A midsize subspecies within the grub-dog family, the spotty bulbear's unique feeding habits set it apart from other grub-dogs. The spotty bulbear patrols a set path searching for prey, instead of passively feeding on creatures that wander into a limited territorial range. When entering bulbear habitat, it is wise to proceed with extreme caution until the bulbear's patrol path can be clearly identified.

For an unrivaled green curry, peel away the spotty bulbear's skin, pulverize the juicy innards, and stew until curiously fragrant.

It's sorta like... the rare, limited-edition version of regular bulborbs. I'm much too afraid to get close to them in the dark caves where they live, so I'm thinking about bringing a Bomb Rock next time, couldn't hurt!

~ Alph's research notes on the Spotty Bulbear

The red-on-black thing is very bold, but it's a viscous predator, soooo points off for that. It's big and tough and never backs down even when it probably should. Like some captains I could name.
~ Brittany's research notes on the Spotty Bulbear

The first problem with this guy is that he never sleeps. The second problem is that he can gulp a whole platoon of Pikmin in one move. Well, not on my watch, buster! I'll make you wash down that meal with a dessert of pain!
~ Charlie's research notes on the Spotty Bulbear

Possibly the most vicious of the Bulborb/Bulbear family, the Spotty Bulbear feasts on Pikmin and doesn't give up. Have one group distract the villain while you send another behind it to attack.
~ Nintendo Player's Guide
The Spotty Bulbear is extremely durable, and its wide jaws allow it to gobble a great amount of Pikmin with each attack. To avoid a prolonged and costly battle, use Bomb Rocks to attack this creature from a safe distance.
~ Pikmin 3 Prima Guide

Background

Spotty Bulbears are creatures found in all three Pikmin games that resemble Red Bulborbs with a different color and stature, and bigger mouths with wider lips. They are black with red spots, and their face is a creamy yellow. Its large mouth allows it to eat Pikmin rapidly, making it a formidable foe.

In Pikmin 2, these enemies are often found with a number of Dwarf Bulbears following it as a source of protection and general aid. They are notoriously difficult in every game they appear in. In Pikmin, they are spread all throughout The Distant Spring.

This dropdown contains the synopsis of the Spotty Bulbear's biology.

The Spotty Bulbear, like all Grub-Dogs, has a mammalian appearance, bulbous eyes, which are purple (red in the first game), as well as the short stubby legs, sizable girth, and spotty backside. It may be worth noting that their lips are very thick and chapped as opposed to other Grub-Dogs, who have thin lips or lack them at all. Its backside is black with red spots (which pulsated in the first game) and it has a creamy yellow face. Unlike its cousins, however, the Spotty Bulbear has a bigger, wider mouth to match its girth. Its size also gives it more durability to Pikmin attacks and Bomb Rocks Olimar notes that this creature "has a certain indefatigability," which is supported mainly in the second game and partly the third game, as the Spotty Bulbear is not only sleepless in both games, but in the second game, it will also revive if defeated and left alone. One can then conclude that the Spotty Bulbear is at a high point in the food chain.

General Information

Name: Spotty Bulbear

Origin: Pikmin

Sex: Varies

Age: Unknown, due to their high status amongst the food chain, they likely live for several months to potentially years

Classification: Oculus terriblis dotticum, Mammoth, Grub-dog species

Status: Active (Is one of the most prominent species on PNF-404, mostly in darker environments and caverns)

Alignment: Unaligned (The wildlife on PNF-404 don't follow moral ethics and simply survive like traditional animals in the wilderness)

Codex Statistics

Grade: B

Tier: 10-C, Higher with Penetration Damage

Cardinality: Finite

Dimensionality: 3-D

Attack Potency: Subhuman level (Can harm Olimar, and can easily eat Standard Pikmin. Can eat Purple Pikmin though they normally die to them rather easily. Superior to the Red Bulborb, due to their tougher stature, which can launch a tire rim several meters into the air), Higher with Penetration Damage (Their saber-like teeth are designed for crushing animal exoskeletons)

Durability: Subhuman level (Far tougher than the Red Bulborb variant, with them even being capable of surviving Bomb Rock explosions which are capable of producing explosions this potent. It takes a solid number of Pikmin to defeat it, with a frontal assault being devastating to them)

Striking Strength: Subhuman Class, Higher with Penetration Damage

Lifting Strength: At least Subhuman (Comparable to the Red Bulborb which can kick a tire rim several meters into the air)

Travel Speed: Superhuman+ (Can keep up with Pikmin on foot who can easily outpace pellet shots from the Gatling Groink which can travel at 168 m/s on average)

Attack Speed: Supersonic (Can tag and eat Pikmin along with Olimar himself, and should be comparable to wildlife that use electricity-based attacks)

Reaction Speed: Supersonic (Comparable to the Pikmin themselves and can quickly awaken to fight them while being swarmed)

Stamina: Above Average (Can remain active in both the daytime and at night)

Range: Below Average Melee physically, Higher the larger they grow

Intelligence: Animalistic (Seems to lack enough understanding to the point where if the enemy runs away or hides and are out of the bulborb's sight, they will go back to sleep despite being attacked. Despite this, their more iconic cousin have shown basic thinking capabilities when faced by an unknown threat)

Powers and Techniques

Superhuman Physical Characteristics, Small Size (Bug-Sized normally; The average Bulborb reaches roughly four-to-five centimeters in height when fully grown. Small Animal Sized when overgrown; Overgrown Bulborbs can see over tall patches of grass), Natural Weaponry and Penetration Damage (Physical Penetration; Has saber-like teeth which are used for cracking the exoskeletons of prey), Enhanced Senses (Bulborbs are nocturnal predators which hunt primarily at night. Even while asleep, they're capable of sensing light taps on their backside), Camouflage (Their spotty-backs allow them to appear as cave mushrooms when they are hunting or hibernating in dark caverns), Consumption (The Bulborb species can eat several Pikmin and eat inedible items), Regeneration and Resurrection (Low whilst alive; Can heal overtime from swarm attacks. Low-Mid upon dying; One a Spotty Bulbear falls in combat, their health begins to restore back to full capacity).

Resistance to Extreme Heats and Extreme Colds (Has adapted in all of the underground dungeons and earth's biomes like the Distant Tundra and Tropical Wilds), Time Stop and Magnetism Manipulation (All wildlife on PNF-404 are immune to the magnetic field which stops time in the underground dungeons), Sound Manipulation, Mind Manipulation, and Empathic Manipulation (The Antenna Beetle's whistle-like call technique, similar to the captain's whistle, has no effect on the Bulborb species. Olimar's whistle only temporarily stuns a bulborb), and Explosion Manipulation (Bomb Rocks don't instantly kill the Spotty Bulbear, though they are unable to consume Bomb Rocks like the Emperor Bulblax)

Other

Standard Tactics: The Spotty Bulbear is active during the day and night, and will typically charge at its prey at great speeds.

Weaknesses: Hitting it's eyes will cause it to shake in pain.
