European Hedgehog

From The Codex

Background

The European Hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus), also known as the West European hedgehog or common hedgehog, is a hedgehog species native to Europe from Iberia and Italy northwards into Scandinavia and westwards into the British Isles. It is a generally common and widely distributed species that can survive across a wide range of habitat types. It is a well-known species, and a favourite in European gardens, both for its endearing appearance and its preference for eating a range of garden pests.

Powers and Techniques

Small Size (Small Animal Sized; European Hedgehogs grow up to 160-260mm), Enhanced Senses (European Hedgehogs rely primarily on their senses of smell and hearing when foraging along with having good night vision[6]), Natural Weaponry (European Hedgehogs have around 7,000 spines, [7]), Observation (Quantum Observation; Any living being or object that is capable of making measurements using any of the five senses influence reality in subtle ways, a phenomenon known as the observer effect).

Resistance to Poison Manipulation (European Hedgehogs are are immune to certain poisonous plants[8])

Equipment

Nothing Notable

Optional Equipment

Poison from poisonous plants

Other

Standard Tactics: European Hedgehogs aren't fighter and thus will generally try to run away from their opponent or curl up into a spiky ball

Weaknesses: The European Hedgehog's face and belly aren't covered in spines and thus are wide open for attacks, they naturally are nocturnal animals and they aren't the greatest of fighters, instead relying purely on a passive strategy

References

  1. At the moment the European hedgehog, Erinaceus europaeus, is not endangered (in danger of vanishing in the wild). In parts of its huge range, which stretches east to forests around Moscow and south to the olive groves of the Mediterranean, it remains locally common.
  2. European hedgehogs are omnivores, but feed mostly on insects. They prefer beetles, earwigs, ants, bees, wasps, butterflies and moths, and will also eat snails, cockroaches, crickets, grasshoppers, eggs, lizards, frogs, snakes, small rodents, and carrion.
  3. They have sharp needles all over their backs which can penetrate the skin. It will often itch if a needle does and may cause a rash.
  4. If you’ve seen a hedgehog, it might be surprising to learn that they only reach speeds of around 4 miles per hour, which is the equivalent of a very brisk walk for humans and is considerably slower than other animals of the same size. Guinea pigs, for example, can reach speeds of 6 miles per hour.
  5. While hedgehogs do not run especially quickly for their size, they make up for it in stamina. They cover 8 miles or more in an evening, foraging for food: especially impressive when you consider they are only usually awake for 6 hours.
  6. When foraging, hedgehogs rely primarily on their senses of smell and hearing because they have weak eyesight, though their eyes are good for night-time vision.
  7. An adult hedgehog will have around 7,000 spines. Pat Morris was one of the first hedgehog researchers to verify this figure. In his book Hedgehogs, he tells us he did this by cutting the spines off several dead hedgehogs and counting them!
  8. Hedgehogs are amazing little mammals that have some tricks that help them avoid predators. Hedgehogs are immune to certain poisonous plants.
  9. Hedgehogs are amazing little mammals that have some tricks that help them avoid predators. Hedgehogs are immune to certain poisonous plants. When they eat these plants they make frothy saliva in their mouth that they then lick all over their spines. This covers them in the plant’s poison! Scientists believe this tactic may help to hide their scent from predators or give predators a nasty shock should they attack!
