Hatou Manabu is the narrator and protagonist of Qualia the Purple. A junior high school girl with a blunt, grumpy demeanor, she is the daughter of a family that runs a naginata dojo and has trained in the weapon since childhood. Her given name, written with the character for "to study," is typically a boy's name, which has caused her years of teasing and misidentification; friends call her "Gaku" using an alternate reading.

Background

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Hatou Manabu’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

Early Life and Meeting Yukari

Manabu is antisocial, curt, and slow to smile, and she keeps her distance from classmates, earning a reputation as a lone stranger others can rely on if needed. She has no particular interest in cute things and never considered herself cute.

Her life changes when she meets Marii Yukari, a petite, doll-like girl who claims that all other living things look like robots to her. Because Yukari cannot tell whether Manabu is a boy or a girl, she follows her around to find out, and the two collide in a school hallway, accidentally kissing. After the collision, Manabu learns Yukari's secret and, though skeptical at first, notices Yukari desperately hiding her strangeness and trying to appear normal. Unable to look away, Manabu begins supporting her, and the two grow close. Manabu becomes Yukari's closest friend, frequently hugging her and insisting on her cuteness even though Yukari cannot understand it.

Tenjou Nanami

Manabu also comes to know Tenjou Nanami, Yukari's childhood friend from whom she is now estranged. Tenjou teases and antagonizes Yukari, though Manabu suspects her hostility hides complicated feelings. Tenjou teaches Manabu about qualia, philosophical zombies, Schrödinger's cat, the Copenhagen and Many-Worlds interpretations, and Fermat's principle. Manabu learns that Yukari once saved Tenjou's life after a jungle gym collapsed on her, rebuilding her body with parts from the structure, an experience that traumatized Tenjou and drove her away from Yukari.

The Tokyo Dismemberment Murder

During summer break, Manabu stays overnight at Yukari's house and watches her identify the true culprit of the Tokyo Dismemberment Murder from crime scene photos and suspect records. Later, the culprit kidnaps Manabu as bait, dismembers her, and lures Yukari out. Yukari rescues her, defeating the culprit with the help of animated plastic model robots, and repairs Manabu's severed left arm using parts from a cell phone. Afterward, Manabu discovers that her left hand can function as a phone at night, though it drains her stamina severely. The culprit turns herself in, and the incident leaves no official record.

Alice Foyle and Jaunt

A transfer student, Alice Foyle, arrives at their school. Alice is an eleven-year-old genius who sees mathematical equations as drawings and has been sent by the organization Jaunt to recruit Yukari. Alice dismisses ordinary people as "commoners" and insists Yukari belongs among fellow geniuses. She argues that Manabu cannot protect Yukari from the world, and Manabu, unable to answer, begins to believe Yukari should go with Alice. A mysterious phone call, which Manabu suspects came from herself, warns her that "Yukari will die like this."

Yukari's Death and the Cell Phone

Manabu tells Yukari she would support her transferring, and Yukari and Alice leave at the end of the third term. Less than half a year later, Manabu learns Yukari has died in a classified experiment at Jaunt, with only a small portion of her remains recovered. At the funeral, Alice flees from Manabu, and Manabu resolves to chase her and uncover the truth. When she and Yukari's parents fly to America to inspect Jaunt, their plane explodes over the Pacific, but Manabu awakens in her own bed, realizing the explosion happened in a parallel world and that other versions of herself survived.

She learns her left hand phone allows her to contact alternate versions of herself across parallel worlds, sharing knowledge and experience, and she resolves to become like light, pursuing the shortest path to her goal across infinite possibilities.

Life Across Infinite Worlds

Across countless worlds, Manabu studies quantum mechanics, trains her body, joins Jaunt, confronts Alice, and learns the truth: Jaunt wanted to exploit Yukari's eyes, she refused, and she was experimented on and dissected, her brain preserved. Manabu also experiences worlds where she loves Alice, hates her, uses her, kills her, and is killed by her.

She eventually realizes that changing the past is possible and attempts to save Yukari by altering history. She tries joining Jaunt, becoming the organization's leader, and using Alice's Theory of Everything to gain a vantage point beyond human observation. When every attempt fails, she concludes that Yukari's fate belongs to Yukari alone, and that her own arrogance in trying to control it was the fundamental mistake.

Final Timeline

Manabu returns to the night before she told Yukari to transfer and instead tells Yukari honestly that she does not want her to leave, offering to face the risks together and asking Yukari to decide for herself. She also challenges Alice to try being her friend, and Alice reluctantly agrees, extending her stay in Japan. Manabu has Yukari seal the phone function in her left hand, breaking her connection to the infinite worlds, though she keeps the hand itself as a link to Yukari. Yukari does not transfer, and Manabu, Yukari, Alice, and Tenjou enter their third year together.

Relationships

Marii Yukari

Hatou and Yukari first met when Yukari was tailing her as she saw her as a pretty masculine robot and wanted to see if she was a girl or boy, their bump in caused them to accidentally kiss[3].

Hatou and Marii are friends where Hatou notes to truly be her friend one has to take her word for it that she believes all things look like robots, believing being a friend is all about believing things their friend believes unconditionally no matter how hard it is[3].

Hatou wants Marii to be aware of the fact that she's cute as she worries since Marii pays so much attention to others but is totally clueless about herself, trying to show with her actions and tell her with her words to have more confidence in herself[3].

The many times of Hatou spending with Yukari had Yukari start to rely on her more before they became close with Hatou noting Yukari was her first kiss[3].

Hatou calls Yukari a dear friend and notes she wants to learn more about her and once she does she wants to be better friends with her[2].

When Hatou learns the truth about Marii that she can reattach people's body parts through using different appliances, she still states it doesn't matter because she views Marii as a friend.

Hatou at one point suggest to Yukari to accept Alice's proposal of going to Jaunt at the idea of thinking Yukari deserves to be free to not hide herself, keeping in touch with her by phone. Though due to the time difference, they had to switch over to letters, the first letter had Yukari note she can't keep in touch regularly anymore.

Eventually she learns Yukari died while under Jaunt and fights tooth and nail to be apart of the investigation to find out what happened to Yukari.

Hatou eventually learns she is able to change the past, though she loses everything in her present through doing this yet still goes through with it in order to revive Yukari.

She tries her hardest to protect her in this new world but unfortunately she is abducted and killed. She keeps going into the past to try to find anyway to save Yukari but she would keep ending up abducted.

Tenjou Nanami

Hatou dislikes how Tenjou messes with Yukari but Yukari will defend Tenjou whenever she tries to step in[4].

Tenjou warns Hatou that she knows more about Yukari then Hatou does noting that if she plans to be Yukari's friend, she's better off not knowing the truth[4]. Yukari hopes one day that Hatou and Tenjou can be friends but Hatou is against it. Though she at least gives her a point for now giving out Yukari's secret to her[2].

When talking with Tenjou after getting her phone, Tenjou notes that she can't be friends with Hatou as her view of robots the same as humans means she views humans merely as plastic models, however, Hatou retorts that the love and care she has for plastic models likely means instead that Hatou views plastic models as humans[5]. In this retort she begins to leave before Tenjou tells her that she hasn't truly seen Yukari yet.

After having a similar incident with Yukari that Tenjou did, Hatou is able to at least empathize with Tenjou's feelings, though she still does not approve of how she cats to Yukari.

Due to this empathizing Hatou and Tenjou regularly would discuss philosophy and different forms of science[6].

Though in one world Yukari lives for abroad school and Hatou and Tenjou don't speak until they meet up again eleven years later where they reminisce about the times at school.

When leaving, Tenjou asks if they could keep in touch saying she doesn't have anyone else she can talk to with Hatou agreeing saying they're friends.

Alice Foyle

Alice at first says she has no intention at being friends with "nobodies" like Hatou and Tenjou[7].

She later tells Hatou to try and convince Yukari to join Jaunt as she is wasting her time being around nobodies, Hatou retorts that Yukari should live her own life but Alice notes that Yukari's abilities cannot be hidden forever and a different organization could potentially kidnap her and abuse her talent without Hatou being able to protect her.

Alice later meets with Hatou again, ranting about the injustice in Yukari needing to hide her powers when she could freely use them at Jaunt. Eventually this convinces Hatou to have Yukari go with Alice to Jaunt.

However, this results in Yukari's death and when Hatou sees Alice at the funeral, Alice runs away.

When Hatou finds Alice, things differ depending on the world, but the main Hatou chooses to forgive her as she had no true part in Yukari's death[8].

In the main world, Hatou has Alice as a friend and eventually falls in love with her before she changes the past to where Yukari never died.

In changed past she at first acts like a bully to Alice to stop her from trying to get Yukari to go to Jaunt, it succeeds as Alice returns to Jaunt in low spirits, however Yukari still dies. Hatou moves on to attempting to kill Alice in multiple probabilities.

Eventually Hatou reaches a point where she has Alice fall in love with her and become her second in command as they take over Jaunt[9]. This causes a probability where Alice removes the dye on her hair and kills Hatou with her permission and the other where Alice completes her research on the Theory of Everything where Hatou erases herself.

In the final timeline, Hatou simply tells Alice they should try to be friends if she believes a Nobody can't be friends with a Genius and they become friends.

Cell Phone

  • Description: A standard old flip phone cellphone. The phone is later used by Yukari to fix Hatou's left hand allowing her to interfere with quantum mechanics.
  • Usage: For calls and texting.
  • Function: Hatou and Yukari go out together to get matching flip phones[5]. Hatou can also use it to call alternate versions of herself and share memories amongst them.

Notable Techniques

Quantum Interference

Hatou's phone allows her to connect with other verisons of herself from infinte timelines, asecnding into becoming a self-observation allowing her to effectively freely alter probability and travel through time.

Other

Standard Tactics: Due to there being infinite possibilities Hatou can endlessly search for worlds for different powers, learn about oragnizations and use that knowledge from the future to change the past, and learn everything about someone to know how to counter them[11].

Weaknesses: Her hand could initially only be used at night, but she found she can use it where it was relatively dark, it cannot work as a phone if others are around, and it takes a lot of energy, causing Hatou to collapse from hunger due to her left hand being a cell phone using the energy in her body instead of electricity[8]. Something determined in fate cannot be changed no matter how many infinite attempts there are[11]. Significant damage to her phone messes with her quantum interfernece abilities[18].

Explanations

Jaunt

Jaunt is an organization that picks up people with special eyes/powers like Marii Yukari and Alice Foyle[7].

According to Alice, it's an organization made to protect and nurture special children, having a school made for them and left private and has the government supporting it[7].

The name comes from a novel by Alfred Bester that refers to a fictional power to move a human being instantly by force of will regardless of walls or distance ( teleportation), but it can also be a metaphor for a mode of rebirth that changes the world[7].

Jaunting is a dynamic symbol of a fierce drive for power, a way for people to reach new heights, an innovation, adaptation, and the signpost to an open future away from stagnation[7].

Through these principles they seek to protect and support rare talents so they are not buried by the world and that they can find a better future[7].

Jaunt was also an acronym made from the initials of the founders of the organization and is a nickname rather then the organization's official name[7].

Jaunt is later found to be a terrorist organization stealing young kids and using them for research purposes, being one of the first entities to get Yukari killed.

Trivia

  • There are many cases of Hatou effectively being a being that is in the chicken vs. the egg paradox. Yukari implies in her letter that Hatou becoming godlike caused a new world where Yukari had her abilities in the first place as Hatou was favoring her.
  • Hatou's story of trying to stop Yukari from dying no matter the cost is likely what inspired characters like Homura Akemi from Puella Magi Madoka Magica.
