Appearance

General Description: Galarian Corsola is a regional form of Corsola. Its body is bleached white.

Facial Features: Half-closed pink eyes. A perpetual frown.

Physical Features: Its arms, horn, and branches are wavy and translucent. The branches are incorporeal and can disappear at will, revealing the holes in its shell. It has a light blue underside.

Special Features: Galarian Corsola were wiped out by sudden changes in the climate and ocean temperature, turning them into Ghost-types. It consumes spirit energy from the life force it absorbs. This diet eventually causes its shell to break, its body to become incorporeal, and its spirit energy to pour out, completing its Evolution into Cursola.

Alternate Forms: Galarian Corsola is a regional form of Corsola.

General Description: Cursola is a coral-like Pokémon. Its lower body resembles that of Galarian Corsola, but broken apart to reveal an ectoplasmic "body" that has taken the shape of a ghost.

Physical Features: The ectoplasm surrounds Cursola's core, a white sphere with a face like that of Galarian Corsola. The core has an oval-shaped opening with three inward-facing notches. Two half-circle openings similar to eyes are located above the core. Together, the three openings resemble a screaming face with a sad or pained expression. Two small branches below the core serve as its arms, and one small branch on its forehead serves as a horn. It has three long branches on each side of the head and three more on its lower back. All of its branches can split apart when it attacks.

40 Power Gem Rock Special 80 100 Deals damage with no additional effects.
45 Night Shade Ghost Special — 100 Deals damage equal to the user's level.
50 Grudge Ghost Status — — If the user faints from an opponent's attack, the attacker's move that caused the faint has its PP reduced to 0.
55 Mirror Coat Psychic Special — 100 If the user was hit by a Special attack this turn, deals back double the damage taken. Has -5 priority.

Learned Moves through being caught

The Corsola Line naturally cannot use the following moves on its own as wild Pokémon. However, through being caught by a trainer it opens up to all of these techniques:

Trivia

  • Corsola is the only Generation II Pokémon in the Water 3 Egg Group.
  • Galarian Corsola and its Evolution are the only Ghost-type Pokémon in both the Water 1 and Water 3 Egg Groups.
  • Galarian Corsola is the only Ghost-type Pokémon with an insectoid body.
  • Corsola can be seen as a parallel to Farfetch'd in Sword and Shield. Both of their original region's forms do not evolve, and they have mono-typed regional forms that can evolve once. At the Stow-on-Side Stadium and during the Champion Cup Finals, Allister in Pokémon Shield uses Galarian Corsola's Evolution, Cursola, on his team, while Bea in Pokémon Sword uses Galarian Farfetch'd's Evolution, Sirfetch'd, on hers.
  • In Pokémon GO, Corsola is a region-exclusive Pokémon generally found in tropical and subtropical regions near the equator, between approximately 31° N and 26° S.
  • Galarian Corsola sports a plush keychain adorned with a festive bow tie as part of the Pokémon Center's Undersea Holiday collection.
  • Galarian Corsola's dormant body was sold as a desk weight at Pokémon Centers as merchandise for the 2025 Halloween Ghost Chateau.
  • Corsola appears to be based on a coral skeleton, specifically the skeletons of stony corals, whose mineral composition may have inspired its Rock typing. It may also be based on skeletons of precious coral, which is used as a gemstone.
  • Galarian Corsola appears to be based on the skeleton of bleached coral, a phenomenon in which coral loses its symbiotic algae, causing it to lose its coloration. Coral bleaching is primarily associated with environmental stress, particularly rising sea temperatures resulting from climate change. Its Ghost type may reference the mortality of severely bleached coral, or the fact that coral skeletons are produced by cnidarian polyps, animals closely related to jellyfish that may have inspired its ghostly appearance. The way it immobilizes its prey may be inspired by the cnidocytes and nematocysts used by corals to capture prey. Additionally, its magenta eyes may reference crustose coralline algae, pink or purple calcifying algae that commonly grow on coral skeletons and reef rubble.
  • Corsola's relationship with Mareanie and Toxapex may be a reference to real-life predation of coral polyps by the crown-of-thorns starfish.

Cursola

  • Cursola and its pre-Evolution are the only Ghost-type Pokémon in both the Water 1 and Water 3 Egg Groups.
    • In addition, Cursola is the only Generation VIII Pokémon in the Water 3 Egg Group.
  • Excluding form changes, Cursola has the largest decrease in a single base stat upon evolving, losing 50 Defense.
  • Cursola can be seen as a parallel to Sirfetch'd. They are both mono-typed Evolutions of regional forms whose original forms do not evolve. In Sword and Shield, at the Stow-on-Side Stadium and during the Champion Cup Finals, Allister in Pokémon Shield uses Cursola on his team, while Bea in Pokémon Sword uses Sirfetch'd on hers.
  • Cursola's cry is composed from Corsola's cry, pitched down and with a much more eerie tone added.
  • Cursola appears to be based on the skeletons of coral affected by coral bleaching, a phenomenon in which coral loses its symbiotic algae, causing it to lose its coloration. Coral bleaching is primarily associated with environmental stress, particularly rising sea temperatures resulting from climate change. Its Ghost type may reference the high mortality rate of severely bleached coral, or its ghostly body may represent a living coral polyp freed from its mineral skeleton, as coral polyps are cnidarians closely related to jellyfish, whose soft, translucent bodies resemble ghosts. The way it paralyzes those who touch its ectoplasm may be inspired by the cnidocytes and nematocysts used by corals to capture prey, which can immobilize prey through venom. Additionally, its appearance and ability to petrify, along with its name in various languages, may reference the Gorgons of Greek mythology. This may also be a reference to Alcyonacea, an order of octocorals that includes the so-called "gorgonian corals."
  • Alcyonacea also contain gorgonin, a scleroprotein that forms part of the axial skeleton of many gorgonian corals, possibly tying in to Cursola's skeletal appearance. The ectoplasmic encasing that it periodically sheds may draw inspiration from the mucus houses of larvaceans. Cursola's odd ritual of gathering together under a full moon and sending their branches into the sky may be a reference to real-life coral spawning and its possible relationship to the phase of the Moon.

Codex Statistics Questions

Q: Shouldn't at least late game Pokémon get Faster Than Light due to being able to dodge solar beam?

A: Solar beam is absorbing light and then shooting out a blast, it is not a light speed attack but an energy blast that absorbs light energy. On top of this, Pokémon cannot dodge this move without lowering the opponents accuracy or raising their own speed. Dazzling Gleam is a flash of light that is also 100% accuracy. Flash which is a literal flash of light is 100% accuracy. So it's clear light speed attacks are generally unmissable unless their accuracy drop or a character ups their speed to make it harder to tag them. Further examples of them not being this speed, Dragonite is pretty consistently stated in its pokedex as an impressive speed feat for it to circle the globe in 16 hours, and Garchomp is treated as impressive for being able to keep up with planes and fly at sonic speeds.

Junichi Masuda: We created Platinum with a new method of determining the game's direction that was based on the image of one Pokémon - Giratina. When I imagined Giratina, the idea of a "reversed world" came to my mind. I thought of concepts such as "E=mc2" and matter and antimatter. There is no top or bottom, no left or right. We increased the number of developers for Diamond and Pearl, so we wanted to clarify the game concepts for the team before we started the project Its better to hammer out the overall vision of the game first, and then all the team members will work towards that vision by throwing out ideas. The concept of "ultimate" was what we started out with for this title."
