Jump to navigationJump to search

Muffet is a miniboss the protagonist encounters in Hotland. She runs a bake sale, being very angry at passers-by who do not purchase anything from it, even though buying something costs 9999 gold. She was a bought-in character during the Kickstarter for the game.

Muffet
You think your taste is too refined for our pastries, don't you, deary? Ahuhuhu... I disagree with that notion. I think your taste...Is exactly what this next batch needs!

Background

Muffet appears to be the leader of the spiders in the Underground. She also runs her own bake sale in Hotland, with the purpose of raising funds to rescue the spiders trapped in the Ruins, as they cannot make it past Snowdin's cold weather. After running into her web, Muffet fights the protagonist.

After the battle has gone on long enough, Muffet receives a telegram from the spiders in the Ruins. The contents of the telegram vary depending on the protagonist's actions. After receiving the telegram, Muffet concludes that the protagonist does not hate spiders and decides to let them go, apologizing and jokingly offering to wrap them up in her web and play with her pet again for free next time they come around. If the protagonist had bought an item from the bake sale in the Ruins and then used it right in front of Muffet, she accuses the protagonist of stealing before receiving the telegram immediately afterward. If the protagonist has purchased at least one of the items from her bake sale in Hotland, she thanks the protagonist instead of battling with them.

If the protagonist decides to kill her instead, a spider crawls and places a flower in the place where Muffet died.

During the battle, Muffet speaks about how she was warned by someone about the protagonist's arrival, and she was offered much money for the protagonist's SOUL. She also explains that the money would help to finally reunite the spider clans. When the protagonist fights Mettaton later on, he reveals that he was the one who made the anonymous offer.

Name Meaning

Muffet's name appears to reference the children's nursery rhyme "Little Miss Muffet," in which a young girl eating cottage cheese is frightened away by a spider.

Appearance

General Description: Muffet is an anthropomorphic spider monster with periwinkle or lavender skin, five eyes, six arms, and two legs.

Facial Features: She has five eyes. Twin pigtails are worn in her hair.

Clothing/Outfit: Red rompers with buttons in the front. A red ribbon across her chest.

Items: Two teacups held with her top pair of hands. Two teapots held with her middle pair.

Pet Accomplice: A giant muffin or cupcake with a face on the frosting part and spider legs sticking out of the sides.

Personality

  • Buisinesswoman: Muffet is often portrayed as greedy, stingy, intimidating, and hypocritical, though she speaks in a courteous and sweet manner.
  • Malicious: Muffet has a malicious aspect to her personality when crossed, which occasionally triggers her to fight.
  • Cites Morbid Things: During her battle, Muffet comments on morbid or inappropriate things, such as the protagonist's possible fate of being used to make food.

Relationships

Her Spiders

Muffet seems to have a deep care for her spiders, willing to attack and kill anyone who has done harm or has been "stingy" to them.

Her Pet

Muffet seems to love her pet, bringing it out to eat whoever dares crosses spiders.

The Human

Muffet faces The Human under the belief that they hate spiders and attempts to kill them.

Depending on the route, Muffet learns that the Human has actually donated to spiders and apologizes for the misunderstanding, letting the human go. Though in certain neutral and genocide routes she is killed either as a betrayal kill or before she can even figure this out.

During the genocide route in specific, Muffet notes how the human is scaring away all of her customers. In this version she decides to let go of the protagonist as even if they are a hyper-violent murderer, they have not hurt any spiders.

Powers and Techniques

Equipment

Tea Cups, Her Pet, Various Spiders

Notable Techniques

  • Purple Mode: Muffet turns her opponent's soul purple, surrounding them in webs. While in this state, opponent's are forced to only move horizontally along the string of web they currently occupy, or vertically up or down to an adjacent string. This technique is used to limit opponent's movement to set paths along with preventing escape.
  • Spiders: Numerous spiders will crawl along the webs, attempting to attack Muffet's foe.
  • Pastries: Muffet's pastries not only act as "delicious" treats, but also deadly projectiles. Muffet will either send bouncing donuts towards her opponent, or toss croissants which function as deadly boomerangs. The pain is free of charge.
  • The Pet: Muffet will call forth a giant, monstrous muffin spider, which will begin to pull down the webbing and force foes towards its maw.

Other

Standard Tactics: Muffet will trap her opponents in webs, making it hard for them to move and attack with her spiders, sometimes calling her pet to try and eat the opponent.

Weaknesses: Will no longer fight you if she thinks you're not a threat to spiders or have done nothing to harm them. All monsters are weak to an attack with killing intent behind it and if a monster doesn't want to fight, they are weakened greatly[20].

Explanations

Monster Check Stats

Monster's check stats are quite dubious for a couple of reasons:

On top of these, genocide route has the check stats differ too with confusing changes, while the human's killing intent is a reason behind this, some characters have their defense stats raise such as Papyrus'. There's also inconsistencies even in these routes, for example The Human at a level 3 killing intent one-shots Toriel[21] yet The Human at level 13 can still only chip damage Asgore[22].

It should also be noted, the argument that Toriel sent Asgore flying with her fire, has an issue it was an off guard hit[23] which it has been shown off-guard/betrayal kills can one-shot monsters as they lowered their guard[24].

Magic vs. Physicality

Monsters are mostly made of magic while human beings are mostly made of water[2] making humans with their physical forms far stronger then them[2]. However humans have lost the ability to use magic by proxy[2].

Monsters bodies being made of magic has their body physically attuned to their SOUL[4]. Due to this, monsters that don't want to fight have their defenses weaken[4] and one with more killing intent and crueller intentions will inflict more damage on them[4]. This is due to a monsters SOUL being made of love, hope, and compassion[25].

Monsters bodies being made of magic also makes it where they do not possess enough physical matter to take concentrations of determination[26].

In the Undertale 10th Anniversary Livestream Gerson reveals that humanity once had magic too but creating the barrier that separated humans and monsters caused them to use up all their magic[27].

Trivia

  • Despite spiders typically having eight, four, six, or no eyes, Muffet has five.
  • The croissant sold at Muffet's Spider Bake Sale is a reference to a recurring item from The Legend of Zelda series. When the protagonist interacts with it, the text "It looks like some sort of powerful bracelet" appears, as the croissant's sprite closely resembles the Power Bracelet.
  • Attempting to call Papyrus or Undyne before fighting Muffet in the Spider Entrance room triggers the message: "(The signal is clogged with cobwebs...)."
  • There is a glitch in the credits where Muffet's pigtails appear below the ribbons on her hair instead of being placed on top of them.
  • Muffet's pet sprite is labeled "spr_hideouscupcake" in the game files.
  • Some enemies, when attacked, play the same laugh that Muffet uses leading up to her fight, but at a faster speed.
  • Despite being classified as a miniboss, Muffet has a unique SOUL Mode and negative defense on the Genocide Route. However, her appearance among regular enemies and minibosses in the True Pacifist Ending Credits, along with her lack of major plot significance, supports her classification as a miniboss.
  • Muffet has an unused white description intended for the True Pacifist Ending Credits. It was meant to say "Trying To Make Spider Ends Meet - Muffet".
