~ MegaMan.EXE during Mega Man Battle Network 6 |
Background
MegaMan.EXE, known as Rockman.EXE in Japan, is the titular main protagonist of the Mega Man Battle Network series and NetNavi operated by Lan Hikari. Together, they're a powerful NetBattling and virus busting duo that has saved the world many times over. He is sometimes called as just Mega, or Rock in Japan.
MegaMan is Lan's twin brother, Hub Hikari, known as Saito Hikari in Japan, who died shortly after birth, because of a rare heart condition that is known as HBD. His father, Yuichiro Hikari, then used Hub's data to revive him as a NetNavi, MegaMan.EXE.

MegaMan is a unique NetNavi in the fact that he is the ultimate result of the Navi Project, an experiment undertaken by all of SciLab and led by Yuichiro Hikari. The Navi Project was designed to successfully graft a human's DNA and soul into a NetNavi. The process took a NetNavi's data and made it able to adapt to almost any situation. Yuichiro was only able to create about 95% of the actual project but no further when he and his wife had two children: twins Lan and Hub. Hub was quickly diagnosed with HBD and died shortly after birth. To keep Hub's soul alive, Mr. Hikari decided to use Hub's DNA to create MegaMan.EXE and gave the Navi to Lan. As Lan and Hub were identical twins, Lan and MegaMan developed a brotherly bond perfecting Yuichiro's Navi project. However, it was presumed that if Hub's exact DNA were to be used, the twins would sense each others' internal and external pain. As such, Dr. Hikari had modified Hub's DNA by .001%. This remaining .001% was programmed into the Hub.bat. if the need to reset Hub's DNA to the original was necessary. Largely because of how he had originally died, MegaMan.EXE was also able to instantly recognize the symptoms of HBD, which is evident by his meeting Mamoru Ura at Seaside Hospital. Throughout the games, MegaMan is used by Lan to NetBattle and communicate with his friends' NetNavis. MegaMan also gains a plethora of transformations, some of them even had him "make a deal with the devil", accessing abilities that makes his powerful but go out of control. In Mega Man Battle Network 2, Lan and MegaMan traveled to YumSquare and took a special data called Change.bat. Yuichiro uses it to create a new program for MegaMan, the Style Change transformation, starting the path of MegaMan undergoing form changes. In the game's finale, Lan's body is knocked out in the real world, but miraculously his consciousness reached the cyberworld and has fused with MegaMan's. By putting his "heart program" into full synch, Lan is able to operate MegaMan and send chips using his heart, without any physical connections. In Mega Man Battle Network 3, sometime after Lan joins minds with MegaMan through the Pulse Transmission System, they're captured by a part of Alpha. In a desperate attempt, MegaMan builds up his energy to overload and explode an opening for Lan to escape. At that point, MegaMan was considered dead, and as he's part human, he cannot be restored like other Navis... Later Yuichiro discovers, after decoding the note given to him by his late father, that Alpha had an area that even itself couldn't reach. From that data pocket of safety, he's able to bring back MegaMan. In Mega Man Battle Network 4, in order to defeat ShadeMan, a Navi they couldn't damage no matter what they try, Lan and MegaMan resorted to using a Dark Chip. This chip's evil Dark Power dwells within MegaMan even after the physical chip itself has been destroyed. His enemies afterwards continue to extract this Dark Soul and pit it as against him, to remind MegaMan the dark strength that exists within. Throughout the game he's thrusted into many strange scenarios as he and Lan participates in tournaments. Notables ones include getting his consciousness pulled out of his body and have JunkMan possess his body, and Eugene Chaud operating him to bring back an out of control ProtoMan. In Mega Man Battle Network 5, Nebula captures MegaMan after the SciLab 3 Liberation Mission with the intention of turning him into the dark warrior, Dark MegaMan. MegaMan eventually overcomes his darkness thanks to Lan's voice and retakes his body. In the game's finale, as MegaMan is overwhelmed by the Dark Power from Dr. Regal, Tadashi Hikari's ghostly voice echoes, stating Lan and MegaMan has a powerful link. A miracle occurs and MegaMan transforms into a spiritual silhouette of Hub Hikari. Hub quickly takes care of the Dark Power with a blast from his hand. He quickly exhausted his power and turns back to MegaMan. This was only a momentary victory as the Dark Power quickly regenerates itself. In Mega Man Battle Network 6, after the Cybeast is released from their prison and wreaks havoc, Lan and Mega take it upon themselves to lessen the damage on the Net. When encountering the Cybeast, MegaMan utilizes the ExaMemory, a program that increased his memory capacity, to seal away the Cybeast. Despite Lan and his father's warnings, he goes ahead and does it. This ruins MegaMan's body and time to time, he will involuntarily Beast Out and have the Cybeast power go wild. This continuously forced Lan to operate other Navis to try and rescue MegaMan from himself. In the game's finale, the Cybeast is extracted from him. |

Attack Chips
Cannons
Cannon Series
- Cannon: Known as LaserBlast in English dub, known as Blaster in the 20th episode of MegaMan NT Warrior Axess, is the most basic form, being Chip #001 in every game and appearing in every starting folder in the series. It always deals 40 damage.
- High Cannon: Shortened to HiCannon, known as HiBlaster in the 20th episode of MegaMan NT Warrior Axess, is the second chip. It deals 80 damage in the first, fourth, and fifth games, and in Network Transmission; 60 damage in BN2-3; and 100 damage in BN6.
- Mega Cannon: Shortened to M-Cannon, known as MegaBlaster in the 20th episode of MegaMan NT Warrior Axess, is the third and strongest chip. It deals 120 damage in the first, fourth, and fifth games, and in Network Transmission; 80 damage in BN2-3; and 180 damage in BN6.
- Dark Cannon: A Dark Chip that appeared in Mega Man Battle Network 4. Its damage dealt is equal to the difference between your current and maximum HP, similar to an unrestricted ranged Muramasa. However, as with all Dark Chips, it causes a bug after being selected, and this one drops all of MegaMan's Buster Stats to 1.
- Cannon Mode: A Battle Chip from Rockman.EXE 4.5 Real Operation that makes the NetNavi use Cannon several times.
Program Advances
- Zeta/Omega-Cannon: Zeta Cannon, shortened to Z-Canon, known as ZetaBlaster in the 20th episode of MegaMan NT Warrior Axess, is a family of Program Advances in the first three Mega Man Battle Network games and Mega Man Network Transmission created by combining Cannon chips in three consecutive chip codes out of five. Z-Canon1 is formed with Cannons from the codes of A, B, C, D, and E in all three games. Z-Canon2 is formed with three High Cannons, with code sets of (F, G, H, I, J), (C, D, E, F, G), and (H, I, J, K, L) in game order. Z-Canon3 is formed with Mega-Cannons, with code sets (K, L, M, N, O), (E, F, G, H, I), and (O, P, Q, R, S). The Z-Canon in Mega Man Network Transmission is created by using Cannon, HiCannon, and M-Cannon. The Advances grant five seconds of invisibility and unlimited uses of their component chip during this time. Omega-Cannon, shortened to O-Canon, is an upgraded version in the first two games that uses all five codes in order. Like other Omega PAs, it lasts for 10 seconds instead of 5.
- Powered Cannon: Powered Cannon is formed by combining Shotgun, CrossGun, Spreader, and Mega Cannon in K code, and only appears in the first Mega Man Battle Network. MegaMan summons a massive cannon that hits a 3x3 area on a successful hit.
- Giga Cannon: Giga Cannon is the replacement to Zeta Cannon, and a successor of sorts to the Powered Cannon, introduced in Mega Man Battle Network 4. Instead of gaining the ability to shoot multiple Cannons, it does a single hit of massive damage, and in Mega Man Battle Network 6, it spreads to the 8 panels surrounding the point of impact as well. GigaCan1 is formed from Cannons A, B, and C in all games; GigaCan2 from HiCannons with code sets (C, D, E), (D, E, F), and (L, M, N); and GigaCan3 from M-Cannons with code sets (E, F, G), (G, H, I), and (R, S, T).
Spreader
- Shotgun: Known as Blaster in the English dub of the anime MegaMan NT Warrior, that appears if the first three Mega Man Battle Network games. It is a Battle Chip that fires a projectile straight forward and hits both the target and the square behind it. In the anime, it fires several projectiles from the buster.
- Bubbler: Known as Bubble Shot (バブルショット ) in Japan, is a stronger, Aqua element version of Shotgun that can be obtained from Shrimpy.
- Heat Shot: A stronger, Fire element version of Shotgun that can be obtained from Spikey.
- Bubble-V: A stronger, Aqua element version of V-Gun.
- Heat-V: A stronger, Fire element version of V-Gun.
- Bubble Side: A stronger, Aqua element version of Side Gun.
- Heat Side: A stronger, Fire element version of Side Gun.
- Bubble Cross: A stronger, Aqua element version of Cross Gun.
- Heat Cross: A stronger, Fire element version of Cross Gun.
- Dark Spread: A Dark Chip in Mega Man Battle Network 4 that deals 400 damage, but leaves its user a bug that leaves Poison panels when they step off a panel.
- Bubble Spread: Named Bubbler in the English version of the first Mega Man Battle Network game, is an Aqua element version of Spreader, dropped by the Puffy virus.
- Heat Spread: Named Heater in the English version of the first Mega Man Battle Network game, is a Fire element version of Spreader, dropped by the Buffy virus.
- 3-Way: A Battle Chip from Mega Man Network Transmission. Instead of a single shot splitting after hitting the target, it fires buster shots in three directions.

Fire Aura, known as Flame Aura (フレイムオーラ ) in Japan, deflects all attacks doing under 40 damage, and is pierced by Aqua attacks.
Wood Aura (ウッドオーラ ) deflects all attacks doing under 80 damage, and is pierced by Fire attacks.
Elec Aura (エレキオーラ ) deflects all attacks doing under 100 damage, and is pierced by Wood attacks.
Life Aura 1, known as Dream Aura 1 (ドリームオーラ1 ) in Japan, deflects all attacks doing under 100 damage and has no weaknesses. This is the Life Virus's primary form of defense, which is then picked up by Bass.
Life Aura 2 (Dream Aura 2) deflects all attacks doing under 150 damage and has no weaknesses.
Life Aura 3 (Dream Aura 3) deflects all attacks doing under 200 damage and has no weaknesses. From Mega Man Battle Network 3 onwards, variants of Life Aura are done away with, and Life Aura 3 automatically became the only Life Aura (ドリームオーラ , Dream Aura) chip. However, it now has a time limit of aproximately 5-6 turns. It also appears in the first Mega Man Star Force game.
Aura (オーラ ) is simple version of Life Aura 1 in the third game, being yellow instead of purple and deflecting attacks doing under 100 damage. It also appears in the Mega Man Star Force series.
Dark Aura (ダークネスオーラ , Darkness Aura) is a strengthened version of Life Aura, deflecting attacks doing under 300 damage. It is a Dark Chip, requiring a dark hole in the field or the Dark License program to be used. |

Barrier
- Barrier: Serves as shield for the player till it has taken hits that equal 10 or more in one hit that instantly goes over that limit - then it vanishes. In Mega Man Star Force 3 it serves as a shield for the user till it takes one hit, then it vanishes.
- Barrier 100: A stronger Barrier serves as shield for the player till it has taken hits that equal 100 or more - then it vanishes. In Mega Man Star Force 2 and 3 it was renamed as Super Barrier (スーパーバリア , SprBarrier). In Mega Man Star Force 3 it protects the user from five hits, regardless of the amount of damage taken.
- Barrier 200: Serves as shield for the player till it has taken hits that equal 200 or more - then it vanishes.
- Black Barrier: A Giga Chip from Mega Man Battle Network 4 Red Sun and Rockman.EXE 4.5 Real Operation that absorbs all attacks until a threshold of 150 is reached. The barrier will then disappear for exactly 3.1 seconds and then regenerate afterwards. The regeneration can take place independent of the player's status (e.g. the player can get hit by a Vulcan or other multi-hitting battle chip and the Barrier will regenerate regardless of flinching occurring). It is dropped by Bass on Black Earth 2. The only way to permanently disable Black Barrier is Wind Soul's initative Gust upon Double Soul or the North Wind Battle Chip.

These chips do not turn a NetNavi evil in themselves, but like the DS versions of Navi Chips they can only be used by Dark Navis.
All Evil Chips are present in Rockman.EXE 4.5 Real Operation, but they are no longer considered Evil Chips, the user being free to use them without these requirements. Although some were made than their original BN4 chips.Mega Man Battle Network 4

- MegaMan's Navi mark was based on the letter "H", Hikari's initial.[3] It stands for Hikari Labs, and is a tilted H with a line through it.[4]
- MegaMan's eyes are green, but in the first three Mega Man Battle Network games his mugshot shows him with blue eyes. In Mega Man Battle Network 6, the sprite used for walking in the cyberworld make his eyes look blue. However, his battle sprite has brown eyes, but his mugshot shows that his eyes are green which is their true color.
- MegaMan.EXE, makes a cameo appearance in the first Mega Man Star Force game in one of the side quests. If the player completed the side quest and returned the "SciLab" data for MegaMan.EXE, he will make a short appearance from the portal and gives Geo the "BNBlaster", or "Battle Network Blaster".
- He has unused overworld sprites in Mega Man Star Force 2 and 3.
- In Mega Man Star Force 2, Lan's diary entries can be obtained through side quests. One entry reveals that Patch, Lan's son from the epilogue of Mega Man Battle Network 6, had his own NetNavi: MegaMan Junior, a program combining the best qualities of MegaMan and Roll, making Junior the son of both Navis.
- According to concept art, Hub has brown hair. As Navis are actively design to not have "real hair" as stated by Yūji Ishihara,[5] it's unknown of this is the hair under MegaMan's helmet or a digital what-if representation of it. It's of note MegaMan's hair is black and straight, while Hub's is brown and wavy.
- While the Hub hair first appears in Mega Man Battle Network 5, concept art has shown it was designed since the first game's concepts.
- Certain merchandise and official illustrations have taken liberties to make MegaMan's hair brown even if he's not in his Hub look.
- According to Yūji Ishihara, the dominant yellow in MegaMan’s design was picked due to yellow tending to coordinate well with just about any color. It also brought out a sort of florid or showy quality in otherwise simple designs. It was also used it at times to create the impression of gold[6].
- Apparently MegaMan's Style Change, Double Soul, and Cross System aren't unique abilities that only MegaMan can do. Even though any Navi can perform them as long as the conditions are met, the powers are used more efficiently by Lan and MegaMan due to their incredible bond.[7]
- MegaMan.EXE is the only Mega Man in the franchise to have his Mega Buster mainly on the right hand instead of his left. This is notable on the side by side comparison of the Mega Legends in the Super Smash Bros. games.
- Due to the publishing rights for Mega Man Battle Network being held by another company, MegaMan does not appear in the Archie Comics Mega Man series. However, in the Short Circuits for Mega Man Issue 55, a pair of silhouetted figures resembling him and Star Force Mega Man appear behind Mega Man X, Zero, Model A, and a Servbot.
