Background

The Wintertodt is an entity in RuneScape 2 that serves as the boss of the Wintertodt Camp. The player assists a group of pyromancers to subdue the Wintertodt by using their firemaking skill to light the braziers within the prison, allowing the pyromancers to use their magic on the Wintertodt.

While it is not clear what the Wintertodt is, there are multiple theories by various people in the Wintertodt Camp. Ignisia believes it to be an evil spirit, Ish the Navigator believes it felt the power of the Dark Altar and attacked Great Kourend to seek it, while Undor believes it to be a powerful fire spirit.

During the 2nd decade (1,400 years ago), the Wintertodt (known back then as the Winter Beast) ravaged the lands north of Kourend, causing them to experience perpetual winter, with livestock and crops freezing. It continued to ravage the Northern Tundras for another three decades, with Great Kourend's attempts to subdue it unsuccessful.

On 1,778 - 5 (1,360 years ago), fearing the Winter Beast might eventually ravage the kingdom, Lord Arceuus I ordered the construction of the Arceuus Library, filled with texts, documents and research from all cities, in order to preserve the history of Great Kourend. Meanwhile, the most important texts were stored in the Library Historical Archive, a repurposed chamber of the Tower of Magic, for further study and additional protection.

On 1,748 - 7 (1,340 years ago), a master Lovakengj smith named Dinh formulated a plan to defeat the Winter Beast. Meeting with the Order of the Sacred Flame, Dinh believed that the roots of the Bruma tree, a magical tree lying within the heart of the Northern Tundras, can emit the heat required to subdue the Winter Beast. Dinh proposed to construct a large prison in which to lure the Beast in, and seal it with a large set of doors made from various materials, including lovakite and bark from the Bruma tree, with enchantments placed by the Order.

With Lord Lovakengj II approving of the plans, the prison's construction was completed 800 days later, with known casualties of sixteen Order members and two scouts. On 2,548 - 7, after five decades, the Winter Beast was successfully imprisoned and sealed behind the Doors of Dinh, with Lord Lovakengj II declaring the day as Winter's End.

Over a thousand years later, the Doors have begun to fail due to being damaged by someone or something, creating a small hole in the doors. Due to this, the Wintertodt has been drawing a small amount power into the prison. This hole is fixed by Undor during The Forsaken Tower quest after being given Dinh's hammer. Despite this, the doors were already damaged for such a time that the Wintertodt has already gained a lot of power, and Undor believes that it will be many years before things return to normal.

It is later revealed in A Kingdom Divided that the doors were sabotaged by one of the Pyromancers sent to subdue to winter beast, with collusion from Xamphur, Xeric's closest ally. It is not known what interested Xamphur, but during the quest, the Tasakaal create a shielding potion for the adventurer to apply to the doors to prevent further damage.

Able to indefinitely sustain itself, as it had plunged northern Kourend into a state of perpetual winter for three entire decades), Heat Manipulation, Air Manipulation, Ice Manipulation, Weather Manipulation (Exists as a living snow storm. Equipment

None

Notable Techniques

  • Extreme Cold: Players within the prison occasionally take passive damage from the extreme temperatures of the Wintertodt. The frequency of this damage is reduced if three or more braziers are kept lit.
  • Snow Attack: The Wintertodt pelts the target with snow. It will use this both to attack the player directly and to destroy the braziers, which puts the pyromancers into critical condition as they are hit with the shrapnel.

Other

Standard Tactics: The Wintertodt attacks by pelting the player with blasts of snow. Being in the presence of the Wintertodt incurs passive damage due to its extremely cold temperatures.

Weaknesses: Its power is able to be suppressed by the pyromancers. Wood from bruma roots is able to keep it sealed away, as the prison doors were made from it, and the braziers are only able to be lit by them.
