Background

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Mark’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

At the beginning of Pokémon Trading Card Game, Mark is described as someone who loves Pokémon and has recently become interested in collecting Pokémon cards. After learning about the Legendary Cards held by the Grand Masters, he decides to try playing the card game and seeks out Dr. Mason for help. In Dr. Mason's lab, Mark learns the basics of playing the Pokémon TCG and a few fundamental strategies. He then sets out to explore TCG Island, aiming to collect the eight Master Medals from the various Elemental Clubs and defeat the Grand Masters at the Pokémon Dome. His rival throughout this journey is Ronald.

In Pokémon Trading Card Game 2: The Invasion of Team GR!, Mark returns as the male playable character, joined by a new female counterpart, Mint. If he is chosen as the player character, Dr. Mason calls on him for help when Team Great Rocket attempts to steal the Legendary Cards and kidnaps many of the Club Masters.

Mark also appears as the main character in Pokémon Card GB The Comix, a one-shot manga based on the game. In it, he defeats his rival Ronald using a strategy that combines Venusaur's Pokémon Power Energy Trans with Charizard's Pokémon Power Energy Burn.

A battle in the manga effectively shows that the Pokémon can appear out of the cards and do attacks to the opponent[1], and in the games Pokémon have natural animations for all their attacks[14], even having an option in game to turn them on or off[14].

While one could argue this is merely through holograms or its inside of the player's head and they're visualizing it, this is disproven from the ending of the first Trading Card Game, where once defeating Ronald it's revealed that the Legendary Pokémon Cards have chosen Mark and vanish from Ronald's deck[7], they also directly float and glow in the air[43] and speak to Mark[43].

There's even some implications of card abilities working on people in Pokémon Trading Card Game 2: The Invasion of Team GR!. There, the GR No. 4 used the power of their super-strength which they note is the same power they used to brainwash everyone in the psychic club[17]. Brainwashing referring to them being under literal mind control[12].

Brooke notes how because she made a large water area for her adorable water Pokémon, water takes less energy to retreat[44], this could only be possible if the cards were actually having some impact with reality.

Bernard explains that due to being around flowing lava, his fire types have their weakness to water ignored[45].

Brutus explains due to being focused and disciplined he can unleash the cards full power and have them ignore resistances when they strike[46].

Card Game Explanations

Energy

In order for Pokémon to do any act, they must have energy cards thus having no energy cards will make them unable to do any actions[47].

There consists of 7 types of energy cards: Grass, Fire, Water, Lightning, Psychic, Fighting, and Colorless[47]. The type of energy needed is based on the Pokémon[47].

Attacking

The typical method of harming a defending Pokémon, this requires energy in order to do so[47].

Retreating

Unlike standard Pokémon games where retreat means to flee from battle, in the Trading Card game, it means switching the active Pokémon with a bench Pokémon[47]. Energy is required in order to do a successful retreat[47], with the number of energy cards required varying on the Pokémon.

Evolving Pokémon

There are three types of Pokémon cards: Basic Pokémon, Stage 1 Pokémon, and Stage 2 Pokémon[47]. For example, Squirtle is a Basic Pokémon type, Wartortle is a Stage 1 Pokémon type, and Blastoise is a Stage 2 Pokémon type[47]. Only Basic Pokémon cards can be put directly into play which then leads into being able to evolve the Basic Pokémon into a Stage 1 Pokémon and then a Stage 1 Pokémon into a Stage 2 Pokémon[47].

Using Pokémon Power

Some Pokémon possess special abilities known as Pokémon Powers[47]. Some activate as soon as the Pokémon is played whiile others must be directly chosen[47].

Ending Turn

The turn ends after an attack is initiated, if one has no energy or active Pokémon cannot move due to a special condition, the turn is ended by choosing the done command[47].

Win or Loss of a Duel

The win or loss of a duel is decided by prizes; these are cards that the players may draw when they knock out one of the opponent's Pokémon[47]. A win is decided by if players knock out as many of the opponent's Pokémon as there are prizes to be drawn[47]. Players also will lose the duel if they have no cards in their deck at the start of their turn or if there are no Pokémon in their play area[47].

Special Conditions

The following is an explanation of the various Special Conditions of the Pokémon Trading Card Game

Special Conditions
Name Effect Appearances
Asleep The Pokémon cannot attack or retreat. It must be turned sideways (usually counterclockwise) to indicate its condition. During Pokémon Checkup (the between-turns step), the player whose Pokémon is Asleep flips a coin. If heads, the Pokémon wakes up and the condition is removed. If tails, it remains Asleep. Asleep is analogous to both the Sleep and Freeze status conditions in the core series games. It is replaced by Paralyzed or Confused if either is inflicted. The condition is removed if the Pokémon retreats to the Bench, evolves, devolves, or is affected by a card like Double Full Heal. Most Pokémon TCG Sets
Burned The Pokémon takes damage during Pokémon Checkup. A Burn marker is placed on the Pokémon to indicate the condition. As of the Sun & Moon Series, 2 damage counters are placed on a Burned Pokémon during Pokémon Checkup. After placing damage, the player whose Pokémon is Burned flips a coin; if heads, the Pokémon is cured, but it remains Burned on tails. Prior to the Sun & Moon Series, a coin was flipped first; if tails, 2 damage counters were placed, and if heads, no damage was taken but the Pokémon remained Burned. Burned is analogous to the Burn status condition in the core series games. It can coexist with any other Special Condition. It is removed if the Pokémon retreats to the Bench, evolves, devolves, or is affected by a card like Double Full Heal. Most Pokémon TCG Sets (introduced in the Expedition Base Set)
Confused The Pokémon's card must be turned upside-down to indicate its condition. If a Confused Pokémon tries to attack, the player flips a coin. If heads, the attack proceeds as planned. If tails, 3 damage counters are placed on the Pokémon and the player's turn ends. Confused is analogous to the Confusion status condition in the core series games. It is replaced by Asleep or Paralyzed if either is inflicted. The condition is removed if the Pokémon retreats to the Bench, evolves, devolves, or is affected by a card like Double Full Heal. Most Pokémon TCG Sets
Paralyzed The Pokémon cannot attack or retreat. It must be turned sideways (usually clockwise) to indicate its condition. The condition automatically wears off at the beginning of the owner's next turn. Paralyzed is analogous to both the Paralysis and Freeze status conditions in the core series games. It is replaced by Asleep or Confused if either is inflicted. The condition is removed if the Pokémon retreats to the Bench, evolves, devolves, or is affected by a card like Double Full Heal. Most Pokémon TCG Sets
Poisoned The Pokémon takes damage during Pokémon Checkup. A Poison marker is placed on the Pokémon to indicate the condition. During Pokémon Checkup, 1 damage counter is placed on a Poisoned Pokémon. Unlike Burned, no coin is flipped to cure the condition. Poisoned is analogous to the Poison status condition in the core series games. It can coexist with any other Special Condition. The condition is removed if the Pokémon retreats to the Bench, evolves, devolves, or is affected by a card like Double Full Heal. Most Pokémon TCG Sets
Imprisoned The Pokémon cannot use its Poké-Power or Poké-Body, if it has any. A marker is used to denote a Pokémon as Imprisoned. Unlike other common conditions, a Pokémon stays Imprisoned if it retreats or is switched out. The only ways to remove it are by evolving the Imprisoned Pokémon, using a card effect that removes any condition such as Double Full Heal, or having the afflicted Pokémon leave play. This condition can only be inflicted by Gardevoir ex δ from the EX Dragon Frontiers expansion. EX Dragon Frontiers
Shock-wave By itself, this condition does nothing. However, Tyranitar ex δ from the EX Dragon Frontiers expansion has an attack that Knocks Out any one of the opponent's Pokémon in play with this condition. A marker is used to denote a Pokémon as having the Shock-wave condition. Like Imprisoned, the Shock-wave condition does not get removed upon retreating or switching out, so the afflicted Pokémon has to evolve, leave play, or be manually healed for it to be removed. This condition can only be inflicted by Tyranitar ex δ. EX Dragon Frontiers
