Background

Solid Snake is a legendary mercenary who stopped the Metal Gear of Outer Heaven seven years ago. Seven years after the Outer Heaven uprising, a new Metal Gear prototype (codenamed Gander) has been stolen by a separatist guerrilla group in the region of Gindra in Central Africa. The Gindra Liberation Front (or GLF), led by the mercenary Augustine Eguabon, plans on using the prototype as a means of achieving victory in an ongoing civil war. Solid Snake, the FOXHOUND operative responsible for the destruction of the original Metal Gear seven years before, is brought back from his retirement in Alaska. His mission is to infiltrate the group's headquarters Galuade, the fortress that was formerly Outer Heaven.

During the course of his mission, Snake teams up with Sgt. Christine Jenner, a surviving member of the Delta Force that was sent before him to retrieve Gander. The GLF are assisted by four surviving members of Black Chamber, a defunct special forces unit whose members are given animal-themed codenames similar to FOXHOUND. They are led by Black Arts Viper, a boobytrap specialist who wields a prosthetic left arm. Joining him are Slasher Hawk, an Australian Aborigine armed with two giant boomerangs who is accompanied in battle by a hawk; Marionette Owl, a former serial killer endowed with owl-like nocturnal vision and attacks with his two bunraku puppets; and Pyro Bison, a pyromaniac armed with a specially prepared flamethrower and fuel pack. As Snake goes deeper into Galuade and confronts each member of Black Chamber, he uncovers a conspiracy involving the GLF and US Government.

Equipment

  • Five-seveN: The Five-seveN is a pistol designed by Belgian weapons manufacturer, FN Herstal. The Five-seveN was developed to complement its P90 PDW (Personal Defense Weapon). Like the P90, the Five-seveN also shares the same cartridge (5.7mm x 28mm) that is designed to pierce standard body armor. Some other advantages of the pistol include it's low recoil (due to the 5.7mm round), a large 20-round magazine, and weighing in at 726 g (1.6 pounds), it's reasonably light-weight. In spite of this, the Five-seveN has not been widely adopted, primarily due to its high-cost and unusual concept. Even still, it has proven to be a successful design. The capitalization of the "F" and the "N" in Five-seveN are references to the manufacturer of the weapon, Fabrique Nationale d'Herstal, known more commonly as FN Herstal, or simply FN.
  • Nikita: The Nikita was a miniature cruise missile launcher. It used a pulsed rocket engine and sophisticated TV guidance system which allowed the operator to steer the unusually slow projectile in flight. Its functions were based on the micro air vehicles, and was primarily a scouting device. However, it was equipped with a warhead in case it was to be used as a weapon.
  • Flamethrower: A flamethrower is a mechanical incendiary weapon designed to project a long controllable stream of fire, either by ignited flammable liquid or a long gas flame. Snake improvised from lacquer spray and lighter to make his own makeshift flamethrower.
  • R4 Assault Rifle: The R4-series of assault rifles was an assault rifle developed by Lyttleton Engineering Works in 1980 for the South African forces. They came in three versions: The R4 itself, a lighter version with shorter barrel and overall length, the R5, and the most light version meant for tank crews, the R6.

*Electromagnetic Grenade: The Electromagnetic grenade was a disposable EA (Electronic device) utilized after the downfall of the Patriots. Electronic grenades are capable of emitting electromagnetic pulses for a limited period of time. The EMPs likewise temporarily disable any UGs (Unmanned Gears) and cyborgs in the immediate area. They saw usage in 2018. Although it worked when cyborgs were only just beginning to be mass-produced, more recent models of cyborgs and UGs are capable of shutting down circuitry when an EMP surge was detected, leaving no permanent damage for any cyborgs or UGs in the process.

  • Grenade: A grenade is a handheld explosive device that comes in several forms. It is either thrown or launched. The explosive power of anti-personnel grenades is usually supplied by Composition B, which consisted of a mixture of 40% TNT and 60% RDX.
  • Stun Grenade: The stun grenade, also known as a flashbang, is a handheld grenade designed to emit a bright light rated at 8 million candela and a 150 decibel noise.

Other

Standard Tactics: Snake will opt for stealth, using his radar to track the opponent and either taking them out with a gun or rendering them unconscious with a stun grenade.

Weaknesses: Before meeting Chris, Snake was essentially in a nigh-suicidal state, subconsciously wanting to die or be killed on the battlefield.
