Even during his death, after being attacked by a snake and having his throat slit, he was still able to give Harry Potter his memories before dying. In addition to this, his mental strength was rather great, as he managed to play a double-agent for Dumbledore for 17 years, which required mentally blocking his love for Lily Potter and his alleigance with Dumbledore from Voldemort, while also allowing Voldemort to see into his mind enough so he was not suspicious.)
