Background
Curly Brace is the deuteragonist of Cave Story, who was also the game's third boss. She, like Quote, is a soldier robot who was sent to the Island to destroy the dark power hidden there. Like Quote, she can wield a wide variety of weapons without any special training, and can withstand incredible amounts of damage. Unlike Quote, Curly has an energy shield that raises automatically to defend her from missile weapons, essentially making her immune to them.
This dropdown contains the synopsis of Curly Brace's story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise! |
---|
Ten years prior to the events of Cave Story, an army of robot soldiers was sent to the Island to claim the Demon Crown, a very dangerous artifact which bestows great powers upon the person who wears it. The robots specifically targeted Mimigas in their assault, killing countless masses of them (including the humans that attempted to protect them) without any notable provocation. During the conflict, Quote and Curly Brace were constructed by an unknown party, and also sent to the island. Unlike the other robots sent there, Quote and Curly were ordered to destroy the Demon Crown rather than claim it for any owner. They arrived later than the other robots; by the time they reached the Island, much of it was in ruins. Death and carnage was everywhere, the Mimiga race became an endangered species and the defending humans are wiped out. By the time they found the Demon Crown, a human named Miakid had already claimed it, becoming the third being in history to do so. Quote and Curly fought Miakid, and managed to fatally wound him, but were both seriously damaged. While Quote was completely incapacitated and separated from her, Curly Brace managed to reach the Sand Zone before losing consciousness there. Shortly after the war, she woke up with near-complete amnesia (remembering only her name and vague details about the war), surrounded by four newborn Mimiga children who had been orphaned during the battles. She decided to adopt them, calling them the Colons, and lived with them peacefully until the Doctor arrived on the Island some time later. After retrieving the Demon Crown, the Doctor and his minions begin roaming around the Island, kidnapping Mimigas. Before long, Quote arrives in the Sand Zone, where he stumbles upon Curly and the Mimiga she is protecting. Curly immediately recognizes Quote as a robot soldier, and believing that he is programmed to kill Mimigas on sight, she attacks him to defend her adopted children. Quote is victorious, but assures Curly that he means no harm to the Colons. The relieved Curly then becomes friends with Quote. She is later found in the Labriynth as Misery attacked her and sent her there, she is injured until Quote gets the cure-all for her, helping her wounds. Afterwards, she helps Quote get to the core where they fight the Core itself. After defeating it, the room is flooded, with Quote nearly drowning, Curly sacrifices herself and gives Quote her air tank, by this point it is either the end of Curly or if Quote gets the tow rope then he can carry her on his back and carries her out of the area. Quote then can leave her on a bed in the Waterway, however he must drained the water from her or else she'll end up drowning. She and Quote are separated when the strong currents while leaving the waterway split them up and Quote finds her again in the Planatation with memory loss. Getting a mushroom for her that restores her memories, she reveals to Quote the truth about both of them and gives him the iron bond as a signal of their strong bond. Curly is not found again unless one partakes in the best ending, where she's found knocked out before the big gauntlet, she aids Quote in defeating Ballos, after which the room starts closing in on them and they're about to be crushed, right before they're crushed however, Balrog jumps down and saves them, flying away. Balrog reveals that defeating Ballos lifted the curse from him and Misery, with Misery telling Balrog to rescue Quote and Curly. Curly then decides she wants to find a peaceful place to live with Quote. Balrog asks if he can accompany them and Curly obliges, ending their story. |

Other
Standard Tactics: Curly will either utilize the machine gun, polar star, or Nemesis in combat. For Curly Brace Mode, Curly is a wildcard controlled by the player, thus he'll use whatever weapon best fits the situation.
Weaknesses:
- Unique Weaknesses: Curly cannot fight without weapons.
- Weapon Weaknesses: The Nemesis gets weaker as it levels up.
- Robot Weaknesses: Robots manufactured on the surface have limited aquatic mobility, in the case of flooding, the system will automatically initiate a shutdown to prevent from short circuiting.
Note
- Curly Mode is the entire original Cave Story but playing as Curly instead, thus anything from the regular mode of Cave Story applies to her.
- Curly in Blade Stranger has her data summoned, due to this it holds no contradictions with Cave Story and can be used[2].
- Quote and Curly were not murderous robots, they were robots sent after the previous ones trying to destroy the incredible power.
Trivia
- Curly displays the ability to create an energy shield (which is more then likely the Air Tank's bubble, since it uses the same sprite) to specifically deflect Missiles during her battle with Quote.
- In the beta-version of Cave Story, Curly Brace was the name of the female android protagonist, but had Quote's sprites with a different color-scheme.
- Curly, like Quote, is named after a punctuation mark often used in programming.
- In the original Story Mode, Curly Brace's antenna are green, but in Curly Story, they are purple.
- With the seasonal graphics enabled on Halloween, Curly appears to wear armor identical to Samus' Chozo Power Suit from the Metroid video game series.
- Even though she's a robot, Curly Brace has a belly button.
