Background

Hildegard von Krone, often called Hilde, is a major protagonist of the Soulcalibur series. She serves as the princess of the Kingdom of Wolfkrone, who serves as a key member of the resistance against the Azure Knight, Nightmare, and his malfested minions. After the unholy event known as the Evil Seed wreaked havoc through Wolfkrone and corrupted her own father, Hilde has remained resolute in her quest to destroy Soul Edge and bring peace back to her people.

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Hildegard’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

"Father, we leave today."

Hilde was having an audience with the king in a closed stone chamber at the very top of the castle tower. Since the destruction known as the Evil Seed had swept across the kingdom, her father had been lost in a fog of madness and confined to this tiny, lonely cell. She had never been able to put that woeful event behind her, but weakness was not an option. The survival of the Kingdom of Wolfkrone depended on her now.

Hilde purified herself in preparation to lead her army to battle, and then donned her armor and helm. She thought back to an incident several days earlier: upon coming to the assistance of a troop of mercenaries traveling through Wolfkrone, she had learned that a man called Siegfried was about to enter Ostrheinsburg alone. Hilde found Siegfried and contrived to meet him, thinking they could work together towards a common goal. But the knight would have nothing to do with her; he would take on the cursed city alone.

Hilde took it as a sign; perhaps the dawn her kingdom had prayed for all these years was finally coming to end their long nightmare. At daybreak, she gave the command for all the forces of Wolfkrone to march. She herself rode at the head of the army, her thoughts heavy. Would she be able to lead her kingdom to a new dawn?

Hilde's army proudly triumphed in the battle against the cursed sword; destroying the wretched Soul Edge before the justice of the holy sword, Soul caliber, wielded by her friend, Siegfried. However, even after Nightmare's destruction, Hilde still found her kingdom to be in turmoil, tragically drained of the Wolfkrone legacy, and poisoned by the terrors of the past Azure Knight.

Despite this, Hilde still held on to the leadership born from her blood, and vowed to restore her homeland at all costs. Ordering her people to depart from the ruins, the determined princess traveled from nation to nation, negotiating land for the ones who followed her as she continued searching for locations to resettle.

Seventeen years passed. As she and her republic became settled, Hilde received a distasteful message from Siegfried, being informed that a number of malfested planned to bring war upon her throne. Refusing to fall, Hilde immediately assembled her troops alongside Siegfried, anxious to put an end to the demonic evil and finally bring peace upon Wolfkrone.

Deep within her soul, Hilde knew that she may not live to witness her subjects' safe return home. However, her two children might.

Wolfkrone. Wedged between the Kingdom of France and the Holy Roman Empire, this small European kingdom on the west bank of the Rhine traces its roots to its guardian beast: the wolf. Legend states that long ago a mythic hero known as "the Wolf" wielded a holy spear and sword in defense of the land's people and established for them a nation, which now boasts a robust warrior tradition with soldiers widely renowned for their skill.

Over their long and proud history, the people of Wolfkrone were at one point absorbed by another nation and split into multiple disparate houses, but nevertheless their bloodline endured. By the end of the 14th century, Lord Philibert IV of Krone rose up with brilliant political savvy and formidable military might to reestablish an independent monarchy over which he ruled as king.

Generations passed, and the year is now 1582. King George of Wolfkrone is hailed as the greatest monarch since Philibert. His elite retinue, known as the Silver Wolves, have made a name for themselves fighting on countless battlefields. With a sword in one hand and a spear flying their banner in the other, the soldiers of Wolfkrone have spent centuries honing a unique fighting technique that honors their legendary founder, the Wolf. And now, a noble young wolf grips sword and shield with pride and honor, eyes burning bright with determination to lead the people of Wolfkrone into a new age.

Johan Dürer meets with King George in the Wolfkrone Palace. As an emissary for Rauchburg, Johan has come to ask for reinforcements for the battle about to break out nearby. This visit would set in motion the beginning of dark times for the kingdom of Wolfkrone... King George succumbs to the madness of the Evil Seed and is captured with the help of the Aval Organization. Other kingdoms fall prey to the Evil Seed as well, and reports flood in of the malfested scourge wreaking havoc across the world. Having lost its great king, the Wolfkrone Kingdom is plunged into chaos and finds itself in dire need of a new leader to serve as a beacon of hope.

Five years have passed since Hildegard von Krone became regent. The Azure Knight and his twisted legion of malfested spread turmoil across the land. With the help of those around her, Hilde manages to maintain the stability of her country and her reign by fending off invasion by the evil forces. Years of war have forged Hilde into a strong and capable ruler. No longer a helpless princess, she has become a virtuous warrior and skilled general.

Two years prior, in the year 1586, the Azure Knight who led the malfested had been defeated by an unknown hero. But even now, in 1588, Wolfkrone struggles to savor their fleeting moments of peace. Even though Nightmare was defeated, his vile servants remain. The surviving malfested are still a clear threat, slowly eating at the kingdom's strength...

A heavy burden rests on the shoulders of the young queen as she returns from battle. Her people are exhausted, threat from a neighboring kingdom looms large, and she struggles to maintain her military might. Perhaps if she can find within herself the valor befitting a monarch she could put her mind at ease. As a pale blue light rises in the sky, the young woman makes her way to the Wolfkrone Monument, where she enters the restricted area and meets with a special someone...

The war against the malfested had settled for a time, but it once again turned ferocious. Hilde receives a visitor, a man seeking assistance from the woman who stands against the cursed sword's minions. This man, who leads a group of skilled fighters calling themselves the "Hunters of the Evil Sword", is familiar to her.

The plan to strike Ostrheinsburg proceeds smoothly. Many assemble at the Stolzstadt to prepare for the battle with the Azure Knight, but Wilhelm does not show, having vanished since the argument at the monument. Despite this, Hilde resolves to press forward, her forces now prepared for the fight ahead.

Wilhelm's strange behavior, the disappearance of George, and other disconcerting information all begin to cast an ominous shadow over Hilde's offensive. She and her band of soldiers make their way to the fortress, the sun quickly shifting its gaze from them. As night draws near, Wolfkrone's best signal the others to meet them and venture into the forest.

Having defeated the evil forces commanded by Johan, Hilde and Wilhelm are now faced with an event greater threat: Hilde's once kindhearted father, the wise, heroic king George von Krone. The blade in his hands is now pointed squarely at the very people it once protected, and is wielded with a ferocity with which Gerhilde, the guard, and even the Silver Wolves struggle to contend.

Hilde's daring plan to use herself as a decoy works; she is able to find and defeat the leader of the malfested, and as a result, the malfested invasion is hindered temporarily. The Wolfkrone soldiers regain their strength and regroup, but Hilde knows the fight is far from over. The young "wolves" of the kingdom stand ready for the fight ahead as a new era dawns on Wolfkrone...

Equipment

  • Glänzende Nova & Frischer Himmel: Treasured weapons of the Wolfkrone Kingdom passed down for generations. It is the tradition and the pride of Wolfkrone for the ruler themselves to wield this sword and spear upon the battlefield. The found king known as "the Wolf" famously wielded these arms, and since then, they have been restored and refined by successive rulers into the finest weapons of each generation. When brandished by Wolfkrone's monarch, the glint of their steel has long sparked bravery in soldiers' hearts, urging them forward to forge an impressive record of glorious victories.

  • Fruchtbare Erde & Glänzende Nova: This set consists of the same short sword (Glänzende Nova) Hilde carried previously, and a new polearm (Fruchtbare Erde) that appears to be a partisan or a trident. When brandished by Wolfkrone's monarch, the glint of their steel has long sparked bravery in soldiers' hearts, urging them forward to forge an impressive record of glorious victories.

Optional Equipment

  • Corsesca & Broadsword: A corsesca is a type of polearm first developed in the 15th century, and one of many that became widely used throughout Europe after the turn of the 16th. Its name comes from the island of Corsica. The "broad" in broadsword may seem to indicate a particularly wide blade, but the name was only used to distinguish it from the thin rapier, a popular weapon at the time.
  • Scorpion: A polearm named for the scorpion woven into the flag affixed to its haft. Its head is similar to a Swiss halberd, but instead of one talon, it sports multiple. Given that the sword has similar spikes, it can be assumed that the two weapons were made as a pair.
  • Eisonowaki & Kandachi: A half-sickle spear named after a typhoon that ravaged Japan in the 10th century, and a pointed, double-edged katana, inscribed with a name meaning "thunderclap." They were originally crafted as being ceremonial offerings to the wind and thunder gods. However, in the Warring States Period, a powerful warlord demanded them as gifts, and they were eventually stained with blood on the battlefield.
  • Zhang Ba Shemao: The great general Zhang Fei served as a high-ranked warrior in mainland China during the Later Han Dynasty and early Three Kingdoms Period. Even after his death, his exploits remained well-known in song and legend, and he was eventually immortalized in the novel "Romance of the Three Kingdoms." This classic story depicts him with a serpent-shaped spear 1.8 zhang in length, but in reality, this weapon only came into use during the much later Ming Dynasty. The spearhead's serpentine curves allow it to cut deep into its enemies, leaving terrible wounds in its wake.
  • Ga-Derg & Ga-Boi: Hilde's most powerful weapon. This is a set of golden weapons, with the spear being a three-pronged trident, and the short sword being a jagged golden knife.
  • Eighteenth Hole: Hilde's joke weapon. It resembles the flags found in the holes in golf courses. The sword is a golf club held in a golf bag scabbard.

  • Lance & Ring Dagger: Lances were originally developed to harness the power of a rider on a charging horse, but Groẞe Erbschaft makes effective use of its sturdiness on foot. The Ring Dagger was forged to be ever at a warrior's side in battle, and is seen as a prayer for its wielder's safe return.
  • Trident & Baselard: A three-pronged spear, known as a trident. The long handle of the trident allows a wielder to strike at an opponent from a distance, making it difficult for the opponent to get close enough to attack. Additionally, the three prongs of the trident allow a wielder to deliver multiple blows with a single strike, increasing the chances of hitting a target. Meanwhile, a baselard is a medieval shortsword characterized by its slender blade.
  • Fake Ashigaru: Hilde's joke weapon. The spear is made of cheap wood and has some gold leaf and carvings glued on for decoration, while the sword is a katana that looks cool but is actually made of cheap steel and can barely cut through a stick of butter.
  • Scorpion: A polearm named for the scorpion woven into the flag affixed to its haft. Its head is similar to a Swiss halberd, but instead of one talon, it sports multiple. Given that the sword has similar spikes, it can be assumed that the two weapons were made as a pair.

Its name comes from the island of Corsica. The "broad" in broadsword may seem to indicate a particularly wide blade, but the name was only used to distinguish it from the thin rapier, a popular weapon at the time.
  • Lancier & Perpetuity: "Lancier" is a French word meaning "lance wielder." Lances were originally developed to harness the power of a rider on a charging horse, but Groẞe Erbschaft makes effective use of its sturdiness on foot. The sword Perpetuity was forged to be ever at a warrior's side in battle. It was given its name as a prayer for its wielder's safe return.
• Gae Dearg & Moralltach: A sword and spear said to have once been wielded by the Celtic hero Diarmuid, a Fianna warrior from the Fenian Cycle. It is said the crimson Gáe Dearg can dispel all manner of magic, while Móralltach, the Great Fury, can cleave anything in two with a single strike. Though these are not the genuine articles used by Diarmuid, they are of a superb make, worthy to bear the same names of those legendary arms.

Other

Weaknesses: Hilde's impulsive nature, pride, and self-serving tendencies can sometimes lead her to make poor decisions and cause problems for herself and others.
