Arceus
Arceus is a Normal-type Mythical Pokémon that first appeared in Generation IV. Arceus has no pre-evolution nor evolution, but it does possesses a form corresponding to each of the eighteen types, which it can assume by holding a Plate or a type-specific Z-Crystal. Regardless of its form, it is always referred to simply as Arceus.
Like Darkrai and Shaymin before it, Arceus was not officially acknowledged by Nintendo until February 14, 2009, the year its debut movie was released. It was later revealed to international audiences on August 3, 2009.
Arceus is credited with creating the Pokémon of myth, the lake guardians, and the entire Pokémon universe. In Sinnoh mythology, it is known as the Original One, and in ancient Hisui it was worshiped under the name almighty Sinnoh. Arceus serves as the titular character and a central figure in the storyline of Pokémon Legends: Arceus.

According to Sinnoh mythology, a single Pokémon Egg emerged from a vortex of complete chaos and nothingness that existed before the Pokémon universe. Arceus hatched from this egg and shaped the universe using its thousand arms, forming regions including Sinnoh, then known as Hisui, and Ransei. It also created the eggs from which the Pokémon of myth—Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina—and the lake guardians—Uxie, Azelf, and Mesprit—hatched, and it can recreate these eggs at will. As the oldest Pokémon in existence, it is called the "Original One" in folklore. Arceus banished Giratina to the Distortion World for its violent nature and granted the lake guardians the power to calm Dialga or Palkia should they become enraged. Like the Pokémon of myth, Arceus resides in another dimension beyond time and space, where it appears as a silhouette of golden light. In the Hisui Pokédex tasks, having Arceus join the party is described as "receiving a part of Arceus," implying that its visible body is only a fragment. Arceus is capable of speech and has stated that "Arceus" is simply the name humans call it. The ancient people of Sinnoh worshiped it as "almighty Sinnoh," "great Sinnoh," and "might of Sinnoh," and the term "Sinnoh" later became the name of the region. The Diamond Clan and Pearl Clan also worshiped it, though they mistook Dialga and Palkia for Arceus. Both Palkia and Dialga's Origin Formes have body shapes resembling Arceus, believed to be a strategy for gaining its powers. Professor Laventon describes Arceus as "the heavenly fount from which pours the light that shines across Hisui" and the protector of all Pokémon. In ancient myths, the Origin Ore is said to contain Arceus's power. As shown in Pokémon: Arceus and the Jewel of Life, Arceus cared for and safeguarded the planet in ancient times, protecting the world from cataclysms such as meteors, and showed gratitude and compassion to those who treated it with kindness. However, it does not suffer fools gladly—it will attack violently if betrayed or deceived and holds long grudges against those it considered friends. In modern times, Arceus continues to watch over the world and wishes for people and Pokémon to work together in the face of adversity. Even when needed, it provides only hints rather than direct intervention. Arceus can bless other Pokémon through bolts of light, making them larger and more powerful, as seen with the ancient hero's ten Pokémon companions. This blessing is passed down through family lines, as seen with the noble Pokémon and ride Pokémon worshiped in Hisui. In Pokémon: Arceus and the Jewel of Life, Arceus demonstrates powers such as restoring things it once destroyed, making objects vanish, halting time, and overturning natural laws. When angered, it can release beams of explosive light. Using its Earth, Splash, Meadow, Zap, and Draco Plates, it created the Jewel of Life, an artifact capable of turning desolate land into fertile ground. In Hoopa and the Clash of Ages, it stopped destruction caused by a space-time void. In Pokémon Journeys: The Series episode "Showdown at the Gates of Warp!", Arceus calmed Dialga and Palkia and destroyed the Red Chain controlling them. It also has the power to split in two, creating a piece of itself to exist outside its realm. In Pokémon Legends: Arceus, it transformed a smartphone into an Arc Phone, allowing communication through text messages. It can appear in dreams and create Pokémon to serve as challenges, as seen in Eternal Battle Reverie. In Pokémon Masters EX, through the sync stone ultimate, Arceus blesses a Trainer it deems worthy, transforming their outfit into an arc suit and granting a divine move. Arceus is the only known Pokémon capable of learning Judgment. It can also use charged-up versions of the Pokémon of myth's signature moves—Roar of Time, Spacial Rend, and Shadow Force—as seen in its boss battle in Pokémon Legends: Arceus. Additionally, Arceus is the only known Pokémon that can have Multitype as an Ability. |
Appearance
General Description: Arceus is a white, equine Pokémon with an androgynous appearance. It resembles a qilin or centaur. It is capable of flight.

Its long mane juts away from its head. Its face is gray with green eyes, red pupils, and a green circular pattern below its eyes. A streak of gold coloration on its head points upward. Its neck is fairly long with two pairs of extrusions to the sides and a flap-like feature on the neck's underside colored white. A golden cross-like wheel is attached to its body by its round abdomen, with four green jewels attached to the wheel. The pattern of striated gray on its underbelly continues past its waist. Notable Techniques
Other
Standard Tactics: Arceus is shown in Pokémon Legends: Arceus to shoot out shockwaves and drop meteors from the sky. Upon getting serious, he starts breaking through space-time to charge and shooting out moves like judgement.
Weaknesses
- Standard Pokémon Weaknesses: Pokémon being greatly angered causes them to be confused[38]. The usage of struggle makes the Pokémon take recoil damage, even if they've barely damaged an opponent[18]. Pokémon become too scared to move when dealing with an entity[39] that cannot be ID'd[39]. One Hit KO Moves do not work if the opponent is higher leveled[40]. Startling a Pokémon in the middle of its evolution will cause it to not evolve[41].
- Type Weaknesses
- Normal Type Weaknesses: Normal Type attacks aren't very effective on rock types and steel types and have no effect on ghost types. As a normal type, it is weak to fighting type attacks.
- Fire Type Weaknesses: Fire Type attacks aren't very effective on other fire types, water types, rock types, and dragon types. As a fire type it is weak to water type attacks, ground type attacks, and rock type attacks.
- Water Type Weaknesses: Water Type moves are not very effective against other water types, grass types, and dragon types. As a water type, Crocit is weak to electric type attacks and grass type attacks.
- Electric Type Weaknesses: Electric Type moves are not very effective against other electric types, grass types, and dragon types and have no effect on ground types. As an electric type, it is weak to ground type attacks.
- Plant Type Weaknesses: Grass Type attacks aren't very effective on other grass types, fire types, poison types, dragon types, bug types, steel types, and flying types. As a grass type, it is weak to fire type attacks, ice type attacks, poison type attacks, flying type attacks and bug type attacks.
- Ice Type Weaknesses: Ice Type moves are not very effective against other ice types, fire types, water types, and steel types. As a ice type, it is weak to fire type attacks, fighting type attacks, rock type attacks, and steel type attacks.
- Fighting Type Weaknesses: Fighting Type moves are not very effect against poison types, flying types, psychic types, bug types, and fairy types. As a fighting type, it is weak to flying type attacks, psychic type attacks, and fairy type attacks.

Misconceptions
Arceus is based off the Abrahamic God
While there are some implications of Arceus that connect it to the Abrahamic God, Arceus shows more connections with Eastern mythology gods.
Firstly, the closest connection for Arceus and Abrahamic is both are stated to have made the universe. However, in Arceus' case the wording is noted that this was done with its 1000 arms, a reference to buddhism. While God's creation story in Abrahamic is normally that it made the universe within seven days and then took a rest.
Another Eastern Mythology reference is Arceus' creation trio, each being in some form a dragon, one of the most popular mythical creatures in Eastern mythology.
Arceus also does not establish itself as a monotheistic deity. Other gods of Pokémon are worshipped and treated on equal or in some cases superior standing then even Arceus.
Codex Statistics Questions
Q: Shouldn't Arceus be listed as omniscient due to it holding all creation as part of itself which would include Uxie who has dominion over Knowledge?
A: Arceus has shown on multiple occassions to not be omniscient. In Arceus' own game (in their true form too), it requires you to explain your appearance to them[1], and to give you its name[1]. In Pokémon: Arceus The Jewel of Life, he is shocked at Palkia and Dialga's betrayal along with being betrayed by humanity, something he did not expect.
Q: Shouldn't Arceus get Unknown-A for shaping and creating the universe?
A: According to Sinnoh Myth, Arceus is the physical form of the original spirit[6] and from the spirit came the Pokémon of time and space[6], with Arceus being noted to have "made them arise"[6]. It's also noted in the same mythos that three beings were born to bind time and space, the Pokémon of the lakes, Uxie, Mespirit, and Azelf[6]. With the myth descirbing how they gave spirit to the world and shaping it[6], with it all starting back to Arceus[6]. Effectively this text surmises that Arceus' creation is more of a technical extension of causing spirit to spread outwards and each of the spirits made helped shape the world, this is consistent with the description of Arceus shaping the world with its 1000 arms[42]. On top of this, it is shown that Arceus does have true relativity with other Legendary Pokémon, it was not able to defeat Dark Matter by itself[7] instead bringing together the power of all the Pokémon in the world just to slow the ascent of the Tree of Life[7], noting Dark Matter is too strong from atop the Tree of Life[7].
Q: Shouldn't Arceus get every Pokémon's move and abilities due to the Plates being imbued with the essence of all creation that when used allows the Pokémon to gain the power of every type there is[5]?
A: The statement is in reference to the Legend Plate, which allows Arceus when using Judgement to change the type of Judgement to a type based off the selected opponent's type and has Arceus change their own type too[43]. This does not at all give Arceus access to all moves or the like. While one could attempt to argue this as Ludonarrative Dissonance, Pokémon like Mew have access to all TMs to showcase that they can use any Pokémon move, obviously within gameplay it cannot learn moves not tied to TMs or aren't TMs anymore in a future game, though the purpose is clear that all TMs = Mew can learn all moves. Arceus can learn a large pool of TMs, but it cannot learn all of them, showcasing the intent of the plates were not that Arceus can use every single move. The statement is in reference to that it can freely swap between any Pokémon type it wants when attacking.
