Background

Ichigo Kurosaki is the main protagonist of the manga and anime series, Bleach. Ever since he was a young boy, Ichigo found that he had the ability to see ghosts, which immediately set him apart from his peers. At the age of 15, Ichigo meets a woman named Rukia Kuchiki, a Soul Reaper who is forced to transfer her powers to him after a dangerous encounter with a Hollow.

Ichigo becomes a Deputy Soul Reaper, unlocking power far beyond anyone has seen, at the cost of being forced to participate in the duties of a Soul Reaper. He can now conjure a fully-formed Hollow mask while still retaining his own identity, allowing for him to gain massive power without losing himself. After taking many hits, his Visored mask will crack and eventually disappear, requiring time before it can be used again.

• Vasto Lorde: After being thoroughly defeated by Ulquiorra Cifer in Hueco Mundo, Ichigo realized that Orihime Inoue was facing incredible danger. In a desperate attempt to protect her, Ichigo pulled out all of the inner Hollow power within him, and took the form of the most powerful version of Hollows, a Vasto Lorde. In this form, Ichigo loses all sense of reason and intelligent thought, only desiring animalistic destruction. His power grows immensely in this form despite the loss of reason.

• Dangai: A state beyond Ichigo's original Bankai form, which has been coined the "Dangai" state by fans. In order to match Sōsuke Aizen's overwhelming power, Isshin Kurosaki took Ichigo into a space known as the Dangai, where he would experience three months of training within a single hour. The Quincy and Hollow sides of Zangetsu combined and gave their power to Ichigo, unlocking within him this new, extremely powerful state.

Once Ichigo recognizes that one half of Zangetsu within him is actually his inner Quincy, he reaches his True Shikai state, now with two Zangetsu swords at his side. This new Shikai form is far more powerful than the last, having been directly compared to Ichigo's Dangai state.

• Merged Hollow Shikai: After failing to stop Yhwach from absorbing the Soul King, Ichigo calls upon his inner Hollow and infuses it with his physical self. Due to the nature of Hollowfication, this unique Shikai state is leaps and bounds beyond his regular self in terms of power.

• Merged Hollow Bankai: The evolved form of his Merged Hollow Shikai state. Much like any other Bankai, it increases his power far beyond the limits of Shikai, and grants him a new sword as well. This form was so powerful that it was terrifying even to Yhwach, who needed to plan tricks in order to take it out before it could become a threat to him.

• True Bankai: Ichigo's ultimate form. After Yhwach destroyed Ichigo's Bankai a second time, and dissolved his Merged Hollow state, Ichigo was left as his base Soul Reaper self. Once Shūkurō Tsukishima restored his True Tensa Zangetsu, Ichigo was left in his True Bankai state. This state went on to defeat Yhwach once and for all, and was used by him for many years to come.

Because of this, his Zangetsu actually manifests as two separate blades, one being the Quincy side while the other is the Hollow side. Both swords are equally Zangetsu physically manifested.

Notable Techniques

• Getsuga Tensho: Ichigo's primary technique, which he can use in nearly any known form. After charging spiritual energy in his blade, he unleashes it in the form of a blade beam. Usually gold in color, it can sometimes be completely black when he is in his Bankai state or any of his Hollow forms. This beam is extremely powerful, and Ichigo usually turns to it when he needs a heavy-hitting attack.

• Fullbring Getsuga Tensho: A Getsuga Tensho comprised entirely of Fullbring power, which Ichigo utilizes in his Human or Fullbringer forms. He unleashes this from the sword that was formed through his Deputy Soul Reaper Badge, though presumably he can use it simply through Fullbring power alone. It functions identically to a standard Getsuga Tensho.

• Cero: This attack is one that is standard amongst Hollows, notably used by Menos Grande. When Ichigo is put into his Vasto Lorde form, he is also able to utilize Cero as a result. • Gran Rey Cero: Ichigo's most powerful attack, which he can only use in his Merged Hollow forms. The Gran Rey Cero is the combination of a Cero with Ichigo's own blood, resulting in an extremely powerful crescent beam of purple energy. Since Ichigo's blood contains Soul Reaper, Quincy, Hollow, Fullbring, and regular Human powers, the Gran Rey Cero has a lot of power to pull from, and is thus immensely powerful.

• Mugetsu: The ultimate technique that Ichigo has access to when he utilizes the Final Getsuga Tensho state. Mugetsu creates a giant wave of black energy, which covers a huge radius. Anything caught within this radius of black energy is dissolved until they are reduced to nothing. This attack is very powerful as a result, but has a huge drawback. After using it, all of Ichigo's supernatural Soul Reaper abilities are stripped from him, leaving him as a regular human.

Standard Tactics:

Ichigo is highly adept in physical combat, usually prone to attacking with his hands and feet before he even thinks to use his sword. As such, he will usually start by unleashing punches or kicks, and will only become a Soul Reaper if absolutely necessary; this is because, since he cannot become a Soul Reaper freely at this time, he greatly loathes the idea of needing to give control of his physical body over to Kon. When he awakens his Shikai state, he is much more geared towards fighting with his sword (as it has turned into a much more useable shape), and will use blade beams if necessary.

Ichigo will usually start fights by unleashing a flurry of sword attacks, usually attempting to overwhelm with his speed and strength. He will use shockwaves if needed, or blade beams, though he usually just relies on standard attacks and Zangetsu's assistance to pull him through. He now also uses Getsuga Tensho, which has become his standard move to use for ranged combat. Once he reaches Bankai, Ichigo will often try to confuse opponents with his speed, by leaving dozens of afterimages to throw them off. Zangetsu is constantly fighting for control of Ichigo's body once he reaches Bankai, so when he does inevitably take control, Ichigo is much more violent and incapable of feeling pain, notably resulting in him bum-rushing enemies and even grabbing their blades without care.

Prior to his training in the Dangai, Ichigo learned to control his Hollow self and now no longer gets possessed by it. Instead, in addition to his standard tactics previously, he will also often activate his Visored Mask for an extra boost in power, speed, and greater regeneration. However, should this Hollow mask break, he will be unable to use its power for a while. Ichigo has also learned to both fly and cloak his spiritual power at this point, which he uses quite frequently. Should he suffer fatal wounds in battle, or even die, Ichigo will use his willpower and love of his friends to compel him back to life, resulting in his Vasto Lorde transformation; in this state, Ichigo is completely animalistic and brutal, attacking anyone and anything within earshot by using his sword, his limbs, or (most notably) large Cero explosions. Following his training in the Dangai, Ichigo no longer uses any of his Hollow abilities. Instead, in his new ascended Bankai state (dubbed Dangai to differentiate it), he will fight as he standardly does; using his speed and power to try and overwhelm opponents with basic sword strikes. This does, however, come with the added effect of his sword now giving off powerful shockwaves with its basic swings, that can harm things from extremely far away. As a last resort, Ichigo will activate the Final Getsuga Tensho, where he becomes Getsuga Tensho itself. In this form, he unleashes one simple area-of-effect attack that completely engulfs an entire area with black energy, and reduces anything caught within it to nothingness. After using this ability, unfortunately, Ichigo also loses all of his powers and is left in his ordinary human body.

At the beginning of the arc, when Ichigo had nothing to rely on but the Fullbring power he was being trained to use, he fights more distinctly than in any other form. Ichigo often attempts to make up for the Soul Reaper powers he lost, by using Fullbring to amplify his jumps and his acceleration. He can also transform his Deputy Soul Reaper Badge into a sword using Fullbring, which allows for him to fight somewhat normally, and even unleash Getsuga Tensho like normal. He is notably more acrobatic in his Fullbringer states, likely to make up for what he lost. After losing his Complete Fullbring form and receiving a large transfer of Reiatsu, Ichigo has regained his Soul Reaper powers. Though his swords are different (notably much much larger than normal), he still fights like normal: bum-rushing opponents, overwhelming them with his spiritual power and his speed, and using Getsuga Tensho at a distance. The only addition would be his latent Fullbring power which he can use to enhance his attributes and walk on water.

With the arrival of the Quincy in this arc, Ichigo's latent Quincy powers have awakened as well, allowing for his body to instinctively activate his Blut Vene, which will drastically increase his offensive and defensive abilities, as well as protect him from most forms of physical harm. Eventually, Ichigo also accesses his True Soul Reaper forms, which are simply more powerful versions of his regular forms, and as such he doesn't fight much differently. The biggest difference would be in his True Shikai form, in which he wields two blades, which allows for unique attacks such as the star-shaped Getsuga Jujisho. His True Bankai form has its Zanpakuto concealed within an outer shell, though this gets broken off almost as soon as he attacks. When fusing his inner Hollow with himself fully, Ichigo is able to call upon his Hollow powers while still maintaining full control of his body. This grants him not only his regular Soul Reaper abilities, but also the great regeneration power of the Hollow, as well as the Cero and Gran Rey Cero attacks to be used as another means of long-ranged combat.

Weaknesses: Ichigo is often noted throughout the series to be headstrong to a fault, as he will brashly rush into highly dangerous situations in order to save friends/family, or simply prove himself. His willpower leads him to continue fights even if he is mortally wounded, as he is simply too prideful to allow anything to stop him until he dies. He has found himself having his powers stolen by villains many times in the past. Using Mugetsu will strip him of all of his Soul Reaper powers.
