I guess I'll go... super.
~ Trunks, moments before turning into a Super Saiyan in front of his father for the first time

Background

Trunks is a Human-type Earthling/Saiyan hybrid, the firstborn child and only son of Vegeta and Bulma and the older brother of Bulla.

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Trunk’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

Background
Trunks is born in November of Age 766 to Vegeta and Bulma, thus making him a Saiyan and Human hybrid, like Gohan. He was an illegitimate child due to the fact that he was conceived as a result of a brief affair between his parents. In his infancy, he was well-loved and doted on by his mother, but it appeared as if his father had little to no parental emotions towards the boy due to the former never wanting to have children and viewing hybrids as a disgrace. However, after the end of the Cell Games, the relationship between his parents improved and they got married, and they began raising Trunks as a family.

During Trunks' childhood, he was lavished with attention by his mother and her family, but Vegeta proved to be stricter regarding Trunks' training and behavior. Trunks came to idolize his father, and they developed a good relationship, despite Vegeta's frequent absences from the family and unwillingness to do certain family activities.

Cell Saga
Two years after Future Trunks' arrival, Trunks is born to Vegeta and Bulma. Initially, Vegeta is uninterested in his son, and Trunks is cared for by Bulma and her family. Although he acknowledged the boy as his child, Vegeta rarely saw Trunks while he and the rest of the Z Fighters prepared for the battle against the androids and eventual conflict with Cell, to the point Trunks would cry whenever Vegeta got close to him.

On the day of the Androids’ arrival, Bulma brings Trunks to introduce him to the Z Fighters. Gohan and Krillin quickly assume Yamcha is the father but are shocked when Goku corrects them by saying Vegeta is the father. Bulma asks how Goku knew this because she wanted to surprise everyone, and Goku lies he was guessing because Trunks looks just like Vegeta. As the Z Fighters face off against Android 19 and 20 (who is actually Dr. Gero), Bulma decides to head to the battlefield to see the Androids and let Vegeta see Trunks, and she forces Yajirobe to accompany her. He is terrified to get too close to the battle and threatens to throw Trunks if she doesn't any stop, but she threatens to tell Vegeta he is being mean to Trunks. During the fight with Dr. Gero, Trunks and his mother are briefly put in danger when Android 20 destroys the vehicle they were traveling in. However, they are saved by Future Trunks, who intervened when Vegeta failed due to his indifference towards Bulma and their son. Piccolo reveals Future Trunks' identity as his son's future counterpart to Vegeta when he referred to Future Trunks by name and later revealed Future Trunks' identity to Bulma, who was relieved to know that Trunks wouldn't grow up to look like his father. Gohan then takes Trunks and Bulma back to Capsule Corp. for their safety. A couple of days later, Trunks goes with his mother to deliver the detonation device to Krillin and then heads to The Lookout while Vegeta and Future Trunks battle Cell. While waiting for Cell's broadcast for the Cell Games at home, Trunks playfully pulls his counterpart's hair, which everyone saves for Future Trunks finds humorous. After Cell was defeated, Trunks is seen learning how to walk, and Vegeta starts to take a more active role in raising Trunks, having come to accept him as his son after Cell killed Future Trunks during the Cell Games, and this act left Vegeta enraged and guilt-ridden.

Great Saiyaman Saga
Seven years following Cell's defeat, Trunks takes a much larger role. Trunks is eight years old and fantastically strong for his age. He was trained by Vegeta since he learned how to walk. As a result, he was able to transform into a Super Saiyan at age 8, as well as become acclimated to the state without Vegeta's knowledge. This is first shown on-screen while he is training in a Gravity Room with Vegeta, when he cannot handle the gravity in his normal state. He then transforms out of nowhere and leaps around naturally in gravity that at first was supposedly overwhelming him. This comes as a massive shock to Vegeta considering his young age but makes him proud to see his son becoming stronger. Vegeta asks Trunks to attack him to test Trunks' strength, but when Trunks hesitates, Vegeta promises to take him to the amusement park if he landed one punch on him. Trunks succeeds but is punched down by accident and reveals he is a little stronger than Goten for being older.

World Tournament Saga
On the day of the 25th World Martial Arts Tournament, Trunks is dismayed to be sent to the Junior Division and easily makes it all the way to the grand finals and becomes the new junior champion by defeating his best friend Goten, the second son of Goku and Chi-Chi (by becoming a Super Saiyan, firing an energy blast which knocked Goten out of the ring, and using his left arm; all three of which Trunks had agreed not to do, though Goten had cheated too and became a Super Saiyan earlier in the fight). When Trunks is set up against Mr. Satan, Satan asks him to only lightly tap in on the face, knowing how much power Trunks has. However, even Trunks' light tap is enough to launch Mr. Satan out of the ring, allowing Trunks to win the match. However, the crowd thinks Mr. Satan did it deliberately to be nice to Trunks.

He convinces Goten to secretly compete in the adult division disguised as Mighty Mask, but Android 18 realizes this and blows their cover with a Destructo Disc while in the match, disqualifying them and the boys flee to avoid getting in trouble.

Majin Buu Saga
Shortly after Trunks learned about Majin Buu from Videl, he and Goten eagerly fly to the battlefield and find Piccolo and Krillin turned into as stone by Dabura. Trunks accidentally breaks Piccolo. After Krillin returns to normal when Majin Buu kills Dabura, Trunks thinks he killed Piccolo and asks Goten to keep it a secret from Vegeta. He is then shocked to see Piccolo is alive moments before Vegeta shows up to fight Majin Buu. Trunks cheers for his father but quickly realizes Vegeta cannot win, and he tries to help his father battle the monster. As Majin Buu torments Vegeta, Trunks rushes in and saves him. Vegeta orders Trunks to escape for his own safety but Trunks wants to stay and help his father fight Majin Buu and is hugged for the first time by his father, but he and Goten are knocked out by Vegeta who blew himself up to try to destroy Majin Buu, albeit failing. The boys are taken to the Lookout to take shelter from Majin Buu. When they wake up, the boys learn that Vegeta and Gohan are dead, which makes them cry as Trunks becomes upset of his father's death, and Trunks angrily asks Goku why he did not save his father. Goku tells them about the Fusion Dance to defeat Majin Buu but Trunks has doubts. Babidi makes an announcement to the world that if Goten, Trunks and Piccolo do not come out of hiding they are going to destroy more cities. The boys witness Majin Buu murder hundreds of innocent people and are determined to defeat the monster. Then Babidi announces he has learned Trunks lives in West City and intends to destroy it next, making him fear for his grandparents who are still there. Goku orders Trunks to rush to Capsule Corporation to get the Dragon Radar. Goku intercepts Babidi and Majin Buu from following Trunks and shows them the Super Saiyan 3 form. Majin Buu and Goku fight while Trunks gets the Dragon Radar. Later, Trunks returns to the Lookout with the Dragon Radar and shows Goku his respect. Then, Goku shows them the Fusion Dance and, only in the anime, shows them Super Saiyan 3. However, Goku's time on Earth is ended and he leaves Piccolo to teach the boys the rest of the Fusion Dance. Everyone on Kami's Lookout says goodbye to Goku as he leaves with Fortuneteller Baba to the Other World. Piccolo and Krillin take over teaching the Fusion Dance to the boys.

When it is time for the fusion, Trunks and Goten's first attempt fails due to Trunks making a mistake with his fingers. Their second attempt also fails when their index fingers don't touch, much to Piccolo's frustration at the failed attempts. The third attempt successfully creates Gotenks, who then rushes to fight Majin Buu but is quickly beaten. After a little training, they fuse again but due to Gotenks wasting time by playing around, they defuse before fighting Majin Buu. When Super Buu arrives at the Lookout, Trunks and Goten enter the Hyperbolic Time Chamber to train. Piccolo warns them Super Buu will enter the room in a minute, which gives them six hours in the room.

Later, Super Buu and Piccolo enter, and just before the two boys get to fuse, Super Buu punches Trunks who angrily tells him to wait. He and Goten soon fuse into Gotenks, but are not strong enough to beat him. When Gotenks pretended to be tired and low on energy, Piccolo destroys the entrance to the chamber, but Super Buu escapes and eats the remaining Z-Fighters and support on the Lookout (except Dende who was thrown off by Mr. Popo). Gotenks finally escapes, thanks to his Super Saiyan 3 transformation and, after learning Super Buu turned everyone into chocolate and ate them, Gotenks angrily vows to kill him. Gotenks fights Super Buu again, almost defeating him until they defuse right at the killing blow. Trunks and Goten witness Gohan returning from the Sacred World of the Kai with his new powers and easily overpowering Super Buu. When Super Buu escapes, the crew find Dende, picking up Mr. Satan and his dog along the way. When Super Buu asks for a rematch against Gotenks, they fuse, but Super Buu tricks them and absorbs them to become stronger. After being set free from Super Buu by the newly revived Goku and the still deceased Vegeta, Trunks is killed along with Goten, Piccolo, and Gohan when Kid Buu uses the Planet Burst attack and destroys the Earth.

Trunks is later revived by the Namekian Dragon Balls, and lends energy to Goku's Super Spirit Bomb when Vegeta requests energy to all the Earthlings and its creatures. He and Goten also get a group of people to lend a hand as well. When Kid Buu is decimated, Trunks and his friends return to Kami's Lookout, soon joined by Vegeta, Goku, Mr. Buu, Dende, and Mr. Satan. He is thrilled to see his father again and runs to him with his mother, rejoicing in open arms. The peace is disrupted when Trunks spots Buu near Mr. Satan, not knowing Buu has turned to the good side. In anger, Trunks prepares an energy attack to fire, but Goku and Vegeta manage to explain the situation, and the group discusses their adventure. Trunks is later seen at a party at his home in celebration of their victory.

Peaceful World Saga
Ten years pass after Kid Buu's defeat, 18-year-old Trunks has a new younger sister named Bulla. He is forced by Vegeta to compete in the 28th World Martial Arts Tournament. Although in the original Japanese dialogue, there is no mention of a girlfriend by Trunks, in the Funimation dub, Trunks promises Goten that he would introduce him to his girlfriend after the tournament (of which his girlfriend is also watching). He ends up being paired up with Otokosuki, who manages to startle Trunks by visually flirting with him. Trunks is not seen competing in this tournament, due to Goku and Uub's leaving the competition at the end of the series. He is seen, however, holding Pan's arm in victory over defeating Goten.

Powers and Abilities

Superhuman Physical Characteristics, Martial Arts (Son Goten was trained by martial artists such as Chi-Chi, and can compete in the World Martial Arts Tournament), Acrobatics, Enhanced Senses, Extrasensory Perception, Flight, Longevity (Saiyans can keep their youth until around 80 years old), Rage Power (Mere rage can amplify a saiyan to a level that's believed to be a myth even by the highest levels of saiyans in the verse), Damage Boost (Saiyans attack power rises when health is low), Reactive Power Level (As a Saiyan, his power level will increase after a tough battle), Chi Manipulation & Ki Manipulation (Goten can generate Ki for attacks. All beings in Dragon Ball have ki , the very life force energy of all characters, ki allows a fighter to extend beyond their bodies limits, allowing them to even block attacks that would otherwise kill them from raising their guard, higher level users can lower their own durability to allow people far below them to fatally wound them. A users ki aura can exert itself as a weapon to attack), Attack Reflection (All Ki users are able to reflect attacks just by being stronger than their opponent. Examples include, Nappa deflecting a masenko from Son Gohan, Son Gohan being able to bounce back the spirit bomb, Son Goku deflecting a crusher ball from Jeice, Frieza deflecting a Final Burst Cannon from Vegeta, Son Goku reflecting multiple death beams back to back from Frieza, and Future Trunks being able to completely repel an energy blast with his hand from a Frieza Soldier just by being much stronger than them), Homing Attack (Ki users can create attacks that will home in and chase a target forever), Mind Manipulation (Characters can link their ki together and train within each other’s mind enacting in image training), Power Absorption & Transferal (Ki users can transfer their ki to others and absorb the ki given to them from others), Aura (He can surround himself in an aura of Ki. Has an aura of ki surrounding him whenever he exerts ki), Vibration Manipulation (Powerful ki users can cause the very ground itself to shake when they power up), Pseudo-Fear Manipulation, Limited Soul Manipulation & Pain Manipulation (Ki is the manifestation of one’s lifeforce, along with the aura giving one the feeling of being crushed, exerting fear into the target, sometimes making them incapable of moving as their body is instinctively stuck due to the sheer difference in power), Energy Manipulation (Ki is the latent power in one's body, this latent power allows them to form and create energy from controlling their ki, which can be used to shoot out energy blast), Explosion Manipulation (Ki attacks can create massive explosions, control the ki to set off a huge explosion under the enemy, or in front of them), Heat Manipulation (Ki user's ki attacks produce heat allowing them to cook and grill animals and raw meat[1][2], along with leaving behind steam after the attacks hit an area, showing its latent heat), Power Nullification (Those with ki can nullify attacks of lesser ki with their ki alone. They can also catch and nullify ki attacks around their level through focusing enough[3]), Forcefield Creation (Ki users such as Cell can generate forcefields around themselves. These forcefields can be expanded, and used to protect others and defend against attacks far higher then the user), Self-Destruction (Ki users in Dragon Ball are able to release all of the energy within them to cause a massive self-destruction of energy that normally kills the user and turns them into dust though one can control it to surviving but having no stamina or energy left), Light Manipulation (Ki can be used as a flash of light), Non-Physical Interaction (Those with Ki were able to harm the Ghost Warriors), Healing (Ki can be used to heal beings, allowing them to survive even with half their torso, it can also heal from near death), Fusionism (Trunks can perform the Fusion Dance)

Limited Resistance to Durability Negation (Ki users can focus their energy to localize an object to a specific spot to stop them from attempting to destroy their organs/insides), Resistance to Extreme Heats, Extreme Colds, & Air Manipulation (Can survive in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, which contains sub-zero temperatures to over one hundred degrees temperatures, along with the chamber having 1/4th the air of the regular world and ten times gravity), Mind Manipulation (The original Super Saiyan was consumed by its own rage and power losing any sense of itself it had, Goten is capable of maintaining Super Saiyan for as long as he wants)

Standard Equipment

Nothing notable.

Notable Techniques

*Flight: The ability to fly using ki.

  • Ki Blast: The most basic form of energy wave.
  • Ki Sense: An ability that allows the user to sense ki and power levels.
  • Rapid Movement: The fighter moves with great speed, which creates the illusion of teleportation.
  • Vision Smash: Trunks dodges the opponent's attack, flies above them and punches them in the face. He then appears behind them whilst saying "Behind you!" and kicks them away.
  • Double Buster: First, Trunks brings both his arms to the side of his torso and changes his ki. Then, he extends his arms forward and fires a golden energy wave at the opponent, inflicting a high amount of damage.
    • Trick Buster: First, Trunks opens his hands forward and charges a yellow energy sphere. Then, Trunks fires the sphere, which creates a sizable dome of energy on impact, inflicting a high amount of damage.
  • Big Tree Cannon: Trunks starts the attack by extending his arms to both sides of himself and forms two golden or blue energy spheres. Then, he brings his arms in front of him and holds out his hands with his index fingers pointed outward like a child pretending to use a gun and fires a large golden energy wave at the opponent, inflicting a high amount of damage.
  • Energy Burst: The user usually brings their arms to their sides, charges up ki, and then he throws his hands forward one after another as he rapidly fires many energy blasts.
  • Fusion Dance: A short series of poses that are performed by two characters of equal power levels and roughly equal size. To correctly perform the Fusion, the fusees must strike the poses in a perfectly symmetrical image of one another. The result of a correctly performed Fusion Dance is a superior being whose power is multiplied several-fold over that of the individual fusees. If the dance is performed incorrectly, it will result in an obese or skinny character who is much weaker than either fusee individually.

*Super Saiyan: Trunks gains the power to become a Super Saiyan at a very young age. He was capable transforming before his first appearance onscreen during his training with his father, Vegeta, while they are preparing for the 25th World Martial Arts Tournament by training inside a gravity chamber; the Super Saiyan transformation allows Trunks to withstand, and easily run around at 150 times the gravity of Earth, which he was barely able to walk around before transforming. He briefly uses the Super Saiyan form to fight Goten during the Grand Finals of Junior Division, and he uses it several more times during battles in Dragon Ball Z.

*Gotenks: Gotenks is the fusion created when Goten and Trunks perform the fusion dance. Gotenks' power far surpasses either of the fighters' individual strengths other than Gohan and Goku. He attains the Super Saiyan and Super Saiyan 3 forms. Goten and Trunks are capable of fusing into Gotenks within 0.05 seconds. They use the technique several times as kids. As young adults, in Dragon Ball GT, Goten and Trunks are tempted to fuse into Gotenks to try and help their fathers but are told not to by Gohan. The Fused Warrior Gotenks shares both Goten and Trunks' playfulness as well as their special attacks and new moves that Goten and Trunks do not have, such as Super Ghost Kamikaze Attack as well as Galactic Donut or Charging Ultra Buu Buu Volleyball.

Other

Standard Tactics: Trunks will start off with hand to hand combat along with using ki blast.

Weaknesses: Due to the nature of ki draining stamina and energy, Dragon Ball characters ki usage requires them to usually use their higher levels of energy in short bursts, allowing them to not be able to tank or die to far lower attacks such as attacks that have destroyed the planets of several worlds.

Note: Some clips used on the profile come from an anime or movie due to the fact that some abilities from ki use shouldn't function much differently from how they can in canon, along with this sometimes the anime version/video game version of a scene will be used for cleaner visuals. Toriyama himself directly overlooks scenes in the anime and movies and gives Toei the thumbs up[4].

Trivia

  • Trunks' grandfather, Dr. Brief, made him a time machine toy that looks like the one Future Trunks arrived in. He also had a Goku doll.
  • His unusual name comes from the running joke of his family members all being named after various undergarments, though these are downplayed in the English anime, and the word "trunks" can have several meanings, such as plural for tree trunk (interestingly enough, he uses an attack called Big Tree Cannon). The English dub of Dragon Ball Z has his name as Trunks Brief and Dragon Ball GT dub identifies him as Mr. Brief during his appearances as President of Capsule Corp.
  • In Dragon Ball SD, Goku wonders if Bulma will name her child Fundoshi (after a type of loincloth).
  • Trunks inherited Vegeta's prideful attitude and his low opinion of Goku, as seen when Goku arrives on Earth for his one-day revival pass, where he and Vegeta look upon the emotional scene of Goku reuniting with everyone, and even meeting Goten for the first time with total indifference. However, Trunks does respect Goku as a warrior after witnessing his Super Saiyan 3 transformation, and in Wrath of the Dragon, expresses genuine concern for Goku's well-being after he is crushed in between Hirudegarn's hands.
  • In Bio-Broly, Trunks admits to having a "problem" with dogs.
  • Trunks' hair whilst a Super Saiyan varies multiple times throughout the series, movies, and video games. In Dragon Ball Super his hair as a Super Saiyan resembles Gohan's super saiyan hair.
  • Trunks is the only half/pure-blooded Saiyan who doesn't have jet-black hair that can go Super Saiyan.
  • Trunks is the first child of Bulma to be voiced by Bulma's seiyū Hiromi Tsuru who voices Trunks as a baby, the second being his sister Bulla in both DBZ and GT (as well as video games).
  • In Dragon Ball GT and video games, Trunks knows many techniques originally used by his alternate timeline counterpart (Burning Storm, God Breaker, etc.).
  • Trunks' hobby is playing video games.[5]
  • Trunks' favorite food is yakiniku.[5]
  • Trunks' favorite vehicle is a sports air car.[5]
  • Because Vegeta is the Saiyan prince, this technically makes Trunks a prince as well (he is even referred to as "Prince Trunks" at one point) but this is never mentioned in the Dragon Ball franchise.
  • A major inconsistency throughout the franchise follows Trunks' hair color, often changing in a variety tone of purples, blues, and in his Super Saiyan Third Grade state, red (with his eyes being pink). For years left many fans confused, with some in attribute to the new design in Super, making up theories.
    • This was due to Toriyama's oblivious intents. In an interview stated in Daizenshuu 1, Toriyama quoted "Yeah that's right, I don't do it consciously. When I'm applying the color, "It was more or less this color". However, with people that I've already drawn in color before. I generally don't go back and check, so sometimes I end up using different colors than I did before. (laughs)"[6]
