Background

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Marii Yukari’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

Early Life

Yukari was born with distinctive purple eyes, and her parents named her after their color, using the character for "purple." As a child she could not smile or express emotions at all, because every other human looked like a robot to her and robots do not display facial expressions. She also could not understand the concept of a facial expression. Her first friend, Tenjou Nanami, taught her how to laugh by pinching her, stealing her lunch, tickling her, feeding her sweets, and showing her her own expressions in a mirror. Nanami and Yukari were best friends until an accident in which Nanami fell from a jungle gym that collapsed on top of her. Yukari rebuilt Nanami's body using parts from the jungle gym, but Nanami was awake for the process and was traumatized. Nanami then grew distant and began treating Yukari cruelly.

At some point Yukari was asked by a friend to explain what she saw, and after she answered, that friend drifted away from her. In art class she drew a robot portrait of another friend, who saw the drawing and began to hate and bully her. Yukari learned to hide her perception from others and to work hard at appearing normal.

Meeting Hatou Manabu

In junior high, Yukari could not tell whether her classmate Hatou Manabu was a boy or a girl, since robots have no gender and Manabu's name, voice, and figure were ambiguous. Wanting to avoid saying something rude in the future, Yukari followed her around to find out. When Manabu turned a corner unexpectedly, the two collided and accidentally kissed. Yukari cried and explained herself, and Manabu learned her secret. Manabu began backing her up whenever she got into trouble, and the two grew close. Yukari became dependent on Manabu and frequently let herself be hugged, though she never understood why Manabu called her cute.

Tenjou Nanami and School Life

Yukari still considered Nanami a friend and hoped they would reconcile, even as Nanami teased and antagonized her. At school Yukari was well liked and treated as a class mascot because of her cuteness and harmless oddity. She discovered the class president's talent for weather prediction by asking her about the weather, and she advised her track friend Shou to take up running because of the "rollers and Vernier Thrusters" she saw on his feet. When Manabu asked what kind of boy she liked, Yukari answered "Kasoku-kun," citing his "amazing drill."

The Tokyo Dismemberment Murder

Yukari became preoccupied with news of the Tokyo Dismemberment Murder and, after seeing the apprehended suspect, called the police to say the suspect did not look like the murderer. Two men connected to the police visited her home and showed her crime scene photos and suspect records. Yukari identified a girl in a sailor uniform as the true culprit. Her identification was later vindicated.

The Kidnapping

The culprit later kidnapped Manabu as bait to lure Yukari out. Yukari came alone to the warehouse and was questioned by the culprit, who revealed that she saw humans as bags of flesh and wanted Yukari to confirm that humans and robots were no different. Yukari answered that there was no difference, and the culprit concluded that life and souls did not exist. Yukari countered that just because humans and robots were alike did not mean humans were not alive or had no souls. Animated plastic model robots then swarmed the culprit. Yukari repaired Manabu's severed left arm using parts from a cell phone, and the culprit later turned herself in. From then on, Manabu's left hand could function as a phone at night.

Alice Foyle and the Transfer

After summer break, Alice Foyle transferred into their class and announced she had especially looked forward to meeting Yukari. Alice had been sent by Jaunt to recruit Yukari. Yukari was fond of physical affection, and Alice stayed close to her, linking arms and spending as much time with her as possible. Alice told Yukari that Jaunt protected special children, that there were other children like them hidden from the world, and that at Jaunt Yukari would not have to hide her eyes and might even learn the mystery behind them.

The Decision to Transfer

Yukari was torn about staying, because she feared her eyes would bring trouble to Tenjou and Manabu. She believed she needed the strength to survive on her own, and she took Manabu's approval as the deciding factor. She waited until the third school term ended before transferring, and she went alone to the Jaunt school without her family.

Life at Jaunt and Death

The adults at Jaunt had aimed for Yukari's eyes from the start and had tricked Alice into luring her over. They asked her to use her eyes to observe the whole Earth and to remodel the world, and she refused, saying the world was fine as it was. She rejected their arguments that the world was dying and needed mechanical management. The adults isolated her, threatened to kill her family, and she retreated into herself, becoming like a robot and eventually refusing meals. Jaunt then decided to dissect her brain to study qualia. In the original timeline, Yukari died in this experiment, and only a small portion of her remains was recovered.

Rescue and Survival

In the final timeline, an FBI raid prompted by a leaked tip arrested the Jaunt adults, and Yukari was rescued. She was hospitalized in serious condition from malnutrition and had not spoken to anyone since her rescue. Her family, Manabu, Tenjou, Alice, and the other children were on their way to her, and Alice and the others had refused to leave her side. When she awoke, she saw a plastic model robot near her pillow and called out to "Gaku-chan," revealing that she could perceive Manabu even in her transformed, unobservable state. She told Manabu that no one but Yukari herself had the right to change her fate, and she kissed the robot in her hands, which helped Manabu remember her true self and return to normal.

Personality

Relationships

Hatou Manabu

Hatou and Yukari first met when Yukari was tailing her as she saw her as a pretty masculine robot and wanted to see if she was a girl or boy, their bump in caused them to accidentally kiss[2].

Hatou and Marii are friends where Hatou notes to truly be her friend one has to take her word for it that she believes all things look like robots, believing being a friend is all about believing things their friend believes unconditionally no matter how hard it is[2].

Hatou wants Marii to be aware of the fact that she's cute as she worries since Marii pays so much attention to others but is totally clueless about herself, trying to show with her actions and tell her with her words to have more confidence in herself[2].

The many times of Hatou spending with Yukari had Yukari start to rely on her more before they became close with Hatou noting Yukari was her first kiss[2].

Hatou calls Yukari a dear friend and notes she wants to learn more about her and once she does she wants to be better friends with her[4].

When Hatou learns the truth about Marii that she can reattach people's body parts through using different appliances, she still states it doesn't matter because she views Marii as a friend.

Hatou at one point suggest to Yukari to accept Alice's proposal of going to Jaunt at the idea of thinking Yukari deserves to be free to not hide herself, keeping in touch with her by phone. Though due to the time difference, they had to switch over to letters, the first letter had Yukari note she can't keep in touch regularly anymore.

Eventually she learns Yukari died while under Jaunt and fights tooth and nail to be apart of the investigation to find out what happened to Yukari.

Hatou eventually learns she is able to change the past, though she loses everything in her present through doing this yet still goes through with it in order to revive Yukari.

She tries her hardest to protect her in this new world but unfortunately she is abducted and killed. She keeps going into the past to try to find anyway to save Yukari but she would keep ending up abducted.

Tenjou Nanami

Tenjou used to be friends with Marii until one day where Tenjou fell from the jungle gym and had a horrible accident, with Marii repairing her by fixing her body parts with parts of the jungle gym. This in turn freaked out Tenjou and made her resent and hate Marii.

Tenjou can be seen as Yukari's bully, however it's noted that her acts fall more into a playground fight than actual bullying; others don't stop Tenjou from messing with Yukari ahs Yukari will defend Tenjou[3].

Tenjou notes to Yukari if she's ever had the idea that instead of seeing humans as robots, her eyes are actually showing her the truth, being that they all mistakenly think they're humans but they're in reality robots, perhaps even ones sent to infiltrate human society or the leftovers from a war[3]. Yukari notes back to this that she never once thought what she saw wasn't real.

Yukari notes she allows Tenjou's bullying as she hurt her in a way that she has every right to hate her for. Yukari also notes she still sees her as a friend and hopes that her and Hatou can be friends one day too but Hatou is against it.

In the final timeline, Nanami is mostly friends with Yukari again as much as she won't admit it.

Alice Foyle

Alice introduces herself saying that she has been very eager to meet Marii Yukari[5].

She acknowledges Marii and likes her due to Marii having a special ability with her eye, classifying her as a genius[6].

She asks Marii to join her organization that finds people like her and Marii and takes care of them[6].

Depending on the timeline, Yukari usually goes and dies with Alice being too afraid to confront Hatou about it.

In the final timeline Hatou decides to stay with Yukari and Hatou instead of going back to Jaunt.

  • Function: Yukari wears it while painting models as when she paints for a long time she eventually passes out from the paint fumes.

Notable Techniques

Robot Worldview

Yukari views all humans as robots and due to this she is able to easily fix them as if they were machinery, repairing removed limbs, or removing limbs seamlessly without causing any harm to the person.

Other

Standard Tactics: Marii doesn't like fighting and the only time she has is directly against a serial killer.

Weaknesses: Yukari is scared of water[2]. Due to viewing everyone as a robot, Yukari cannot understand facial expressions so she has never seen a human laugh or cry[5]. Despite Marii's abilities she doesn't like fighting, which is likely what results in her getting killed all the time. She's observing her own death and only changes it once becoming aware of it.

Explanations

Jaunt

Jaunt is an organization that picks up people with special eyes/powers like Marii Yukari and Alice Foyle[6].

According to Alice, it's an organization made to protect and nurture special children, having a school made for them and left private and has the government supporting it[6].

The name comes from a novel by Alfred Bester that refers to a fictional power to move a human being instantly by force of will regardless of walls or distance ( teleportation), but it can also be a metaphor for a mode of rebirth that changes the world[6].

Jaunting is a dynamic symbol of a fierce drive for power, a way for people to reach new heights, an innovation, adaptation, and the signpost to an open future away from stagnation[6].

Through these principles they seek to protect and support rare talents so they are not buried by the world and that they can find a better future[6].

Jaunt was also an acronym made from the initials of the founders of the organization and is a nickname rather then the organization's official name[6].

Jaunt is later found to be a terrorist organization stealing young kids and using them for research purposes, being one of the first entities to get Yukari killed.
