to how he was in its protective cockpit, as even a distance the explosion was able to knock out Solid Snake. Metal Gear RAY, a Metal Gear made to defeat Metal Gears like Metal Gear REX, was able to easily knock out Solid Snake with a single indirect hit. Gekkos, bipedal tanks that are easily destroyed by Metal Gear REX, can one-shot Old Snake.
