The Doll (Bloodborne)
The Doll is a character in Bloodborne who initially appears as a lifeless porcelain figure outside the Workshop in the Hunter's Dream. She comes to life later on and becomes the Hunter's guide for leveling up. The Doll plays a significant role in the game's story.
To interact with her for the first time, the player needs one Insight. If the player's Insight drops to zero, she will return to her inanimate state, though the Hunter can still interact with her to level up.
Background
Gehrman created the Doll with care to keep him company and to assist the many hunters who would visit the Hunter's Dream.
The Doll is modeled after Lady Maria, a student Gehrman was fond of. After Maria's disappearance, Gehrman obsessively recreated her as the Doll. The Doll shares Maria's appearance, size, and voice, but lacks her personality, which led Gehrman to lose interest in her.
The Doll is soft-spoken and polite. She holds the Hunter in high regard, treating them with great respect. Having been created by humans, she is unsure whether her love for the Hunter is genuine or simply artificial, a question she constantly contemplates.
The Doll is loyal to the Hunter, accepting her role and believing that serving them is her purpose. This is evident in all endings, as she either continues to serve the Hunter or wishes them well.
Appearance
General Description: The Doll is a lifelike porcelain figure standing at the same height and size as Lady Maria. She has delicate features, with smooth, pale skin and an elegant, serene presence.
Facial Features: The Doll's face is soft and serene, with a calm expression. Her eyes are large and expressive, often conveying kindness and respect. Her lips are subtly shaped, giving her a gentle appearance.
Clothing/Outfit: The Doll wears an intricate, elegant dress, resembling Victorian-era clothing. The dress is predominantly white, adorned with lace and ribbons. She also wears a small bonnet, adding to her delicate appearance. Her attire complements her role as a graceful, nurturing figure.
Special Features: As a porcelain doll brought to life, her skin has a smooth, unblemished texture resembling fine porcelain. She does not have the warmth or vitality of a living being but moves with grace and poise, giving the impression of a living statue.
Alternate Forms/Disguises: The Doll does not have alternate forms, but her appearance changes when her status as a living entity is influenced by the Hunter's Insight, returning to her inanimate porcelain state when there is no Insight.
Personality
- Gentle and Caring: The Doll is a tender and nurturing presence in the Hunter's Dream, always speaking with soft, polite tones. She views the Hunter with deep respect, calling them "honourable hunter" and offering encouragement and strength throughout their journey. Despite her artificial origins, she seems to hold genuine affection for the Hunter, pondering if her feelings are real or merely a product of her creation.
- Devoted and Loyal: She serves the Hunter with unwavering dedication, believing it to be her purpose to aid them in their quest. Her role in the Dream is to support and bolster the Hunter, always ready to help them channel the echoes of blood into strength. This devotion is evident in her interactions, where she reassures the Hunter and constantly offers words of comfort.
- Philosophical and Reflective: The Doll often contemplates the nature of her existence, pondering her relationship with the Hunter and her own origins. She reflects on the idea of love, questioning whether her affection for the Hunter is genuine, given that she is a creation of human hands. Her musings on these topics add depth to her character, showing a longing for something beyond her prescribed role.
- Inquisitive and Nostalgic: As the Doll observes the events unfolding around her, she occasionally reflects on the past, remembering the many hunters who have come before the current Hunter. She speaks of the graves in the Hunter’s Dream and the passing of time with a quiet melancholy. She also hints at memories of Gehrman, her creator, and expresses a sense of uncertainty about his true feelings towards her.
- Supportive and Sympathetic: Throughout the game, the Doll expresses empathy for the Hunter, offering words of comfort during difficult times. Whether it's helping the Hunter deal with their burdens or offering a moment of solace after a significant battle, she is a constant, soothing presence. Her willingness to accept her role, even if it means her own existential questions remain unanswered, showcases her compassion.
- Subtle Emotional Growth: The Doll's personality subtly evolves over the course of the game. After certain events, such as the Hunter defeating major enemies like Rom or Lady Maria, the Doll expresses a new sense of awareness and emotional depth. Her subtle changes imply that she is experiencing a form of personal growth, challenging her understanding of her own nature and purpose. Her interactions with the Hunter convey a deep emotional connection, reflecting her longing for affection, purpose, and understanding in a world full of uncertainty and pain.
Relationships
Gehrman
Gehrman is her creator, and she seems to be fond of him.
The description of her Doll Set notes how Gehrman had a deep love for the doll due to the fine craftsmanship of her outfit[1].
The Doll
The Doll exists within the dream to look after the Hunter. She asks the Hunter to pursue the echoes of blood and she shall channel them into their strength.
She tells the Hunter as he hunts beasts she will be there for them within the Hunter's Dream to embolden their sickly spirit.
The Doll will feel joy if The Hunter gives her a small hair ornament[2].
In rare moments the Hunter can find the doll praying for their safety[3].
The Doll makes mention to how the Hunters have told her about the church[4], which makes her question if gods love their creations[5], asking if the Hunter would ever think to love her as she is merely a creation by humans, while stating that she loves the Hunter as that's how she's been made[6].

Notable Techniques
Channel Blood Echoes
The Doll uses the blood echoes the Hunter grabbed, and channels them into the Hunter, greatly improving statistics such as: Vitality, Endurance, Strength, Skill, Bloodtinge, and Arcane.
Other
Standard Tactics: The Doll will channel blood echoes for any Hunter that approaches her, being kind and supportive to them. Even if the Hunter attacks her, she will not fight back.
Weaknesses: She can only be seen by those who have gained Insight[42], and only within the dream[43]. Her body within the real world cannot move or interact[44], asides from slightly twitching her finger[45].
Trivia
- Doll will come to "life" after The Hunter gains 1 Insight and will return to "lifeless" state when Insight drops back to 0.
- Even when The Hunter kills her they can still level up by interacting with her body, this is common practice for speedruns in NG as it skips her dialogue.
- She will not drop Blood Dreg when Corruption Oath Caryll rune is equipped.
- She will react to The Hunter's gestures when in front of her.
- It is possible to not get Doll's unique dialogue after defeating Lady Maria of the Astral Clocktower and Orphan of Kos (both bosses from the Bloodborne: The Old Hunters). If The Hunter has already killed Mergo's Wet Nurse, Doll will not provide them with these two pieces of dialogue and will point them to the end-game instead.
- When the Hunter finds the Doll inanimate at the old abandoned workshop, her finger twitches (which is deliberate animation), but nothing else. There is an unused animation of her inanimate form being knocked to the ground, and her finger stops twitching afterwards[46].
- If one zooms in on the Doll's brooch, they can see a reflection of the Hunter's Dream, of course, but the reflection shows an incredibly old, alpha design where corpses wearing top-hats cradling skulls rest against each headstone.
- Evetta Muradasilova voice acted both Doll and Maiden in Black from Demon's Souls, and later Lady Maria in The Old Hunters DLC.
- There is clear evidence about lore connection between The Doll and Winter Lanterns.
- It is possible to make Doll be stuck in her leveling up animation.
- In one of her extremely rare dialogue, doll is humming a Russian lullaby, The lullaby in question seems to be Bayu-Bayushki-Bayu[47].
- Some people believe this is unused dialogue, however this is not the case. This dialogue existed in the very first patch of Bloodborne, but was removed in later patches, with the original patch having her lullaby.
- The Doll will sometimes fall asleep or move to the gravestone near the house.
- Interestingly, the Doll stands about a foot or 0.3048 meters taller than the player.
- Her connection to Lady Maria, aside from just her outward look and voice, is exhibited by the themes of her clothing, since Maria wore a brooch of a lumenflower and favored the symbol as her own; Gehrman reproduced this motif in the Doll's attire by depicting lumenflower patterns and even a lumenflower necklace.
- The Doll Set also reads: "Discarded doll clothing, likely a spare for dress-up. A deep love for the doll can be surmised by the fine craftsmanship of this article, and the care with which it was kept. It borderlines on mania, and exudes a slight warmth." This suggests that Gehrman's obsessions may be more than just Maria.
- If the Hunter uses the Make Contact gesture and waits for their arms to change sides, the Doll will actually applaud, as if congratulating the Hunter for doing the gesture correctly. This is a hint towards what the player must do to get the Moon rune from the Brain of Mensis.

- ↑ Bloodborne "Drained of Blood" Interview: "Interviewer: So the world of Bloodborne has the Hunter's Dream, and then several areas referred to as nightmares. There's a world that serves as the game's “reality” as well, right?
Miyazaki: Ah, so you're asking if areas like Yharnam are meant to be reality? Well, that has some implications within the story. Yharnam at night, with the Hunters and all, truly is a nightmare-like world, but is it actually a nightmare? Or was it? That kind of thing. I think different gamers will have different interpretations of that, especially depending on which ending they reach. That's something deliberate on our part. This might be going off-topic a bit, but I like reading about how gamers interpret or think about the story and world of my games. So I don't want to rob them of that space for open interpretation. That, after all, is part of the fun I get to have after development (laughs). Still, this can often be a delicate thing, and I'm not exactly an expert at it either, so I can't be confident yet about whether it'll go well or not. Apologies in advance if it doesn't, then. - ↑ Bloodborne Killing the Doll
