Background

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Ellen’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

Ellen is the name of a seven-year-old kid from the slums who was inflicted with an illness due to a curse due to an ancestor from her paternal side of the family. Due to this illness, Ellen's skin cracked and bled often, and caused her great pain in her legs leading her to be remain in bed for most of the day. This caused her to be a lonely child with nobody befriending her, receiving disgusted stares from people who looked at her through the window and even her own father who refused to acknowledge her existence. Due to this, she developed a strong dependence on her mother to give her signs of affection and love. Since her father ignored her, Ellen's mother had to sacrifice her body by working a job (since Ellen's father's job refused to increase his pay and repeatedly needs to take out a loan to survive with his family) and nursing Ellen's symptoms. This dependency became toxic and filled with envy as she began to loathe her mother for receiving her father's affection, wishing to have been born with her hair so that her father would pay attention to her like he did to her mother. Not only this, but she hated her mother for being "alive" as opposed to her rotting away in bed. Since Ellen was unable to do much of anything in bed and being forbidden to go outside by her mother, Ellen watched a black cat catch a mouse from her window, envying its freedom. One afternoon, she noticed a strange black mass from her window, and fearing the worst, she decided to get out of bed (despite the pain in her legs) and examine the mass, leaving her house despite her mother's rule. Noticing the corpse and the crows above, she decided to give the cat she liked a proper burial in a nearby park as to not become food to the crows. As she arrived underneath the shade of the park's tree, she dug a grave for the cat, noting that her arms were free from her illness and could be used as freely as she wanted. After giving her last prayers to the cat (despite her not knowing what the gesture meant), she decided to return back home, completely satisfied with herself. She stopped herself and look at herself when she noticed she got a weird look from a stranger, noticing her rugged attire, she hurried back home to clean herself up before her mother returned home. Unfortunately for Ellen, her mother had returned home from work early and noticed Ellen had broken her rule. Ellen realized she did something wrong as her mother would not reply to her reasons for leaving the house, nor change her expression. Ellen's mother cleaned her up and fixed her bandages, but Ellen noticed that the love of her mother was gone, and with that she stopped returning one day. Ellen's father was the one who felt the most grief from her disappearance, as she herself instead feels empty and a new feeling of despair she never knew before. She tried to justify her mother's disappearance by rationalizing that her mother needed a break from taking care of her and would soon return. She deluded herself with her conviction and tried taking care of herself to the best of her ability. Fearing the already absent recognition from her father somehow getting worse, she decided to not show any grief. Ellen realized that her father had stayed home more often, believing he had been fired, and that he has been staying in his room more often with a sweet aroma leaving his room. Because of her father's neglect, Ellen grew increasingly worried due to her medicine and bandages being used up and as she left her room to get a glass of water, she found her mother near the entryway of her home. Being ecstatic at her return at first, she soon realized she was wearing completely different clothes and had a different smell, (previously having one of baked confections) she slowly realized that her mother was going to leave her. With her mother's hug and confirmation of her fear, Ellen in a fit of rage due to being abandoned with her neglectful father, grabbed a small knife and stabbed her mother in the neck multiple times as she noted that she learned this from watching the black cat from before kill a mouse by attacking their neck. Her father left his room to see what the commotion was and Ellen was euphoric at that thought that her father would give her any attention. Her father instead when straight to his wife's corpse and sobbed, causing Ellen in another fit of rage to kill her father for never giving her a glance. In shock of what she did, she panicked and stumbled around, wailing at her predicament before a strong wind from the open window knocked her father's lit pipe down on the floor, causing her house to slowly get engulfed in flames. She escaped in a panic before falling down in a dark alleyway, sobbing as she felt that her condition is the reason these events happened and that nobody would love her. She was imagining the black cat she buried and imagined nobody would treat her like she did to the cat, and would die as a mass like the black cat did. Immediately after, a black cat appeared, thanking Ellen for giving her two souls to eat on and explaining that children killing people are the only way that he and other demons are able to eat. He then talked Ellen into becoming a witch, stating that the alternative was dying in the cold alleyway. Not having much of a choice and wanting to escape the cold she agreed. Ellen awakes in a nice room, which confuses Ellen as she has never seen anything like it. She at first thought it was a dream as all she had known was her dirty blanket and her ill body, but the Black Cat snapped her out of her daydream-like state and told her that everything in the house they reside on is a benefit of being a witch, including her face which he complemented. Ellen believed he was jesting but upon seeing herself in a mirror, she saw her face and body had no signs of her disease. She learned about tea and enjoyed the taste of it. The Black Cat realized that Ellen did not know how to write or read, so he decided to teach her. Ellen asked about the roses around the mansion which the Black Cat explained that the previous witch loved them and that she would come around to liking them too, Ellen noted that she at the time did not know how vital roses and their vines would be to her as a witch. Ellen felt happier in the mansion than she had before, having freedom to move around and do anything as long as she was within the confines of the house. Ellen quickly came to realize that the inhabitants of the house had no hearts of their own likening them as toys and wished to make friends with real people. She brings this desire to the Black Cat, which then tells her to invite one over to the house. He proceeds to teach Ellen how to use her magic viewing ability in order to be able to scour anywhere near the forest for any potential friends. Ellen eventually finds a young boy who things might be a good person to befriend, manipulating the forest and creating a path straight to the mansion. The boy eventually reaches the door and Ellen greets him, being amazed by the sheer size of the garden and building. Ellen shyly invites him in order to eat some pastries together and look over books. The Black Cat suspiciously has a conversation with a crow, possibly related to the boy and Ellen, hoping that something would happen any time soon. One day, the boy asked Ellen to come play outside, but Ellen refused at first due to the Black Cat's warning. Eventually, Ellen agreed to go outside in which the house's magic wore off and cause Ellen's illness to return, being covered in cracked skin and blood, scaring off the boy. The Black Cat witnessed the commotion and reminded her of his rule. Ellen being outraged that her disease was not cured and that she got tricked into being a witch, decided to stab the cat, to no avail. The Black Cat reminded subtly Ellen that he had control of the dynamic, but assured Ellen that he had a spell that would completely get rid of her disease as long as she kept feeding him like she did before with her parents. The boy returns the next day apologetic for running away, mistaking Ellen for a monster. This caused a shift in Ellen's view of the boy and decided to punish him by locking him inside a dark room. Shortly after, the mansion spoke to Ellen asking permission to eat him. Ellen allowed it and heard walls slamming together in the room. To her surprise, the boy's body was gone and in his place was a stain of blood. Ellen saw a demon's true form (possibly being the Black Cat or the house itself) and started hearing praise from the house itself. She had been deemed worthy to be the mansion's new witch and craved for more blood. Ellen decided that she had no intention of ever returning back to who she was before this event. The demon praised Ellen for her actions and welcomed her as their witch. Ever since her first killing as a witch, Ellen kept inviting more children to "befriend" them before eventually feeding them to the house. She noted she felt no regret or guilt when killing people or any emotion at all for that matter. To her, human souls which the bodies leave behind are currency in order to be able to buy a demon's spells. Though she felt no symptoms of her disease under the spell of the house, Ellen knew her condition was progressively getting worse as she had stopped taking medicine ever since murder her family. The house decided to compensate Ellen's feeding of it by calling in another demon this time in a form of a black crow, to bring her medicine in exchange for more bodies. Ellen learned that each demon had a different set of spells, with the Black Cat having spells that would harm people as opposed to the Black Crow who made medicinal spells. She learned that demons possess corpses of animals and are unable to kill humans directly and require their witches to do so. Ellen got tired of befriending her victims as she found it more efficient to just lure them into the house and have the house's traps kill them. Being alive for many years, Ellen began to realize her body never grew up and her brain never matured, leading her to start a diary, which the house provided upon thinking about it and automatically writing it for her, leaving it up to the house to remember for her. More people kept making their way into the house and getting killed, but Ellen noticed that after some time, people started referring to her as a "Witch". The Black Cat wondered if Ellen let people go on purpose, to which Ellen herself remembers letting some people go, but could not explain why she did it. She came to conclusion that she was lonely and wanted herself to be known to the people, and for her "friends" to die for her to be able to fulfill her wish of being loved. Ellen realized she could not grasp much information about the demons or control clocks in her house which bothered her slightly. Being in the house for so long, Ellen started to question her identity and what her true goal was, before coming to conclusion that she is fits the mold of being a witch by the name "Ellen" much better than her old self and acquired about anything related to the witch before her to the Black Cat. While in the library, Ellen became aware that the memories of her past slowly became more hazy, being unable to recall her victims faces or much of her past before becoming a witch. After a quick trip to the cells while trying to recall her parents, she returns to the Black Cat stating that they have new victim. Ellen grew tired of the type of victims she got, so she personally decided to question the person that decided to attack her and ask their motivations. She knew that they called her evil, but could not understand their reasoning as to her, they were evil because they were preventing her wish from getting fulfilled. The Black Cat eventually told Ellen to not concern herself with her worries of forgetting the past and that she should focus on continuing killing people to fulfill her wish, in which she agreed with him. Following the advice of the Black Cat, she stayed inside the mansion and kept killing people. One day, she invited a man with a sword to her room, so she could kill him personally. The man had a sword that was able to defenestrate Ellen into a pile of roses. Her magic left her once more, and her illness had gotten progressively worse as bone showed through her rotten legs. The man with the sword then cuts Ellen's head off, and leaves believing he had finally killed the witch of the forest. Ellen awakes again in her bed with the Black Cat mentioning the event that just happened. Ellen realizes that despite the magic working to mask her illness, she now feels some symptoms of the disease. She speculates that because bore witness to her body once more and upon seeing her state of it, her spirited most than likely despaired, causing the magic to not work as effectively. Ellen questions the Black Cat about the validity of witches not dying due to her condition, the Black Cat revealed to her that witches can indeed die if they succumb to despair. Something that angered Ellen greatly as the fact was hidden from her. Upon grabbing the bottle of despair, she saw a vision of a manifestation of Death, which causes her to panic and throw the bottle away. Ellen asked the Black Cat if the previous witch that lived in her home died, to which the Black Cat denied, stating that she was very much still alive, but as the form of a spell that gave Ellen her powers. With peace coming to the forest, less people ventured into the forest looking to kill Ellen. Ellen's sickness had gotten worse to the point that she kept dozing off, being more selective on what people to kill and feed to the house. The Black Crow brought Ellen some bad news in relation to the effectiveness of the medicine he gave her, as due to the state of her condition, the medicines would not longer slow it down. Ellen felt dishearten, but did not show it. The passage of time passed and Ellen noted the changes in society, while she lamented her status as a prisoner to her house. After an unspecified amount of time, Ellen killed her last victim she needed before the Black Cat thought she was ready for a body-swapping spell that would cause her soul to leave her rotting body. With the learning of the spell, Ellen decided to look for the perfect person to switch her body with, landing on a girl with golden braids. With assistance of the Black Cat, he leads Viola who was in the forest, deeper into it to the house. There, Viola sees Ellen in a very sickly manner, covered in bandages. Captivated by the look of the girl and feeling sorry for her situation, she decided to visit her nearly every day she could. Ellen examined Viola's face as to inspect her soon-to-be body and then learned of Viola's loving father. Knowing she had found the perfect host, she proceeded to make herself look more ill so she could cause Viola to feel more pity for her. Eventually, Viola makes a small remark about wishing to switch bodies with her so that she could at least bare some of her pain. Unbeknownst to her, she had consented into the body-switching spell. Once this was set in stone, Ellen decided to mutilate her body and gouge her eyes out, as she wanted to inflict pain to Viola when she eventually switched bodies. Knowing she was never going to return to her old body, she did it with a smile. Once the body-switching spell occurred, Ellen was ecstatic in being in a healthy body, thanking her for giving up her body. She continuously mocked and laughed at Viola's misfortune, leaving her to writhe in pain in her old body, making her way to Viola's home with her father. Before leaving the mansion's grounds, Viola retained all of Ellen's magic as it was bound to her body and prevented her leave, wanting her to go back to her location. Ellen found this to be a fun challenge, telling the Black Cat who accompanied her for a last time, that the house would not kill her because it was still technically her house despite being in a different body for the time being. Due to being well acquainted with her house, she did not fall ill to any of the house's traps, and eventually managed to get her bottle of despair (which would kill her old body) and a knife to stab Viola and continue to mock her. Not long after, Viola's father came looking for her daughter, to which Ellen took advantage of her new look and hid behind him, indicating that Viola (who was now in Ellen's mutilated and ill body) was intent on harming her. Viola's father in a fit of fear, yelled and shot Viola until she died, not knowing he had killed her actual daughter. Ellen snickered at this event and left to go live Viola's life for her.

Appearance

Ellen is a young girl with characteristically light purple hair, golden eyes, and pale skin. Due to a generational curse, she is inflicted with an illness that causes her skin to crack and bleed (possibly some variation of epidermolysis bullosa) so she is covered in bandages that get changed often due to the blood that stains them, wearing a long, ragged, and simple white dress. Due to being bedridden, her expression is generally of envy and aloofness.

Due to the magic of the mansion that she resides in, Ellen's disease is disguised and appears as a healthy young girl. She wears a well-tailored white blouse, a red one-piece dress, and a red ribbon on her hair, but remains barefoot. She wears a fake smile in order to lure victims into mansion after becoming disillusioned.

After making a one-sided deal with Viola, Ellen disfigures her body by amputating her legs and gouging out her eyeballs to get rid of her old body.

Personality

• Lonely Child: Due to Ellen's illness leaving her largely bedridden and appearance full of bloody blisters, Ellen is unable to make any connections (including her father who refuses to look at her) with anybody except her mother for the first part of her life. She watches outside the window and adores the black cat she watches on occasion from her bedroom.
• Deadly Dependency: Ellen's mother is the only person who acknowledges her and at first takes full care of her. This causes Ellen to become afraid of losing her mother's love as she equated it to dying. After leaving her house due to wanting to bury the black cat's corpse, she returns back home and causes an irreparable damage between her and her mother, leaving Ellen alone with her neglectful father. After an unspecified amount of time, Ellen finds her mom back in the house wearing different clothing and smelling different, at first she was overjoyed of her returning, but seeing her like this made her realize that she was abandoning her and her father, so she grabbed a knife and killed her.
• Bloody Tantrums: After the murder of her mother, Ellen expected her father to finally give her attention no matter what, but instead he ignored her like always, fueling her rage and killing him as well. After befriending a young boy, she leaves the mansion grounds despite the warning of the Black Cat, revealing her true form to the boy, scaring him off. This caused a permanent change in her character as when the boy came back to apologize, she fed him to the house and would continue to do so for centuries. She hates the idea that she herself is evil because she has killed people for her own reasons and tried to justify her actions as morally gray to a dying person who died before she could even finish her explanation .
• Loss of Humanity: As a result of various influences affecting Ellen as an individual and a tempting offer made by the Black Cat, she continued to murder people, as she at first only tricked children into her home to feed the house, but later would come to kill just about anyone who came inside the mansion's grounds. She stopped seeing herself as anything but a witch with the name of "Ellen". The moment she saw Viola, she knew that she would be the perfect person to take over their body, so she lured her into her mansion and played the role of a sickly child who was alone to gain Viola's trust and eventually betray her. To ensure that Viola never got her own body back, Ellen mutilated her body to make Viola's last hour of life much more painful, even giving her poison to hamper her screams as she laughed at her misfortune. At the end of The Witch's House (Game), she uses her "Cute Little Bottle" that contained Ellen's despair (which allows Ellen's body, which is currently inhabited by Viola, to die) to escape the mansion grounds, stabs her eye while taunting her, and then pretends to be her to get Viola's father to kill Viola by accident, giggling at her corpse.

Unnamed Mother

Ellen's mother was the only person that seemed to care for her, at least on the surface. She had light-brown hair and carried the scent of sweet confections (possibly making some herself) which Ellen liked and eventually became the source of her despair. She sacrificed herself by taking care of Ellen's seven years of life and took care of Ellen's illness, taking a toll on her body as she also worked a job on the side. Since Ellen's father ignored her, Ellen was very dependent on her mother for affection, to the point that she started to envy her. She prohibited Ellen from going outside due to her condition. Her relationship to her husband is implied to be not the best due to money troubles. Upon returning home early one day and seeing Ellen had gone outside, seemingly being her breaking point, she silently cleaned her up and then left the household, leaving Ellen with her dad who did not care for her. One night, she returned back home for one last time wearing clean and elegant clothing and a different perfume (presumably in an affair with a richer man), where she encountered Ellen in a bit of a surprise and hugs her, apologizing for leaving and will not return. This causes Ellen to snap and kill her brutally by stabbing her repeatedly with a knife. Her soul's "remains" are located in a prison cell within the mansion, which Ellen actively avoids due to her resentment.

Unnamed Father

Ellen's father was a neglectful and stressed man who seems to always be down on his luck. He characteristically had the same colored hair as Ellen, being the parent that continued the curse onto her. Due to being sickly due to the curse, he actively refused to acknowledge her existence, only really loving and doting his wife instead. This causes Ellen grief, making her wish she had the same hair as her mother in order to receive the same love and affection she does. It is implied that he always carries monetary issues due to his job not paying him well and having to take loans, due to this, he is usually having sex with his wife (whether consensual or not is not clear), in a way to relieve his frustration. Upon his wife's disappearance, he shattered emotional and broke down in grief. Despite being with his daughter, he continued to ignore her, speaking to objects instead of her, and not even restocking the medical supplies needed for Ellen's condition. Ellen noticed that her dad was at home more often, suggesting that he might have been fired from his job due to not showing up to work. Ellen noted that her father received a strange packet from a man in exchange for money, leaving his room less and less with an increasingly sweet smell coming out of it, until he stopped coming out of him room all together (suggesting he had become addicted to opium). After hearing the commotion outside his room, he finally left his room in the first time in a while, looking like a husk of his former self. He looked at the corpse of his wife, Ellen called out to him saying she caused this, expecting some kind of attention from her father. Instead, her father was overwhelmed by grief and wailed at the sight of his wife, Ellen completely baffled and enraged, kills her father in a blind fury as her despair grew too much for her. Ellen stumbled a bit after realizing what she had done and a strong wind from the window in her father's room knocked down his lit pipe, causing her house to burn down. His soul's "remains" are found in a cell next to his wife's, where he is still addicted to using his pipe, which causes Ellen to feel a bit sad.

Black Cat

The Black Cat is a demon that possesses corpses of black cats that gave Ellen her powers in exchange for feeding it human souls (albeit unintentionally at first) and bares a similar appearance to a cat that Ellen buried sometime before their first meeting. After the murder of her parents by her own hands and accidentally burning down her house, Ellen escaped on foot before collapsing due to fatigue and meeting the Black Cat demon for the very first time. The Black Cat gave praise to Ellen for giving him two souls to feast on, and gave her an ultimatum, becoming a witch or die in the alleyway. Not having much of a choice Ellen became the witch of a house in a far off land. Taking a liking to Ellen, he made sure to make her feel comfortable inside the mansion by giving her new clothing, complementing her looks, and even taught her to read and write. The first time Ellen wanted to make a friend, the Black Cat agreed to let her with hidden intent, everything went well until her friend wanted her to play outside of the mansion grounds, and despite the warnings of the Black Cat, she took a step outside the mansion, the illusion of her health all but vanished, scaring of her friend. Upon being distraught that her illness did not go away, Ellen in a fit of rage tried killing the Black Cat for being tricked into accepting the role of the witch, but the Black Cat makes it clear to her that she is not the one with power in their dynamic. The Black Cat promised Ellen that he would teach her a spell to get her a healthy body in due time, but she would have to earn it by feeding him and the house more souls. Even though the Black Cat has the power in the dynamic, he still respects Ellen as he is her witch, as when Ellen sacrifices her first friend to the house, what can be inferred as the true body of the demon appears in front of Ellen and finalizes the contract between they and Ellen. Ellen decided to learn some of the same spells that the Black Cat knew (accusing him of hiding it, with him taking insult to the accusation) as she grew bored of the house's traps due to being alive for a long time by this time. Ellen makes a remark about being annoyed at the fact that she cannot come close to understanding how demons like the Black Cat operate. The Black Cat's actions and mannerisms have turned Ellen into antagonistic towards him, which leads to her throwing him into a river of poison without a second thought. Upon being "killed" by a man with a sword and her body coming back together with minor injuries, she discovered she could not die normally and that the Black Cat failed to reveal to her earlier that there is a way she can die, she was furious as he kept that for himself, becoming wary of the Black Cat as she thought he does not care about her living or dying as he was after her soul in the end of everything. Over the course of numerous years, the Black Cat decided that Ellen was ready to learn the body-switching spell and has found the perfect host, alongside the dangerous medicines that were meant for damage to the human body, both Ellen and the Black Cat decide to enact their plan. Upon the body-switch spell, the Black Cat decides to help Ellen one last time by acting as a guide in case she ever needs it, (though implied that she did not ever need it due to being well acquainted with the house and is a bit upset about Ellen leaving him). After helping Ellen escape from the mansion, he and her part ways as the contract becomes void, he not really caring about what happens to Ellen and does not imagine her life to go well back as a normal human.

Black Crow

The Black Crow is a demon that possesses corpses of black crows, trading medicine that slows down Ellen's condition by checking the inside of her body and bringing the appropriate medicine she requires. Ellen does not think highly of the crow as she thinks its too noisy and hiding the fact that they might have a medicine that can cure them of their disease, leaving it up to the Black Cat to find a cure on his own. The Black Crow answers a question Ellen had about curing people if they were just going to eat them, and explained that eating sick humans are like eating sick pigs, but that they also like to play with their food before eating them . Additionally, the Black Crow likes to peek into Ellen's diary without her knowing and leaves before Ellen can do anything about it. The last time Ellen sees the Black Crow is a while after she got defenestrated out of her room and her heart wounded upon seeing her illness, giving her bad news that her disease would continue to progress despite any medicine, giving her an unusual look before flying off with his usual attitude for the last time.

The Mansion

The Mansion is effectively another extension of Ellen's body as she can use it to control objects, rooms, etcetera. As it is part of Ellen too, it can read her thoughts and cause it to change/conjure things Ellen wishes to do. It is alive and enjoys to eat humans as much as other demons do. The Black Cat makes mention that the previous witch of the house decided to help out Ellen with her wish, becoming the spell that helped Ellen become a witch.

Unnamed Boy and Countless Others

Ellen finds her first friend using her magic viewing ability and manipulates the forest so that the boy would accidentally stumble across her house. At first, Ellen and the boy played around inside the mansion grounds, but the boy grew bored and encouraged Ellen to go outside the mansion (despite Ellen being warned multiple times by the Black Cat). Upon leaving the front door of the mansion, Ellen's illness returned, scaring off the boy leaving Ellen to writhe in pain outside. The boy returned the next day to apologize for running away, thinking she looked like a "monster," which hurt Ellen's feelings causing her to lock him into a dark room, and unintentionally letting the house kill and feed on his remains. After this, Ellen decides to continue befriending more children and people, killing them and feeding them to the house as well.

Viola

Ellen "befriends" Viola by luring her into her mansion and posing an ill, bedridden, lonely little girl. Being the target of Ellen's eventual body-switching spell, Ellen relied on her ailment and appearance to gain the trust of Viola and with the confirmation of Viola having a loving father, Ellen knew she found the perfect person. Since the body-switching spell required consent from the second-party, Ellen waited for Viola to either say it unintentionally or intentionally before enacting her plan, which eventually happened, causing the spell to work in the end. Before the spell worked, Ellen mutilated her body in order for Viola to experience her pain and eventually die off, getting rid of Viola and her old body. Viola in terror of what Ellen might do to her father, decided to use the magic that resided in her old body to trap Ellen and force her to give her original body back.
