From The Codex
With free will, there will always be conflict, along with tragedy. Free will gives life the potential to commit atrocities, and give into aggression. The world will know no peace, for free will was the greatest mistake of God.
~ The Sleeping Slave

Summary/Backstory

  • (Keep in mind this is still VERY much work in progress, and does represent High Minded Castle in it's entirety. This is a heavily simplified summary/backstory, and does not represent High Minded Castle in it's WHOLE. It's best to take this with a grain of salt.)

Kosuke Susumu, also known by his title "The Sleeping Slave", is the main antagonist of High Minded Castle. He was born into slavery during the Sengoku period of Japan, and from an early age was taught how to use a sword. His position within Date Masamune's army, was very low ranking one, for he any many others were simply used as fodder that would be sent out first to simply wear out the enemy for a bit. Whether they lived or died, was not of concern, for many of them weren't even expected to come back alive. Despite his ranking within the army, he is noted for his "Vastly inhuman strength."

As his life of slavery continued, Kosuke understandably grew ever more hateful and bitter during his time. He and a few others attempted escape on a few occassions, which only ended with them being re-captured, brought back, and made an example of. However during the battle of Sekigahara his life changed forever.

At the battle of Sekigahara, a man who was transparent, and resembled a wandering spirit was spotted, however little record of what occured at Sekigahara exist. What is known, is that Kosuke walked from the ashes of that battlefield, and during that time, and at some point during the battle crossed blades with a woman named Hoshiko.

After Sekigahara Kosuke finally escaped those who enslaved him, and was able to finally go his own path. The woman whom he met at Sekigahara, walked with him, as they had a mutual respect for eachother, leading to a friendship. However, he noticed something extremely off about this woman, something otherworldly. first of all, her eye's didn't resemble that of a human at all, no her pupils were narrow and slit, resembling the predatory look of a snake. Apparently Hoshiko was called a "Demon Child" in her home village. When asked about her parents, she simply can't answer for she was adopted by a Buddhists monk at an age too young to remember. As they traveled Hoshiko would constantly be berated, with some people even attempting to murder her.

They continued travelling together despite the constant conflict, with each of them having their own goal. Hoshiko sought to find out where she truly came from, and Kosuke sought to find any form of meaning in life, while also working to free the people that were still enslaved within his country. The two of them would constantly start riots against the shogunate and their ways, putting huge targets on their back. After having caused much damage to the Shogunate's image, and free'd many of their slaves, things slowly started to change, and turn for the worst.

They both had a "paranormal" experience when they hid out with one of Hoshiko's childhood friends. This friend of Hoshiko's was named Mitsuki, and the two grew ever suspicious about her odd habits. First of all she seemed to never sleep, and pranced about the house during all hours of the night. Secondly the girl kept a locked door leading to some sort of cellar, and when questioned about it, she would avoid the subject all together. One night Hoshiko took a look for herself underneath the cellar door, and what she found shocked her. Dead bodies, various markings and writings in a language unknown to herself. When questioned about the room after having been witnessed, Mitsuki finally confessed that she had accidentally brought a curse upon herself. An unnamed spirit made contact with Mitsuki, and tricked her into drinking from a red river, claiming it would grant immortality. However when she did drink, she WAS granted immortality, however she also gained an unquenchable thirst for blood. Without blood Mitsuki would starve to death eventually.

Mitsuki was like this for apparently her entire childhood up until now. Her reasoning for trusting such a spirit, was that she wanted her and Hoshiko to be together forever. She loved her as more than a friend. As much as Hoshiko felt the same, and wanted to return those feelings, she simply could not. Hoshiko was a woman whom many hated for her differences, and if Mitsuki was seen with her, she would only be harmed as well. They would be chased after for their differences beyond their control. Despite being a former slave, at this point Kosuke started develop a philosophy against free will. For as long as free will could exist, peace could not he thought to himself. Free will is why Hoshiko and the one she loves would be chased after, constantly fighting for their lives. Those humans had the free will to hate, and take out aggression.

The same being that was recorded having appeared at Sekigahara came to Kosuke in his dreams. He claimed to have known Kosuke's grievances with the world, and offered him power. Kosuke questioned his motives, with the being refusing to answer. Kosuke reluctantly took the power he was offered, and ascended to what seemed to be godhood. When he woke up he displayed his power to Hoshiko who was in complete shock. Kosuke was controlling the minds of all who had hated her, all who wanted her dead, now bowed before her. He expressed his ideals of free will, and even controlled the mind of Mitsuki, hoping this power and ideal would further push Hoshiko to join Kosuke. To Kosuke's dismay, Hoshiko was in absolute despair and horror that the one she love no longer had any free will. She was a soulless puppet, with Kosuke manning the strings. When Hoshiko turned against him, Kosuke attempted to his power to control Hoshiko's mind, but for some reason it failed. Hoshiko was immune to his mind control, and struck him with her blade. However the blade broke over Kosuke's body, for his power was much greater. Hoshiko was still a friend to him, and he hoped to be able to turn her some other way, so for now he allowed her to live.

Kosuke continued sweeping the world with his powers, making all humans under his command. He eventually after having heightened his perception enough, would see past the facade of the earth's sky, and the eye looking down a them. There was life other than mere humans in existence, and Kosuke challenged the eye staring down at him. With his might he struck down the watching eye, and broke through the barrier that kept him from leaving the planet.

They say his power was rising to levels comparable to that of The Great Myth, Amaterasu Omikami. He kept surpassing the infinitely layered world, beyond all dimensionsal time-space. In his ascent to the more primal reaches of the world, it was there he learned of a being named "Gridlith", and The High Minded Kings. He learned of their power to bend totality to their will, and the ascension of Buddha into "Nirvana".

Kosuke moved past the strands of Gridlith, and it was here he once again met Hoshiko, who had come back and was less human than ever. With their opposite, and conflicting ideals they did battle with eachother, eventually resulting in Kosuke's death.

Appearance

Kosuke is a tall man, with long flowing hear, and a clean shaven face.

Personality

Kosuke while very cynical, is a very philosophical man. Often do his thoughts run rampant through his mind, comparing ideals, and starting dialectics with himself. Outwardly he tries to be a kind hearted individual, however with his views on free will, he is a very misguided person.
