Background

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Black Cat’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

Black Cat refers to the demon that possess the body of black cats and is the mentor of the witch, Ellen. His origin is shrouded in mystery, with the Black Cat only remembering being a newborn in a home in a snowy place, with his mother murdered. His anger turned into an appetite for humans, being guided by a demon who possessed the bodies of dead crows. The Black Cat found Ellen on the streets of the slums in which she lived in, seemingly ready to end her life after murdering her parents. He stops her by calling out, and thanking her for providing two souls for him to eat (those being Ellen's parents). He spent a short bit explaining to Ellen how demons feast, but cut to the chase and gave an offer to Ellen as a form of thanks for the meal, which would get her out of the cold. Ellen agreed to the offer as she had nothing left in the place she called home. He teleports Ellen and himself to a mansion far away.

Once in the mansion, he gave Ellen the powers of a witch, hiding her condition as long as she stayed within the house's walls, while also giving her a new change of clothes. He showed her the many new amenities that she had never seen or tried before, items like tea and roses. He eased her into the role of a witch by getting to know the inhabitants of the mansion, trying to get things to her liking. Upon showing her the library of the mansion, the Black Cat realized that Ellen was illiterate and offered to teach her how to read and write. Ellen grew bored of the inhabitants of the mansion, as they were imitations of people and had no sense of humanity that would cease her loneliness, and longed for a human friend, so she requested the Black Cat for one. The Black Cat proceeded to teach Ellen an ability called "Magic Viewing" which allowed her to witness and observe everywhere within the mansion's surroundings, including the forest it found itself in. Ellen struggles with the spell at first, but the Black Cat makes a remark of magic being easier to use once the house "gets better." Ellen eventually found a young boy and lead her into her house, causing the Black Cat to disappear. After a long day of Ellen and the young boy playing, the Black Cat was on the roof of the house talking to a black crow, possibly talking about the Ellen's new friend, which he hoped something happened sooner than later.

The next day rolled around, and the young boy encouraged Ellen to go outside the house, despite the Black Cat's warnings. She obliges, and as soon as she steps out, her illness comes back and scares the boy off. The Black Cat goes up to Ellen screaming in pain, chastising her for leaving the mansion, to which Ellen accuses him of lying. The Black Cat negates the accusation, telling her that he never promised to get rid of her sickness, making her feel worse by explaining that despite being immortal, she will eventually succumb to ailments of her disease. This infuriates Ellen, almost yelling out that she wished she would have died, which the Black Cat finished her sentence for her. He shook his head, detailing how much he had helped Ellen out, calling her ungrateful. He blames her for not knowing the extent of her unhappiness and feelings. In a fit of boiling rage, Ellen manifests a knife and tries to kill the Black Cat, which does not do anything to him, not even moving out of the way. Knowing Ellen lashing out was due to Ellen's deep desire, he pushed her over and pressed on her injuries to get her to speak them out, not caring that she was in pain. He then manipulated Ellen by telling her that nobody loved her and she pushed everyone away with her disease. Ellen in despair, wailed, which confirmed the Black Cat's words, causing him to let Ellen know he had a spell to cure her of her disease. Seeing Ellen light up at his words, he then laid out the contract, asking Ellen to feed him just as she did before, but now, utilizing the house to her ability, telling her that he would do anything she desired as she was his witch. The boy returned the next day and inadvertently got killed by Ellen using the power of the mansion. The true body of the demon, who might as well be the Black Cat's, appears before her, eating the soul of the boy, and welcoming Ellen as its beloved witch.

Ever since Ellen followed her role of being the witch, the Black Cat assisted her with any questions she had, even questioning Ellen if she let people go on purpose, as she had gotten the reputation of being called a "witch" by normal people that end up in the mansion. Ellen just wanting her end of the deal fulfilled, insistently asked the Black Cat how much longer she had before she got access to the spell, to which he always delayed. The Black Cat then served the role of being under the power of Ellen, as she was the witch, despite her knowing the roles were nothing but for the demon's amusement. The Black Cat eventually shows the method of how Ellen can die, showing no concern as whether she chooses to die or not. The Black Cat explains to Ellen that because she had her "head" cut and "killed" by a man with a sword, people would stop to come to the mansion frequently, which would allow her to fade away from people's minds. He proceeds to tell her about the previous witch, noting that she is the spell that he gave to Ellen in order to be a witch. After a long while of Ellen killing more people, the Black Cat decided to wake her up and teach her a body-swapping spell as a reward for all the souls he received over the years. He shows her a girl by the name of Viola.

The Black Cat lures Viola deep into the forest while she was in there, by pretending to be a normal cat. Viola being curious followed him all the way to the mansion. He then proceeded to go through many rooms before standing next to the door that would lead Viola to Ellen's room. Since then, the Black Cat occasionally appeared when Viola left, usually responding negatively to her presence, being jealous of her spending time with Ellen. Eventually, once the body-switching spell is cast, the Black Cat stops all acting, and tells Viola of Ellen's plan, calling her a liar for only hanging out with Ellen due to pity, and being glad she would finally pass away.

Once Ellen swapped bodies with Viola, she is trapped from leaving the mansion's grounds due to the rose vines created by Viola. The Black Cat decided to tag along with Ellen one last time, helping her save her position in case she ever fell to one of the many traps found within the mansion. After Ellen escapes, the Black Cat is seen consuming the soul of Viola after she is killed by her father. The Black Cat reflects on his interest of Ellen, being intrigued and falling in love with the color of her soul. He mentions feeling proud of her after she fulfilled her part of the deal, but noted that she would not longer interest him anymore now in case she were to ever come back to him or not.

Appearance


The Black Cat is a demon that possesses the bodies of dead black cat and always has golden eyes[3]. Occasionally, he is shown to make expressions impossible for normal cats.


Though not explicitly confirmed, a demon is shown in the novel to be something like a flexible purple mist, with faces appearing and disappearing quickly, looking otherworldly[4]. This may very well be the Black Cat's true form as no other demon is found to live in the mansion.

Personality

  • Appreciative Little Demon: When a little girl by the name of Ellen killed her parents, he was able to feast on their souls and felt content. To show thanks to her, he offered her a chance to improve her life by becoming a witch, even if he gave her not much of a choice in the matter[3]. He changed Ellen's raggedy clothing with fancier ones, complimenting her appearance[5]. After learning the Ellen was illiterate, he made sure to teach her how to read and write in a calm matter[5]. Though unconfirmed if the Black Cat is the Demon who Ellen sees after sacrificing her first victim to the mansion, the Demon shows itself to be content with Ellen, kissing her hand and calling her their beloved witch[4].
  • Deceptive Little Cat: The Black Cat often withholds information from Ellen, only giving her the information she needs when explicitly asked. He seemingly obliges to Ellen's requests, only for him to wait for an unfortunate event to happen so he can explain to Ellen why she cannot do what she wants without his help and requires her to continue killing people in order to for her to have her spell fulfilled, essentially manipulating her for his own benefit[6]. In his monologue, he notes that he became fascinated with Ellen, wanting her all to himself, seeing her soul was a beautiful color that was losing its luster when put in the world of humans. Since she got her wish fulfilled, he laments that he will no longer care about Ellen anymore[7].
  • Jealous: When Ellen finds Viola as the perfect person to swap bodies with, she took away time from Ellen and him to spend time together. Despite it only being a farce, the Black Cat was put in a bad mood with Viola around, usually greeting her with low meows and staring at her[8]. He makes his feelings known eventually, once the body-swapping spell is in effect, constantly questioning Viola for her friendly behavior towards Ellen, calling her a liar and denying her answers[9].

Former Witch

There is not much known about the former witch that resided in the mansion, but the Black Cat was the one who turned her into a witch. The Black Cat had a neutral opinion on her, but stated that she became a hassle to handle, and eventually decided to grant her wish of becoming the spell for the next witch that the Black Cat brought back[10].

Black Crow

The Black Cat was saved by the Black Crow, guiding him into becoming a demon after his mother was murdered as a newborn[7]. They often talk to each other on the ceiling of the mansion, relating to matters about the Black Cat's witch[11]. They occasionally fight, doing bodily harm to the bodies they inhabit[12].

Ellen

Ellen was saved by the Black Cat after she murdered her family and escaped into the night, granting Ellen a warm place and a home due to her giving him two souls to feast on[3]. The Black Cat conveys to Ellen that he relies on her to feed him as demons themselves cannot harm people. After teleporting Ellen back to the mansion, he made sure to change her rags to fancier clothes and compliments her looks, much to Ellen's disbelief[5]. Ellen being happy with her new home and new found freedom had to be reminded by the Black Cat that she is unable to leave the house she resides due to being a witch. He makes sure to ease Ellen into the life of a witch at first, not overwhelming her and making sure to respond any questions she had. The Black Cat teaches Ellen how to read and write after learning she was illiterate, never raising his voice or chastising her. While Ellen was ignorant of the way the mansion worked or her status as a witch, the Black Cat did not deem it necessary to teach her until she experienced the consequences of her actions[11]. When Ellen left the mansion despite the Black Cat's warning, she became angry with him, believing he had twisted his words to trick her into accepting the role of the witch. He does not take this accusation lightly, calmly and coldly reminding her place, and telling her she will get her wish if he just does what he requests, which is getting people killed, so he can feed on their souls[6]. Though it is unknown if the Demon that Ellen witnesses after her first kill as the witch is the Black Cat, it is very proud of Ellen, kissing her hand and welcoming their beloved witch to the house[4]. When Ellen asks a question about the Black Crow to the Black Cat, he evades answering any questions to him, as he only has interest on her, much to annoyance of Ellen[13]. While the Black Cat still remains interested and has a positive opinion of Ellen, she does not feel the same, knowing that she is being used, only giving him attention when she needs something. The Black Cat reveals to Ellen she can die, which causes her opinion of him to decrease, but he asserts his indifference to Ellen dying or not, as he only seems to care about Ellen's soul[10]. After being satisfied with the amount of souls he had consumed, he finally decided to allow Ellen to learn his body-swapping spell[14], helping Ellen out with carrying out the plan by luring a blonde girl by the name of Viola into the mansion[15]. Once the body-swapping took effect, he decides to tag alongside Ellen one last time, helping her restore time to a previous point if she were to get injured. After Ellen leaves the mansion for good, the Black Cat remarks his loss of interest for her, noting that he noticed she was nearing her limit when he gave her the body-swapping spell, and being sorry he would not care about Ellen as much as he did before[7].


Viola

The Black Cat has had a negative view of Viola from the start, not particularly caring what happens to her. He first scouts her out as the perfect person for Ellen to swap bodies with, and lures her into the mansion to meet Ellen[15]. As Viola's visits become more frequent, he usually responds to her calls with low meows[16], or staring her down in silence[8], indicating a dislike of her. Once the body-swapping spell began working, he broke the act of acting as a regular cat, and questioned Viola's motivations of becoming friends with Ellen. Viola not knowing how to respond to this question, causes him to accuse her of feeling sorry for her and only being friends with her because of her selfish emotions. Viola denies this, which causes him to tell her that Ellen will die, noticing a subtle change in Viola's face, calls her out for feeling relief at Ellen's death, saying that she is a bad person. He proceeds to call her a liar, noting that nothing can be done about her situation as she already consent to the body-swapping spell[9].
