Listen: This is what I've learned.

There are things we can't change, and we just have to accept that.

And maybe that's some kind of grace.''

~ Katie to Raymond

Background

Katie Clay is the main protagonist of the book Seconds.

The following contains the following biology of Katie Clay:

Early Life

Katie started her cooking career when a man named Raymond, and his boyfriend, took a chance with her cooking and helped Katie pay for her own restaurant named Seconds which she later opened with a group of friends some four years ago. Here she met Max, who she trained as a chef for the new restaurant before they began dating.

As time passed, Katie grew tired of being underpaid for her food and not having ownership of the restaurant she felt she deserved, resulting in her pursuit to owning a new restaurant. She began saving up funds and cutting costs by living in the room above Seconds, which causes issues in her and Max's relationship.

As Seconds grew in popularity, Katie needed to train more chefs such as Andrew, which made her and Max's relationship even more distant. During this time, Katie managed to get a start on her new restaurant with her business partner Arthur, who she neglected to tell Max about. This caused the two to finally break up once Max found out about Katie's second restaurant from a friend.

Meeting Lis

In one of her dreams, Katie meets a strange glowing figure standing on top of an old red dressure present in Katie's room who asks "Awake?" before saying "If things...go wrong...don't forget.". She then hops into the dresser, leaving the decriptic room and Katie in darkness.

Katie wakes up the next morning remembering none of the sequences from the dream and carries her day on normally. She visits Arthur at Lucknow Street where construction for her restaurant is in progress. Katie shares a name for her restaurant with Arthur simply called "Katie's" leaving him unimpressed.

She then returns to Seconds where she sees Max for the first time in years with his sister, Matilda. Katie begins to melt before she leaves the two with their waitress and returns to the kitchen to complain to Raymond about her restaurant's slow construction rate.

After leaving Raymond, she approaches Andrew and begins insulting his food, starting an argument in the kitchen. They continue their argument into the pantry where they make out with each other. During this time, an accident occurs in the kitchen with Hazel, burning her arms in fat. Katie took Hazel to the hospital where she complained on Twitter before leaving back to her apartment in Seconds.

Revisions

First Revision

This is when Katie remembered her dream involving the mysterious glowing figure and found a mushroom with a small note attached that said "A SECOND CHANCE AWAITS.", and a small notebook hidden behind a panel of the top drawer. She followed the instructions listed on the note, writing her mistake "I shouldn't of fooled around w/ANDREW! Workplace canoodling is NO GOOD!" and went to sleep.

As she was dreaming, Katie relieved the moment of the accident, starting with her conversation with Max and Matilda, where she melted again. Then she went straight to Andrew and complimented his cooking skills, surprising him, before demanding him to pass her the parsley for Hazel.

When Katie wakes up with a sense of unease, she goes to the hospital to check on Hazel, only to find her absent. Katie finds Hazel's address in a three-month-old unread email and arrives at the house. When Katie was let in by an old woman, Hazel entered the room, revealing her arms to be completely fine and unaffected by the past night.

In shock, Katie drives back to Seconds and checks the notebook she had written in the night before, with the text still present. She then spoke to Andrew and Patrick about the events that transpired last night in the kitchen and pantry. Neither Andrew or Patrick had recollection of the night Katie had remembered.

Katie recapped the events of both nights, concluding she must have changed the past in her dreams with the mushroom in her drawer, but only she remembered the original events.

Katie began to stalk Hazel and asked the other employees such as Yana for information regarding Hazel, showing that most feel negative towards her due to her general look and shyness.

After work hours, Hazel begins to sweep the floors, and place some wood in the fireplace, which Katie complimented Hazel for. Hazel explains that she does it for the house spirit that lives in Seconds to appease it. She explains how not doing so will make life a "living hell" if not nurtured.

The next night, Katie begins performing the same routines as Hazel did last night, believing the girl in her dream to be the house spirit to give her the mushroom

Katie wakes up the next morning calling Arthur who was out of town at a funeral. Katie reveals to Arthur in a riddle that she was parked by an old building on 771 Talmadge Street, causing Arthur to yell at Katie for beating herself up over her decision to buy Lucknow Street.

Later, Katie begins making a new recipe for her restaurant involving mushrooms, due to her craving them, which she showed off to the other employees at Seconds, who all enjoyed the food. When she told them what it was for, they all went silent and left her there, leaving her to eat the food by herself in the pantry.

While sulking and eating her leftovers, she spots a red object under the floorboards and gets Andrew to help her remove the floor, revealing the red objects to be the mushrooms she had found in her drawer the other night.

After she takes a mushroom to her room, she takes a bath and finds the mysterious girl from her dream to be sitting on the red dresser with the mushroom in her hand.

The girl reveals her name to be Lis and explains the rules of the use of the mushrooms to Katie, which Katie disregards and tells Lis to leave her room. As the two talked, Katie snatched the mushroom back and told Lis once more to leave her room, which she does followed by teleporting all the furniture around as a parting gift to Katie.

Katie asks around if anyone had seen Lis, with no confirmation on her whereabouts until Katie sees Hazel drawing a sketch that resembles Lis. Hazel says the drawing was what she thought the house spirit looked like, surprising Katie.

Katie takes Hazel to her room in hopes of showing her Lis by luring her out with the mushroom. Although Katie's attempt did work, she finds out only she can see Lis due to her being the "owner" of Seconds, confusing her as she was not the legal owner of Seconds until she realized that her room was hers.

Katie goes out and gets a burger from Fast Eddy Burger and returns to find Max back at Seconds hoping to talk with Katie. The two meet face to face and exchange an awkward fist bump, only for Katie to flee to her bathroom when her stomach begins to groan. Wanting to undo the embarrassing turn of events, Katie decides to use the mushroom she had picked from below the pantry.

Second Revision

Katie starts by asking Andrew for a healthy salad instead of the burger she had bought. She then confronts Max and confidently fist bumps him before explaining to him how she felt bad for not talking with him the other night. She then explains how she's a busy person who has little time for small talk, causing Max's smile to falter. Katie then leaves Max at his table, telling him to stop stalking her, and wakes up the next morning feeling amazing.

Katie checks in on the construction for her restaurant where her contractor explains the condition of the building makes the construction difficult for the crew. Katie notices a hole in the wall, which the contractor says was an old fireplace blocked off. Inside, Katie finds an old tar-black pot which she takes back to Seconds and shows to everyone.

After Andrew and Patrick get a look at the pot, they immediately begin comparing it to a witch's pot, and even envision Hazel as a witch when she holds it, which Katie dismisses and tells Hazel they're jealous of her. Hazel then shows Katie the bottom of the pot, which forms a red tree filled with numerous lights at the bottom to Katie. However when Katie points it out, no one seems to notice.

Katie goes to the pantry and pours the dirt at the bottom of the pot on the mushrooms which she thought would make good soil for the mushrooms. Katie then takes the pot to her room. Where she kept a stash of mushrooms.

Third, Fourth, and Fifth Revisions

After closing hours, Katie and the other employees get drunk and begin acting up in front of Raymond, which Katie regrets later and decides to revise. She writes "I should not have drunken so much." before eating a mushroom and going to sleep.

After her third revision, she stays up all night watching Baking Bad on VideoZ. She decides to make another revision and writes in her notebook "Should have gone to bed early".

The next day, she seduces Andrew into sleeping with her, which she decides to change with her fifth mushroom.

While Katie texts in the bathroom, she receives a message from her contractor who wants twelve-thousand dollars by the next day. She sends several messages to Arthur before calling her dad and lying about the situation, along with her relationship status with Max.

Katie lays on the floor, staring off into the ceiling when she is approached by Lis, who smells the mushrooms from her pot and begins tearing Katie's room apart with her telekinesis. When Lis finds it, Katie grabs it and runs out of the house to her car where she attempts to eat a mushroom, but fails. She remembers the rules of the mushrooms and how she couldn't eat a mushroom out of Seconds, then leaves the pot of mushrooms in her car and goes back inside.

Katie catches Hazel about to leave and asks her to stay after hours to help appease Lis. Although Hazel was hesitant, Katie was able to blindly manipulate her into helping with Lis.

Hazel helps Katie put bread on the rafters and gets fresh clothes for Lis to wear. While the two waited, they began striking up conversations about their status at Seconds and drinking. Soon after, Lis appears and begins eating the bread on the rafters before approaching the clothes. A brief pause later, Lis eats the clothes, causing Katie to burst out in laughter.

Both Katie and Hazel continue talking when Hazel spots a particular picture on the wall of Max. Katie explains how they used to date and what Seconds was like for her several years back. She then explains the reasoning they broke up, causing Hazel to cry. Suddenly, Katie realizes her and Max's entire relationship happened at Seconds and that she could change her past.

Sixth Revision

Katie starts her dream off outside Seconds with Max, where she gets the idea of a new restaurant and asks Max to be a part of it. Max agrees and smiles as the two kiss.

Before awakening, Katie sees the mushrooms beneath the floorboards covered in a dark liquid-like substance, waking her up in a cold sweat. When she looks to her right, she sees Max sleeping next to her.

Max wakes up and takes a shower while Katie explores her revamped room, causing her to nearly hyperventilate at the thought of Max living with her.

The two drive to Lucknow to check with their contractor, who was charging eighteen-thousand dollars now instead of the original twelve-thousand, along with telling Max to calm his "wife" down. As Katie retaliates, she notices the wedding ring on her hand, which Max also had, confirming they were married.

They return to Seconds, where the employees praise Max and are glad to see him, which Katie was jealous of. Andrew passes by and checks on Katie. He asks if Max was nearby before making out with her, which she joins in on. Raymond sees the two and confronts Katie, telling her to stop due to how disrespectful it was to everyone at Seconds.

Katie and Hazel meet later at a store to shop, where they recap the events of the previous night. Katie reaffirms the idea of Lis being a house spirit when bringing up the age of Seconds and the mushrooms. Hazel then brings up how the revisions are like "traversing probability space" and that Lis must use them to change minor details all the time. Hazel questions why Lis would allow Katie to start making massive changes, which Katie lies about having no idea.

That night, Max vents to Katie about their decision for Lucknow Street and their current contractor's behavior. Katie decides to make another revision to go for Talmadge Street instead of their current investment, writing in her notebook "I should have picked Talmadge instead of Lucknow". Which Lis finds out about.

Irritated, Lis mocks Katie when she says to leave her alone. Lis then hops on the back of Katie's head and teleports the two to a purple void with small lights surrounding them and a massive red tree. Lis opens the tree's bark like the red dresser and lays in the top-right corner of the first drawer, bringing the two back into Katie's room.

Despite what Lis showed Katie, she eats the mushroom regardless, not knowing the context behind the vision Lis showed Katie. Lis turns red with anger, scaring Katie underneath her covers in a "defiant and cool way" before she falls asleep.

Seventh Revision

Katie returns to the moment where her, Max, and Arthur are drinking and choosing what to buy for their restaurant. Katie suggests they go for Talmadge instead of Lucknow, which they agree to.

The black substance from before begins to form a humanoid figure from the mushrooms with yellow and red eyes, causing Katie to wake up in another cold sweat.

In the morning, Katie acts clueless to the schedule they had planned, which disappoints Max. When the two get into the vehicle, Katie says "her restaurant" causing Max to get angry. Upon their arrival at Talmadge, Katie admires the interior, but finds other aspects to be off, annoying her.

A woman, who is supposedly the graphic designer, confronts Katie and Max, who Max responds to in a cheerful manner. Katie has no recollection of her, however, despite the two having apparently met in the past. This upsets Katie, as she begins to realize the consequences of her revisions and if her actions for Max were worth it. When the graphic designer presents a handful of logo designs with the name "MK2" she asks about her original name, Katie's. This causes Max to, once again, get angry with Katie's choice of words.

Before returning to Seconds, Katie and Max drive by Lucknow to see the building in even worse condition than when she bought it in her previous revisions. Max states how they made the right choice in going for Talmadge, making Katie slightly emotional.

Katie enters her room to stash the witch's pot in her nightstand, unaware that Lis was watching from the rafters. She confronts Andrew and tells him how their relationship needs to end, with Andrew calling her a hypocrite. Andrew states how Katie was manipulating him when all he wanted was respect from her as a chef, confusing Katie.

Katie checks in on Max who fakes a smile before he leaves to go out. Katie decides to get a mushroom when she notices the witch's pot was missing, and Lis was sitting behind her on top of the dresser. As Lis reaches for Katie's nightstand drawer, she recoils at the site of the pot and vanishes. Katie takes the opportunity to eat a mushroom and make her eighth revision.

Eighth Revision

Katie starts the day with a more positive mood and with the meeting at Talmadge in mind, causing a more positive reaction from Max. From there on, Katie refers to the restaurant as "[their] restaurant" and goes along with the name they chose.

Although the conversation with Andrew had no major difference, Max stayed that night with Katie, leaving the two on good terms. Before awakening, Katie sees the dark humanoid figure leak out of the pantry, waking her up drenched in sweat.

Ninth and Tenth Revision

The next morning was a dark and stormy day. While cooking new recipes for the MK2 menu, Katie and Max start fighting, causing the two to act even worse than the day prior.

The day ends with Max seeming more disappointed with Katie than the previous day, causing him to leave again. Katie began to worry due to only having four mushrooms left, and questioned if she could really change everything to be perfect with those four.

She changes her mood to be more positive towards Max, causing a similar pattern to the eighth revision, only with the humanoid figure appearing even closer to Katie, and causing her to wake up in tears. Max comforts her while she freaks out about losing him again, which he denies will happen.

The Nightmare

Katie wakes up in a room that resembles her first dream's dream sequence. Katie walks over to the window to see a world of chaos. Seconds was floating in the air, while the rest of the city was covered in fire and smoke. Lis's mushrooms were growing around the houses below, while massive skeletons roamed the area, destroying all they stepped on.

The next morning, Katie visits Hazel at her house uninvited. Katie attempts to strike up conversations about her room and clothes, but ends up being awkward exchanges. Hazel suddenly remembers an old picture book she found in her attic.

The story involved a family who had just moved to a new house. But unknown to them, they had accidentally brought their original house spirit with them, which resembled a short elf-like man with a large beard and orange pointy ears. This causes the new house spirit, a green monster-like cleaning lady with branches for hair, to fight with the old house spirit. It becomes harder for the family to appease both, as they liked different things. This forces the family to leave the house after they fail to appease the spirits.

Hazel connects the similarities to their current situation at Seconds. This leads Hazel to believe the witch's pot was the home of another house spirit, and Katie let it in to Seconds.

Katie enters the kitchen of Seconds in hopes of confronting the house spirit from Lucknow. On her way however, she notices a skeleton walk past her, causing her to freak out. She spots even more skeletons in her kitchen who resembled the old employees. She approaches Andrew who treats the skeletons as if they were normal, causing Katie to freak out even more.

Andrew discusses what Katie had said the other day, and how they'll never be friends like he wanted to and to just move on. He leaves Katie, with Max overhearing their conversation. Max chases after Katie to their room, before she locks the door on him and looks into the witch's pot where her last three mushrooms sat. Max picks up Katie's notebook which she dropped outside the door, and begins to read it, bringing tears to Katie's eyes. Katie remembers the rules for the mushrooms, and grabs an old recipe to write on. She writes "I should have FIRED Andrew after two weeks for being such a cocky loudmouth". Before trying to sleep over Max's yelling.

Eleventh Revision

Katie goes back two weeks after Andrew was hired and fires him, causing him to disappear from the kitchen completely.

She wakes up with her notebook outside the door and Max nowhere to be seen. On her way down the stairs, the entire world shakes and nearly knocks her down, realizing she had lost control of the world around her.

The state of the dining room furthered this notion, as the interior was completely overhauled. Along with the additional skeletons, there was a band, a completely new menu, and outfits that Katie supposedly picked out for the staff, according to Raymond.

Things suddenly seemed normal when Katie saw Max, who was cooking some food in the kitchen. For a moment, Katie was happy, until the entire kitchen flashed red and Max was with Yana. When Katie confronts Max, he has no recollection of her ever being an employee at Seconds, causing her to cry.

Katie goes to find Hazel, who was serving a table. Katie grabs her arm and offers to take her home. As the two leave, Hazel notices burns on her arms and looks up to see a bruised Lis sitting on the rafters and looking down, saddening Hazel.

The snowfall was heavy as Katie drove, slowly consuming the city. Katie asks Hazel where she lives, only for Hazel to respond clueless, then vanish from the car. Another moment later, Katie was in the bed of the room from her nightmare.

The Broken World

Katie looks around and sees the book from Hazel's house. She picks it up and sees Lis in front of her sitting on the red dresser. Katie throws the book, blaming Lis for the mushrooms. Katie then demands for Lis to undo the mushrooms' effects, only for Lis to mutter "No more magic, or mushrooms." Lis then explains how the other house spirit gets what she wants, and that Lis was scared. After Katie scolds Lis for letting her get pushed around so easily, Lis demands to fight, which surprises Katie. Suddenly, the dark spirit appears, scaring Lis away back into her dresser. The spirit then throws the dresser out of the room and lashes at Katie, incapacitating her.

Katie wakes up in her room with Max beside her, only the Max lying next to her was a rotting statue that crumbled at her touch. Katie falls to her feet and hears an ominous voice from above the crumbled Seconds; The Spirit.

The spirit begins to explain how the "world" was silent without the Katie that left it, and that her and Katie made it perfect. For a split second, Katie knew what she meant, and that each revision was an entirely different world where another Katie had lived out her life.

Katie tries to reason with the spirit, saying how she needs to take her home to Lucknow. The spirit declines and demands to stay at Seconds where Katie has made it better. Katie desperately explains how Seconds isn't theirs anymore, and that the two pushed away the people they cared about by pursuing Seconds. Katie then offers to start anew at Lucknow, which causes the spirit to shrink down to her humanoid form; a reflection of Katie herself.

Katie takes the pot back to the fire place in Lucknow, which automatically starts a fire after throwing a wooden chair onto the pot. Katie and the spirit sit next to the fire for warmth, and smile at each other.

Katie went to her car in hopes of searching for Lis out at Seconds's remains. As she looked in the back seat, she saw a singular mushroom sitting on the ground. She held the mushroom in her hand as she drove back to the remains of Seconds in search of Lis. Luckily, Katie finds a piece of the red dresser with Lis inside curled up in the corner. Katie gives Lis the last mushroom, which she begins to nibble at, and lays next to Lis as the snowfall continues.

Katie's return home

Katie wakes up the next morning in the hospital, where Athur waited for her awakening. Relieved, Arthur explains how she was found with little to no food in her system which was insulting for a chef of her calibur. After a nap, Katie wakes up with Hazel next to her bed. Confused, Katie questions how the two were even friends. Hazel gave her side of the story and explained how her weird interests sparked a friendship between the two after the accident. Despite all that happened, this singular friendship remained the same.

Soon after Katie leaves the hospital with Arthur and returns to Seconds, she sees Max pacing the parking lot waiting for her. The two exchange a simple greeting before admitting how they missed each other and were tired of faking their way through life. The two share a hug before Katie asks Max to make her a sandwich.

Later life

Next spring, Seconds gets its first paint job since it opened four years back. Life for Katie and the others went back to normal, with Katie learning that not all things can be changed in life.

Andrew moves out to the big city and becomes a chef for a new restaurant. With Andrew gone, Patrick becomes the new head chef and asks Hazel out that same day.

Lucky's opens up

Weeks later, Lucky's opens up way over its budget, but doing exceptionally well. Katie and Max mention how it's packed every night and that it was often said there was a "real energy" to Lucky's.

Despite Katie moving out of her apartment with Max, for years to come she would revisit Seconds at night and place bread on the rafters for Lis. Despite this, she never saw another house spirit again.

Powers and Abilities:

Human Achievements (Is a professional chef and business owner), Breaking the Fourth Wall (Is aware of the narrator and can speak with them), Vehicular Mastery, Immortality (Type 9. Across the multiverse, a countless number of Katies exist who all travel to a different timeline when they make a revision. When Katie isn't in a timeline, a new one shows up. And in timelines where a version of Katie hasn't been present, it begins to erase itself and the inhabitants), Time Paradox Immunity (Type 1. Was unaffected by the merging of multiple timelines and events), Social Influencing (Easily manipulated Hazel), Extrasensory Perception (Can see Lis, who is a house spirit), Toon Force, Precognition (Type 1. Foresaw events of the final timeline such as massive skeletons roaming around and the destruction of her world), Law Manipulation (Subspace can shape reality to the user's liking. An example being Scott Pilgrim and the various video game-like aspects of the world, which are a result of Subspace and its perspective-based abilities), Perspective Manipulation (Potent Subspace users can use the perspective-based powers of Subspace to overwrite reality to fit how they view it in the real world), Avatar Creation (Has an avatar in subspace she unconsciously creates), Dimensional Travel & Space-Time Manipulation (Characters can manifest doors directly to subspace, or even move between subspace and the real world through sheer force. Breaking the walls between subspace and the main universe), Mind Manipulation (Entering Subspace directly accesses one's mind and subconscious thoughts), Sheer Will (Those who can access the powers of Subspace in the real world naturally require a strong will and determination to control them), Plot Manipulation (Types 2 & 3. Through the power of Subspace, characters can rewrite and manipulate the plotline of their story. It's also implied throughout the various stories that Katie, along with other major characters such as Scott Pilgrim, are protected by a sort of plot armor to help them in dire situations), Subjective Reality & Dimensional Storage (Whatever the user can imagine will be created in subspace. For instance, Scott manifested his love for Ramona as the Power of Love, which he can pull from and store in Subspace), Portal Creation & Summoning (As the powers of the characters originate from Subspace, they can create portals or summon beings and objects from their subspace)

All previous powers and abilities to an unknown extent. Regeneration (Low-Godly. Subspace avatars are avatars of pure cognition of one's true self and by extension can be restored by the true form at will), Immortality (Type 3, 5, 6, and 8. Subspace avatars are avatars of pure cognition of one's true self and by extension can be restored by the true form at will. Concepts such as death are irrelevant to them as even if one dies they will just be sent into subspace. Even spirits can freely pass through and from Subspace. All damage done to a subspace avatar means nothing to them, Scott could lose his limbs in subspace and be cut in half and would still be perfectly fine), Abstract Existence (Type 1. The subspace avatar is a being of pure cognition, existing as a mere thought in the realm of subspace, with the effects done to their body being useless as it will always regenerate back or be unaffected by acts such as cutting it in half, even if the true user dies the subspace avatar will still exist), Acausality (Type 3. Subspace is a different space-time where all rules are different (including death), thus it should by extension be a different system of causality), Perspective Manipulation (Perception is Law. People, items, and Mind Subspace itself are based on the nature of the person's mind, therefore, however, a person imagines Subspace is how it will appear. A good example is Scott's Dream Desert: this location is repeatedly used as a metaphor for Scott's loneliness but also is his projected image of Subspace at that time which Ramona is able to pass through), Law Manipulation (One’s subspace operates under their rules and systems which can extend even to the real world with characters like Gideon affecting Ramona’s Subspace), Reality Warping & Mind Manipulation (While Mind Subspace allows for others' own projected images of themselves to take on other forms, the individual whom the Subspace resides in retains all power and control within said mind. Through this, the character can shape themselves and Subspace to their liking all through their thoughts, perspectives, and desires), Power Nullification (A user of Subspace can completely nullify any connection an opponent has in that Subspace, regardless if they're more powerful or not. This is how Ramona was able to expel Gideon despite him being a master of Subspace and able to manipulate it inside anyone's mind), Dimensional Travel (Can enter her avatars at any point if she so desires even after death)

Reality Warping, Timeline Manipulation and Event Manipulation (Changed her past and her past events many times in the story), Probability Manipulation (The abilities of the mushrooms are described by Hazel as traversing probability space and changing the destinies of everyone in Seconds), Spatial Manipulation (The other spirit's use of the mushrooms were changing space each revision), Transmutation (She turned a variety of people into skeletons with her revisions), Existence Erasure (Type 3, possibly type 4. Erased all of Andrew from the timeline, along with the entire timeline itself), Fusionism (Merged the events of other timelines into one), Healing (The mushrooms managed to restore Lis back to her prime and allow her to travel back to Katie's original timeline)

Standard Equipment: Mushrooms

Intelligence: Above Average (Is the co-owner of Lucky's and is deemed the best chef in her city for three years in a row)

Weaknesses: Sufficient use of the mushrooms will began to corrupt the timeline and erase things that Katie doesn't intend on erasing.
