Queen Mary

From The Codex
MOTHER/Queen Mary
Jump to navigationJump to search

Let me hear the melodies you’ve learned… Yes… That’s it… That’s the song… Oh… Giygas... I had loved him as if he were my own child, too… He would always wag his tail as a baby… I would sing him a lullaby, but then… Oh, George! This is your wife Maria! I know you’ve been waiting… I’m on my way to join you in heaven now...
~ Queen Mary’s speech before dying

Background

Maria, better known as Queen Mary, is a character in MOTHER (localized as EarthBound Beginnings). She is the wife of George, the great-grandmother of Ninten, the adoptive mother of Giygas, and the queen of Magicant. She and George were abducted from Earth by an alien race in 1906. There, Mary raises one of the aliens, Giygas, while her husband studies PSI without the race's permission; George later escapes back to Earth in 1908 without Mary, who is never seen again.

Prior to the events of EarthBound Beginnings, she and George met while she drew carnations outside Podunk as the first person who greeted him. Afterwards, when George was selected to write a novel cataloguing the town's history, he chose Maria as its artist, and married soon after. During their marriage, Maria was known for playing piano concerts for the rest of her family, and sewing with her fellow housewives, selling the results thereof for charity to the local church.

Afterwards, as seen in the prologue and MOTHER: Invasion from the Unknown, she and George were abducted by aliens in the early 1900s while traveling by car from Merrysville to Podunk near Mt. Itoi. George managed to escape two years later, but was unable to rescue Maria. As a result, she spent most of her life taking care of an infant Giegue, the game's primary villain.

When Ninten first visits her castle, Queen Mary will ask him to learn her song so she could remember the tune. She tells him it will be an easy task, due to it being only eight notes long. When Ninten returns after learning the Eight Melodies, she reminisces her past and an alien named iygas, causing her to remember that she is Maria and that Magicant was a mirage born from her consciousness. After telling Ninten and his friends about her past, she vanishes along with Magicant to join her husband, as her purpose has been completed.

During the final battle, when using the check command, Mary's consciousness informs Ninten's party that the only thing that may defeat Giygas is to sing her lullaby with all of their heart.

For clarity, the player cannot name a character Mary.

Notable Techniques

  • The Eight Melodies: The Eight Melodies of Mother was the song that Maria sung to Giygas as a lullaby during the time she was with him. It is the only way to defeat Giygas through reminding him of Maria filling him with guilt.
  • Magicant: A universe created entirely from the users own memories. It exists only within the mind of the user and is shaped entirely by their thoughts and desires.

Other

Standard Tactics: Queen Mary does not fight, sitting in her throne watching over her subjects, the random creations in her magicant will normally attack for her. If she remembers her song, she will awaken and her magicant will disappear.

Weaknesses: PSI users need to concentrate in order to use their PSI[3].
