Max (Seconds)

From The Codex
Me?

I'm tired, man.

Tired of faking my fake-ass way through life without you, I guess.

~ Max speaking to Katie

Background

Max is a major character in the book Seconds, and is Katie Clay's ex boyfriend. He was hired as a chef for Seconds during its first yearn and is supposedly the co-owner of Lucky's in the main timeline.

When Seconds first opened, Max was hired as a trainee chef under Katie's guidance. After the two warmed up to each other, as Katie originally felt negative towards Max, they began dating. As time went on however, their relationship experienced issues due to their shifts being different times throughout the day. This only further grew as an issue when Katie trained new chefs for Seconds in its popularity growth. Finally, due to Katie's unwillingness to speak to Max about a new restaurant plan she had put into motion, the two broke up fours years after they started dating and parted ways.

Months later, after Katie and Arthur neared the end of renovations for Lucknow Street, Max returned to Seconds in hopes of reconnecting with Katie, who dodged Max anytime they met face to face. This would continue until Katie's sixth revision where she told Max about her restaurant plan, keeping the two together instead of splitting up. In this revision, Max was presented as far more strict and sensitive about Katie's choice of words, like when she said "her restaurant" instead of "our restaurant". This becomes a problem for Katie, as Max ends up "going out" after each day due to her general behavior. In the final revision, the universe corrupts and we see Max and Yana married together instead of Katie, who neither have any knowledge on at this point.

After returning to her original world, Katie nd Max meet once more in the parking lot of Seconds, admitting how much they missed each other. The two start dating again and Max supposedly becomes a co-owner of Lucky's, alongside Katie and Arthur.

Powers and Techniques

Human Achievements (Is a professional chef and business owner), Vehicular Mastery, Cartoon Physics, Law Manipulation (Subspace can shape reality to the user's liking. An example being Scott Pilgrim and the various video game-like aspects of the world, which are a result of Subspace and its perspective-based abilities), Perspective Manipulation & Observation (Unconscious Manifestation; Potent Subspace users can use the perspective-based powers of Subspace to overwrite reality to fit how they view it in the real world), Avatar Creation (Has an avatar in subspace she unconsciously creates), Dimensional Travel & Space-Time Manipulation (Characters can manifest doors directly to subspace, or even move between subspace and the real world through sheer force. Breaking the walls between subspace and the main universe), Mind Manipulation (Entering Subspace directly accesses one's mind and subconscious thoughts), Sheer Will (Those who can access the powers of Subspace in the real world naturally require a strong will and determination to control them), Plot Manipulation (Narrative Manipulation & Plot Armor, Traditional; Through the power of Subspace, characters can rewrite and manipulate the plotline of their story. It's also implied throughout the various stories that Max, along with other major characters such as Scott Pilgrim, are protected by a sort of plot armor to help them in dire situations), Subjective Reality & Dimensional Storage (Whatever the user can imagine will be created in subspace. For instance, Scott manifested his love for Ramona as the Power of Love, which he can pull from and store in Subspace), Portal Creation & Summoning (As the powers of the characters originate from Subspace, they can create portals or summon beings and objects from their subspace)

All previous powers and abilities to an unknown extent. Abstract Existence (Idea, Primordial Source), Regeneration (Low-Godly; Subspace avatars are avatars of pure cognition[1] of one's true self and by extension can be restored by the true form at will[2]), Immortality, Supernatural Resilience, and Unconditional Time Travel (Life and Death Immunity; Concepts such as death are irrelevant to subspace avatars/dwellers as even if one dies[3] they will just be sent into subspace[4], with spirits being able to freely pass through and from Subspace. Immortal Metaphysical Aspect; All damage done to a subspace avatar means nothing to their true self. Someone like Scott could lose his limbs in subspace and be cut in half and would still be perfectly fine[2][5]. Reliance; True Self/Person; As the creation(s) in subspace ultimately have no major consequences on the real world self, the subspace avatar can be endlessly created[2]. Even if subspace itself is destroyed[5], the true self can simply restore it as well. Subspace avatars are avatars of pure cognition[1] created by one's true self and by extension can be restored by the true form at will[6], regardless of the damage they succumb to[2]) Alternate Replacements (Due to Subspace being an entire space-time continuum directly tied to the user's mind[7] mind subspace is therefore directly linked to the user's entire life, allowing for numerous versions of the same being to exist simultaneously[5]. Furthermore, psychic energies can traverse through the timestream to the present era, further suggesting that mental figments of one's past self can travel through the timestream), Acausality (Irregular Causality; Subspace is a different space-time where all rules are different (including death[4]), thus it should by extension be a different system of causality), Enhanced Perspective Manipulation and Observation (Unconscious Manifestation and Conscious Manifestation; Perception is Law. People, items, and Mind Subspace itself are based on the nature of the person's mind, therefore, however, a person imagines Subspace is how it will appear. A good example is Scott's Dream Desert[8]: this location is repeatedly used as a metaphor for Scott's loneliness but also is his projected image of Subspace at that time which Ramona is able to pass through[8]), Law Manipulation (One’s subspace operates under their rules[9] and systems[6] which can extend even to the real[10] world[11] with characters like Gideon affecting Ramona’s Subspace), Reality Warping and Mind Manipulation (Mindshifting; While Mind Subspace allows for others' own projected images of themselves to take on other forms[5], the individual whom the Subspace resides in retains all power and control within said mind. Through this, the character can shape themselves and Subspace to their liking all through their thoughts, perspectives, and desires), Power Nullification (A user of Subspace can completely nullify any connection an opponent has in that Subspace, regardless of if they're more powerful or not. This is how Ramona was able to expel Gideon despite him being a master of Subspace and able to manipulate it inside anyone's mind[5]), Dimensional Travel and limited Possession (Subspace users can unconsciously and consciously enter their subspace avatars[7], even after dying[5]), Power Manifestation (Gideon Graves was able to create the Glow from subspace[5] and use it to directly counter mind subspace[5])
