Legend takes root... and story, like contagion, spreads unchecked! Becomes this history of a once-might race of Hyper-Gods, direct descendants of the first immense, unknowable Monitor!
~ Narrator in "Final Crisis : Superman Beyond"

Background

The Monitors are higher dimensional civilization imagined by Monitor-Mind The Over-Void to understand the concept of story.

Monitor-Mind The Over-Void created the Monitors centered around a Superman-like figure, hoping to understand the meaning of this idea, and resulting in the formation of the Nil, dimension of the civilization of the Monitors. After long studies on the meaning of this Superman-like form, the Monitors interpreted this idea as a protector figure against ultimate evil, embodied as Mandrakk in their cultural context, thus creating their own legend, mythology, story.

But besides the fact that they are higher dimensional civilization, the Monitors represent DC Comics as cosmic vampires, in charge of studying, watching over and organizing the DC Universe.

Note:

  • Note 1:

This Monitors page does not take into account Monitors before Final Crisis. But someone can make a key about them.

  • Note 2:

The fight between Superman against Mandrakk in Nil was part of the dualistic system that Order and Chaos embody, as Superman stated that he vowed to preserve life, whereas "Mandrakk is the opposite of life". Supporting the fact that the DC Universe is dualistic and that the struggle between Order and Chaos is in all levels/planes of existence, apart from the trans-dual Monitor Mind The Over-Void.

  • Note 3:

It is interesting to note the fact that Dax Novu did not contaminated Monitors with a meaningless story, but the story of Crisis On Infinite Earths, where he saw : "Lives. Deaths. Heroes. Villains. Lovers" during his investigation into the Bleed. Dax Navu contaminated Monitors with these themes from the story of Crisis On Infinite Earths that Monitor-Mind The Over-Void subsequently imagined by forming the civilization of the Monitor and Nil centered around Thought Robot.

Indeed, The Monitors, by interpreting the meaning of Thought Robot, did not only create their own own legend, mythology, story, but their own Crisis with themes that Dax Novu contaminated them:

  • The theme of death is evident in Monitor Zillo Valla's death.
  • The theme of hero is evident in Thought Robot, embodying the hero in the myth of the Monitors.
  • The theme of villain is evident in Rox Ogama, who's responsible for the exile of Nix Uotan in Bleed, and Mandrakk, embodying evil in the myth of the Monitors.
  • The theme of lovers is evident in Nix Uotan and Weeja Deel who were separated because of Rox Ogama.

And the fact that that Monitors interpreted Thought Robot as a "doomsday machine" indicates that the Monitors developed their end-time myths, also supported by statements such as "the beast in darkness" and "countdown" common in the context of different cultures of a figure appearing at the end of time. In the context of the culture of Monitors, this figure is identified as Mandrakk.

These details must be pointed out, since Thought Robot and Mandrakk fought in Final Crisis, showing that Final Crisis was the Crisis of Monitors, and thus their end of time, as stated in the following scan : "On doors of black iron, a doomsday countdown reaches zero".

Explanations

The reason why the Monitors are "At most" tier High 1-A is because Grant Morrison asserted that the Monitor World is beyond the Sphere of the Gods.

So, the Monitors are beyond the category of gods in the DC hierachy, who transcend the concepts of space, time, matter as I explained in-depth in the following blog:

User_blog:Kuuzzo/DC_cosmology_(in-depth)

However, if the Monitors are "At most" tier High 1-A, it implies that there is a reason why it's not their definite tier, as the Monitor Sphere exist in a level/plane of existence which, although it's a higher dimension, is a dimension whose structure does not follow the logic of the lower dimensions : Limbo and the Sphere of the Gods, which are dimensions in which the concepts of space, time and scale, etc. are meaningless, unlike the Monitor Sphere.

The reason why those concepts do exist in the Monitor Sphere, but neither in Limbo nor in the Sphere of the Gods, is because the Monitor Sphere, which was one with Monitor-Mind The Over-Void, changed its structure after Monitor-Mind The Over-Void imagined the civilization of Monitors and after Dax Novu also contaminated Monitors with stories (of COIE), introducing the concept of "beginning" and "ending" in their dimension.

Therefore, the Monitor Sphere is distinguishable from others because of its structure, but remains a dimension beyond the others in the cosmological hierarchy. So, for this reason, the Monitors are "At most" tier High 1-A.
