Nyeck nyeck nyeeeck! I am Tolstar, the great and famed king of Stardust Fields! I've heard tales of you, but you aren't very impressive in person! Nyeeeck nyeck nyeck!
~ Tolstar to Bowser

Background

Tolstar, the king of Stardust Fields, is a large Spike who appears in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and its 3DS remake. His name likely derives from "toll star", as he forces people (such as Mario and Luigi) to pay a toll to get across the border in Stardust Fields, or a play on the Russian word толстый (tólstyj), meaning "fat." He is the first true major boss in the game.

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Tolstar’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

When Bowser is stuck in his cannon in Stardust Fields during the events of Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, Tolstar charges the brothers all their Coins to get Bowser out the cannon and keep the incident a secret. Mario offers the coins, but they are all Mushroom Kingdom coins, and they are worth much less in the Beanbean Kingdom. The total amount of Mushroom Kingdom coins will always total 10 Beanbean coins, regardless of how many the player has. Tolstar then demands an additional 100 Beanbean coins, and the brothers must search Stardust Fields for them, either by defeating enemies or from ? Blocks. Upon collecting them, however, Tolstar still refuses to set Bowser free and attacks Mario and Luigi and their battle begins.

After defeating him, the Bros. are about to free Bowser, but Sergeant Starshade, annoyed with the Koopa King's complaints, shoots him out of the cannon (causing him to crash through the unconscious Tolstar) into parts unknown. The brothers advance to Hoohoo Village, where they are accused of kidnapping Prince Peasley by the Beanbean troops. However, a beat-up Tolstar flies over (using the miniature wings on his shoulders) to inform the guards that the two are Mario and Luigi, that they are tough, and that they did not kidnap the Prince. He is never seen again after that.

Tolstar reappears in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions with the exact same role as the original game, but with different statistics. He also drops the Cosmic Pants when defeated.

Powers and Techniques

Superhuman Physical Characteristics, Self-Sustenance (Respiratory Self-Sustenance; Like every other character can breathe in space) Explosion Manipulation (Throws spiked bombs for his attacks), Statistics Reduction (Has a 30% chance of inflicting stat down and speed down), Status Effect Inducement (Has a 30% chance of inflicting dizzy), Fire Manipulation (Has a 30% chance of inflicting burn), Rage Power (Mid battle he gains, the fury status), Paint (Like everyone else can use paint which gives the following: Conceptual Manipulation (Like every other character Tolstar can remove paint from anyone with any attack. The next set of the abilities are what paint makes up, and thus Tolstar can remove them. See notes for extra information on paint), Life Manipulation & Death Manipulation (Paint makes up all of life), Mind Erasure & Memory Erasure (Paint makes up the mind and memory), Metaphysics Manipulation (Soul Manipulation; Paint makes up the souls), Empathic Manipulation (Paint can inflict anger, sadness, self-consciousness, and remove motivation. It can also remove said emotions), Poison Manipulation (Paint can inflict poison), Blood Manipulation (Paint makes up blood), Power Nullification (Paint can nullify abilities and forces you to use an ability that's the same color as the paint)).
Resistance to Cosmic Radiations, Biological Manipulation, & Gravity Manipulation (Can survive in the vacuum of space like every other character), Conceptual Manipulation (Can survive attacks from Mario which every one of his attacks are conceptual attacks that take away paint)

Equipment

Spiked Bombs

Other

Standard Tactics: Tolstar will throw spiked bombs, when he laughs he will throw a jumping spiked bomb and if he doesn’t laugh he will throw a grounded spiked bomb.

Weaknesses: Nothing notable.

Note: In Paper Mario Color Splash, the main point of the game is paint. Paint is a concept. As shown in the game, paint encompasses everything. And I mean everything. Paint is shown to be all of land, liquid, life (Once bringing Toad back via paint, Huey states that paint gives life. Additionally, paint can return the blood, organs, and skin to an old fossil that's been dead years ago), mind (Paint can speak to your mind by coloring your thoughts. Paint was able to take over Bowser's body and freely act on their own. Big Paint Stars are also shown to be alive), memory (Toad couldn't remember anything with the loss of paint on his head. Returning paint gave his memories back), emotions, space (even simple holes require paint to function as holes) and souls. Removing any paint would stop making anything work. It's everything.
