Background

Reptile is a Saurian from the Planet Zaterra, who was one of the very few survivors of the genocide of his race. Reptile was taken in by the illustrious Shang Tsung, and made into his body-guard for the coming years. Described as a horrific reptilian creature disguised as a human, Reptile hides in the shadows waiting to defeat anyone who may attack his master.

Reptile’s servitude would be extended to Shao Kahn as well, who sent Reptile out on several assassination missions, and eventually caused for him to get tangled up as a General of Shinnok’s Army of Darkness as well. Reptile proved himself again and again to be a formidable and terrifying opponent, although his physical appearance notably began to transform back into that of his regular reptilian self.

During the time of the Deadly Alliance, Shang Tsung and Quan-Chi teamed up to defeat Shao Kahn while Reptile was out on a mission. Falling into extremely emotional turmoil over not being able to protect his master, Reptile succumbed to numerous hallucinations that caused him to unknowingly attack people.

Eventually, during these horrible emotional outbursts, Reptile ran into a woman named Nitara, who granted him the Kirehashi sword and took him in as her servant. Although Reptile had found a new master he swore to protect, he could still not get over his failure with Shao Kahn. Nitara later revealed she was simply manipulating Reptile, which led to Reptile’s body being used as a vessel for Onaga.

Thankfully, Reptile was able to secure his separation from Onaga, and regain his true self; thanks to Nightwolf binding Onaga’s soul to Netherrealm. Finally free, Reptile was able to rejoin the Forces of Darkness, but was finally killed in the climactic Battle of Armageddon.
