Background

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Ritchie’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

Pokémon the Series
Ritchie first appeared in "A Friend In Deed" and quickly became friends with fellow Indigo Plateau Conference competitor Ash Ketchum in an elevator. When the elevator stopped working, he connected a device to Ash's Pikachu to get it running again. Ritchie met up with Ash outside afterward. While Team Rocket tricked Trainers into placing their Poké Balls into a sack, Ritchie figured out their scheme, and he and Ash chased after them. During the pursuit, Ash ran recklessly, causing Ritchie to stop him from going over a cliff. Ash pushed him in response, but later apologized. The two were unable to catch up to Team Rocket and camped out until the next day. Ritchie spotted tire tracks and led them to Team Rocket's van. When he went inside, he was spotted, and the trio trapped him and Ash in the van. They managed to escape with the Poké Balls retrieved from Team Rocket.

Their friendship created complications in "Friend or Foe Alike," since the two were matched against each other in the next round. Ritchie waited for Ash on the battlefield even though Ash was delayed by Team Rocket's interference. The match began once Ash finally arrived. Ritchie won because, at the very end, Ash's Charizard refused to fight Sparky and took a nap on the battlefield instead. Though Ritchie lost his next match to Assunta, he still reached the Top 8 in the League.

Pokémon the Series: Gold and Silver
Sometime after the League, when Ash and his friends traveled to Johto, Ritchie became fascinated by a mysterious Pokémon said to inhabit the Whirl Islands, which turned out to be a Lugia.

Ritchie reunited with Ash and his friends on Ogi Isle, beginning in "The Mystery is History." After spotting a baby Lugia named Silver with Oliver, Butch and Cassidy attacked with their Pokémon, and Ritchie and Ash defended Silver alongside their own Pokémon. Their actions forced Butch and Cassidy to retreat until later, when a submarine was dispatched to capture Silver.

In "A Parent Trapped!", Ritchie told the parent Lugia what had happened to Silver, which caused it to briefly attack them. Ritchie and the group later found Silver in a cage at a base. Ritchie and Ash battled Butch and Cassidy in an attempt to stall them, but they were badly beaten and the parent Lugia was captured.

In "A Promise is a Promise," Ritchie and the group were freed from a cage by Oliver. Ritchie and Ash took on Butch, Cassidy, and several Team Rocket Grunts with their Pokémon and easily defeated them. They reached the room where Silver was being held but were stopped by Dr. Namba. Ritchie and Ash battled him with their Pikachu. Ritchie also managed to destroy the controller of the rage machine powering Dr. Namba's Electabuzz, defeat the Team Rocket scientist, and take Silver away from him. With both Lugia reunited, Ritchie stayed on the island with Oliver to continue exploring the Whirl Islands, while Ash and his friends departed for Olivine City.

Pokémon Chronicles
Ritchie visited Professor Oak's Laboratory in "Oaknapped!". He and Tracey discovered that Professor Oak had disappeared from the Seafoam Island TV station where he was scheduled for a live television appearance. With help from Ritchie's Taillow, Rose, they later found him in an abandoned warehouse. They battled Butch and Cassidy, and when Tracey's Scyther was defeated by Butch's Mightyena, Ritchie handled the two Team Rocket agents and won. Professor Oak was grateful and even invited Ritchie back to Pallet Town to help install a security system in his lab.

In "Celebi and Joy!", Ritchie was passing through Marion Town when he saw construction workers demolishing an old Pokémon Center. He sent out Zippo and Sparky to stop them from causing further damage, and the resident Nurse Joys were grateful. They invited Ritchie inside and shared the Center's history, including the passing of the elder Nurse Joy's childhood friend Nick. The Center also had a connection to Celebi, who later appeared before Ritchie and took him back in time. Ritchie arrived in a forest where he saved a young Nurse Joy from falling off a cliff. He and Nurse Joy then arrived in the Marion Town of the past, where Ritchie encountered the same Celebi and met Nick and his father.

Nurse Joy went missing during a storm, and Ritchie joined Nick in searching for her. Ritchie found Nurse Joy unconscious by the Celebi shrine. Just as a lightning bolt was about to strike, Celebi appeared and protected Ritchie, Nick, and Nurse Joy. The next day, Ritchie rode Nurse Joy's Ponyta after Nick and his father on the day a rock slide would have killed them. Ritchie convinced the two to return to Marion Town for a party Nurse Joy was holding, and the rock slide passed right behind him.

With that accomplished, Ritchie was returned to the present with the timeline altered. He saw the same construction crew from before, now restoring the Pokémon Center instead of demolishing it. Nick was also alive and serving as the mayor of Marion Town.

Ritchie's final speaking appearance was in "The Search for the Legend," where he was aboard the S.S. Anne when he met Silver and a pair of mysterious doctors who were actually Butch and Cassidy. During a pit stop at One Island, he learned more about their plan to see a Moltres and climbed to the summit of Mt. Magma with them. When Moltres revealed itself the following day, the doctors revealed their true identities and attempted to capture Moltres. Ritchie and Silver battled together and defeated the duo. After Silver battled Moltres, Mt. Magma erupted, and Silver's Salamence flew him and Ritchie to safety as Moltres departed. Silver chose to wait a little longer for Moltres to return. Ritchie parted ways with Silver on a boat while Silver stayed behind on One Island.

Pokémon Journeys: The Series
In "Pride of a Champion!", Ritchie made a brief cameo alongside Sparky, watching the Masters Eight Tournament match between Lance and Diantha on television.

Trivia

  • Every Pokémon Ritchie is confirmed to own was either previously owned by Ash at some point or is an evolved form of one.

Codex Statistics Questions

Q: Shouldn't at least late series Pokémon get Faster Than Light due to being able to dodge solar beam?

A: Solar beam is absorbing light and then shooting out a blast, it is not a light speed attack but an energy blast that absorbs light energy. On top of this, Pokémon cannot dodge this move without lowering the opponents accuracy or raising their own speed. Dazzling Gleam is a flash of light that is also 100% accuracy. Flash which is a literal flash of light is 100% accuracy. So it's clear light speed attacks are generally unmissable unless their accuracy drop or a character ups their speed to make it harder to tag them. Further examples of them not being this speed, Dragonite is pretty consistently stated in its pokedex as an impressive speed feat for it to circle the globe in 16 hours, and Garchomp is treated as impressive for being able to keep up with planes and fly at sonic speeds. Pidgeot is hyped for being able to fly at Mach 2[24].
