Evanescent Existence
Tsubakura appears as the second playable character in Evanescent Existence. They are initially locked, and playing as Tsubakura requires defeating the Extra Stage boss with Yabusame Houlen. The general premise of Tsubakura's story is that they were spirited away from the Outside World to a strange land called Mugenri along with their acquaintances. Worried, their friend Yabusame used their dimension-crossing ability to search for Tsubakura. The culprit turns out to be the priest Tsurubami Senri, who placed the outsiders in separate spaces to train their newfound abilities. Tsurubami took on Tsubakura's appearance and began picking fights with the outsiders in order to test their strength. Because of this impersonator, the player does not actually control Tsubakura during the main scenario, but rather Tsurubami. While their portrait shows an eye on the hat, it closes whenever Tsurubami speaks to an outsider. Every character who encounters Tsurubami believes them to be the real Tsubakura. Various clues throughout the game hint at Tsurubami's true identity, such as the talismans used in the fight against Yabusame, which foreshadow Tsurubami, since Tsubakura uses technology instead. Tsurubami picks a fight with Kurohebi in the Dimensional Cave, then with Aoji Shitodo in their personal space. They also run into Yabusame Houlen in the Interconnecting Corridor, a dimension only Tsurubami has authority to enter, with Yabusame finding this "Tsubakura" more annoying than usual. They go on to antagonize Hooaka Shitodo and Kuroji Shitodo, with Kuroji sensing that something is off about "Tsubakura." Clause is the last opponent Tsurubami faces, and Clause is the first to realize they are a fake all along. What the real Tsubakura was doing during this time is unknown. The real Tsubakura becomes playable in the Extra Stage. Since the impostor and Yabusame have already defeated everyone, Tsubakura crosses the spaces with ease. They enter the sun that casts a shadow and meet Clause, telling them to "go back to the hospital." After defeating Clause, Tsubakura vows to punish whoever has been impersonating them, and Tsurubami appears. Tsurubami admits to being the impostor and introduces themself as the priest of the Senri Shrine. After a duel in which Tsurubami tests their strength, Tsubakura "defeats" Tsurubami, who explains that they caused all of this because they wanted a new protector for Mugenri as a temporary Senri priest. Noticing that Yabusame is approaching, Tsubakura asks the priest to give them a hard fight. Yabusame initially believes they are speaking to Tsubakura before realizing it is Tsurubami. After Tsurubami handles Yabusame, they explain the same thing to them. They intended to reveal Tsubakura to Yabusame, but Tsubakura had already left, not before leaving Yabusame a mocking note. The priest had considered Tsubakura as their replacement, but after witnessing Yabusame's potential, they handed both of them the job of youkai exterminator. Afterward, Yabusame and Tsubakura settled in Mugenri. Earthen Miraculous Sword
Tsubakura appears as the second playable character in Earthen Miraculous Sword. Shortly after settling in Mugenri, Yabusame and Tsubakura are adjusting to their new life at the Senri Shrine. Tsurubami's familiar, Jinbei, monitors them and ensures they perform youkai extermination properly. Tsubakura pulls a prank on Yabusame and Jinbei by giving them a suspicious black drink they claim is coffee. After the prank, Jinbei notes that the weather has recently been cloudy and asks them to resolve the issue. Since only one of them can go, they settle the matter with rock-paper-scissors. Tsubakura loses and is forced to resolve the incident, despite having shown repeatedly that they have no interest in doing so. Upset at losing rock-paper-scissors to Yabusame, Tsubakura is forced to resolve the incident but decides to finish the mission quickly. They encounter Jun Amanomiya, a rain youkai who then chats with them about how troublesome rain can be. Since Jun's powers resemble the incident, Tsubakura defeats them, believing Jun to be the mastermind. Thinking the incident is solved, Tsubakura heads to the Human Village to get some sake. Shortly afterward, a slug youkai named Shou Amanomori attacks Tsubakura in revenge for defeating Jun, but Shou is defeated, and Tsubakura teases them about how the sun will return to Mugenri. They encounter Lumen Celeritas, who is also trying to solve the incident and finds Tsubakura suspicious. Realizing the incident is not over yet, they move closer to the clouds and encounter Hibaru Kokutenshi, a youkai salaryman who attacks Tsubakura in a poor attempt to make them repay the sun's debt. Eventually, Tsubakura arrives at the Ritual Site, where they meet Sukune Katano. They try to chase Sukune off for interrupting an "important ritual" but fail. Tsubakura enters the building and climbs the stairs to find Adagumo no Yaorochi, who is conducting a ritual to transfer the Tasouken's spirit into a clay sword that Sukune made. Tsubakura hazards a guess that it is called the "Ame no Murakumo no Tsurugi," but due to poor communication, Yaorochi mistakenly assumes Tsubakura is there to take the sword away, and the two fight. After Yaorochi is defeated, the sword attacks Tsubakura on its own. Fortunately, the clay vessel cannot contain the Tasouken, and the sword stops. Once everything is resolved, Sukune reveals that the clay replica is actually a sword-shaped bottle opener, much to Yaorochi's annoyance. In the end, Tsubakura shares some sake with them. The night after Yaorochi's defeat, Tsubakura holds a drinking party with Yaorochi, Sukune, and the other heroes inside the Ritual Site, which has been repurposed into a banquet hall. Running out of sake, the three protagonists decide to fetch more from the Senri Shrine, settling who will go with rock-paper-scissors. Tsubakura loses and heads out. While drunk, they deal with an overpowered Lumen Celeritas, who blasts themself away with a powerful attack. Tsubakura quickly sobers up and realizes it is snowing more than usual. Eventually, they meet Adagumo no Saragimaru, Yaorochi's younger sibling, who had been lying in wait to kill Tsubakura for ruining the ritual and interfering with Yaorochi's happiness. Tsubakura invites Saragimaru for a drink, but Saragimaru refuses. Tsubakura then attacks them. After Saragimaru is defeated, Tsubakura invites them to drink together without caring about their feelings. Reactivate Majestical Imperial
Tsubakura returns as a playable character in Reactivate Majestical Imperial, this time partnered with Yabusame Houlen. During gameplay, the two can swap turns between shooting and passively collecting souls through bombing or dying. Tsubakura specifically enables the active character, Yabusame, to pick up spirit items, though those items cannot be drawn in by focusing. They also appear as a possible Stage 4 boss alongside Yabusame if the player chooses the Slaver Team. An unseasonably long winter has set in, and spirits are suddenly flowing in great numbers. Tsubakura shows no concern, ignoring Adagumo no Yaorochi's explanation of the incident. Jinbei forces Yabusame and Tsubakura to head out. Tsubakura and Yabusame begin by ignoring Sese Kitsugai, then beat up Tsugumi Umatachi for collecting souls. Arriving at the Giant's Burrow cave, they encounter Fujiwara no Iyozane, who refuses to answer questions after the team learns they are manipulating the spirits. After dealing with them, they run into Sukune Katano and Adagumo no Yaorochi, who tell the humans to go home. Yabusame wants to resolve the incident together, but everyone refuses. After defeating them, the team leaves the cave and travels along a river, where Taira no Fumikado is trying to exploit the sudden influx of spirits to revive Taira no Masakado. Their plan is foiled, however, because something else is attracting the spirits. After defeating them, the team discovers that all the spirits are drawn to the Harujion in the Withered Grove. There they find a newborn chimera soul, whom Yabusame names "Shion." Shion can sense people's minds by smelling them and is particularly interested in Tsubakura because of their blank, neutral soul, wanting to consume it. Realizing that the Harujion is causing the long winter, they defeat Shion. In the ending, Yabusame and Tsubakura return to the Senri Shrine with Shion in tow, much to Jinbei's annoyance. Shion indicates that they were attracted by the essence of the shrine and remain interested in consuming Tsubakura's soul. Even in the Bottle Opener and Slaver Teams' endings, Shion still ends up at the Senri Shrine with the same results, drawn to Tsubakura's soul. On their way through the Giant's Burrow, Kuroji Shitodo and Adagumo no Saragimaru run into Yabusame and Tsubakura, who are curious about their partnership. Kuroji tells them to go away, but this provokes a fight. Yabusame and Tsubakura take turns fighting separately before teaming up for the final spell card. Kuroji defeats Yabusame and Tsubakura, who were actually going easy and now have an excuse to return to the shrine, leaving Kuroji and Saragimaru to deal with the incident. A few days after the main story, Fumikado arrives at the Senri Shrine and confesses that they were only taking advantage of the abundance of spirits coming through a hole in the Mugenri Barrier. Jinbei explains that a few months ago, they asked a friend and skilled barrier builder, Tenkai Zuifeng, to repair the barrier. Jinbei wants to check on Tenkai's progress and asks the heroes to regroup and consult with them. Arriving at the Road Traveled by Light, Yabusame and Tsubakura confront Tenkai, who is curious whether the two are strong enough to replace Tsurubami Senri as protectors of Mugenri. Tenkai is defeated but left satisfied and repairs the barrier during the battle. On the way home, the team is ambushed by Sese Kitsugai, who has absorbed the spirits the heroes had been collecting and transforms into a much more powerful form. They are still defeated, and the spirits leave their body. Brilliant Pagoda or Haze Castle
Tsubakura returns as a playable character in Brilliant Pagoda or Haze Castle, this time as part of the Shrine Team alongside Yabusame Houlen and Shion. The player can assign Tsubakura as the main shooter, the sub (bombing), or a support providing skill upgrades. Their upgrade increases the movement gauge's tilting speed, and they have three skills: wider damage with a flash bomb, a 55% chance to automatically dodge, and bombs that cover the screen and damage Stage 6 and EX bosses. Taira no Fumikado and Fujiwara no Iyozane arrive at the Senri Shrine to warn of the impending war, as tensions between the Youkai Alliance and Devanagara have escalated. Tsubakura shows no interest in their problems and makes them leave. Afterward, the Shitodo siblings visit to report that they were attacked by a mysterious figure and need Tsubakura's help treating Hooaka's arm injuries. Tsubakura is able to grow an artificial arm for Hooaka. In return, Kuroji shares the rumor circulating through Mugenri, which Tsubakura believes means it will rain free sake. As they leave, Kuroji tosses a few coins onto the shrine's veranda as further compensation. Yabusame notices the coins are all standing on their edges, which annoys Tsubakura. Jinbei says nothing to the others and enters the shrine. Eventually, Jinbei tells Tsubakura to go out and deal with "something dangerous," without specifying what. Reasoning that it would be safer to travel in larger groups due to the ongoing war, they loosen Shion's seal so Shion can leave the shrine with Tsubakura. Tsubakura, Yabusame, and Shion leave the shrine and head for the battlefields. If the player chooses to go right, the team heads toward the imperial capital, Devanagara, hoping to stop the war. Along the way, they defeat Mitsumo, who threatens to possess them, as well as various members of the Imperial Army, including Medias, Kunimitsu, Kaoru, and Sanra. They climb the Pagoda of the Heavenly Mirror to reach the Heavenly Mausoleum, where they witness the emperor Ooama no Ake no Mitori break the Great Mirror. Mitori explains that they did so to lift the curse placed on the capital's people, and reveals the reason they orchestrated a coup d'état to overthrow the previous Fujiwara dynasty. Realizing that the "mirror breaking" mentioned in the rumor is not about sake after all, the protagonists decide to leave after requesting that Mitori withdraw their troops. However, Mitori, wanting to test the priests' powers and to demolish the Senri Shrine in order to conquer all of Mugenri, challenges the protagonists to a duel. After Mitori's defeat, Mugenri enjoys peace once more, and the heroes spend their free time at the Senri Shrine. Mitori and Sanra visit them, imploring them to speak with the Dragonfly Army as well to ensure the flames of war are completely extinguished. Tsubakura agrees, and the three set out once more, with the unresolved rumor still looming over them. If the player chooses to go left, the team heads toward the Dragonfly Castle. Hoping to stop the war, Tsubakura and the others head toward the origin of the youkai troops after defeating Souko Shirami, whom Tsubakura wanted to defeat to keep their secret of making fake charms for Souko from being exposed. Along the way, they learn that they belong to the recently formed Dragonfly Army, led by the new emperor chosen by the Dragonfly Castle. They defeat followers Kujiru, Kaisen, Garaiya, and Para as they progress, finally reaching the throne room, Ukifune's Room, where they meet the new emperor, Taira no Chouki. Tsubakura asks them to stop the war, but Yabusame compares their name with Fumikado's, whom Chouki sees as an enemy. This angers Chouki, and they fight. Mugenri enjoys peace once more, and the heroes spend their free time at the Senri Shrine. Chouki comes by to bother them, demanding that they return the Dragonfly Castle, which followed the protagonists home after Chouki's defeat. If the player chooses the middle route, or does not go fully left or right, Tsubakura and the others wander around Mugenri trying to find the sake mentioned in the rumor. They randomly encounter just about anyone they have met in previous games, each with various reasons to battle. Most notably, they learn more about the war, the rumor, the person who attacked the Shitodo siblings, and how these events have affected the residents of Mugenri. If the party has defeated every final boss of the game and completed a full run while remaining on the Shrine Road, they meet Suzumi Kuzu (Hamal Cine). Here, the protagonists contemplate the true reason Kuroji shared the rumor with them, and Tsubakura figures out that it was bait to lure them out. They encounter Suzumi, who reminisces about the times they spent together. Tsubakura mentions the number of times they have both tried to kill each other. Suzumi says it is still too early to fight the protagonists but does so anyway. After the party defeats Suzumi, they erase their memories of the fight by showing them a book, leaving Suzumi to disappear. After the three have their memories erased by Suzumi, they continue along the Shrine Road with a strange feeling looming over them. Yabusame remembers their encounter with Suzumi but fails to tell Tsubakura about it. On the Brilliant Route, they run into Haiji Senri, who challenges them to a spell card battle to obtain the trio's spell cards. On the Haze Route, they run into Yago Ametsukana, who battles them to test their power. They win, and Yago deems that something or someone's future is in safe hands, though they do not reveal what. On the Neutral Route, Tsubakura wonders if Suzumi entered Mugenri, prompting Yabusame to clarify that they encountered Suzumi earlier. Suddenly, they run into the "dangerous thing" Jinbei warned them about: Xeno a. Xeno a explains that Tsurubami used to be their sparring partner and that they miss fighting them since they left Mugenri. Xeno a challenges the trio to see how powerful Tsurubami's successors are. They lose but express satisfaction after the fight. After fighting Xeno a, Tsubakura tells Yabusame that their and Shion's memories were tampered with by Suzumi. Yabusame reveals that they fought Suzumi, and Tsubakura explains that Suzumi's powers do not work on Yabusame. Thanks to Yabusame's mention of the fight, the others recover their memories. Tsurubami suddenly appears, announcing that since they have returned from the Outside World, the new priests need to "disappear." Tsubakura does not wish to fight Tsurubami, knowing they cannot win. The two parties fight, with Tsurubami promising to give the outsiders their freedom if they win. Eventually, Tsurubami reveals themself to be Suzumi (Arde) in disguise, and it quickly becomes clear that it was not a mere disguise. Tsubakura and Suzumi fight due to personal grudges, and Tsubakura wins. Tsubakura demands answers, but Suzumi makes Tsubakura emotional, uses their ability to alter reality, and disappears. It once again does not affect Yabusame, but no one believes that they fought Suzumi since they are unable to recall the event after Yabusame reminds them of it. Regardless, Tsubakura keeps up their guard. If the player is playing as any team other than the Shrine Team, Tsubakura can appear as a possible final boss of the game, appearing on stages 6:2 and 6:3, randomly on 6:0 if Suzumi is not unlocked, or randomly on 6:4 if playing as the Preschool Team. Tsubakura will be roaming around the Dragonfly Castle or the Shrine Road, looking for clues related to the incident. With the New Emperor Team, Tsubakura finds the trio hoping to learn more about the leader of the Dragonfly Army. They engage in an exchange of wordplay with Fujiwara no Iyozane, with some lines mocking Taira no Fumikado, though Fumikado does not understand them. Because of this, Fumikado refuses to share any information until Tsubakura explains those lines, which Tsubakura declines to do. They decide to fight to settle the matter. With the Preschool Team, Tsubakura comes to complain about their new duties as the official new Senri priest. Although not fond of their new responsibilities, Tsubakura expresses interest in the Senri Shrine itself but bemoans that all the shrine's official documents are lies. To learn more, they attack Tenkai in an attempt to force information out of them. With the Scoundrel Team, Tsubakura hopes to force Kuroji to explain who severed Hooaka's arm and why Kuroji shared the rumor with them, so Tsubakura attacks the trio. With the Secret Team, Suzumi Kuzu runs into Tsubakura. Figuring that Tsubakura has had things too easy ever since arriving in Mugenri, Hamal Cine attacks them in order to bring them anguish again. Tsubakura casts six spell cards, five of which are reused from Evanescent Existence. They are eventually defeated, though the outcome for each team is left unknown. |
Name Meaning
Tsubakura Enraku (燕楽 玄鳥) is their full name. JynX has stated that over fifty name candidates were considered during Tsubakura's development, and ten of them carried significant meaning before the final choice was made. When paired with Yabusame's surname, Houlen, as in Len'en, Tsubakura's surname may also connect to the series title: Enraku, as in Len'en.
Read literally, the kanji in their given name (玄鳥) mean "mysterious bird." It is one of the Japanese words for the swallow, though it is pronounced tsubakura rather than genchou. Their surname, Enraku (燕楽), is homophonous with a word meaning "partying" (宴楽), most likely a nod to their ability of "enjoying that which is enjoyable." The character 燕 can mean swallow or swift, and it can also be read as tsubakura, once again pointing to the swallow.
JynX once ran a Twitter poll to reveal information about the Len'en Project, and one option held a secret meaning behind Tsubakura's name. Since it received the fewest votes, JynX took pity on it and revealed the secret regardless: every kanji in the name hides a meaning of either "black" or "white." This had already been hinted at in the omake of Evanescent Existence. The kanji 楽 and 鳥 each contain the character 白, giving them the meaning "white." The kanji 玄 can inherently mean "black." The character 燕 is the most complex of the four: parts of it can be combined to form the kanji for "north" (北), which in the philosophy of the five phases is tied to the color "black." The name is intended to represent the colors of a swallow, which has a white torso and black wings.
Appearance
General Description: Tsubakura has short, neck-length black hair and deep black eyes. They're usually seen scowling and hardly display emotions other than boredom and anger, aside from the occasional wry smile. Tsubakura is considered shorter than average, being shorter than Yabusame Houlen but taller than Kuroji Shitodo.
Clothing/Outfit: Dressed in clothing similar to a tuxedo, modeled after many different types and genus of swallows.
- Vest: A black and white vest that stretches down the sides and does not cover the abdomen or back.
- Ribbon-Tie: A red ribbon-tie resembling the red throats of most Hirundo swallows.
- Sleeves: Two white bell sleeves on their arms in a style similar to a kimono.
- Underlayer: A sleeveless white tailcoat, called "swallow tail clothes" (燕尾服) in Japanese, with coat tails modeled after those of a swallow.
- Lower Half: A green "hakama" and a purple-blue cloth tied around their waist.
- Footwear: Dark geta over white socks closed with buttons.
Accessories: An oversized, poofy black top hat with a dark red interior and band. The hat gains an eye resembling the Eye of Senri after the events of Evanescent Existence.
Personality
- Contradictory: Tsubakura has a personality with lots of contradictions, and others cannot understand their words and actions very well. They are quite knowledgeable throughout the series but tend to give incoherent replies.
- Aloof: Tsubakura always has a long face and is very straightforward and aloof with everyone.
- Impatient: Because of their high intelligence, Tsubakura can come across as conceited, impatient, and condescending to those not sharp enough to follow their explanations immediately.
- Analytical: In contrast to the slower Yabusame, they are very analytical and quick on the uptake.
- Lazy: Tsubakura dislikes putting in effort and prefers cutting corners. They prefer lazing about without a care for incidents, not doing their job as a Senri priest unless forced to by Jinbei. They enjoy having naps often.
- Modest: Tsubakura claims to be modest and only arrogant toward certain people such as Kuroji.
- Trickster: Tsubakura sometimes fights opponents just to kill time and is openly a habitual trickster, such as getting Jinbei to drink ink or making a fake demon-warding charm for Souko Shirami.
- Blunt: They find the clothes of Mugenri's residents weird and generally find everyone there a nuisance. Lumen claims Tsubakura's heart is as dark as their hair.
- Weird Food Ingredients: Tsubakura likes to eat and drink ordinary ink and thinks it tastes great. They put ink in their coffee or any beverage, and like ink fried eggs and soap in miso soup. They think miasma is a good spice ingredient. They are particularly fond of alcohol, especially saké, and also like rum. They like agura-nabe the most out of nabe types and also like soba. They prefer fancier food.
Goals
- Solve Incidents (Succeeded most of them, Ongoing).
Relationships
Yabusame and Tsubakura have been friends since long ago, though their relationship is described as troublesome and the two have evidently been through a great deal together. Tsubakura frequently picks on Yabusame due to their gullible and slow nature, much to Yabusame's annoyance. Yabusame often fails to understand what Tsubakura is saying. Although Yabusame is fond of Tsubakura, Tsubakura apparently dislikes them in return. When asked by JynX why it seems like Tsubakura is so cold to Yabusame, JynX noted that for the time being they'll be keeping their relationship a mystery in several ways[1].
Suzumi Kuzu
The dynamic between Tsubakura and Suzumi is defined by a fierce mixture of love and hatred. The two were apparently on close terms during their time among the outsiders and even collaborated at least once, producing Kurohebi. At some point their bond soured for reasons that remain unexplained, leading to a pattern of mutual trickery and several attempts on each other's lives. Tsubakura regards Suzumi as extraordinarily dangerous, going so far as to say that no genuine threat exists in the world apart from them. Suzumi, for their part, insists that Tsubakura is the crueler of the pair.
Each of Suzumi's personality souls regards Tsubakura differently. Whether Tsubakura recognizes the individual souls is uncertain, but they are at least aware that Suzumi cycles through distinct "moods."
Hamal Cine displays a deeply unhealthy fixation on Tsubakura, describing them with both reverence and delight while also wishing to inflict maximum suffering upon them, oscillating between playful teasing and open threats. Hamee consistently addresses Tsubakura with the honorific "-sama," as though speaking to a superior. Their goal is to make Tsubakura experience the same despair felt on the day their mother died, and they consider this their primary objective, alongside orchestrating an excessively elaborate death for them. For all their disturbing behavior, Hamee's admiration appears sincere, since they react defensively to any insult directed at Tsubakura and speak of them just as worshipfully in fantasy as in person.
Arde, in contrast, regards Tsubakura with nothing but contempt, viewing them as a nuisance and taunting them after victory. Unlike Hamee, Arde favors a practical approach to revenge and wishes to eliminate Tsubakura quickly, and they never use an honorific when referring to them.
Benny's feelings toward Tsubakura remain unclear, though it can be inferred that their motives resemble those of the other two souls. Curiously, Benny shares Tsubakura's eye color.
Shitodo Siblings
Kuroji, Hooaka, and Aoji Shitodo are all acquainted with Tsubakura, and they placed enough trust in them to allow treatment of Hooaka's injured arm. Tsubakura sometimes drops by the Shitodo residence, though Kuroji does not welcome these visits.
Between Kuroji and Tsubakura, exchanges tend to consist of courteous insults and dry sarcasm. Kuroji regards Tsubakura as superior in every respect and believes them to always be a step ahead. Although Kuroji acts dismissive about the gap between them, their sense of inadequacy clearly wounds their pride; they appear resigned to being inferior yet frequently make self-deprecating comments after losing to Tsubakura, as though victory was never possible. In the Scoundrel Team's Haze route ending, Kuroji wonders whether they might finally stand on equal footing against Tsubakura.
Their relationship is not purely hostile, however. Kuroji has occasionally shown concern for Tsubakura, surprising their siblings, and Tsubakura themself notes that Kuroji tends to interfere out of worry to an irritating degree. The two have known each other for years, long enough for Kuroji to predict how Tsubakura will handle a situation. Part of Kuroji's inferiority complex seems rooted in genuine admiration for Tsubakura's talent, as they have praised the prodigy more than once. Kuroji also drew inspiration from Tsubakura when designing one of their spell cards.
Jinbei
Jinbei, the shikigami of the Senri Shrine, serves Tsubakura but does not always comply with their instructions. Jinbei sometimes directs Yabusame to resolve incidents. Tsubakura holds Jinbei in high esteem and addresses them as "Sensei," though they are also fond of playing pranks on them. Even so, there are matters Jinbei refuses to disclose to Tsubakura.
Tsurubami Senri
Although Tsubakura resents Tsurubami for impersonating them, they reluctantly accepted the role of current Senri priest alongside Yabusame in Tsurubami's place. Tsubakura does not express a strong opinion of Tsurubami, but admits uncertainty over which is more frightening: "Tsurubami" or "Senri."
The two share a striking number of traits. Their appearances are similar enough that Tsurubami could impersonate Tsubakura convincingly enough to deceive longtime acquaintances from the outside world, despite awkward mannerisms. Both favor monochrome attacks and possess comparable outfits, eyes, hair color, and even identical height. Furthermore, while ink manipulation is only confirmed as Tsubakura's ability, Tsurubami's manipulation of letters may share the same origin, evidenced by their use of an ink brush to craft a talisman that dispels their disguise. Both also use the "Ink Card" class of spells. Oddly, Tsurubami and their hat show a slightly duller eye color than usual while disguised, even though the disguise does not alter their body.
Shion
Shion and Tsubakura generally coexist amicably. After noticing Tsubakura's neutral soul, Shion grew deeply attached and developed a desire to consume it. Tsubakura finds Shion's clingy, childish behavior irritating and considers them a nuisance, yet permits Shion to consume their soul on a daily basis.
Kurohebi
Tsubakura numbers among Kurohebi's creators. Kurohebi reserves an honorific exclusively for Tsubakura and openly refers to them as a parent. Tsubakura was startled to discover Kurohebi alive in Mugenri. Though Suzumi Kuzu, who likely contributed to Kurohebi's creation, has ordered Kurohebi to kill Tsubakura, Kurohebi appears hesitant to follow through.
Hoojiro Shitodo & Haru
Direct interaction has not been depicted thus far, but both Hoojiro Shitodo and Haru apparently worked alongside Tsubakura before vanishing. Both are aware of a one-year "deadline" that Tsubakura set and of their research into Mugenri. They were granted passage on the Wings of Magritte, which Tsubakura seemingly must approve personally. Hoojiro seems to trust Tsubakura, referring to them as "the doctor" and believing her siblings will manage fine in their care. Haru, conversely, appears to hold a low opinion of Tsubakura and always addresses them by their full name.
NiLU
Tsubakura is one of NiLU's creators. Their personal feelings toward NiLU are unknown, but the monochroid was eager to learn more about them.

Tsubakura's body is specifically modified to greatly enhance their strength along with magic, otherwise they'd be just as strong as the average human[17]. Tenkai notes that Yabusame and Tsubakura were way stronger then they thought even with it being two on one[20]). Can ignore conventional durability with Attacks (All characters can break or destroy one's barrier[21], where barriers have no thickness and such have no mass either[22], thus as they lack mass they can be said to not exist in this world making them unreal[22], barriers do not exist as physical objects[22] and instead are the differing phenomena on each side[22] with nothing between the "front" and "back"[22] being truly an "unreal" existence in the end[22])
Durability: Metropolis level, Higher with Barriers (Lives in Len'en are canonically a[21] barrier being removed when a character gets hit[23]). Their Barrier Makes them Very Difficult to Kill (Barriers have no thickness and such have no mass either[22], thus as they lack mass they can be said to not exist in this world making them unreal[22], barriers do not exist as physical objects[22] and instead are the differing phenomena on each side[22] with nothing between the "front" and "back"[22] being truly an "unreal" existence in the end[22])

Tsubakura read the rituals and history of the shrines over 108 times in the matter of a small timeframe, finishing the 102nd and 103rd reading all while speaking to Jinbei[9], they were able to find out the book was a fake written by Jinbei after 108 times reading it in a short timeframe[9], meaning they can absorb information effectively instantly. Tsubakura made a "Two-Dimensional Cloth" for Yabusame with zero thickness so that they don't fly off into another dimension on a whim[35]. Tsubakura's technology far outclasses the Outside World and Mugenri's as they don't announce thier inventions to the world[36])

- Function: Its shape may change depending on Tsubakura's mood[55], it can be used to fire dozens of them to attack an opponent.
Spell Cards
Spell Cards are special cards used in battle called "pai" that aren't only usable for danmaku, the primary goal is to give the opponent a sense of defeat and the loser has to obey "anything" they say[124]. Spell Cards are officially named and recognized in series, with characters like Haiji Senri running a spell card shop[125]. Any user can use any spell card, however if they try to use a strong card that's way out of their league, they won't be able to use its full power[126]. Only the original owner can make full use of a card's power, someone else using the card will borrow a part of the original owner's power in addition to the danmaku attack[120]. Spell Cards are made through cardboard, plastic or metallic materials, even if they don't have a physical form, varying on the maker[127].

Notable Techniques
Manipulating Ink
Tsubakura can control ink and use it as a weapon. More accurately, the substance is not ink but nanomachine-like objects that resemble it. Tsubakura can materialize a long sword made of ink and make practical use of it. The sword's shape changes depending on their mood.
Using Technology
Using their scientific knowledge and aptitude for technology, Tsubakura has created various spell cards and danmaku toys. They were able to grow an artificial arm for Hooaka Shitodo with ease, and can grow any body part as long as they have a cell sample. They perform experiments on themself, such as remodeling their body structure so they cannot feel the cold, and can do just about anything when it comes to genetic modification.
Tsubakura developed their own gadgets during their time in the outside world without releasing them to the public. They can still create astonishing inventions in Mugenri, though with some limitations due to being located in the Sanctuary. Tsubakura created Yabusame Houlen's "Two-Dimensional Cloth" with zero thickness, preventing Yabusame from flying off into different dimensions unprompted.
Enjoying That Which Is Enjoyable
Tsubakura has the ability to quickly find out about anything interesting, even if it is meaningless games. For currently unknown reasons, they purposefully do not use this ability, which may play into their loafing personality.
Superior Flight Speed
While Tsubakura's current ability to fly comes from Mugenri's dimensional properties, they possess the potential to become one of the fastest flyers in Mugenri if they got serious, based on the impressive flight speed of the swallow, their bird namesake. Their flying speed without anything weighing them down can reach 2600 km/h, a little over Mach 2, controlled by their eyes and abilities. Tsubakura apparently had experience with flight even prior to the events of Evanescent Existence, possibly due to having travelled to a dimension which allows flight.
Abilities as a Senri Priest
A Senri priest's duties involve incident resolving, maintenance of public order and the Mugenri Barrier, as well as performing exorcisms and good-luck charms. Tsubakura briefly mentioned having connections to such matters prior to arriving in Mugenri, though they have shown little interest in being a priest. According to Tenkai, the Senri Shrine exists as a pillar for Mugenri, and without it and its priests, Mugenri would collapse. Tsubakura simply existing as a priest maintains the pillar while Tsurubami is away.
An important symbol related to the Senri is the "eye", always shown as half-closed with a black background and mainly seen on Tsubakura's and Tsurubami's hat. It is implied this eye is conscious. Yabusame says the hat with the eye was borrowed from Tsurubami, though it is unclear whether this means a different hat or the same hat with the eye added. Yabusame compares it to the Tasouken, claiming both are sacred treasures, though its function remains unclear.
Danmaku
Danamku attacks are a common form of attacking within Mugenri. Simple danmaku can be fired without a spell card though using someone else's spell card let's one borrow a part of the original owner's power in addition to the danmaku attack[120].
Bombs
Normal Bomb
Normal bombs are screen wide attacks that deal varying damage deppending on the character.
Flash Bombs
Flash Bombs are trigged while unfocused, and the gauge is completely filled. Just for an instant, flash bombs grant invincibility and doesn't count as losing a spell card even if used during one.

Other
Standard Tactics: Tsubakura has directly noted they rarely put any effort into fighting and that they don't want to fight in matches knowing they can't win. When fighting they will utilize danmaku attacks that cover the entire screen.
Weaknesses
- Spell Card Weaknesses: Any user can use any spell card, however if they try to use a strong card that's way out of their league, they won't be able to use its full power[126]. Only the original owner can make full use of a card's power, someone else using the card will borrow a part of the original owner's power in addition to the danmaku attack[120]. Spell Cards can normally only eb activated under the influence of the Mugenri Barrier, though one would be able to learn about the techniques and such even outside the barrier's influence, though it'd be like a sport where one can only get so far with classroom learning[128].
- Spell Card Duel Weaknesses: Through winning a spell card duel, the winner can issue an order that the loser must follow, failure to follow the order will result in Mugenri erasing their existence[122]. However the loser can get out of the order by escaping from the winner's sight before they make the order[122]. Along with this, there are some flexibility to spell card rules, where the most important thing is that both parties "accept" the outcome[129]. What matters the most is for the loser to realize that they've lost and that they have to obey the winner[130].
- Bullet Weaknesses: Taking too much damage will cancel out a danmaku attack[47].
- Unique Weaknesses: Normally very unwilling to do things, making it hard to give their all in a fight.
Note
- In the adaptation of Evanescent Existence in Book of the Cafe, one is playing as the real Tsubakura instead of the fake Tsubakura (Tsurubami Senri), according to JynX this is purely for the observer's convenience and so gameplay-wise one could use the real Tsubakura[131].
Explanations
Mugenri
Mugenri is a realm that is born from beyond people's memories, cast out alongside the flow of time and is a world apart from reality[132]. Existing as a place where both humans and non-huamns live togehter and things disappearing from sight are never seen again[132]. It is described as a land that does not exist within reality[9]. It is described as a land that does not exist within reality[9]. When defining Mugenri in Brilliant Pagoda or Haze Castle, it's called a world separated from reality[133]. Tsubakura notes that Mugenri is separated from everything else, though Tenkai notes that Mugenri doesn't have an "inside" or "outside" and once Tsubakura has seen the full picture of Mugenri they will understand[134].
Many are either swept away to Mugenri or captured[132], being described as a land where limitless relations and illusionary laws are linked together[132]. Mugenri cannot be directly reached from most other places, it has its own Netherworld, Makai, and so on separate from those of the outside world, Mugenri can only be accessed from most places if one goes through the outside world along the way[135].
Mugenri's true size has never been revealed, and very few places are mora advanced then the capital of Mugenri[136].
Despite being cut off from the outside world, seasons such as winter still persists in Mugenri[13].
Mugenri's capital is rougly 10 million of a population, but the population for all of it is a secret[137]. Half-Human, Half-Youkai entities exist in Mugenri but they haven't been shown yet[138].
There are a variety of ways to obtain powers in Mugenri, one could be born with an ability, obtain it through practice or a contract, but a vast majority of people in Mugenri are ordinary and have no powers at all[139].
If one dies in Mugenri, their soul is led to the Netherworld where it will be judged within 49 days and after receiving its due punishment, proceeds to its next life via reincarnation[140].
Mugenri uses a calendar system called "Ruri" based on the current era starts from Mugenri's birth, like the Japan's old lunisolar calendar, the actual year wasn't given by JynX[8].
Spell Card System
In Spell Card dues, the winner can issue an order that the loser must obey, there are fundamentally no limitations to this order to where they can even order the opponent to kill themself, with failure to follow the order resulting in Mugenri completely erasing one's existence, though an order can be withdrawn and the loser doesn't have to listen to the order if they can escape from the winner's sight before they make the order[122].
Unlike Touhou Project, Spell Card System does not restrict killing or disallow it, instead the people of the world feel ashamed of killing their opponent in battle and consider it more advantageous to force the loser to follow their orders[141].
Canon Routes
It is noted by JynX to think of all routes as if every timeline happened at once, with their being no true canon route[142].
Bad endings in specific are considered non-canon, all other endings have happened[143].
Trivia
- Tsubakura's face appears on all of the game icons for the .exe files.
- In Evanescent Existence, Tsurubami, while appearing as Tsubakura, has curly hair and is seen smiling. In the Extra Stage, however, when the real Tsubakura finally appears, they have straight hair and are seen frowning.
- Tsubakura is capable of speaking English, having understood and responded to Tsurubami Senri in that language during their encounter in Evanescent Existence's Extra Stage. It is even implied that they can speak other foreign languages.
- Adagumo no Yaorochi and Adagumo no Saragimaru, both separately, have referred to Tsubakura as a spider. This relates to folklore terms not unique to Len'en.
- In pre-v1.10a versions of Evanescent Existence and Earthen Miraculous Sword, there is an unused player sprite of Tsubakura. The design appears different, which may indicate an early prototype.
- "In This World ~ Monochrome eye," Tsubakura's Evanescent Existence theme, begins in the key of E-flat minor and changes to A minor. In accordance with the song's title, the former scale uses all the black keys of a piano, while the latter uses solely the white keys.
- JynX might make games that do not have Tsubakura and Yabusame as the main protagonists.
- When JynX compared characters for their self-worth, they compared Tsubakura to NIMBY.
- Tsubakura shares the same spell background with Yabusame, which features silhouettes of Asian stubtails, sparrows, swallows, phoenixes, and cranes; the bird names correspond to Yabusame, Suzumi, Tsubakura, Yabusame, and Tsurubami respectively.
- While Tsubakura is now paired with Yabusame as the main protagonist duo of the game, they were originally paired with Suzumi at the very beginning of development, though neither character was as fleshed out as they are now.
