Background

Tomie Kawakami is the main protagonist/antagonist and titular character in the manga series of the same name. She is a supernatural entity who manipulates those around her, particularly men, driving them to obsession, madness, and violence. Despite being killed repeatedly, Tomie regenerates and creates clones of herself, making her an immortal and ever-present force of destruction.

Visually, Tomie is known for her striking appearance—long black hair (though sometimes depicted shorter or blonde) and a distinctive beauty mark under her left eye. Her beauty is described as nearly impossible to resist, a core aspect of her character that leads to her manipulating others for her selfish desires.

Tomie is cold, calculating, and deeply manipulative, using her allure to control people and drive them to extreme actions. Even after being killed, she returns more dangerous than before, making her a persistent and terrifying presence throughout the series. Her character explores themes of obsession, vanity, and the darker sides of human nature, leaving chaos and tragedy in her wake.

Personality

  • Manipulative: Tomie has a very manipulative personality, she'll tell lies to boys she likes to get them to fall for her, and she'll tell lies to girls to get them to think a boy they like hates them.
  • Egotistical: Tomie is extremely egotistical, believing herself to be the most beautiful thing in the world. She believes nothing can capture her beauty, not cameras, pictures, or any artwork.
  • Princess-like Attitude: Tomie believes all men should treat her as a princess. She does not care about anyone other than herself. She will act like a complete brat when she doesn't get her way.
  • Attention: Tomie wants attention, especially from those that blatantly ignore her. She will do everything to get their attention, even down to slowing her regeneration just to tease them.

Powers and Techniques

Equipment

  • Men she bewitches: These men will do anything for her, even murder.

Notable Techniques

  • Fragrance: Tomie possesses a fragrance that controls and soothes all men, making them fall for her. This fragrance is likely a component of men's immense obsession with her. They will start irrationally loving her to the point that they will try to cut her to pieces and kill her.

Other

Standard Tactics: Tomie normally tries to find a man she's interested in and teases them over some time until their obsession becomes too much. She rarely fights back when they kill her, despite being aware that the men who fall for her will eventually kill her.

Weaknesses: Any man that falls for her will eventually cut her to pieces and kill her due to their huge obsession with her. Tomie's regeneration takes a long time, though it can be sped up through radiation[48]. It seems being burned to death makes Tomie unable to regenerate back[49]. Pictures reveal her true face[50], having her develop a fear of having her picture taken[51]. Being repeatedly called a monster and liar caused her second head to come out of her[52], this was explained by Mr. Takagi that when she is faced with enough psychological trauma, she begins to split of her own accord[53]. Acid prevents any further development from Tomie's regeneration[54]. All Tomie's want to kill each other, viewing one Tomie as enough and all others as "pretenders"[55]. Cremating her at the highest temperature prevents her from regenerating[56]. Tying her up and sealing her in cement will prevent her from multiplying[57].

Trivia

  • The name Tomie means "wealth, abundance" (富) (tomi) and "bay, inlet" (江) (e).
  • Tomie's surname Kawakami means "upstream, upper reaches of a river" (川上).
    • The kami sound is also associated with the 神 symbol, which is used in association with and means 'god'. This could be a reference to her flawless appearance and ability to seemingly live forever and recover from any damage done to her, however, since her name's symbols are not so, this is simply an assumption.
  • Tomie shares many similarities to a succubus:
    • She draws men of all ages towards her.
    • She uses men for her amusement.
    • She retains her youthful appearance.
  • Throughout the entire run of her stories, Tomie has never killed a single person by her own hands, always having the men she seduced do it for her.
  • Tomie shares many similarities to the concept of death:
    • Wherever Tomie goes, people die; whether by their own hands or by others.
    • No matter how many times Tomie gets killed by the people she encounters, she comes back with almost no method to completely take her out for good.
    • How Tomie's victims die ranges from being murdered, committing suicide, being driven mad, being left for dead in the middle of nowhere, and aging.
  • For unknown reasons when photographed her more monstrous nature is shown usually by extra eyes or another face/head emerging from her head. After Tsukiko discovered this Tomie gained an aversion to cameras and will avoid them whenever she can.
  • Each Tomie believes herself to be the most beautiful being, and they see even other Tomies as inferior copies of her and seek to kill any they come across. They do this by invoking men to hunt down the other Tomie and kill them with fire.
