Toriel is the second major character the human encounters in Undertale. She saves the human from Flowey and guides them through the Ruins. Toriel is a kind monster who acts as a protective mother for the human. She employs tough love on the human as well as Asgore. She cares for children and was excited to become a mother. She enjoys cooking and bakes butterscotch-cinnamon pie as well as her favorite, snail pie. Toriel has a playful side and loves puns and bad jokes and she even keeps a journal of puns. Toriel is said to be intelligent and dreams of becoming a teacher. She has already prepared a curriculum for the human by the time they reach her home in the Ruins. In the True Pacifist Ending Credits, she stands outside a school and, in the Family Ending of a Neutral Route, she starts her own.

Toriel's name is a play on the word "Tutorial" as she even serves as giving a tutorial to the world and its mechanics.
Appearance
General Description:
Toriel is a Boss Monster whose head resembles a white-furred Nubian Goat, structured with floppy ears and tiny horns. She has a pair of visible fangs and long eyelashes, and her irises have a dark red tint. She has an anthropomorphic body with paws at the end of her limbs.
Clothing/Outfit:
A long purple robe with white sleeves and the Delta Rune on the chest.

Reading glasses, seen when reading a book on snail facts.
Personality
Mother Figure: Toriel is a kind monster who acts as a protective mother figure for the human. She expresses her love through words and actions. She cares for children and was excited to become a mother.
Tough Love: Toriel employs tough love on the human and Asgore. Such as forcing them to fight her to prove they can survive in the Underground and shooting Asgore with a fireball to stop him from fightign the human.
Hobbies: Toriel's hobbies include baking, reading, writing puns, bug-hunting, and tending to flowers. She enjoys baking Butterscotch Pie and Snail Pie. She has read many books in her home and has a journal full of puns. She enjoyed puns even before meeting Sans.
Intelligent and Intimidating: Toriel is said to be intelligent and can come off as intimidating when she is serious. She is meticulous in her goals and was often referred by her title when she was queen.
Teacher: Toriel aspires to be a teacher. She offers instructions on puzzles and prepares a curriculum for the human. In the True Pacifist Ending Credits, she stands outside a school, and in the Family Ending of the Neutral Route, she starts her own.
Toriel extends her nurturing nature to the human just as she has to other humans who have fallen into the Ruins. She attempts to keep the human there, believing it is for their own safety—knowing that Asgore has killed the other humans who left her care. If the human spares her, she reluctantly allows them to leave, offering a parting hug before they go.
If the human kills her during a Neutral Route, she uses her final moments to warn them about the dangers ahead, calling them "my child" before turning to dust. If she is killed after she stops attacking, she hysterically laughs and claims the human is no different from the monsters outside the Ruins before dying. In the Genocide Route, she realizes that by keeping the human in the Ruins, she was not protecting them—but rather protecting the rest of the monsters from them.
If the human calls Toriel "mom," she is surprised but states that if it makes them happy, she wholeheartedly approves. Flirting with her on the phone in the Ruins leads her to assume the human is joking; if done again, she becomes uncertain how to respond. If the human flirts with her after calling her "mother," she becomes uncomfortable and calls them an "interesting" child, a remark she also mentions in the epilogue.
If the game is reset, Toriel remarks that speaking to the human feels like "meeting an old friend for the first time," and notes that she experiences this feeling with most fallen humans.
Asgore is Toriel's ex-husband. The two were once exceptionally close, winning first place in the '98 Nose Nuzzle competition and being openly affectionate with one another. During their marriage, Toriel's nicknames for Asgore included "Fluffybuns" and "Gorey."
Toriel left Asgore and New Home after he declared war on humanity. When they are reunited in the True Pacifist Route, she criticizes his plan for freeing the monsters but still believes he deserves mercy, even though she considers him "terrible." When Asgore asks if they can reconcile or at least be friends, Toriel declines. While she appears civil when discussing the future of the Underground after the fight against Asriel, once they are on the surface and everyone else has left, Asgore wonders if he should leave—and Toriel glares at him, prompting him to go. However, in the ending credits, she does not object to his presence while he trims the bushes, hinting at a growing tolerance or gradual forgiveness.
Toriel was Asriel's mother. Little is known about their relationship, but she always wanted a child and raised him alongside Asgore. She wished the best for Asriel and allowed him to befriend the first human. Even when the first human poisoned Asgore, Toriel was furious but did not hold a lasting grudge against them. After leaving New Home, she never spoke of Asriel again.
Toriel took care of Chara as her own child. She spent time with them, teaching them how to cook pies and knit. Chara bonded closely with Toriel, adopting her habit of saying "Greetings." After their death, Toriel refused to leave their body in the basement, instead burying them properly in a field of golden flowers.
Sans and Toriel do not meet in person until the end of the True Pacifist Route, as well as in the Family and Exiled Queen endings, where they become good friends. Their friendship began through jokes exchanged through the door between the Ruins and Snowdin[2]. At some point, Toriel entrusted Sans with protecting any human who left the Ruins[3]. They continue to bond in the epilogue, texting each other as the human backtracks through the Underground.

Knowledge: At least Master level (Shown at the end of the True Pacifist route to become a professional teacher, has lived for thousands of years and pre-dates written history)
Fire Magic: Toriel's primary means of attack. She will either make a sweeping motion with her hands and cause a large trail of fireballs to appear and chase her opponent, or cause a volley of fireballs to rain from the sky and burn up the ground around her foe.
