Background
Joe Shimamura (島村ジョー, Shimamura Jō), also known as Cyborg 009 is the eponymous main protagonist of the anime/manga series Cyborg 009, written and illustrated by Shotaro Ishinomori, who was also known for his work on series such as Kamen Rider, Kikaider and Super Sentai, which became Power Rangers. Among his works, Cyborg 009 is one of the most popular and influential, as it was the first manga in Japan to have a team of super-powered heroes, in addition to the fact that all the characters were of different races.
Joe is an orphaned, half-Japanese 18 year old who was captured by the crime organization, Black Ghost. There, he was experimented on by the chief scientists and was converted into a Cyborg, with the intents of using Joe, as one of nine prototypes, in order to create their own race of Cyborg Soldiers. However, Joe and the other prototypes were able to escape with the help of Doctor Gilmore, a scientist who was tricked into helping Black Ghost. Joe Shimamura, labeled as 009, would fight alongside eight other of his Cyborg "siblings" against Black Ghost and any other organization which may threaten peace on the Earth.
Statistics
Tier: 7-A, Higher while in Acceleration Mode
Name: Joe Shimamura, Cyborg 009
Origin: Cyborg 009
Sex: Male
Age: 18 physically, over 60 due to not aging
Classification: Cyborg, 00-Numbered Cyborg, Hero
Alignment: Neutral Good (As a 00-Numbered Cyborg, Joe fights for justice and will always rise up to destroy whatever evil happens to appear in the world. However, while Joe has worked with the government on many occasions, he and the other Cyborgs more often than not operate outside of the law, which can lead to conflicts between the Cyborgs and the governments of the world, notably during Call of Justice, where the United Nation's Guardians were tailing the Cyborgs through the entire series. Despite these conflicts, Joe is undoubtedly good natured, and a hero by many standards.)
Dimensionality: 3-D
Attack Potency: Mountain level (Comparable to his durability, as he can fight against and defeat enemies that can damage him. Fought against, staggered, and withstood direct attacks from Queen Himiko, who could telekinetically cause massive tsunamis and huge earthquakes all across Tokyo. Fought against Cyborg 0013, who would have sank all of Tokyo.), Higher while in Acceleration Mode (Acceleration Mode doubles the force of Joe's attacks.)
Durability: Mountain level (Survived falling into a direct volcano explosion that destroyed the entire island he was fighting on, and was later seen as being completely fine afterwards. Was able to withstand attacks from Queen Himiko.), Higher while in Acceleration Mode (Can survive his own incredible speed while in Acceleration Mode. Has fought against and survived attacks from enemies that also have Accelerators comparable to Joe's.)
Striking Strength: Mountain level, Higher while in Acceleration Mode
Lifting Strength: Class 100 (Can lift and swing around heavy metal robots much larger than him. Has comparable strength to Cyborg 005/Geronimo Jr., who can lift and toss tanks.)
Travel Speed: Hypersonic without the Accelerator (Shown to be even in speed, if not faster than Cyborg 002/Jet Link without the usage of his Accelerator. Jet Link can fly at Mach 5. Joe can move faster than the human eye can track.), FTL+ while in Acceleration Mode (Dodged reflected sunlight multiple times with ease. A literal blink of an eye lasted for around ten days in his perspective while in Acceleration Mode, where he once spent an entire month in the time it took for a gas explosion to go off.). Instantaneous with Teleportation. Extra-Temporal with the True Accelerator (Ran so fast he reversed time with his speed, and potentially could have traveled back to the time before he was a Cyborg. Traveled to the future to see the Emperor's fate.)
Combat Speed: Hypersonic without the Accelerator, Lightspeed with the Supergun (The Supergun has a laser function. It is confirmed to be real due to the fact that it fires in straight lines, bounces off of reflective surfaces, and causes metal surfaces to heat up rather than explode.) FTL+ while in Acceleration Mode (Can fight and react to things with ease while in Acceleration Mode. While time may appear frozen for Joe, allowing him to act and move around normally, it in reality is him moving at incredibly high speeds and perceiving the world as frozen). Extra-Temporal with the True Accelerator
Reaction Speed: Hypersonic without the Accelerator, FTL+ while in Acceleration Mode (The Accelerator "overclocks" Joe's reaction times and his brain's processing speeds, allowing him to react just as fast as he moves while in Acceleration Mode.). Extra-Temporal with the True Accelerator
Stamina: Limitless (Is a Cyborg and was designed to be able to keep fighting even after sustaining massive amounts of damage. Can use his Accelerator without any kind of time limit or exhaust.)
Range: Standard Melee range, higher with the Supergun
Intelligence: Extraordinary Genius (As Joe has been fighting for years, he is an incredible fighter despite his little on-screen formal combat training. He has been able to soundly defeat a number of foes with far more experience than him, such as trained assassins, high ranking Black Ghost officials such as Skull, and in particular, the Emperor, who had over 3,000 years of experience. He regularly finds ways to locate and exploit the weaknesses in his opponents using all of his skills. Joe has shown himself to be an incredible marksman, such as when he shot down missiles from the sky and even miniscule flies out of the air. Joe is also quite proficient in a variety of vehicles. Examples include Joe being a famed racecar driver, piloting experimental military planes, advanced submarines, and is even stated to be the best pilot amongst the 00-Cyborgs.)

The Supergun in the 2001 series, firing the Heat Ray
- Supergun: The Supergun is the primary weapon utilized by the Cyborg Soldiers, taken from Black Ghost. It is an incredibly advanced weapon with numerous settings for various combat situations.
- Usually, the main three settings are a powerful heat ray, an emitter of poisonous gas, and a normal gun function. However, it has also been known to act as a laser, needle cannon, fire tranquilizer darts, a stun beam, an energy magnum and a freezer ray.
- In addition to the other functions, the Supergun has a laser function. It is confirmed to be real due to the fact that it fires in straight lines, bounces off of reflective surfaces, and causes metal surfaces to heat up rather than explode.
- The Supergun is notably powerful, as shots from the Heat Ray function in particular have been able to achieve a variety of feats. Even single shots from the weapon have been known to wreck planes, helicopters, futuristic UFOs, and even a statue that doubled as a rocket, and thus could survive atmospheric reentry.
- After being upgraded during Conclusion: GOD'S WAR, the Supergun became powerful enough to destroy "Gods" in a single strike. The "Gods" could summon tidal waves and create earthquakes across Tokyo.

-
Joe running fast enough to reverse time with the True Accelerator (Call of Justice anime)
-
Joe seeing the Emperor's future fate and running past the event horizon (Call of Justice anime)
- Acceleration Mode: Joe's main ability that he was given by Black Ghost's experiments. When activated, it makes Joe much faster than his normal speeds, causing everything in his perspective to slow to an absolute crawl. The sheer air friction produced by Joe causes most things that he touches while in Acceleration Mode to burn up. Due to moving so quickly while in Acceleration Mode, he cannot hear anything, as he is exponentially faster than sound.
- Acceleration Mode has been upgraded several times throughout Joe's career as a Cyborg:
- Acceleration Mode was initially activated by Joe turning on a switch in his back molar with his tongue, but since it was upgraded in Conclusion: GOD'S WAR, he no longer needed to switch it on and could simply will himself into Acceleration Mode.
- After an upgrade, during the episode Frozen Time, Joe had his Accelerator Switch stuck, and thus spent an entire month in his perspective in the instant before a gas explosion could even move. During which, Joe was able to walk and even stand perfectly still on water before the effects of gravity could take hold on him.
- During the events of Conclusion: GOD'S WAR, Joe's Accelerator granted him instantaneous movement, allowing Joe to teleport.
- When he gained an upgrade through Ivan Whisky/Cyborg 001's psychic powers, Joe learned to use his Acceleration Mode in a more offensive way, and he gained the ability to destroy beings on a molecular level by speeding them up fast enough.
- After witnessing Francoise Arnoul/Cyborg 003's death at the hands of a Guardian Soldier's bullet during the events of Call of Justice, Joe's Accelerator reached a new level, called the True Accelerator, the final and most powerful upgrade to the Accelerator by far, granting Joe Extra-Temporal speed. By running fast enough and using his incredible speed, Joe could directly affect the flow of time with his speed, being capable of reversing time, time-traveling to the future, and dimensional travel. He could have potentially changed his past and became human again, but chose not to. Using the True Accelerator, he was able to undo 003's death, learn how the Emperor lost against the 00-Cyborgs, and take himself and the Emperor into a dimension beyond the event horizon.

Other
Standard Tactics: Joe usually starts off his fights by switching into Acceleration Mode almost immediately and going for a Speed Blitz. If his sheer speed isn't enough to defeat his opponent, Joe combines his combat experience along with his Accelerator to find ways to outsmart his opponents or find and exploit weaknesses. He regularly employs the Supergun while fighting, in addition to utilizing his excellent hand-to-hand combat skills if necessary.
Weaknesses: Joe cannot hear anything while in Acceleration Mode unless it is through telepathy, due to the fact that he moves so much faster than sound. He cannot move any ordinary human while in Acceleration Mode, as the air friction and sheer speed would cause them either to burn up (if flammable) or have the flesh ripped off their skeleton and die almost immediately. This applies to most objects that cannot withstand Joe's speed, with the exception of things that are durable enough to survive the high velocities such as metal objects (which even then, become incredibly hot due to the friction), or other Cyborgs (although once Joe reaches high enough speeds, it is implied that even other Cyborgs would not be able to withstand it.). He usually will not kill a human unless absolutely necessary.
Note: The main reason why many of the fights in Cyborg 009 did not end with Joe utterly blitzing his foes is due to the fact that many of his opponents were Cyborgs who also had Accelerators built into their bodies. Even if he was unable to blitz them, Joe did always try to use his Accelerator first.
