Sylvester Ashling

From The Codex
I-I told you before! I'm not... a kid. And trust me. If I'm the one dealing with those thieves? They'll be out cold before they have a chance to make the same mistake!
~ Sylvester

Background

Dr. Sylvester "Sylvie" Ashling is a 15-year-old psychologist who investigates interactions between epithets and the human psyche. After overhearing Indus talking about the Arsene Amulet, he stayed in the Sweet Jazz City Museum so that he could find and study it.

His epithet, "Drowsy", lulls his targets to sleep using a cloud of pollen-like dust. From there, Sylvie can bring their dreams to life. Notably, Sylvie can also use his epithet on himself, allowing him to transform into a giant Minotaur-like being called Dr. Beefton.

Powers and Techniques

Pierce Resistance (Standard Pierce Resistance; Bullets in the only deal minor impact damage to all users within the series), Consumption (Physical Consumption; Can eat screws and drink from pinecones to regain stamina and health), Situational Regeneration (High-Low; Characters regenerate after winning a battle. Giovannia could regenerate back his broken bones. Possibly Mid-Godly; Molly Blyndeff has an ability named "Hushabye" which dumbs down the opponent to nothing. She later got attacked by bears and when asked if she could erase the bears, she states that they would just come back after the fight. Since everyone instantly regenerates right after a fight in verse, the characters themselves should be able to come back from existence erasure), Supernatural Resilience (Mera's bones breaking were viewed as -1 damage this doesn't only apply to Mera as she broke Sylvie's ribs. It is stated by word of god that everyone in Epithet Erased functions under JRPG mechanics so even attacks that are greatly above them and should kill them can't, for example being shot in the head will not kill them, they are even described as "extremely hard to kill"[3]), Restoration (After battles characters injuries, statuses, etcetera are normally undone, including acts such as de-aging a character, being reverted), Pain Tolerance (Characters in Epithet Erased are extremely hard to kill and can survive shots to the head along with taking attacks that break their bones without showing much harm from it), Limited Observation (Unconscious Manifestation; The reason epithets exist in the Epithet Erased universe is due to everyone speaking the same language, allowing the words of that language to manifest physically because everyone understands them[4][5]).

Resistance to Age Manipulation (After a battle is over, affects such as Zora Salazar's ability to de-age a character, were reverted)

Genius Intelligence, Sleep Manipulation (His dust can put people to sleep), Summoning & Animal Manipulation (Sylvie summons a horde of Counting Sheep that can nibble enemies and put them to sleep by jumping into them. He can also use his sheep to form a fluffy shield to protect himself), Dream Manipulation & Subjective Reality (When his opponents are groggy enough, he can bring their subconscious fears and nightmares to life. Sylvie can put himself to sleep, bringing his own dreams to life, summoning Dr. Beefton around his sleeping body to protect and fight for him. Beefton is his own entity and Sylvie does not have full control in this state).

Equipment

Nothing notable.

Notable Techniques

  • Drowsy: His epithet, "Drowsy", lulls his targets to sleep using a cloud of pollen-like dust. From there, Sylvie can bring their dreams to life. Notably, Sylvie can also use his epithet on himself, allowing him to transform into a giant Minotaur-like being called Dr. Beefton.
    • Weird Dandruff: Golden dust fills the sky, putting anyone to sleep who breathe it in. But like normal dust, it can be blown away.
    • Counting Sheep: Sylvie summons a horde of Counting Sheep that can nibble enemies and put them to sleep by jumping onto them. He can also use his sheep to form a fluffy shield to protect himself.
    • Nightmare Fuel: When his opponents are groggy enough, he can bring their subconscious fears and nightmares to life. However, Nightmare Fuel doesn't do anything if the opponent has no fears, or if their fears already exist in reality.
    • Dream Big: Sylvie can put himself to sleep, bringing his own dreams to life, summoning Dr. Beefton around his sleeping body to protect and fight for him. Beefton is his own entity and Sylvie does not have full control in this state. Dream Big is reverted whenever Sylvie is woken up.

Other

Standard Tactics: Sylvie will use his epithet along with attacks such as nightmare fuel and dream big to turn into Beefton if the opponent pressures him. | Beefton will charge and attack the opponent.

Weaknesses: If the person is aware of what his sleep dust can do, like regular dust it can be blown away, Nightmare Fuel doesn't do anything if the opponent has no fears, and have less affect on those who fears are their everyday reality. Dream Big can be stopped if Sylvie wakes up. | Has none of Sylvie's powers in this state. Will be reverted if Sylvie wakes up.

  3. Just a question about the scene in Episode 4 where Mera is defeated. I get that it's a cartoon and all and that the impact is exaggerated for effect, but we've been told all this stuff about how fragile Mera is, and then she gets hit so hard that she flies through the air and smacks into a wall hard enough to make an indent. It seems a bit odd, even with the "broken bones" line. Some people suggest Molly dumbed down her epithet so she wasn't as fragile when Giovanni hit her, was this the case?

No it’s just a big final attack, nothing fancy about it.
Everything operates by like… JRPG video games rules in Epithet. You can get shot in the head and it just deals some damage. It’s super hard to *kill* somebody.
  4. The characters don’t know this, but epithets exist in the Epithet Erased universe because everyone in this world speaks the exact same language. The in-universe rule is that once every member of a species speaks the same language, the words of that language begin to manifest physically because everybody understands them. This means that any word with a widely-understood meaning can become an epithet.
  5. A word needs to enter the collective public’s understanding before it can be an epithet. This means a word that only you and your friends use cannot be an epithet, but a slang term common across a major metropolitan area could be.
