Viola is the deuteragonist of the novella and manga The Witch's House: The Diary of Ellen and the primary antagonist of The Witch's House game. She is a young teenager who ventured too deep into the forest despite her father's warnings and made a friendship that would cause her despair.

Background

Viola is the name of a thirteen-year-old girl who lives with her hunter father in a rural village that is right next to a forest that contains rumors about a witch living in it. Viola herself was leaving off to the forest to play and collect flowers, before her father warned her about the which. She did not believe the rumors are merely thinks it as an old wives' tale for children to scare them off into venturing too deep into the forest, her annoyance towards her father caused her to venture a bit too deep into the forest, but continued on since she knew the way back. While standing around looking at flowers, she gets startled by a black cat who seemingly beckons her to follow it. She follows the cat, going through unknown parts of the woods before coming across a large house with a garden. Seeing the cat go into the house, she decides to reluctantly go in and see if anybody is home, going through many rooms, before finding the black cat waiting for her on the second floor next to a door. Viola opens the door and sees a young girl sleeping, she examines the girl closely, seeing she looks unhealthy and bandaged-up, just before the door slams shut, waking up the girl and asking Viola who she is. Viola replies with her name and the girl is surprised that Viola does not seems repulsed by her appearance, replying with her name, "Ellen," shortly after. She then asks if Viola wants to be her friend, to which Viola agrees as she realizes that Ellen is all alone in her huge house. She leaves soon after due to her being particularly ill that day, finding her way back home to quickly make dinner before her father returned home (as her mother had passed away earlier in her life), she thought about Ellen's curious hair and eyes before her father arrived home.

The next day, Viola decided to check if the house she saw was truly real, and ended up returning back to the house in which Ellen resides. Ellen at the door was happy to see her, not expecting her to return. Viola started to warm up with the young girl quickly, seeing that despite being sick, she was not different from any other girl her age. Both of them had tea in Ellen's room, Viola asks Ellen about her origin, as her hair and eye color were unusual around the area they lived in, to which Ellen agrees and shows her a book of the same topic. Viola notices that Ellen is able to read advanced books (books that make her head hurt) and asks her about it, to which Ellen replies that since she is stuck inside the house due to her illness, all she can do is read. Viola continues to question Ellen, asking about her how long she had resided in the mansion, Ellen not remembering, and where her parents are, to which Ellen shakes her head and says that they stopped showing up some time ago. Viola tries to cheer her up by saying her parents are working just like her father, which seems to cheer Ellen up. Ellen gets near Viola's and examines her eyes and compliments them. Viola returns home to her father noticing her behaving differently and asking her about, to which she dismisses it quickly. Viola's father tells her it is fine to play in the woods, but that she should stay far away from the depths of the forest.

Viola was more in a rush to go back to Ellen and be with her the next morning, to the point that her father noticed that her dress was put hastily, much to her embarrassment. Viola started realizing that Ellen knew much than she let on, but was more concerned with her sickness when she noticed her ill-stricken legs, almost making her repulse with sickness, but at the same time felt pity for Ellen. She could not comprehend where anybody who supposedly took care of Ellen were as nobody was ever there when she visited her. Viola realized something was off with her last interaction with Ellen as she asked her to return home before it got too late and the black cat stared her down. She reached her home later than usual much to her father's concern, and realized that something was wrong as Viola was on the verge of tears.

Ellen was shaken from her last interaction with Ellen and stared into the rain as she an image of Ellen wandered into her mind. She envisioned Ellen waiting for Viola to come over before resigning to her fate of being eternally lonely with nobody to be around her because Viola did not visit again. This scared her to the point of running out into the rain and to visit Ellen, surprising her father for her sudden movement. She thought back to Ellen being surprised that she was not scared of her condition, which causes her to feel guilty for even getting repulsed at her condition. Ellen was completely surprised to see Viola arrive at her room with the rain pouring outside. Viola simply said that she missed her, which caused Ellen to smile.

Over the course of the summer, Viola would continue to visit Ellen, noting that lack of a presence inside the mansion, growing more attached to Ellen as she realized how alone Ellen would have been without her. Viola grew concerned as Ellen's condition never improved, at one point blaming herself for it, causing Ellen to deny such claims and insisting her to continue coming by. Viola was surprised by how strong Ellen seemed, not being overwhelmed by sadness due to her condition. This sight makes Viola mutter to herself about wanting to swap places with Ellen, to which Ellen hears and thanks Viola with a smile. Ellen continues by being happy that Viola would be friends with some such as herself, to which Viola rejects the notion, stating her to be just like any other girl. Ellen denied this saying she was going to die soon, being happy to get rid of the doctor's burden of helping her change her bandages and helping her, as well as her parents wishing her gone. Viola is horrified to hear this, trying to calm Ellen down by saying what she was saying was not true. Ellen then looks at Viola with a pained expression as states her parents are hiding her. She continues this by saying that all the adults in the village that Viola is from is hiding her from everyone. This shocks Viola, thinking that her father had part in helping hiding Ellen's existence from everybody, including her. Ellen tries to comfort Viola by saying her father is good person, she just believed that the adults thought her disease was contagious. Viola pleaded with her to not say such things, she truly could not comprehend nor believe that the adults of her village, which included her father, would hide Ellen of all people as she believed she was just a normal girl with an unfortunate condition. Viola exclaims how much she would grieve Ellen's death, to which Ellen smiles and says that Viola being there for her is all she ever needed. She hugged Ellen in a rush of emotion and left. Viola's father was waiting outside the house, upset that she had been returning late more often than before. He questions her whereabouts, to which Viola lies stating she had been at a friend's house, to which her father rebukes. She finally told her she was visiting Ellen, which caused him confusion as he did not know anybody with that name. Viola angry, asked her dad if he was hiding something, to which he grew concerned and asked her about it. He chose his words carefully and gave her his vague reasoning to not go into the forest, which in sudden realization asked her if she had been venturing deep into the woods. Viola caught red-handed, decided to lie to her father before locking herself in her room, feeling guilty. She felt ashamed she could not ask her father about the truth of Ellen and worried about Ellen's mortality.

Waiting a bit later than usual so her father would go off to work, Ellen noticed a note from her father, to which she did not read right away and ventured off into the forest to collect a basketful of flowers for Ellen. She gets bit by an insect and notices that black cat from before standing in the middle of the path towards Ellen's house. Much to Viola's surprise, the cat talks to her. He coldly explains to her about the existence of magic and waits for Viola to slowly connects the dots about it and Ellen. Feeling a bit jealous, he questions Viola as to why she befriended Ellen, and if it was out of pity. She did not know what to say, simply stating that she wanted to be friends with her because it came naturally to her. The cat was not amused by this response, and then tells her about Ellen's death happening later today. This shocks Viola but the black cat noticed that she might have felt relieved in her death. He continues by telling her about a body-swapping spell that Ellen knows, swapping her decaying body with a healthy one. This scared Viola because she did not believe that such a thing could happen, and even if it was real, she said it in passing and not necessarily as consent to the spell. He tells her about the things Ellen is doing to her body, cutting off her legs and gouging her eyeballs out. She could not accept that Ellen was doing that, to which the black cat continued to make her feel uncomfortable. He calls her out on pretending to be a good person just to watch Ellen die slowly, causing Ellen to feel sicker as he continued. She felt the bug bite she received stabbing at her like a knife, the black cat continued to question her love for Ellen, saying that Viola could not live honestly while Ellen did. He smiles, stating that the reason she is hearing him talk is because they already switched bodies.

Viola was now in Ellen's body and recoiled in pain, screaming out and yelling out all while Ellen was overjoyed at her new body. Ellen pretended to look for medicine to numb the pain Viola was in, but instead burned her throat as she could not stand hearing her own voice screaming. She laughed at Viola and her misfortune. Viola demands for her body back, to which Ellen accuses her of lying, which she had not. Ellen decided to keep the body forever, laughing at her once more before leaving the room with Viola in despair.

Now inside of Ellen's body and mind, Viola was reflecting on the events that occurred just before she found herself in this state. She saw all of Ellen's early memories, and her life as a witch. She tried to reason with herself, being happy that Ellen did not have to suffer anymore, but realized she had been lying to herself about her feelings with Ellen. She kept falling into despair, until she saw the amount cadavers that a vision of Ellen sat on, her previous "friends", the pile who she would join. Viola felt her body be content, as if it had fulfilled its goal. She found Ellen's one true wish, to be loved. She saw that everything Ellen did was because she sought after someone to love her for herself, nothing more and nothing less. Viola believed she was happy to die, as she believed that Ellen deserved love more than she ever did. Just before she could sit on that thought, she realized something horrible about Ellen's wish, as it was twisted and in no way, love. Viola saw her twisted reflection, with a terrifying smile, being alongside her father. She screamed, and started to truly hate Ellen for what she had done to her, right there and then, she realized she knew all the magic that Ellen did, all the traps of the house, the house itself, and without thinking, she had sealed the exits to the mansion's grounds, keeping Ellen trapped.

Viola tried with all her effort to either kill or force Ellen to give her body back. Perhaps due to a lack of experience, she was unable to catch up to Ellen as she also knew the house in-and-out, avoiding every trap and grabbing a small bottle that contained despair which now effected Viola. Upon leaving the mansion by chasing her, she slowed down as the magic disappeared from her body. Ellen stabs Viola, taunting at her failed attempt of beating her just before Viola's father arrived. Ellen hid behind Viola's father, which Viola slowly crawled to her father begging for help. Viola's father not knowing at what transpired shoots her daughter dead without ever knowing the truth.

Appearance


Viola is a young teenager with blonde braided hair, green eyes, and fair skin who wears a white dress with a ribbon around her waist, accented with a navy blue line (sometimes with a red line that goes around the bottom part of her dress), and a pair of leather shoes.


After having her body swapped with the witch, Ellen (The Witch's House), she appears as a seven-year-old girl with pale skin, long light purple hair, amputated legs, and gouged out eyes. Additionally, she wears a bloodied well-tailored white blouse, a red one-piece dress, and a red ribbon on her hair.

Personality

  • Joyful: Viola loves to spend time out in the woods, collecting flowers and generally playing around in the woods.
  • Defiant Kid: Being thirteen-years-old[2], Viola gets upsets at her father for telling her to be careful about the witch living in the woods, believing it to be an old wives' tale to keep children from getting lost in the woods. When Ellen manipulates Viola about the "truth" about her, she goes against her father's warnings back to the woods[3].
  • Cares For Her Father: Having no other family than her dad, Viola loves and cares about him, unfortunately being the catalyst of her eventual death due to despairing of what Ellen will do with her father after she is gone[4].

Viola's Father

  • Being Viola's only parent, he is protective of Viola, warning her about the potential danger of a witch inside the woods daily, much to Viola's annoyance. Due to being a hunter, he is out in the woods looking for food daily and usually all day, leaving Viola to due to chores and cook before he comes back home. He is very perceptive of Ellen as he quickly notices something is up when Viola became friends with Ellen[5]. With Viola's behavior becoming increasingly suspicious, he confronts her about her whereabouts during the day, to which Viola responds to very negatively. Even when Viola is under the impression that her father was keeping silent of Ellen's condition, she believed him to just have been mistaken by the popular opinion[3]. He leaves Viola's a note as an apology to Viola, but in a rush to visit Ellen, she did not read it. In the end of The Witch's House (Game), he is seen with his rifle worried about Viola's safety, killing the witch[6] (Viola was in Ellen's body at this point) without realizing, trying to protect her.


Ellen (The Witch's House)

  • After following the Black Cat deep into the woods and into the mansion, Viola finds Ellen in bed, bandaged-up and covered in blood due to her condition. Ellen explained to Viola that she was always alone in the big mansion Viola found herself, trying to gain pity from Viola herself and asking her to be her friend, Viola accepting the offer as she was swayed by her condition[2]. From that day forward, Viola would always come to the house in order to keep Ellen some company by reassuring her that people do love her, which Ellen used to her advantage to gain insight into Viola's home life, relationship with her father, and examining her face[5]. Viola noticed that Viola seemed more knowledgeable than what she thought was normal for a seven-year-old, but she paid no mind as she was more concerned about Ellen's appearance and her illness, feeling conflicted with her disgust and care she felt for her[7]. Being conflicted with Ellen's sickness, Viola grew hesitant to return, but eventually pushed through her aversion of Ellen's condition as she felt that Ellen was a normal seven-year-old who relied on her as a friend, feeling guilty, she decided to continue going to her house[8]. Viola grew concerned about the lack of people (including Ellen's parents) coming to visit or take care of Ellen, but found herself growing too attached to Ellen, alongside Ellen begging Viola to continue visiting her. With her feelings of pity of Ellen growing, she subconsciously muttered to herself about wishing to switch places with Ellen, which Ellen heard (Ellen had received verbal consent to her body-switching spell). Ellen proceeded to emotionally manipulate Viola further by casting doubt on the adults of her village and her father, noting that they knew she lived out here, but never bothered to tell Viola the truth[9]. Being angry and suspicious of all adults, she decided to wait for her father to leave, before she rushed to the forest and pick some flowers for Ellen, before being reminded by the Black Cat of her consent to the body switching spell[3]. Viola finds herself in immense amounts of pain due to Ellen purposely mutilating her body and removing her eyeballs before the switch happened[10]. Ellen felt no pity for Viola, calling her selfish for not wanting to help her escape her body, leaving her to rot in bed before she died. Being in Ellen's body, she experiences all of Ellen's memories and emotions, noting that her desire and idea of love was twisted, and wants to stop her before she gets anywhere near her father, feeling hatred against Ellen for the first time. Viola was not completely sure about her feelings about Ellen, not even sure if she wanted to kill her or not[4]. Despite Viola's attempts of getting her body back, Ellen outsmarts Viola by using a bottle that was filled with despair that would have killed her originally, ending their friendship as she stabs her eye and her father (unknowingly) killing her.
